PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Winter has come to all of the country now. I hope everyone survived the recent artic freeze, snow and ice storms that have
blanketed the US.
In closing I want to remind everyone to pay your AWC Dues.
Remember dues must be paid by January 1st in order to vote in
the upcoming Board elections. Plus Gail wants to get things done
and not have to drag this out until March!
I wish you all joy and peace at this wonderful time of the year,
Harold “Red” Tatro
AWC President
The new website for the AWC has been launched and has been
very active. I hope you will all join me in THANKING Karen Lee
for the wonderful job she has done with this monumental task. I
can tell you it was far more involved than anyone ever expected
when this project began at the end of 2011 with the previous
Board. We hope you will visit the site and let us know what you
think. There are still some items to add like the archives but

Finally we have also approved a committee to take on the task
of preparing a Standing Rules and Policies manual for the AWC.
This task has been started several times by past Presidents but

ANNOUNCING OUR REVAMPED,
FABULOUS AWC WEBSITE!
www.americanwhippetclub.net
The long-awaited website remodeled version of our website, www.americanwhippetclub.net is now LIVE! We
know that it may take a few weeks to feel as much at
home on the new site as you have felt on the old, but we
hope that you will be proud of the contemporary look and
feel of the club's new "face" to the dog community and the
breed.
Before we tell you how to log in to the new site, a few
thanks and appreciations are due for the hard work over
the past few years done by several of our AWC Members
to keep the AWC website up and running smoothly. First,
Scot Northern has done a wonderful job of being responsive to all our members and keeping the members-only
section of our old website running smoothly. With assistance from Cindy Scott, he has kept our members apprised of the online version of the AWC newsletter. His
friend and associate, Tim Miller has webhosted our members-only site at no charge to the AWC. These people
deserve the gratitude and appreciation of all members and
subscribers for the countless unpaid hours they have devoted to these tasks.
You will note a number of changes that we hope you will
come to appreciate.
*YOU are now in charge of your own account. You do not
have to wait for a webmaster or board member to upgrade
you from subscriber to member, or to make your membership current. You can easily choose your own password,
and we encourage you to log in immediately and do
so. When you pay your dues in the future using the website payment feature, you will be automatically re-

*The public portion of the website has been greatly expanded and redone with bags and bags of great info for anyone
looking to learn more about the breed. Also, we have
dressed the site with wonderful donated photos of Whippets doing things that Whippets do best--being great companions, looking like living works of art, sleeping, playing,
and enjoying all the competitive activities open to our versatile breed. We hope this will serve to further educate
those people who contact our breeders, or are looking for
more things to do with their Whippets.
*The National Specialty pages are duplicated versions of
the www.awc2014.com website. While we will have duplicate sites this year, having the National Architecture stay
part of the public portion of the AWC website in the future
will eliminate additional web hosting fees, the need to get
someone to completely redesign the National website every year, and also the embarrassment of having had some
of our past National website url's taken over by porn sites
or other entities (yes, this has actually happened!). This
makes the AWC Home Page "one stop shopping" for all
things AWC.
Once you have logged in, you will see a blue button atop
the home page (and all other pages) in the upper right
hand corner of your screen that says "My Account". Click
on this button, and it will take you to a page where your
restricted club documents (primarily the digital versions of
the AWC Newsletter) will appear. It will also show the status of your membership subscription and what options you
have selected for how you read the newsletter (online only
or mailed-foreign/domestic). Check to make sure that your
account details are correct and current. Members will also
be able to access a current AWC Membership list via a link
on the "My Account" page.
For those of you reading this who are mail subscribers to
the WN, please contact Guin Borstel at
[email protected] if you want to be able to access the
newsletters on the website. For the few members out there
who have never provided an email address to the AWC, if
you wish to access the Members-Only section of the website, please contact Karen and she will set up an account
for you.
If you have any questions, you may e-mail Karen Lee
([email protected]). If you have additions and/or

roles. Versatility is in the DNA of our breed, and with
standout performances in many venues, 2013 shows that
nothing has changed. The Whippet has also been a breed
which performs its best when it has a close relationship
with its master or mistress; no surprise a number of exceptional teams rose to the highest levels of their respective
pursuits.
In the show ring, Whippets are noted for being a breed
where an owner-handler, and particularly a breeder-owner
-handled dog, can win the biggest events. While we have
a number of professional handlers among our ranks who
are also breeders, we also have talented amateurs who
can show their own dogs to the biggest wins of the year.
Two Whippets and their breeder/owner/handlers stand out
from the rest. First of all, THE prestige event in all of US
Whippetdom is our National Specialty. This year, the National was won by Californian Brad Briscoe and his homebred GCh Lakota’s Which Witch Are You. Brad is also the
first African-American to handle a Whippet to a Whippet
National SBIS.
While Brad Briscoe is relatively new to Whippets, being
less than ten years involved in the show ring with the
breed, our second newsmaker has, by her own reckoning,
over fifty years as a breeder/owner/handler of top show
Whippets. Kerrie Kuper of the famous Karasar kennel in
Florida made competing in the new AKC Owner-Handler
Series a priority throughout the year, and along with many
wins at the Group and BIS level, she ended the year
ranked as the Number One team in the series, all breeds,
showing her homebred MBIS & MRBIS & MOHBIS GCH
Karasar's Remembrance. Three year old “Britanee” is bred
and owned by Kerrie, her husband Neil Barthalette, and
longtime co-breeder and friend, Karen Mlynar.

