Dear Readers,
Those of you on the online Whippet lists spent a lot of
time lately reading about Silken Windhounds and where
they stand when it comes to AKC breed recognition. On
the one hand there are many of us who remember when
a certain Whippet fancier in the early 80’s tried to convince the world that he had discovered the “long lost”
longhair gene and had the puppies to prove it. Further
investigation proved him wrong, a Whippet x Sheltie
cross proved to be the actual case. Now we have the
Silken Windhounds that are descended from that cross
and have Borzoi blood besides. They’re attractive and
charming and will probably eventually get their recognition, hopefully when those opposed to them have forgiven them their cross-bred beginnings. — The very Best
of Wishes for everyone for this holiday season!!!

President’s Message
I want to take a moment to remind everyone to be sure to pay your
dues by January 1, 2010, so that you can vote in the upcoming
election for the Board of Directors Class of 2013. Please, be sure to
get ads to Wendy Clark for the next issue of the Whippet News
Annual if you plan to advertise in that issue. Also, the ballots for the
2011 National judge are due by December 21st if you haven’t yet
returned your ballot. Remember too, that those ballots must be
returned to the accounting firm in envelopes with a return address
that includes each member’s name or include that information on the
ballot itself.
Since this is the last such column for 2009, I would like to use this
space as an opportunity to thank the members of the Board that
have spent many, many hours and expended great amounts of effort
this year in working to ensure the integrity of the AWC and the
Whippet as a breed. I would also like to thank them for the support
they have given me since being elected President in April.
The Holiday Season is officially in full swing. I hope everyone had a
Happy Thanksgiving – for those of you who are not from the US, I
hope you had a very pleasant day on Thursday, November 26th. I
sincerely hope that the rest of this Holiday Season, regardless of
which holiday you celebrate, brings you Peace and Joy and
Happiness and the comfort of family and friends – both two and fourlegged. My best wishes to all of you for a Very Happy and Prosperous
New Year, too.
Until next year – be safe and healthy,
Russell

SECRETARY’S REPORT
The nominating committee is hard at work putting together a slate for the upcoming Board elections. Those
ballots with biographies will be mailed to the membership
(first class, I promise) In January.
As of November 30, 2009, the American Whippet Club,
Inc. has 341 members declared for the Purina Parent Club
Partnership Program. From January 1, 2009 through November 30, 2009, 99 members have submitted weight circles resulting in a total of $1,733.78 accumulated thus far
for the 2009 Program. Half of the earnings each year are
pre-designated for canine health research and contribute
to supporting Canine Health Foundation grants in which
researchers aim to better understand the genetics behind
many conditions affecting our dogs. In a couple of months
we will receive a check from Purina for the other half of
this amount and it is eligible to provide supplemental funding of canine health research or may be used to fund educational and/or rescue efforts.
In the past we have donated this to several difference
organizations include the Whippet Health Foundation.
Please continue to send in your weight circles, it helps canine health issues as well as our Whippets.

TUCSON NATIONAL 2010
I went to Tucson in November for several reasons one of
which was to stay at our host hotel to meet with their Marketing Director and take care of some details. Here are my
observations.
First of all, the weather was wonderful and should be in
the 70’s and 80’s in April. There are huge grassy courtyards to walk your dogs or just sit around and visit with
friends. If your room is on the backside of the buildings it’s
a short walk to the grass or there are some gravel areas.
Across from the front of the hotel is an enormous gravel
and dirt area where dogs can also be walked. If anyone
would like to see an aerial view, please e-mail me and I’ll
forward some pictures.
All rooms have a counter with microwaves, refrigerators
and the beds have new pillowtop mattresses. The room
price includes breakfast and cocktails/snacks in the evening, therefore we will not have our traditional hospitality
room. The breakfast bar was great. Hot items, a waffle
maker and all the cold cereals, bagels, sweet rolls etc you
can eat. The bar is huge with lots of tables where you can
eat during the day or evening if you want.
The hotel does not have a full blown restaurant, however we are planning 2 cookouts with Margarita bars and
there will be a kiosk set up on the grass each day for
lunch. I ate there and the menu included a hot dog or
hamburger, salads, soft drink and chips for around $6.50.
There was a WONDERFUL Mexican restaurant about 5
blocks away called El Charro (Good Margaritas too!. I
highly recommend that.
The ballroom is over 10,000 square feet and all the vendors will be in there along with the ring. All the doors in
the ballroom open to the courtyard.
All the applications are in and approved and the premium list will go to the Super the first part of January.
It’s only 4 months away!!

