2014 -2015 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
We are pleased to present the 2015 Common Ground Annual Report.
At Common Ground we like to say that there is no wrong door. Regardless of the door
that a person in crisis enters through, Common Ground will find a way to empower
that person and help them move from crisis to hope. 2015 was another year in which
we did just that. Once again, more people used our services to help reach their goals.
2015 also marks the culmination of my 25 years at Common Ground. It has been an
extraordinary experience and one for which I am truly grateful. In January 2015, the
Board of Directors approved Heather Rae as CEO, effective October 1, 2015.
Helping people move from crisis to hope
Common Ground is a not for profit agency dedicated to helping people move from
crisis to hope. For more than 40 years, the agency has provided the tools – our
24-hour Resource and Crisis Helpline, youth and family services, emergency
psychiatric services, and other programs throughout Oakland and Genesee Counties
– that empower individuals to fulfill their own lives and futures in their own way.
Our programs and services are a lifeline for runaway and homeless youths, families in
crisis, victims of crime, people with mental illness, and others in critical situations.
With an annual operating budget of more than $13 million, Common Ground serves
over 80,000 individuals each year. The agency is supported by state and federal
grants, contracts, individual and corporate contributions, foundation grants, special
events, the Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority, Genesee Health
System, and United Way for Southeastern Michigan. Most of our services are free of
charge and 93% of funds we receive go to direct service.
Tony Rothschild
Chief Executive Officer
Heather has been with Common Ground for almost five years, beginning as
Vice-President of Programs and Services. She brought to the position an extensive
background in the social services and administration, most recently with Community
Mental Health, where she worked for 14 years. When she came to Common Ground,
Heather took a fresh look at our services from the point of view of the person seeking
help. She shortened wait times, improved the comfort level, and helped the staff
concentrate on treating the whole person.
Also, effective October 1, 2015, there is a new Board of Directors, chaired by Kay White,
which has immediately begun to develop new programs and promote new business for
Common Ground.
Heather Rae
Chief Executive Officer
(effective Oct. 1, 2015)
Under the enthusiastic and capable guidance of Heather and the Board, I know that
Common Ground will build on its mission and extend the agency’s reach to the
community and people who need our help. These are the services that you support
with your generous donations and volunteer hours. We appreciate your devotion to
our passion.
Finally, as I open a new door to an exciting future, I am pleased to share with you another
accomplishment of 2015. Common Ground won the Crain’s award for “Best Managed
Non-Profit”, confirming that we are providing services that better our people and our
community in a cost efficient, economical, and proficient manner.
Kay White
Chair Elect
Thank you for being a part of our community. We hope that you will continue to join
with us in opening new doors to Common Ground.

Resource and Crisis Helpline Volunteer
Common Ground Builds Communities of Support
Once a month, Eric Hawkins, Chief of
the Southfield Police Department,
mans the phones at the Crisis
Telephone Line (CTL) at Common
Ground. Although it may seem
remarkable that a man who is as busy
as he is finds time to volunteer at the
CTL, Chief Hawkins says he finds it
‘extremely beneficial for three reasons’.
Last year, we helped 10,454 victims of crime, survivors of suicide, and survivors of homicide, youths and parents by
providing counseling and support groups that aid in the healing process. In addition, more than 500 members of the
community were educated about our programs and services, mental health related issues, suicide prevention, and more
through our public education efforts.
• Becoming a Love & Logic Parent*
Combines discussion, video, support, and guest speakers
for parents of teens and pre-teens to assist them in raising
independent, emotionally intelligent children and building
stronger families. It is a six-week program and is held
three times a year.
• Survivors of Suicide Support Group
Provides support for people who have lost a loved one
due to suicide. It is bimonthly for a 12-week period. An
eight-week, closed support group is also offered three
times per year.
• Public Education
• Counseling Program
Offers outpatient counseling for individuals and families
with 10-17 year olds for up to three months, with the goal
of helping families draw on their own resources and
abilities to get through a crisis.
• Domestic Abuse Support Group
Provides a 10-week support group for survivors of
intimate partner violence. The group is held 2-3 times per
year and runs for 10 sessions. After the second session the
group is closed to allow participants to bond.
• Growth and Healing Support Group
Provides support for young women ages 14-17 who have
been victims of sexual assault and/or abuse.
• Parent Support Partners*
Peer support services to parents and caregivers who are
supporting a child with special needs. By drawing on their
own experiences as parents, PSP’s provide crisis intervention, support groups, linkages to community resources,
and empower parents to develop a sustainable, natural
support network.
• Survivors of Homicide Support Group
Provides support for people who have lost a loved one
due to homicide or drunk driving. It meets bimonthly.

