May 18, 2014 - Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Parish
The Community of The Blessed Sacrament 11300 N. 64th Street • Scottsdale, AZ 85254 • 480-948-8370 • www.blessedsacramentscotts.org May 18, 2014 You Are Invited to a Special Teaching Mass! On Wednesday evening, May 21, at 7pm, Fr. Pat & Dcn. Bob will celebrate a special Teaching Mass during which they will explain: ● ● ● ● ● What is happening in every part of the Mass and why, When we should begin preparing for Mass, What we each should bring to this sacred celebration, What we receive, and What we are to do with what we receive when we are sent forth. Even if you know all the answers, you will still learn more. Do Not Miss This Very Special Mass! Pastor’s Corner Once on a beach about forty miles from Dublin a man took a crate from the trunk of his car. In the crate were homing pigeons. He opened the crate and released the pigeons. They flew straight up into the air. But instead of heading directly for Dublin which was their home, they proceeded to fly in circles. Around and around they went. What the pigeons were doing was finding their bearings. Once they had found their bearing they would set off for home. This homing instinct, which many birds possess, is an almost miraculous thing. With some it seems to be an in-built thing. But others, such as pigeons, have to be trained. The basic requirement of training is to keep them in good health so that they are capable of sustaining flight. Fog, snow, rain, and adverse winds are some of the obstacles they have to overcome. We too have a homing instinct. God, who made us for himself, has not left us rudderless. He has put a homing instinct in us. This is a very subtle and fragile thing, since God will never take away our freedom. It takes the form of an inner restlessness and discontent. This restlessness, this discontent, this longing, far from being a curse, is a blessing. Just as the homing instinct doesn’t save the birds from the necessity of having to struggle against the wind and the rain, so faith doesn’t shield us from the hard knocks of life and death. But what it does give us are bearings. It enables us to live in a topsy-turvy world without getting lost or giving up in despair. It assures us that we have a home to go to and points us in that direction. During the Last Supper when Jesus told the apostles that he was leaving them, they were deeply distressed. But he consoled them with these words, which are among the loveliest words in the Gospel: “There are many dwelling places in my Father’s House. I am going to prepare a place for you and then I will come back and take you with me so that where I am you also may be.” These words mean that we have an eternal home to go to where all our hopes will be fulfilled. But there remains the question of how to get there. If you are in a strange city and ask directions, a person may say, “Go straight down until you come to a stop light. Turn right at the light …” Sometimes the directions are so complicated that you can’t remember them. But you may be fortunate enough to meet an exceptional person who says, “Look, it’s a bit difficult to explain. Follow me and I’ll show you the way.” The way to God has confused and baffled many. Some have gone hopelessly confused; others have become lost. When Thomas asked Jesus, “Show us the Father,” Jesus didn’t give him a lot of complicated directions. Instead he said, “I am the Way.” What he was saying in effect was, “Follow me and I will show you the way.” Meanwhile in the Church we have a spiritual home, built on the foundation stone of Christ. Here we have brothers and sisters who accompany us on our journey to that other home, our heavenly one. Don’t you think God will recognize us when we return home to him at the end of life’s journey? We are God’s children. How can a parent forget their child! Some News! We are going to be assigned an additional priest for our parish. His name is Fr. John Shetler, presently serving the community of Holy Cross in Mesa. Fr. John will be going on sabbatical when he completes his present assignment and then will be joining us on Jan. 1st. I know you will join me in welcoming Fr. John to Blessed Sacrament when the time comes!! ****** What was the vehicle of choice among the apostles? (Here it comes …) A Honda …because they were all in one Accord! (I heard that!!) Have a great week, everyone. Say one for the parish staff when you think of it. God Bless! Fr. Pat Reflection Corner "I am the way, the truth, and the life," Jesus tells His disciples in today's Gospel reading from John. "No one comes to the Father except through me." Our path has been made clear for us, and although we can see the reward at the end, we still must look down at each step along that path in order to keep our footing. We can reach that reward, but only if we allow Jesus to guide us every step of the way. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that the Word of God is a light for our path. We must assimilate it in faith and prayer and put it into practice. This is how moral conscience is formed (CCC 1802). On this fifth Sunday of Easter, we should remember that Christ cleared the most difficult path for us through His Passion and resurrection and now offers to take our hand along the way Scripture Readings Sun 5/18 Mon 5/19 Tue 5/20 Wed 5/21 Acts 6:1-7/1 Pt 2:4-9/Jn 14:1-12 Acts 14:5-18/Jn 14:21-26 Acts 14:19-28/Jn 14:27-31a Acts 15:1-6/Jn 15:1-8 www.blessedsacramentscotts.org Thu 5/22 Fri 5/23 Sat. 5/24 Sun 5/25 Acts 15:7-21/Jn 15:9-11 Acts 15:22-31/Jn 15:12-17 Acts 16:1-10/Jn 15:18-21 Acts 8:5-8, 14-17/1 Pt 3:15-18 May 18, 2014 │ 3 We’re A Parish with a Giving Lifestyle!