Tucson, Arizona
December 2009
Our host hotel is the beautiful InnSuites Tucson City Center in Tucson, Arizona. We have a great room rate of $89.00 per night for a Studio Queen (2 beds) or a Studio King (1 bed). The Executive/Family Suites are 2 room suites with a rate of $99.00 for King (1 bed) or Queen (2 beds) and this includes a convertible sofa in the living area. All rooms have a microwave and a refrigerator and the hotel provides a free hot break‐
fast buffet every morning. You must state that you will be attending the American Whippet Club Spe‐
cialty and please let them know if you are coming with dogs or without dogs. Reservations can be made by calling 1‐520‐622‐3000 or on the hotel web site at : http://stmarys.innsuites.com. NOTE: All of the King and Queen Suites are sold out! NO EXPENS WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE GRASS IN THE COURTYARD AREAS. Donna Lynch is the Chairperson for our Trophies this year. You can contact Donna at 508‐636‐0705 or [email protected]. We have beautiful Horsehair Pottery from the Navajo Nation for trophies and donations are always appreciated. Check the web site to see pictures of the trophies. The RV Parking, Vendor Application, Catalog Advertising, Catalog Pre‐Order and Logo Shirt forms are available on the web site and they will be included in the next several issues of The Whippet News. All deadlines will be March 1, 2010. Please try to get your forms sent in ASAP. Included in this issue of Whippet News is the information on the Special Dinners and The Wrap‐It‐Up Closing Party. Instead of having a sit down buffet type dinner (which was getting too high in cost), it was decided to have a Cocktail Party instead. I know that everyone wants to get a chance to say their good‐byes and congratulations that night. What better way to circulate than to have a cocktail party. The type of Hors D’oeuvers we will be having are sure to fill you up and we will be having Margarita and Champagne Stations along with the cash bar! If you have any questions, please email Connie or Rhonda. There will be a Race Meet on Saturday, April 17. This meet is sponsored by River City Racing Association and I want to thank Jean Balint for taking care of this. We will be looking for volunteers to help in all areas of the specialty, from the performance events to clean up duties. Please drop us an email if you would like to help for a few hours with one of the many jobs at the National. Please check the website on a regular basis for information. We have been adding to the site as we go along and more will be coming in the future. Official Web Site - WWW.AWC2010.COM

which three finished (the fourth won a specialty puppy class
but was not shown again): Ch.’s Bohem Time Flies and Just

At 12 months she won a 4-pt. major and beat a bunch of

focus on Winona (I showed her to a half dozen group wins
in 1998), Annie won more points and finished the day after
the National Specialty in 1998.
With 15 champions to her credit, 7 of which won BIS and/
or SBIS, we feel Annie contributed to the breed. At home
she was dominated for most of her life by her super-bitch
mom, Betsy, but she never learned to be a “bitch” herself...
She never met a dog, person or foodbowl she didn’t like,

