It is an honor to be the organization’s new
Executive Director and to celebrate the 57th San
Francisco International Film Festival with you. I
look forward to sharing the Bay Area’s
enormous passion for cinema over the coming
weeks. Many of this year’s finest films feature
throughout the Festival. I urge you to sample
these remarkable stories from around the world
and closer to home and discuss them with our
visiting filmmakers and fellow film lovers. That
electrifying feeling of discovering a new cultural
voice that speaks to your heart is among life’s
great pleasures. We are grateful to our board,
members, and donors for their help in making
the Festival such a key force in the culture of our
community.

Celebrated screenwriter Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove, Drive) delivers a
stylish directorial debut, with this adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith suspense
thriller gorgeously filmed on location in Greece and Turkey. In 1962, a well-heeled
couple (Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst) come to know an American
expatriate acting as an Athens tour guide (Oscar Isaac). But an incident at the
couple’s hotel puts all three in danger and creates a precarious interdependence
between them. (UK/USA/France 2014, 97 min)
Filmmaker Gia Coppola expertly adapts James Franco’s book Palo Alto, about
teenagers shifting from childhood innocence to adult responsibility. This richly
atmospheric ensemble drama features a terrific cast, including Emma Roberts,
Jack Kilmer and Franco himself. The film gives the passion and anxiety of
teenage life an undeniably cinematic glow. (USA 2014, 98 min)

[ AWARDS & TRIBUTES ]
FOUNDER’S DIRECTING AWARD PETER J. OWENS AWARD
An Evening with Richard Linklater
RECIPIENT TO BE ANNOUNCED
DATE, TIME, LOCATION TBD
FRIDAY, MAY 2
7:00 pm Castro Theatre
429 Castro Street (near Market)
$20 members, $25 general
One of the most profound and prolific American
independent filmmakers of the last 20 years,
Richard Linklater first burst onto the scene with his
scrappy time capsule of Austin weirdness, Slacker
(SFIFF 1991). Since then, Linklater’s work has
graced international film festival lineups, helped
launch the careers of a number of prominent actors
(Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey)
and garnered several Oscar nominations. His
much–celebrated new film Boyhood is his 18th
feature film. The evening will include a clip reel of
career highlights and an onstage interview followed
by a screening of Boyhood.
BOYHOOD
Richard Linklater
Filming over the course of 12 years, Linklater
and his cast depict a young man’s journey from a
6-year-old boy to 18-year-old college freshman.
The resulting film “has no precedent” according
to the Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy.
“Never has the long arc of the journey from
childhood to college been portrayed as cohesively
and convincingly as Richard Linklater has done.”
(USA 2014, 162 min)
Join the Festival for a very special award night
celebrating the career of one of cinema’s great
acting talents. Named for the longtime San
Francisco benefactor of arts and charitable
organizations, Peter J. Owens (1936–1991), this
award honors an actor whose work exemplifies
brilliance, independence and integrity. The evening
will include a clip reel of career highlights and an
onstage interview with the artist, followed by a film
screening. Check festival.sffs.org for updates.

Moving fluidly between film, television, academia
and the art world, filmmaker and installation artist
Isaac Julien combines a fine art background and
inspiration from current issues and events to create
unique and evocative work for the screen. While
studying painting and fine art film at St Martin’s
School of Art from which he graduated in 1984,
Isaac Julien co-founded “Sankofa Film and Video
Collective” in which he was active from 1983–1992.
Julien was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001
for his film The Long Road to Mazatlán (1999),
made in collaboration with Javier de Frutos, and
Vagabondia (2000), choreographed by Javier de
Frutos. Earlier works include Frantz Fanon: Black
Skin, White Mask (SFIFF 1997); Young Soul Rebels
(1991), which was awarded the Semaine de la
Critique Prize at the Cannes Film Festival the same
year; and the acclaimed poetic documentary
Looking for Langston (1989).
Ten Thousand Waves
Isaac Julien
Originally inspired by the death of Chinese cockle
pickers in Morecambe Bay, Julien’s immersive
film installation, commissioned by MoMA,
interweaves contemporary Chinese culture with
its ancient myths. Shown here as a composite, the
piece features the poetry of Wang Ping, calligraphy
by Gong Fagen and appearances by Maggie
Cheung and Zhao Tao. (UK 2010, 50 min)
[ AWARDS & TRIBUTES ]
KANBAR AWARD
David Thomson has been called “probably the
greatest living film critic and historian” and “the
greatest living writer on the movies.” He is the
author of The New Biographical Dictionary of Film,
which topped Sight & Sound’s 2010 poll of
international critics and writers as the best film
book of all time, as well as more than 20 works of
both fiction and nonfiction, including Moments that
Made the Movies; The Big Screen: The Story of the
Movies; Showman: The Life of David O. Selznick;
Rosebud: The Story of Orson Welles; The Whole
Equation: A History of Hollywood; “Have You Seen
. . . ?”: A Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films;
Suspects; and Warren Beatty and Desert Eyes: A
Life and a Story. He has contributed regularly to the
Independent, the London Guardian, Film Comment
and the New Republic and wrote and delivered the
BBC radio series Life at 24 Frames a Second.
The Lady Eve
Preston Sturges
A handsome but stupid heir and a delectable
con artist enjoy a shipboard romance until he
drops her when he learns she’s a grifter, setting
the stage for comic confrontation when she
reappears in his hometown in another guise.
The phenomenal Preston Sturges elicits brilliant
performances from a cast headed by Henry
Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck in this hilarious
screwball classic. (USA 1941, 94 min)