Provides community education via Common Ground’s
SaYes Theatre Troupe, Crisis to Hope presentations,
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainings and the
agency’s presence at numerous health and resource fairs.
The SaYes Theatre Troupe is a prevention-based theater
program comprised of trained Peer Mentors, ages 15-25.
The group presents live performances on issues facing
children, teens, young adults and families. Topics include
peer pressure, bullying, teasing, substance abuse, dating
violence, conflict resolution, stress, and others. Crisis to
Hope presentations consist of inspirational stories that get
to the heart of Common Ground’s three key impact areas.
The stories are delivered through personal experiences of
the agency’s CEO, Board of Trustees, program managers,
and people who have received our services. Participants
come away with a better understanding of how critical
Common Ground is to our community. Mental Health
First Aid training is an internationally recognized training
program designed to equip lay people (non-mental health
professionals) with tools to recognize and respond to
people who may be in a mental health crisis and connect
them to appropriate care. Participants learn how to
provide initial help to someone showing symptoms of
mental illness or in a mental health crisis (severe depression,
psychosis, panic attack, suicidal thoughts and behaviors)
until appropriate professional help can be engaged.
Common GroundTM Helping people move from crisis to hope.
Chief Eric Hawkins
• It gives me time to be in touch with
people with real concerns, not just
hypothetical incidents that the
officers address in training.
• It helps me maintain those skills that
are required of a police officer when
meeting people in crisis.
• I use the experience to help teach our
road patrol officers how to deal with
certain people and situations in the
community. They are better able to
recognize when a person with a
mental illness is involved and what
options are available to help that
person.
Common Ground came to Chief
Hawkins attention in the early 1990s,
when he was a young police officer in
Southfield. He and his fellow officers
would take people to Common
Ground when it was apparent they
needed treatment for behavioral issues,
not incarceration. Common Ground
would assess the individual and
2014-2015 Annual Report
provide a place of respite until appropriate help could be identified and
implemented.
He reconnected with Common
Ground after he became supervisor of
the Hostage Negotiation Team. The
team was made up of about ten
officers. Training involved, among
other programs, role playing, where
team members, led by Certified
Hostage Negotiators, acted out serious
incidents. After a time, to bring new
life into the role playing, they enlisted
the help of local high school theater
groups. This too became less effective
and the team took a training program
with the Los Angeles Police Department. They learned that officers in the
LAPD volunteered on a crisis line to
maintain the skills necessary to defuse
high stress situations and help people
cope. The Southfield team returned
home and contacted Lisa Turbeville
who is head of the CTL. The team
members took the 90-hour training
program and now each of them
volunteers once a month on the CTL.
Chief Hawkins continues to volunteer
on the CTL with the current members
of the Hostage Negotiation Team. In
September 2015, Chief Hawkins was
elected to the Board of Trustees of
Common Ground.

Bill Quinby
“It occurred to me that if all these
people are invested in my wellbeing,
then I need to be too.” These were the
thoughts of Bill Quinby as he came to
appreciate how much the people of
Common Ground were committed to
his recovery.
In 2009, when Bill became ill, he was
unable to continue his job as a chef.
The loss of his job was followed by the
loss of his home and he had soon used
up his savings. Depression led to a
suicide attempt. After three weeks in
the hospital, with a diagnosis of Severe
Depression with a Suicidal Ideology, he
was referred to Common Ground.
Bill spent two weeks at the Crisis
Residential Unit (CPU) in Royal Oak.
During his stay, he was placed on

medication and a therapist was
provided through the Wellness
Network. He also received help in
applying for disability benefits. After
five months in a boarding house
facility for the mentally ill, he moved
to his present home which was
arranged by the Community Housing
Network. Although he was feeling
better, he was afraid to go out and kept
to his apartment. That was when his
neighbor Edith stepped in. She had
learned that a TimeBank, being
formed in Pontiac, was looking for
people to join the Steering Committee
to set up the program. In March, 2013,
Bill and Edith joined the Steering
Committee and a year later, the
Pontiac SUN (Strong United
Neighbors) TimeBank, a Common
Ground program, was formed. It is
funded by the United Way of
Southeastern Michigan through

organizations that support it include

wanted to get better, he had to help

Administrators of the organization.
Edith works with seniors and Bill runs
orientation classes for people who
want to become members of the
TimeBank. As a member, Bill provides
other services such as helping people
declutter their homes and painting.
Because he does not have a car, Bill
uses his credits by calling upon other
members of the TimeBank to provide
him transportation when he needs it.
He also helps each October, when the

other local networks including the

includes a Silent and Live Auction and
Bill, who still works as a chef at a local