WRAP Report: Lost Whippets
By Ruth Beall
It starts out with a phone call, your friend in tears: “My Whippet got loose! I’ve looked all over and can’t find her. What am I
going to do?”
“Lost Whippet” took on a whole new meaning with the highlypublicized loss of Ch. Bohem C’est La Vie (Vivi), a beautiful show
dog with a promising career, at JFK Airport in New York in February 2005 after the Westminster Dog Show. Volunteers turned out
to search for her, and it seemed the whole world checked in daily
to read updates on the heart-wrenching search for this little Whippet girl, who has never been found. Vivi’s story turned public
awareness to the plight of the lost dog, the anxiety that the
owner goes through, and raised many more questions than could
be answered about how a dog could survive through harsh
weather, or whether the dog would ‘go wild’ after a period of time
being loose.
Of all the things to come from the saga of Vivi, there is at least
one positive outcome—more resources are available to distraught
owners now, to guide them in their search. There are many websites devoted to giving advice on what to do—how to search for a
lost dog, where to post information, and how to catch the dog.
Even more are available to post notices about the lost dogs.
As webmaster for Whippet Rescue and Placement (WRAP), I
started receiving requests in 2007 to post notices for lost Whippets, and the ‘Lost Whippets’ page (http://www.whippetrescue.com/lost_whippets.html) evolved from there. In addition
to lost Whippet postings, there are links to websites with information on how to search for a lost Whippet . We also have a ‘Found
Whippets’ page (http://www.whippet-rescue.com/
found_whippets.html), where owners and breeders can look to
see if any of the Found Whippets might be their Lost Whippet.
The most heart-warming story of all may be that of Casey, a 7year-old Whippet who was lost in October, 2007. For 18 months,
he remained on the WRAP ‘Lost Whippets’ page, with no updates.
In March 2009, we received word that, after 18 months, Casey
was found! I still cry for Casey and his family when I read his
story. His face stole my heart the first time I saw his photo, and
I’ve never been able to forget him.
Every posting has a story to tell. So far during 2009 alone, we
have received word of 32 lost Whippets—almost three per month.
Of those, 18, joyfully, were returned safely home; two, sadly,
were found dead; and 12 are still missing, offering no closure to
their owners. These numbers are just from the Whippets that
came to our attention in WRAP and were posted on the ‘Lost
Whippets’ page. There likely were others that we never heard
about.
Not all of the postings we have had since 2007 tell how the dog
was lost, but some do:
*3 were startled by loud noises on July 4 or another holiday and
bolted/got loose.
*1 was startled by a loud noise and bolted
*8 got loose from new owners or foster homes
*3 were in new/unfamiliar surroundings and got loose
*2 chased other animals and never returned
*5 got loose while in the care of others
*3 slipped their collars while walking on leash
*2 jumped the fence
*1 was stolen from the yard
*1 was attacked by other dogs and got loose
*4 got loose from the yard.
While those of us who are far removed from the area may
feel helpless to do anything but offer advice and encouragement to the owners of the lost dogs, there is one thing we all
can do. We can do our best to try to prevent the loss of our
own or others’ beloved pets in the future. Not every loss can
be anticipated or prevented, but many could be, with greater
awareness and planning. We offer some suggestions for
keeping your Whippets safe:
When traveling, take extra care to make sure
dogs are walked in as quiet a place as possible, ensure collars are securely fitted, and
hold onto leashes securely while walking.
If you have a dog that is easily startled or
scared and must walk the dog on leash,
consider using a harness instead of, or in
addition to, a collar.
At home, walk the fence-line frequently to ensure there are no gaps or holes in the fence
or signs of digging under the fence. Do not
leave dogs outdoors unattended if the area
where they go is out of your sight, especially at night.
If you have a fence-jumper, do not leave the
dog unattended or off-leash.
Never leave new dogs unattended outdoors,
even within a fenced area.
Until a new dog is accustomed to the family and
its new surroundings, consider exiting
through the garage door, if you have one,
when leaving the home, so that if the dog
squeezes past you to get out the door, he/
she is still safely contained within the garage, where you can catch/get the dog
back into the house. If you don’t have a
garage attached to the house, consider
putting an x-pen around the entrance to
the house so the dog cannot get out while
you are leaving the house or letting visitors
into the house.
For information on how you can adopt a Whippet in the
Rescue program, please visit the WRAP website at
www.whippet-rescue.com, where you will find a list of Whippets who need homes. If you cannot adopt, please consider
making a donation to WRAP. Donations can be mailed to
WRAP Treasurer Jean Schroeder at 17502 S. 750 W. Wanatah, IN 46390.