Academy
Award
nominee, K.K.
Barrett engages
in a wide-ranging
conversation covering his
acclaimed career in production design on
such films as Her (2013), Where the Wild
Things Are (2009), I Huckabees (2004) and
Lost in Translation (2003). Barrett’s wildly
inventive approach to Spike Jonze’s surreal
Being John Malkovich (1999) introduced his
style to moviegoers. He’s worked on all of
Jonze’s subsequent films and has
collaborated with Sofia Coppola, Michel
Gondry and David O. Russell, where he has
created the visual styles of period pieces,
puppet animatronics, quasi-sci-fi and
understated dramas. Barrett, a painter,
sculptor and musician (he is drummer of
synthpunk band the Screamers), has also
designed numerous iconic music videos,
including Smashing Pumpkin’s “Tonight,
Tonight” and Beck’s “The New Pollution.”
He will be engaged by Derek Fagerstrom
(managing editor Zoetrope: All-Story and
co-creative director Pop-Up Magazine),
where they will informally wrangle over film
art, creative processes, inspirations and
favorite moments in production design.
Stand Up Planet grew out of comic Hasan
Minhaj’s recognition of several facts: “The
world is full of struggle. Comedy comes
from adversity. This must be one hilarious
planet.” So, Minhaj embarks on a global
journey to meet a new generation of
comic rebels changing the world one joke
at a time. He visits two of the world’s
harshest places—Mumbai, India and the
neighborhoods of Johannesburg, South
Africa—connecting with their burgeoning,
thriving comedy scenes. Minhaj investigates
how humor might function as a critical
force, taking on some of our toughest
global issues such as racism, sexism,
health crises and economic disparities.
Minhaj and local favorite Nato Green
precede the Festival’s presentation of Stand
Up Planet with live, politically minded
comedy sets. Minhaj, who’s appeared on
MTV’s Failosophy, Arrested Development
and Chelsea Lately and has his own
YouTube series The Truth with Hasan
Minhaj, is the perfect host for Stand Up
Planet. He’s a genuinely curious and
generous man who wants to be in on jokes
the world over. Nato Green, creator of Iron
Comic, is currently in the group The
Business. His commentaries have appeared
in the Huffington Post and San Francisco
Bay Guardian. He wrote for Totally Biased
with W. Kamau Bell and toured with Bell and
Janine Brito as Laughter Against the Machine.
Reaching back into her musical catalog, Thao
Nguyen and her band the Get Down Stay Down
will play live, accompanying classic,
strange and funny films from the
silent era, including: Charles
Chaplin’s anarchic The
Pawnshop, Robert Florey
and Slavko Vorkapich’s
groundbreaking The
Life and Death of 9413:
A Hollywood Extra,
alchemical animation
by Harry Smith and
classic newsreels. The
evening also features
original short videos that
Nguyen made in collaboration
with filmmaker Lauren Tabak, including one
created especially for this event. As anyone who
has had the pleasure of seeing the Get Down
Stay Down live knows, Nguyen is a force of
nature, a ferocious guitarist with the wild and
beautiful voice of an angry angel. After taking a
break from music to focus on her relationship to
her community, a hiatus during which she
became a member of the advocacy group the
California Coalition of Women Prisoners,
Nguyen roared back with We The Common. The
2013 album bore the fruit of an artistically and
personally transformative year with its incisive
songwriting, diverse musical styles and strong
social messaging. In recordings and on stage
her juggernaut-like performances speak to
resiliency, hope and infectious, catalytic energy.
This promises to be a special night, as she and
the band perform live to a program of films for
the very first time.