The breeder-owner-handler trend continued at our regionals throughout the year. The Eastern and South-Central
specialties were won by breeder-owner-handlers, while the
Western specialty was won by an owner-handler with his
own breeding behind his winner, and the North-Central was
won by an owner-handler with an imported dog she has
shown to all of his wins herself. The Midwest specialty was
won by a class bitch, who was shown to the purple by her
breeder and owner, but handed off for BOB competition,
thereby narrowly missing being the third breeder/owner/
handled regional specialty winner for 2013.
Further, looking at the Top Ten Conformation Whippets
suit of the Dual Championship and it is worth noting that

dogs are owner-handled by one of their breeders.

But coursing was not the
only arena where Whippets topped the rest.
There are two relatively
new sports and a Whippet
has already made a huge
mark in one, while in the
other, Whippets look like a
breed that has potential to
be very competitive.

I first heard of Barbara Wayne in 1986,
when Jerry Klein, whom I knew from Afghan
Hounds, contacted me about a friend who wanted
a Whippet. Barbara had Afghans before she had
Whippets, so “Wylie” was her introduction to the
breed that she would come to love so much. His
registered name was Delacreme Bohem Impala,
and he came
from a litter

Ch. Whippoorwill Sonatina.
Wylie grew up
to become a strapping young dog; he cleared just
under the upper size limit but finished his championship pretty easily anyway. More importantly,
Barbara loved Wylie and kept his portrait on the
wall forever. For me it was the beginning of a
friendship that would last for more than a quarter
century.
Barbara had dogs growing up in Chicago,
and she purchased her first Afghan in 1976. She
owned and bred several champions, including one
who was exported by the co-owner to Japan. This
dog’s whereabouts remained the source of much
concern to Barbara, and one of her happiest moments was when she was reunited with him during a visit to Japan many years later, and learned
that he had lived a long and happy life in a family

with children who loved him.
I think the Afghans were history soon after
Wylie, though: from then on Whippets were her
breed. Wylie sired some nice champions, including
the top winning Ch. Charlemagne Prophecy
(Joey), who was out of a bitch David Gibbons and
Linda Griebe had
bred, Ch. Prophecy’s Temptation
(Shirley Rose). If I
remember correctly
both Joey and
Shirley Rose were
BIS winners, the
first in a long line
of top Whippets
that Barbara
owned, bred and/or
handled, often in
partnership with
friends and probably more often as handler than
in any other capacity. Barbara didn’t breed a lot,
and she preferred to have just a small number of
dogs at home, but her Charlemagne prefix nevertheless adorned some big winners.
For most of the 1990s I was only sporadically in touch with Barb. She kept me informed of
Wylie and his puppies, and we met at shows on
occasion, but the long distance between us meant
that I didn’t necessarily know everything that
went on with her dogs. That changed when I sent
a young dog to her “just to finish” in 1999: I
couldn’t show much and Barb liked the look of
him. The idea was that he should come back to
California eventually, but of course that never
Barbara LOVED going to dog show, more
so than almost any other person I know. Driving
for endless hours to get to the shows was nothing
to her: usually I was at home, talking on the
phone (Barb was one of the few people I talked
with on the phone; she disapproved of email even
more than I disliked telephones), marvelling at
the distance she covered. From the times that I
travelled with her I remember she always had a
big bag of candy on the dashboard and would tell
me stories of her mean and miserable Swedish
grandmother…
Barb with Ken Tippie (left) and Jerry Klein, both now AKC
judges, and Barb's first Whippet, Wylie, in 1986.
Barb appreciated the good things in life,
and she must have been the envy of everyone
happened: Barbara loved all her dogs, but the relationship she had with Blaze, alias Ch. Bohem
Circus Runaway, ROM was pretty special. Barb
also showed several of his littermates, one of
whom was Circus Pony (Whispa), whom I had
sent to Mrs. Yoshimoto in Japan as a puppy. The
association with Mrs. Yoshimoto was one of the
most important Barbara had in dogs, I’m sure,
and meant that Whispa made three (!) visits to
Barb to be shown in the U.S., and also that Barb
flew to Japan to visit him and his “family.” She
eventually finished at least three of his Japanborn kids to their AKC titles. The fact that Barb
qualified Whispa and his brothers for AWC’s Top
20 a total of five times indicates to some degree
the kind of success she had as a handler.
Blaze, incidentally, looked great and remembered me at the AWC national specialty in
2011. He died at nearly 15 on August 6, just a
few weeks before Barb had to go into hospital. As
I’m writing this I got the sad news that Whispa

