IN MEMORIAM
Living or dead, an Elk is never forgotten,
never forsaken. Morning and noon may
pass him by, the light of day sink heedlessly in the west, but ere the shadows of
midnight shall fall, the chimes of memory
will be pealing forth the friendly message,
“To Our Absent Members.”
To All Madison Elks Members:
Please call the Elks Office (2551644) or Bev Schwartz (241-0298)
when one of our Elk members goes
into the hospital, nursing home, or is
at home recuperating from an illness.
We can then send a get well card and
let them know they are remembered.

Exalted Ruler’s Message
Welcome to July! I hope you’re planning to attend the cook-out on July 4 and take
advantage of our outstanding lakefront view of the Monona fireworks.
I’d like to thank everybody who donated to or worked towards the acquisition of the new
round tables. When the lower level is set up for weddings or other functions, it really
looks great.
I would like to spend a little time talking about committees within the Lodge. We have several
committees that are very important that are understaffed. Last month I recommended to all committee
chairs that meetings would begin after 6:00 pm to allow members to participate after work. So please
call the Elks office between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and volunteer
for a committee. I realize that not everyone has the time to spend away from our jobs and families.
However, the good work of the Elks requires the efforts of as many members as we can get.
Our Lodge committees are: Americanism, Auditing & Accounting, Building & Grounds, Community
Activities, Drug Awareness, Elks National Foundation, Entertainment, House Committee,
Indoctrination, Investigation, Lapsation, Lodge Activities (Breakfast with Santa, Spaghetti Dinner,
Golf), Madison Elks Charities, Membership, Memorial Service, Newsletter, Patriotic Activities (Flag
Day, Memorial Day), Public Relations, State Major Project, Veterans Service, Youth Activities
Programs (Dictionary Project, U.S. Constitution, Scholarship, Boy Scouts, Hoop Shoot).
Now, as just about every month, I remind you to sponsor new members. We have a great facility and
it keeps getting better, thanks to all of you. I also encourage all of you to make note of upcoming
activities at the Lodge and attend as many as you are able.

Meet Chef Phil!
July Dining Specials
Hello! My name is Phil Loder. I was born
and raised in Madison. At the age of 12, I
started working at Smokey’s Supper Club
on University Avenue (the original
Smokey’s for the minimum wage of $1 per
hour, which was quite a bit of money for a
12-year-old those days!
Tuesday
At 15 I worked at the Pancake House in
Hilldale, where I learned how to cook short
order and dinner cuisine.
At age 17, I enlisted in the Air Force and
trained as an aircraft maintenance mechanic. After training, I was stationed in the
upper peninsula with Strategic Air Command. Did a tour in Southeast Asia assigned to a rescue unit in Northern Thailand.
Came home and attended the U.W. and
MATC on the GI Bill. Was an over-theroad truck driver for a few years.
I realized that I really missed being in the
food and beverage business and wanted to
open and own a bar and restaurant. I
moved to Milwaukee and opened a small
bar and grill. Wanting to travel and see
new things, I moved to Kansas City and
started working in the hotel industry where
I received chef training from a Master Chef
who wrote my chef certification papers.
For the last 25-30 years, I have had positions as Executive Chef, Food and Beverage Director, Restaurant Owner, Cafeteria
Director, Bar Manager, and Restaurant
Manager.
And for the last few years, I have enjoyed
serving as your Head Chef and Kitchen
Manager!

Craft Beer Night at The Lodge
Thursday, July 25, 2013 6:00 – 7:30 pm
Are you curious about expanding your tastes beyond macro brewery light beers and
lagers?
Have you ever wanted to try a different type of craft brewed beer, but didn’t want to
buy a whole 6 pack?
Then come join us at the Lodge and learn how different styles of craft beer taste,
how the beer is made, and what types of food they pair well with.
For a nominal $10 fee, we plan on tasting and discussing 5 different styles of craft
beers along with some munchies. This is a great opportunity to meet different Lodge
members, enjoy good beer, and have some fun!
Please call for reservations:

Does this sound like something you would like to do? Please contact Entertainment Chair, Dianne
Redsten (221-3225) if you think we should pursue this idea. The temporary plan would be to do
this in October. It would be very little practice time but a lot of fun. Families with children from
age 1-100 can participate. Contact your family and friends and let Dianne know soon if we should
go ahead with this plan. This idea has been mentioned to the Entertainment Committee by several
members, but we want to be sure we will have the support of our members before we go forward.
Thanks for your input!!!

MADISON ELKS 410 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Members of Madison Elks Lodge 410 participated in the Monona Memorial Day Parade on
Monday, May 27. PER Kristi Barbian made sure the paperwork was submitted on time, but after
last year, she was not allowed to walk the parade route this year. (For those who don’t know, she
ended up in the ER after the parade last Memorial Day!)
ER Steve Sasso hooked the Wisconsin Elks Drug Awareness trailer to his
pretty red pick-up truck and drove it to our assigned spot in Monona.
Veterans Walt Christensen, Richard Olson, and Gerry Fregien, and members
Mary Bach and Paula McIntosh met us there. The Veterans rode in the truck
with Steve and threw candy out the windows at the kids lining the parade
route. Mary, Paula, and Secretary Sherie Sasso walked alongside the truck
(and sometimes ran alongside!) handing out a trinket we had ordered from a novelty company—a
red plastic combination light/whistle/compass/key chain with “Madison Elks Lodge #410” and
“Say No to Drugs” printed on the side. The kids LOVED them! We could hear them behind us
exclaiming “Cool! Look at this!!”
We bought the trinkets with a Promise Grant from the Elks National
Foundation. The grant was $2,000, and we were able to purchase
2,500 of the light/whistle combinations with that money. We will
report to ENF on what we did with the money and apply for another
grant for the next year.
Two weeks later, we took the Drug Awareness Trailer to the Capitol Square for the Madison
Police & Fire Departments’ Safety Saturday. ER Steve Sasso, Chaplain Dale Kripps and his wife,
Nancy, and member Gerry Fregien set up a mini hoop shoot for the kids. They handed out more of
the trinkets and also water bottles provided by the Wisconsin Elks Drug Awareness Committee.
The event ran from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, and there were some tired helpers at the end of the day!
Thanks to all who helped, and thanks to all who donate to the Elks charitable entities on the local,
State, and National levels so that we can participate in these important community activities.