The Whippe t News  December 2009
Dear AWC Member,
As some of you know, The International Silken
Windhound Society applied to the American Kennel Club
for acceptance as a new breed. We, the Board of Directors of the AWC, sent the following letter to AKC vigorously protesting the Borzoi/Whippet cross.
Last week an AKC committee met and turned down
the application. The basis of the denial was twofold: it
being a mixed breed, of course most breeds can trace
their origins to other breeds, and that is has only been
being bred since 1985.
Following is the letter that was sent from the AWC
Board of Directors to the AKC:
We, the American Whippet Club (AWC) Board of Directors, are writing to the AKC in vigorous objection to
the recognition of the Silken Windhound (SW) into the
Foundation Stock Service program or any other pathway
within AKC that could lead to full registration eligibility.
The cross breeding of Whippets and Borzoi and the
inclusion of the "Longhaired Whippet" (Whippet x Borzoi
x Sheltie mix) from Walter Wheeler's Windsprite Kennel
in order to create a new breed (SW) in the late 1980's
goes against the tenets of AKC’s Mission Statement:
"The American Kennel Club is dedicated to upholding
the integrity of its registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. Founded
in 1884, the AKC and its affiliated organizations advocate for the purebred dog as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being, work to protect the
rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog
ownership".
Since the first use of the term Cockapoo in the 1950’s
to the 1970’s development of a Maltese/Shih Tzu cross
now called a Kyi-Leo, the canine world has been beset
by hybrids that are created for limited reasons. Recently these mixes have come under the profitable term "Designer Breeds" and have replaced purebreds in popularity in puppy mill retail outlets. Breed
parent clubs are continuously bombarded with color,
coat, or size issues when fanciers seek to establish the
rare as commonplace. Some occurrences of breed disqualification have been around almost as long as the
breed, yet in spite of the common mission of standardoriented fanciers, formation of renegade clubs and acceptance by many of the rare, non-AKC or worldwide
registries has occurred. Thankfully the AKC has not recognized such anomalies as the White German Shepherd,
Doberman, Boxer or Schnauzer, the Long Haired Whippet or several other mutations of breed standards not
recognized by parent clubs.
The AWC is aware that the International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS) has applied for inclusion into the
AKC FSS program. We fail to see how this hybrid complies with the following two rules defining a "rare
breed":
A). The FSS is not open to "rare" breeds that are a
variation of an AKC-registerable breed or the result of a
combination of two AKC-recognized breeds. (Note: The
SW is a combination of Borzoi, Whippet and Shetland
Sheepdog).
B). Applicant breeds must provide a written breed
history documenting the distinct breed over a period of
many decades. (Note: Since the studbook for the
ISWS closed in 2000, they have not been in existence
as a breed for a single decade, let alone many. If accepted at this time, it would be possible to have an F2
or F3 generation [3rd generation from the mix of two
distinct breeds] considered as a true purebred. How
many purebred breeders have that much consistency in
their own breeding programs using ONE breed? Most
bovine genetic recovery programs do not accept breeding stock as purebred until the 7th generation or later
after the introduction of a different breed for genetic
enhancement. This should be no different in dogs.)
As an example, the Black Russian Terrier began its
journey as a breed in 1930, over 70 years ago. The
breed was created by the selective interbreeding of
Rottweilers, Giant Schnauzers and Airedale Terriers, by
the Russian Military. The intent was to develop a native
breed that would fulfill the need for a large, working
terrier, suitable for a number of tasks, while being able
to endure the harshness of the Russian winter. In
1956, this culminated in the establishment of foundation stock that bred true at Red Star Kennel, the state
operated organization chartered to provide working
dogs for the armed services . The Black Russian Terrier
was recognized by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture
in May of 1981, internationally by the FCI in May of
1984, and by AKC in 2004. This history shows a distinct
purpose for the original cross breeding, followed by
decades of breeding true prior to recognition.
In contrast, the ISWS standard cites no actual purpose for the breed other than wanting a medium sized
sighthound with long coat. This is taken from the ISWS
website:
"The Silken Windhound, a recently developed rare
breed, is the result of a long-awaited dream to fill the
niche in the Sighthound breeds with a smaller, longhaired hound. In appearance, the Silkens pay tribute
to those champion foundation dogs from the breeds
from which they evolved, yet they are unique among
the Sighthound breeds. They are purebred dogs with
an Official Breed Standard that outlines the "ideal"
dog."
The only mention of hunting or function comes under
the Temperament section of the standard:
TEMPERAMENT: The Silken Windhound is an intelligent hound of balanced character. While this breed
exhibits strong prey drive in the field, they are gentle,
affectionate, devoted companion animals in the home.
An unwarranted show of timidity or nervousness, or
any sign of hostility towards people or dogs, should be
penalized."
Not only does the AWC fail to see how the appearThe Whippet News  December 2009

