Fastway Couriers Gold Coast are major supporters of catamaran racing, with both SYC and the NACRA class. General Manager, Steve Curtis explained, “We are very proud to be associated with the NACRA class and SYC. It is fantastic for the club and the class to host such a major event in south east Queensland and we jumped at the opportunity to be involved.” With the introduction of the NACRA 17 as the new Olympic catamaran and the America’s Cup being raced on multihulls, catamaran racing is experiencing new levels of popularity. Competitors launched from SYC’s facilities at Hollywell and racing was held outside the breakwater directly in front of Main Beach. SYC has a proud reputation for hosting major= events and as added spectacle for competitors the Australian Sailing Team 470 crews were on hand completing some final training before heading to Europe for the season. DAY ONE Sailors were greeted with near perfect conditions for the opening day of racing with south easterly breezes between 12-17kts. Principal Race Officer Ross Wilson would aim for three races and race one started bang on time. Current Australian Champion Adam Beattie had a horrendous start to the event, being involved in a pre-race collision with his port bow being split and meant he rushed to shore for urgent repairs. Adam and crew Jamie Leitner managed to return to shore and replace the hull, but not before missing the first two races. This opened to the door for previous Australian Champion, Mick Guinea and crew Viv Haydon to open the event with a win in race one. Fellow North Queensland sailors Luke McMullen, second and Dale Mitchell, third completed the podium for race one. Race two saw Luke McMullen go one better and take the bullet from Warren Guinea with Musab Alhadi representing Oman take third place. The third race saw Adam Beattie return to the race course and take the bullet from Mick Guinea with John Wright from South Australia take an impressive third place. SYC and Fastway had organised a beach party every afternoon with a sailors ‘happy hour’ to help wash some of the salt away! After receiving ISAF status in 2010 the NACRA Infusion class has held two World Championships in Holland as part of the Texel Week. 2013 saw the event head to the southern hemisphere for the first time with the event held at Southport Yacht Club, with Fastway Couriers Gold Coast signing up as major sponsors. OFFICIAL SPONSO RS: DAY THREE After the relaxing day prior, competitors were again greeted by a strong south east breeze in the low 20kt range. The race committee sent competitors to the race area and again with great precision got the race underway. Shortly after the start, a squall made its way down the course clocking the breeze to the left. Mal Richardson and Warren Guinea took advantage of this and tacked early to the top mark. Guinea and crew Aaron Linton were first to round with Richardson and crew Dan Haydon in second. However in a sight that is rarely seen, Warren Guinea cartwheeled handing the lead to Richardson/Haydon who immediately looked to follow with there own nosedive but managed to salvage the ‘oops’ without capsizing. The drama allowed Beattie/ Leitner and Guinea/Haydon to pass and the two were now battling for the lead. Beattie/ Leitner sailed a smart second windward and lead at the top mark and down the last run. Without wanting to be left out of the highlight reel Beattie/Leitner capsized through the last gybe to the finish allowing Guinea/ Haydon to sneak past and take the win. Richardson had recovered from his earlier capsize and also snuck past Beattie to claim second. In a frantic effort Beattie had righted the boat but broke his spinnaker pole trying to salvage a place, backwards through the line and still claim a handy third place. Conditions had now deteriorated, and PRO Ross Wilson called off any remaining races for the day. The single race played into the hands of Beattie, who moved into first place with a third, first and two seconds (as average points). It is unlikely they would have been ready for a second race for the day which would have drastically impacted on their average points. DAY FOUR ‘Postcard Sailing’ for day four, this term is often used in sailing articles, but with the sun shining, a nice 15-18 south east breeze and the skyscrapers of the Gold Coast as a background this was certainly the case. Four races were held and competitors enjoyed beautiful conditions and close racing. Adam Beattie took the first race of the day ahead of Warren Guinea with brother Mick Guinea in third. The second race of the day again saw Beattie take the gun ahead of Mick Guinea with Dale Mitchell in third. The third race of the day saw Warren Guinea take his first win for the event ahead of Beattie with Mick Guinea in third. Mick Guinea took the final race of the day ahead of Dale Mitchell with John Wright claiming his second third place for the event. Beattie scored his worst race to date with a ninth placing, which would no doubt not help his average points. With one day of racing remaining, it was now clear that the event was shaping up as a race between two, with Mick Guinea and Viv Haydon now leading by 0.6 points over Adam Beattie and Jamie Leitner. Warren Guinea and Aaron Linton were sitting in third a further 11.4 points behind. Beattie/Letiner who as a team have spent the last three European summers racing the F18 circuit, were keen to improve on their third place at the 2011 NACRA World Championships, while Guinea was also keen to improve on his best place of fifth at a NACRA Worlds. DAY FIVE The incident and average points awarded to Beattie/Leitner on day one, meant that deciding the overall winner was going to be a task left for the support teams and their calculators. PRO Ross Wilson would again aim for four races and conditions were vastly different from previous days racing. A much lighter and swinging south east breeze greeted competitors for the final races. Race one of the day saw Oman sailor, Musab Alhadi take his first bullet, ahead of Brett Sellers and Vicky Francis from New Zealand, who were using the event as vital training for their NACRA 17 Olympic Campaign. Beattie/Leitner completed the top three. The second race of the day saw Mal Richardson take the gun ahead of Miranda Powrie from New Zealand who was also using this event and the proceeding F18 Nationals as vital training before the arrival of her NACRA 17. Musab Alhadi was having a fine day taking third. The overall lead was now very confusing with Beattie and Mick Guinea both having poor results, 11th and 13th respectively. The third race of the day saw Mick Guinea nail the start at the pin end and lead from start to finish to take the bullet from Beattie/Leitner who fought their way back to second from deep in the pack. Gordon Beath and crew Harry Bethwaite sailed their best race to date with a third place. With one race left, the sums had been done and it was quite simple. Whilst Guinea/Haydon had a narrow lead whoever won the final race would take the event and be crowned the ‘World Champions’. This time it was Beattie/Leitner who won the pin end and opened up a handy lead. Guinea/Haydon had a shocking start and decided to hit the right hand side, this proved costly as they rounded the top mark outside the top 10. Beattie had stretched his lead and controlled the race. Guinea/ Haydon fought back and managed to finish in second place for the race ahead of Leigh McNally and crew Luke Duncan. Returning to the beach, both crews remained uncertain of the final result, but it was confirmed upon returning to shore that Beattie/Leitner had claimed the Championships by 0.2 of a point. DAY TWO Competitors arrived for day two with a building south east breeze caused by a building ridge of pressure. PRO Ross Wilson held competitors ashore whilst assessing the conditions offshore and shortly cancelled the days racing with conditions worstening. Many competitors took the opportunity to carry out repairs from a hectic first day of racing, whilst others enjoyed some of the local sights of the beautiful Gold Coast. Adam Beattie carried out further repairs and was later granted average points for race one and two by the race committee.