who tried to control their diet since she never, ever got fat. She loved her glass of wine, too; in fact
one of the sad things when she became ill was
that wine didn’t taste good anymore. Her positive
enthusiasm was contagious, even for someone
who tends to look at the glass as half empty.
When I had a big birthday, years ago while we
lived in the far wilderness of California, she made
a surprise visit, having flown a couple of thousand
miles for the occasion. She was the light of the
party, everyone thought, nobody more so than
Chili (a third brother, Three Ring Circus), who
usually didn’t make a fuss but obviously loved and
remembered Barbara from the days she showed
him.
For those of us who are reluctant to send
dogs with professional handlers Barbara was a
wonderful solution. She never took on more than
a couple of dogs at a time, they travelled with her
to the shows, slept in her bed, and you could be
sure they would be in great shape, beautifully
handled, loved and spoiled rotten.

Barbara never wanted
to become an AKC judge, but
she judged AWC’s Top 20 in
2004, and in 2006 she
judged the Futurity at the
AWC national specialty. Her
winner was Oxford Tobell
Fire and Ice (Ella), who went
on to great fame later, not
only finishing her title but
winning multiple SBIS, including the National under Cindy Scott in 2008.
Among the last dogs that Barbara specialled was GCh. Festiva’s Lucy Is Fashionably
Late, who was shown by Barb to at least one of
her multiple SBIS wins; together they won a
Hound Group 1st as late as on July 13th this year.
Of course before that there was Ch. Moongaze
Jomyr Some Splainin’ To Do, Luna, who won almost everything possible, including No. 1 Whippet
in 2008 (according to the all-breed system) and
the 2009 AWC Top 20 competition. On August 23,

Everyone who loved Barbara must be
grateful to the people who provided invaluable
help for Bob and Barb during the last difficult
months. Amy Carlson realized how serious the situation was before anyone else did and flew in to
make sure Barbara received appropriate hospital
treatment, and also that Bob was taken care of.
Jonathan Hart provided unfailing emotional and
practical support, way above and beyond what
anyone could reasonably expect, for both Barb
and Bob during what must have been a chaotic
and frightening period. Jonathan even opened his
home to Barbara, and I know she was extremely
grateful to him for all his help. With Rosa and the

Italian Greyhound out of the house there were
still two old dogs left, Luna and Noelle (the 13year old Japanese import Ch. Whispa JP Charlemagne Noelle), to care for, and Jonathan looked
after both when necessary. I’m not sure what
would have happened if Amy and Jonathan had
not been there to help.
It was Amy who told me that if I wanted to
see Barbara again I had to hurry, so I flew to
Florida on very short notice to visit her in the hospital. It was not an easy visit, but it was great to
reminisce about dogs and people both past and
present. I brought a whole bunch of dog photos,
and I think Barb enjoyed looking at them.
Thanks to Take The Lead, the organization
that has helped so many dog people in difficult
circumstances, Barbara was able to spend her last
month at home with Bob and the old dogs. I knew
it was irrational, but Barb sounded pretty good
the last time I talked to her, and I was hoping
against hope there would be a turn for the better.
It was not to be. Barbara died at 4:00 AM on November 4. She had turned 63 years old just a
month earlier.
It looks like Bob, with Jonathan’s help,
may be able to take care of the old dogs. How he
will be able to deal with life without Barbara is a
different question. Bob didn’t go to the shows, so
most of the dog people didn’t know him, but it
was clear that he thought the world of Barb. And
even though I usually only saw Barbara a couple
of times each year I miss her more than I thought

was possible. I miss the phone calls and the upbeat reports from the shows, and it’s difficult to
accept that she is not there to talk to.
The outpouring of affection and love we’ve
seen during Barbara’s illness and after her death
is proof of the deep effect she had on people, both in Whippets and other breeds, both in
and outside of dogs.

