4th Sunday of Easter 17th April 2016 Behind today’s gospel lies the image of the first century Palestinian shepherd. At the time of Jesus in Palestine, sheep were kept mainly for wool and milk, not to be slaughtered for food as we do. The shepherd therefore knew his flock well, giving each a name. This they recognised and followed him alone. Throughout the Catholic world, today is designated Vocation Sunday. ‘Vocation’, as you’re often reminded, comes from the Latin word vocare, meaning ‘to call’. We are called, but for various reasons we may choose not to listen, to be selectively deaf. Clergy: Fr. Frank Lourigan PP Fr. Baiyi (By-yee) Gong Residing at O.L.D. Presbytery Ph 3355 1349 Rev. After the doctor had examined the man thoroughly he asked if he could speak with the wife in private. ‘Your husband’s heart,’ the doctor explained, ‘is in a very bad condition. Here’s what you must do: Firstly, remove all stress from his life. He can continue working, but when he gets home, keep the kids quiet and have them ready for bed. Make sure you’re always looking attractive and ready for romance should he be in the mood. Let him relax with a drink in front of the television and watch whatever program he wishes. Always cook his favourite meals, and keep the house spotlessly clean. Make sure his clothes are washed and ironed immaculately. Don’t ever argue with him, and never nag: always do what he wants without question. Unless you fulfil my instructions to the letter, your husband will be dead within the month. The wife was badly shaken by the prognosis and rejoined her husband. ‘What did the doctor have to say?’ asked the husband. ‘The doctor said that you’ll be dead within a month!’ We are called, but who or what are we called to be? When Rabbi Zusya grew old and knew that his time on earth was nearing a close, his students gathered around him. One of them asked him if he was afraid of dying. ‘I am afraid of what God will ask me,’ the Rabbi said. ‘What will he ask you?’ ‘He will not ask me, ‘Zusya, why were you not like Moses?’ He will ask me, ‘Zusya, why were you not Zusya?’ Cardinal Newman once wrote: ‘God has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another.’ Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, echoing the sentiments of Rabbi Zusya, once said, ‘At the Day of Judgement, as we are often reminded, the question will not be about why we have failed to be someone else; I shall not be asked why I wasn’t Martin Luther King or Mother Teresa, but why I wasn’t Rowan Williams.’ I have called you, the Shepherd says; listen to my voice and trust in the gifts I have given you to be faithful to that call. Page 2 Each month, Catholics worldwide are invited to join Pope Francis in a particular prayer intention (visit ‘thepopevideo.org’). Throughout April, the Pope's prayer is for small farmers: "That small farmers may receive just compensation for their invaluable work." Contemporary farming life in Australia conjures images of vast sheep or wheat stations with huge machinery in operation more so than small plot farming. Yet regardless of the mode or scale of production, farmers need our support and prayers, and deserve recognition and fair compensation for their work. Farming families in Queensland and elsewhere in Australia are struggling with the daily reality of climate change: the impact of extreme weather events, including prolonged droughts and destructive floods. Farming families seek to scratch out a living in difficult conditions while farming the land sustainably for future generations. Meanwhile, we might question whether what we pay for produce in the shops really reflects the true cost of production and allows for future investment in sustainable agriculture... Responding to a genuine need in Queensland, the 'Downs & West Community Support' charity, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity, was founded in 2007 to provide pastoral and practical support to farming and rural families struggling on the land. To find out more about this grassroots charity and how you might help, please visit their website: www.downsandwestcommunitysupport.o rg/welcome/ Farmers in Australia and across the world produce food for the mouths of many, so we can heartily concur with Pope Francis who says of farmers: "...You deserve a decent life". Saturday Next 23rd April 9.30am St. Williams In recent times we have had increased call to baptise ‘older’ children eg. over 5. They differ from infants as there is need for a short program (6 sessions) of catechesis. Unlike infant children where the faith of the parents is the initiating requirement, these maturing minds and hearts call forth their own engagement as well as the cultural faith of the family. Thanks to Sue Allen and Marie-Louise Singson for their organising these baptisms of 10 youngsters Mitchelton & Grovely - Samford Baptism: We joyfully announce the baptism of Maja, Lina & Lukas Johansson and welcome them into our faith community. Parish Council: Meeting Monday night at 6.15pm. Address by Fr. John Chalmers on the topic, “Living Mercy, Today and Tomorrow”. This will occur in the St. Mary MacKillop Centre on Thursday, May 12 at 7.30 pm at Grovely. This will be a large gathering, as the speaker is so well known and respected for his wisdom and clarity, and the topic is so much in the forefront of our minds for this “Year of Mercy”. How can we practice mercy in our daily lives so as to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others who desperately need such mercy? Pope Francis’s document, arising out of the recent family Synods, titled “Amoris Laetitia” – “The Joy of Love” – is quite lengthy. You can access the main themes by going to the Grovely AFE website www.stwilliams-afe.com . On this site, among other articles about the document, including the full text, you will find a document by Fr. James Martin (a Jesuit priest) titled “The Top 10 Take-aways from Amoris Laetitia”. This will give you a concise summary of the main themes. You will find so many refreshing statements made by Pope Francis in “Amoris Laetitia” – the document is like a breath of fresh air flowing through our Church of the 21st century. One is reminded of just how exhilarating it was when the winds of change of Vatican 2 were blowing through the windows of the Church, opened by Pope John XX111 in the1960s. The winds are starting to blow strongly again. Liturgy Team: Meeting Monday 4.30pm. Friday night Youth nights are back! The world Day of Prayer for vocations coincides with Good Shepherd Sunday on 17th April . It’s a day when we as a Church community remember the Lord’s instruction to “Pray the Lord of the harvest to send labourers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). We especially pray for our youth and young people as they consider the call to Ordained, Marries, Single or Religious life.