San Francisco’s beloved nonfiction
storytelling series returns to the Festival
for a special night of film industry–themed
stories. The rules are deceptively simple.
Tell a true 10-minute tale to an audience of
strangers as if you’re speaking with a good
friend. The results vary wildly, but are
uniformly unforgettable. Arline Klatte and
Beth Lisick, the show’s cofounders and
hosts, move the night along with charm
and wit. The night showcases six
storytellers, each accompanied video. As
of press time, the lineup of participants
features beloved members of the film
production scene in San Francisco. Sara
Dosa is producer on numerous films
including Inequality for All (SFIFF 2013).
Her debut feature length documentary,
The Last Season, receives its world
premiere at the Festival on Friday, April 25.
Michael Jacobs is director of Festival short
The High Five and documentary feature An
Audience of One (SFIFF 2007). Xandra
Castleton and David Munro are co-creators
of Stand Up Planet, also screening in the
Festival. All give us their take on the
wonderful, trying, funny and frustrating
world of filmmaking. Visit festival.sffs.org
for updates on storytellers at this informal
bean-spilling session.
Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic
Fields) returns with a new
score to accompany Tod
Browning’s (Freaks,
Dracula) classic The
Unknown starring Lon
Chaney and Joan Crawford.
Alonzo (Chaney) an ostensibly
armless circus performer, can
do anything with his feet that
most do with their hands! But he
carries a terrible secret. Not only
does Alonzo possess hands, he uses them
to strangle people. Therefore, although
police know their murderer has an extra
thumb, they fail to question Alonzo, whom
they believe doesn’t have any thumbs, let
alone three. When Alonzo falls for fellow
carny Nanon (Crawford) and realizes
potential intimacy between them might
reveal his hands and thumbs, he is faced
with a horrible decision. Those who attended
Merritt’s wonderful performance
accompanying the strange silent film
adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues
Under the Sea (2010) might remember he
hinted at playing live with a trio of films over
the years at SFIFF. How did we become the
lucky ones? Perhaps it’s the Festival’s
acronym—SFIFF. Merritt, whose band the
6ths is named for the most difficult word to
pronounce in English has an affinity for the
literally unspeakable. The 6ths two album
titles, Hyacinths and Thistles and Wasps
Nests, present equally vexing pronunciation
conundrums, making uttering “SFIFF” seem
practically possible.

New Voices in Latin American Cinema
A celebration of the passion and innovation of Bay
Area filmmaking, Cinema by the Bay features
exceptional new work by local artists and provides a
window into Bay Area film culture and practice at its
best. This program section includes features,
shorts, narratives and documentaries from
well-known and emerging local talent.
Supported by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Festival’s World Cinema Spotlight calls
attention to a current trend in international filmmaking, bringing to light hot topics, reinvigorated genres,
underappreciated filmmakers and national cinemas.
It’s been more than 10 years since Amores Perros (2000) and the first wave of New Argentine Cinema.
While it’s too soon, perhaps, to classify the titles in the Festival’s World Cinema Spotlight as a “next wave” or
“new wave,” it is very apparent that there is a lot of cinematic magic happening south of the border. Strong
new voices continue to surface from Argentina and Mexico and are presented here alongside assured and
unique offerings from emerging filmmakers from countries less often represented on screen: Uruguay,
Venezuela and Costa Rica (appearing in the program for the first time in the Festival’s 57-year history).

Abuse of Weakness
Agnès Varda: From Here to There
Catherine Breillat
After a stroke that leaves the left side of her
body immobile, a film director named Maud
strikes up a fraught relationship with a swindler
who takes advantage of her fragile state. SFIFF
favorite Catherine Breillat has teamed up for the
very first time with the radiant Isabelle Huppert
to tell this extremely personal story of power
games and manipulation. (France/Belgium/
Germany 2013, 104 min)
Agnès Varda
Armed with her inimitable insight and ability to
find beauty where one least expects it, director
Agnès Varda travels to various far-flung locales,
interviewing artists, filmmakers and friends, in this
puckish and profound five-part miniseries originally
made for French television. (France 2011, 225 min)