This year we were finally able to get a Pet Reading Program
started at the local library. Donny loves all the kids who read
to him and all the library staff and volunteers. Our favorite little
reader was afraid of dogs until he met Donny. He now is on
the floor reading to him and cuddling with him. He stops every
so often to tell Donny how adorable he is. His mother told me
his reading scores have gone from below normal to well above
normal. There are other little readers who have improved their
reading skills too. We feel blessed to be able to participate in
the program and have positive results. When the kids see us
out walking or when we go in our local parade they always
come to say hi and pet Donny. Donny does the library every
other Monday and his aunt Taddie does it on the other Mondays. The only Mondays we have off is when the library is
closed.
Donny goes to the local dog park almost every day and gets
along well with all the little dogs there. He walks two miles on
would make a great visiting Therapy Pet. He became a member
of our local kennel club pet therapy group so that we could do the
visits needed for our initial Love on a Leash membership and be
covered by the club insurance. Donny was approved by the kennel club after approaching the first few members. They said, “We
can see that Donny is a very people-loving dog.” He passed with
flying colors. Donny has also earned his advanced therapy certificate for elder visits and his advanced Alzheimer's title. Each title
requires at least 50 visits to approved facilities.
We do at least 6 visits a month to Convalescent Care and As-
the sidewalks to the dog park and back and is good with all of the
bicycles and cars going by. We meet people in motorized scooters and others pushing baby carriages and he is very good with
them. He loves to stop and chat with people who want to visit with
him and let the kids pet him or the adults if they want to pet.. I
have not found anything that upsets him.
We average six visits a month to Assisted Living, Convalescent
Care, Transitional Care, and Adult Day Care facilities. Donny
loves seeing the residents and staff. The staff members love it
when he cuddles up to them. Donny has a special “woo-woo”

always comment on how soft and silky and clean he is and how
gentle he is.
Donny goes with his Aunt Taddie, a whippet and also a Love on
a Leash Advanced Therapy pet, to the gift shop at our local state
park (La Purisima Mission) where I volunteer two days a month.
He stays quietly on a blanket for the five hours we are there. He
will not get up to greet people unless he is told that it is OK. We
get busloads of school children that come through the gift shop
and he lies quietly on the blanket and sleeps through most of the
children’s visit. Donny goes with us to our weekly crafts class and
lies on the blanket after greeting all present. Everyone loves him
and he has a couple of very favorite people who join us.
Donny had enough hours to qualify for the new Therapy Dog
Title this year. He can now add the THD to his other titles.
I hope to be able to do Pet Therapy Visits for many more years
with Donny as he is just 5 years old now. Donny is also a great
companion to me and makes sure he knows where I’m at all the
time.

“ARROW”
Endeavor's Challenge The Wind
CD, BN, RE, OA, OAJ
Tales to Tails is a literacy program at the Santa Cruz Library in
Santa Cruz, Calif. where children can sign up for a private twentyminute slot to read to an attentive certified therapy dog. Research
shows that children who have frequent reading experiences such
as reading aloud become more eager, skilled readers. Studies
also show that therapy dogs provide a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment for children to practice. Most of the children read
very well or above grade level. The parents value their education.
“Arrow” is certified through Therapy Dog International. He (and
his roommate, Moth) each do three half hour sessions on Saturdays.
Arrow has a tendency to reach out his paw and pet a child as he
or she reads. He is more engaged with the reader and appears to
really listen, most of the other dogs just go to sleep, and sometimes he gets up and looks in the book. The first time he and I
went there were three sisters they’re suppose to read one at a
time but by the end they were all around him. The littlest had her
legs entwined with his. At the end of a session the child gets a
bookmark that says “I read to Moth/Arrow” with the dog’s picture.
The following is a letter from one of the Parents:
“My son Oliver, almost seven, has been reading to them as part of
Santa Cruz County Public Library's Tales to Tails Program this fall
and winter season. We were amazed to see our son, an emerging
reader, spending up to 45 minutes reading to either Moth or Arrow
during our Saturday morning visits. The dogs are both are affectionate and comforting. Oliver enjoys it when Arrow rests his paws
across Oliver's lap, almost as if Arrow is petting him. And Oliver
loves it when Arrow nuzzles and kisses him. Moth listens attentively and curls up right next to Oliver, or stands and watches him.
Both Whippets are a joy to spend time with, they are calm and
receptive to our son, and enjoy the attention he gives them. Oliver's reading has greatly improved since we started the Tales to
Tails Program in the fall. His teacher has encouraged him and his
fellow classmates to read out loud every day, and by far, the longest reading sessions we have are those we spend at the library
with Moth and Arrow. Many of Oliver's first grade classmates are
now signing up for opportunities to read to the dogs at the library.
I am grateful to Dale Noble and her Whippets, Moth and Arrow,
for the tremendous public service they are providing for our son's
benefit and the next generation in our community.“
Arrow also works in a lot of performance activities. He has
many Obedience, Rally and Agility titles. Along with his roommate, “Moth”, he participates in many demos and parades. His
newest venture is working on his Tracking title.