ance of the SW pays tribute to the Whippet or Borzoi
but also objects to them being called a rare breed or
a purebred with less than 10 years of carefully documented history following studbook closure. There is
no mention of what type of prey this rare breed is
supposed to hunt or any documentation of it hunting
at all. What, then, is the true purpose of the SW? To
provide people with a smaller, haired sighthound? As
the parent club of the Whippet, bred to have a specific function, we do not consider this a "function" at
all.
In 1983 the AKC took action to eliminate Walter
Wheeler’s dogs (source of the Longhaired mixes)
from the stud book and cancel litter registrations after the AWC reported that some of the dogs registered by Wheeler were indeed mixed breeds being
paraded as the long lost coated anomaly in Whippets
(no such gene or variation exists). Despite the fact
that the originator of the SW, Francie Stull, has publicly divorced herself from the hybrids called Longhaired Whippets, there are numerous pedigrees on
the ISWS website that include the title of "Longhaired Whippet Champion" (LH Ch). If the breed’s
founder does not recognize the Longhaired Whippet,
then why does this false title remain on the pedigrees?
Recently the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) Board of Directors took it upon themselves to recognize the ISWS registry and allow the
SW into their Limited Stake, the first step toward full
breed recognition within their coursing program.
This came after an original outcry against such a decision from ASFA member clubs and in spite of a
soundly defeated motion in early 2009. The AWC
strongly objected to the ASFA inclusion of the SW as
it is not recognized as a breed by any major international kennel club. As a result of this decision, Whippet entries at ASFA trials have dropped, some trials
have been cancelled and the AWC national specialty
coursing trial in 2010 has changed to include only an
AKC trial. The likely financial motivation behind the
acceptance of the SW has been offset by the drop in
Whippet entries and is likely to cause a net loss overall in entry fees and a reduction in Whippets running
under the ASFA umbrella.
It is our fear that recognizing the SW will set a
dangerous precedent to allow other designer breeds
with limited history and little to no stated or documented function to apply for recognition and acceptance within the purebred program of the American
Kennel Club. It is our hope that the AKC will not accept this variation as a breed.
Thank you for your attention regarding this serious
matter.

How to Write a Whippet Book… Part 2 (update)
As soon as you complain that nothing is happening
it’s a sure bet things will start to move… I had hardly
sent off the “How to Write A Whippet Book” saga to
Christine for the last issue of Whippet News before the
publisher wrote saying it was time for proof-reading.
This means that for the last month I have re-read
every word I wrote several months ago, making corrections, updating old records (much of the book was written in 2008) and answering their questions and requests for clarification.
Poor Lisa Costello got roped in to help with a lot of
queries in the “Multi-Purpose” chapter. This overview of
all the activities you can get involved in with Whippets
outside of the show ring will be more complete than
anyone’s ever seen before, and that’s thanks to Lisa.
The field activities in particular are incredibly complex,
so many active organizations who all have their own
activities, titles and awards, and both Lisa and I are
very conscious of how important it is to get it all right.
(All those abbreviated titles can drive a publisher nuts:
I still don’t know how they will deal with that and can’t
promise that they will agree to include all of them.)
The good news is that they have apparently not cut
the text, in spite of the fact that the manuscript was
about twice as long as specified in the contract. The
bad news is that they haven’t even started on the photographs yet… so thanks to those of you who sent photos and let me keep them a little longer. (I did all the
scanning myself and sent high resolution images on a
DVD to the publisher, but I’m not a professional scanner and it would be too bad if they decide they want to
use an image, need a better scan… and it turns out I
had returned that photo to the owner.)
Whether they will have the book ready for the AWC
National Specialty in Tucson as initially hoped I don’t
know. I doubt it, but they’ve said they “may have some
material ready by then,” whatever that means. Whenever it is published, I want the book to be worth waiting for and something that can be around for a while.
I’m not planning on doing any more updates…
Thanks to the several people who were kind
enough to write to say they found the information interesting.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas…..