All About the Feathers
Neto Villalobos
Neto Villalobos’s debut feature All About the
Feathers details the unconventional relationship
between an impoverished security guard and the
newly acquired fighting cock that he struggles to
care for. Anchored by the stellar performances
of a mostly non-professional cast, this quixotic
Costa Rican comedy is both slyly absurdist and
quietly observational. (Costa Rica 2013, 85 min)

Bob Fosse
Roy Scheider stands in for writer/director Bob
Fosse in Fosse's dazzling, self-lacerating and
clearly autobiographical musical, a Best Picture
nominee about a celebrated choreographer/
director who fantasizes about his mortality as he
juggles his many women, the edit of a movie and
rehearsals for a new stage production. Restored
by Twentieth Century Fox in collaboration with The
Film Foundation. (USA 1979, 123 min)
Claudia Sainte-Luce
Set in Guadalajara, The Amazing Catfish
follows the quiet transformation of a solitary
young woman informally adopted and absorbed
into a rambunctious matriarchy in a state
of crisis. Filmed by Claire Denis’ long-time
cinematographer, Agnès Godard, Claudia SainteLuce’s debut feature, based loosely on events
from her own life, blends a wry and moving
naturalism with moments of inspired comedy.
(Mexico 2013, 89 min)
Peter Ho-sun Chan
In Peter Chan's clever crowd-pleaser, three
college buddies become caught up in the thrall
of China's budding entrepreneurial spirit.
Abandoning dreams of stateside success in favor
of establishing an empire at home, they yearn
to beat America at its own rags-to-riches game,
only to discover that this also means weathering
personal and professional fallout from such a
meteoric rise. (Hong Kong/China 2013, 110 min)

Bad Hair
Bauyr (Little Brother)
Sam Cullman, Jennifer Grausman, Mark Becker
What makes a masterpiece? This documentary
examines the curious life of one of the most
prolific art forgers in the United States, who—
under the guise of philanthropy—deceived
museums across the country with his
ingenuously crafted counterfeits for decades.
(USA 2013, 87 min)
Mariana Rondón
A 10-year-old boy's desire to straighten his
kinky hair causes outsized conflict with his
unemployed, harassed single mother in Mariana
Rondon's Caracas-set drama. Unexpected issues
related to Venezuela’s volatile economic situation
and the young boy’s incipient homosexuality form
the core of this finely acted, deceptively smallscaled story. (Venezuela/Peru 2013, 93 min)
Seric Aprymov
Eight-year-old Yerkin is an immensely
resourceful third grader who proudly takes care
of himself. He lives in Bulak, a small village
on the steppes of Kazakhstan, where his keen
observations are sometimes humorous and
always honest. Director Seric Aprymov skillfully
weaves a complex and slyly humorous story of
good and bad brothers into the simple rhythms of
a young boy’s life. (Kazakhstan 2013, 97 min)

In riveting fashion, The British costume drama
is married to issues of social justice in this
adaptation of a true story. Dido Elizabeth Belle,
a mixed-race young woman, takes her place in
18th century society, in the shadow of her great
uncle, a British Earl, and her enslaved Caribbean
mother. (UK 2013, 105 min)
Levan Koguashvili
Single and 40, Sandro has zero prospects for
finding true love. Fate lends a hand when he
runs into a hairdresser, but there’s a catch: Her
husband is getting out of prison the next day.
For those new to the Georgian New Wave, this
low-key, comic gem is a wonderful introduction.

Zeynep Dadak, Merve Kayan
In this low-key, loosely plotted coming-of-age tale,
a Turkish teenage girl wrestles with mood swings,
unfocused restlessness, familial responsibilities,
shifting friendships and romantic complications

BURT’S BUZZ
Alex van Warmerdam
After being flushed out of his subterranean
forest hovel by a hatchet-wielding priest, the
scruffy Borgman knocks on the door of a wellheeled couple and requests the use of their
bath. He soon worms his way into their home,
hatching a bizarre plot to upend their lives
that involves complex psychological warfare
and an alarmingly large number of corpses.
(Netherlands 2013,113 min)
Richard Linklater
Filming over the course of 12 years, Linklater
and his cast depict a young man’s journey from a
6-year-old boy to 18-year-old college freshman.
The resulting film “has no precedent” according
to the Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy.
“Never has the long arc of the journey from
childhood to college been portrayed as cohesively
and convincingly as Richard Linklater has done.”
(USA 2014, 162 min)

