A Card for Every Kid
This September, in conjunction
with National Library Card SignUp Month, we’re teaming up with
local library systems to put a library
card in the hands of every student
in Cuyahoga County through an
initiative we’re calling "A Card for
Every Kid." All month we’ll offer
students with library fines onetime fine forgiveness and actively
encourage students who do not
already own a library card to sign up
for our new Opportunity Card, which
does not require parental permission
and allows the user to borrow up to
three items.
a
Message from Our Executive Director
Greetings,
The "A Card for Every Kid" initiative
was developed in response to the
Obama administration’s national
ConnectED Library Challenge and
calls upon public libraries to work
with their mayors, school leaders
and school librarians to ensure
every student has access to learning
resources and books.
If there’s one thing that I consistently find in short supply, it’s time. Time for phone
calls, time to respond to emails, time with family and friends and, of course, time to
read. More and more, I find myself squeezing in my reading during stolen moments
between appointments, on the treadmill, standing in line at the grocery store or
when I have an uninterrupted couple of hours on a flight.
Like many of you, convenience is a priority for my lifestyle, which is why I’m thrilled
to announce the launch of Cuyahoga County Public Library’s new app. Available
now in the App Store and Google Play, our app makes it simple to request a book,
download a magazine, stream your favorite album or register for a library program.
The new app remembers your account information so you can easily check holds,
renew materials or pay a fine on the items you haven’t had time to return to your
local branch!
Cuyahoga County Public Library strives to be the most convenient public library
in the nation – and our new app makes it possible to access the eBooks, TV
shows, music, comics and movies that you love anytime, anywhere. What’s more
convenient than your entire public library available in your purse or back pocket?
Visit cuyahogalibrary.org/mobile to download our new app today.

This year, we opened three Innovation Centers at our Garfield Heights, Mayfield
and Parma-Snow branches with support from Cuyahoga County Executive
Armond Budish and the Cleveland Foundation. These centers provide budding
entrepreneurs with the support and tools they need to turn promising ideas into
successful businesses. Services include free access to 3-D printing, laser engraving,
vinyl cutting, a professional-grade embroidery machine and Mac and PC
computer stations equipped with Adobe Creative Suite design software. The
Innovation Centers are free and open to everyone, but before you can use them you
must complete an orientation session that will acquaint you with our procedures,
equipment and software.
The Innovation Centers are helping users like Tiffanie B. (pictured to the left) increase
their productivity and grow their small businesses. Tiffanie is the owner of the family
embroidery business Aylijyah’s Gems on Scottsmarketplace.com.
“It might take me 26 minutes to finish an item at home,” she said. “At the Innovation
Center I can make four of that same item in the same amount of time. It’s a big help.”
Please visit cuyahogalibrary.org/innovation to see orientation session times/dates
and other details.

They may not look like it, but storytimes are actually carefully planned lessons
designed to educate as much as entertain – and they are way more dynamic
than you may remember. Many include music and dancing, singing and
rhyming, counting and identifying shapes and colors. They also teach important
skills for the classroom, like taking turns, sitting still in a group setting and
listening to a book that someone else has chosen. Most importantly, storytimes
demonstrate to children that reading is an enjoyable, worthwhile activity.