Please READ and help us by following these GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING ADS:
1.
TYPE your ad copy. If you cannot type it, then PRINT CLEARLY! (especially pedigrees!!!) Proof your copy carefully.
Try to keep your copy short. The best ads are the simplest.
2.
Send good quality photos. Send either black & white or good quality color photographs. Avoid pebble finish prints.
DO NOT SEND COLOR PHOTOCOPIES OR INKJET PRINTS!! Send the original photo or digital image instead. If you are sending
DIGITAL IMAGES for your ads, the resolution should be 300 dpi AT THEIR FINAL SIZE (the size they will be used in the ad).
3.
Do NOT cut your photos!! All you need say is “dog only” or “dog and handler only” or whatever. Or you can indicate special
cropping on a paper overlay if you prefer (remember Pedigree Section photos are all “dog only”). LABEL the back of each
photo with a gummed label, including your name and address and the dog’s name (do not write on the back with a pen or a
felt marker - it can show through on the front and ruin your photograph). If you are including several photos, number them
and put corresponding numbers on your layout page. All photos will be returned with your advertiser’s copy of the Annual.
4.
PLACEMENT - Individuals who wish to be placed together should clearly indicate BY ADVERTISER NAME (not kennel name, or
dog’s name) who they wish to be with, and in what order, when sending advertising or payment for ads. Every effort will be
made to accommodate these requests.
5.
All ads must be paid in U.S. funds by check or via PayPal (see link on AWC home page: www.americanwhippetclub.net, then
click “2009 Annual Advertising” along left menu bar).
We will gladly set up your ads for you at NO extra charge, but if you wish to submit CAMERA READY ARTWORK,
please follow technical requirements as specified on following page!
• • • All covers are reserved on a first come basis / contact me by phone or email for availability • • •
• • • • You do NOT have to be a member of the American Whippet Club to advertise in the AWC Whippet News Annual • • • •
CLUB PAGES - Regional Whippet clubs are invited to send a one-page report on their 2009 activities to be included in the
Annual at no charge. Send your page, TYPED or camera ready, and submitted by January 15, 2010. Don’t be left out!
You may also send an Independent Specialty results page and BOB photo.
As always, your CANDID PHOTO SUBMISSIONS are most welcome! (Everybody loves them!!)

YOUR PAYMENT still must be received by the advertising deadline of January 15, 2010.
With your payment, include your name, mailing address, and either a phone number or email contact for
questions.
ALL ARTWORK must be received BY THE END OF JANUARY, 2010.
SOFTWARE supported: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Photoshop, Corel
Draw, Macromedia Freehand, and QuarkXpress.
Fonts must be TYPE 1 or OpenType fonts; send the fonts even if they are embedded.
PDF files: We will accept PDF files as camera ready art, but they must be saved as high resolution PDF’s
(“press quality”) with fonts embedded. If in color, they must also be saved as CMYK. We would prefer
that the native file that the ad was created in also be included, along with all support files and fonts, in
case the PDF isn’t correctly made or there is a problem with it. This will enable us to use the original files
to ensure correct output.
WNAnnual final trim size: 8.5” x 11”
MARGINS of .5” (1/2”) should be allowed on all sides of page for anything deemed important (text,
dog parts, etc). I would recommend allowing .75” (3/4”) on the bound edge for anything important.
BLEEDS should be +.125” (1/8”) on all sides (8.75” x 11.25”), however original margins requirements still
apply (see above)
Black and white ads must be submitted in GRAYSCALE, whether they are hard copy originals or digital
files.
l
Color ads must be submitted in CMYK.
l
Include a hard copy, jpg, or pdf PROOF of your ad, so we know what it’s supposed to look like.
l
l
l
LABEL ALL ELECTRONIC FILES with the advertiser’s NAME (not kennel name), the page number and
position; for example: “Smith p1L.pdf”, “Smith p2R.pdf” If a file contains more than one page, be sure
to specify whether the ads begin on a LEFT or RIGHT side page.
Sorry, but FILM is longer accepted. The printer has had too many problems with provided film. Please
submit files as specified, or let us do the set-up for you.
Pedigree Section pages cannot be submitted as camera ready.
Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions!