Child of God
Chinese Puzzle
Lorena Parlee, Richard Ray Perez
In 1988, labor organizer Cesar Chavez began
a 36-day water-only fast to protest the use
of pesticides that led farm workers and their
children to develop cancer at record rates. With
unparalleled access, Chavez's former press
secretary Lorena Parlee and co-director Richard
Ray Perez construct a portrait of the leader and a
life devoted to the people. (USA 2013,100 min)
James Franco
A backwoods-dwelling pariah in 1960s Tennessee
stumbles upon a pair of dead lovers and becomes
romantically obsessed with the woman’s corpse,
spiriting her body away to his squalid abode.
James Franco’s latest directorial effort is a
seething, snarling beast and an adaptation of a
Cormac McCarthy short story that is, by turn,
bleakly funny and deeply harrowing. (USA
2013, 104 min)
Cédric Klapisch
Picking up many of his characters 10 years
after The Spanish Apartment (SFIFF 2003) and
relocating them to the Big Apple, director Cédric
Klapisch offers a delightfully multicultural look
at the challenges and complications of romantic
commitment and parenting when one still hasn’t
determined what being an adult really means.

Coast of Death
Fernando Eimbcke
A doting mother and her lethargic 15-year-old
son pass away the idle hours of the off season
at an empty Mexican resort hotel, luxuriating
in their laziness until an odd and taciturn girl
arrives and attracts the boy’s attention. Though
theirs may be the least verbal romance in cinema
history, director Fernando Eimbcke’s delightful
restraint brings forth an intimacy, acuity and
comic release that few films can match. (Mexico
2013, 82 min)
Lois Patiño
From the first entrancing images of trees being
cut down in a fog-filled forest to the later blues
of sky and ocean fusing to erase the horizon, the
always static frames of this documentary offer
a meditative and prismatic view of Spain's much
storied and dangerous "Coast of Death.” (Spain
2013, 81 min)
James Byrkit
Four couples gather for a dinner party on a night
that coincides with a comet passing overhead.
Repercussions straight out of The Twilight Zone
ensue as relationships begin to shift amid the
chaos. Coherence soon takes a turn for the
delightfully weird and brain-busting—resulting in
one of the best low-budget sci-fi films in years.

Justin Simien reinvigorates the campus comedy
with his sharply written satire about race and
identity. Following a group of students at a
fictional Ivy League university, his film tackles
taboo topics with finesse and verve, and earned
a Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at
the Sundance Film Festival. (USA 2014,100 min)
Zeresenay Berhane Mehari
In a contemporary Ethiopian village, a
14-year-old girl is abducted from school. Her
attempt to free herself from a future of forced
marriage sets off a legal firestorm in this
powerful drama inspired by a true story that pits
the law against an entrenched set of community
beliefs. (Ethiopia 2014, 96 min)
Allison Berg, Frank Keraudren
John Wojtowicz, whose ill-fated 1972 robbery of a
Brooklyn bank to pay for his transgender bride's
sex-change operation inspired Sidney Lumet's
1975 classic Dog Day Afternoon, recalls both the
heist and his years as a gay rights activist in an

Richard Ayoade
Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg) is a white-collar
drone stuck in a Kafkaesque world of perpetual
humiliation. Enter James Simon (also Eisenberg):
a Type-A doppelgänger who offers to woo Simon’s
dream girl (Mia Wasikowska) for a price. As
writer/director Richard Ayoade’s sophomore
movie proves, however, appearances are never
what they seem. (UK 2013, 93 min)
Yossi Aviram
Delving into issues of identity and aging, this
nuanced and touching relationship drama
portrays the personal crises faced by an aging
gay cop in France and a younger Israeli man
who is found on the beach, mute and without any
identification. (France/Israel 2013, 87 min)
Robin Campillo
In this erotically charged nail-biter, director
Robin Campillo takes the audience on an
unexpected ride when Daniel, a dapper,
50-something Parisian businessman, coyly
cruises the Gare du Nord and awkwardly
propositions an eastern European immigrant
hustler. With this single act, their lives begin
to unravel and intertwine in surprising ways.

Journalist Katie Couric produced and narrated
this documentary focusing on America’s obesity

big questions regarding the food industry and
shows how its influence has come to determine
America’s nutritional choices. Her palpable anger
at the expanded waistlines and compromised
health of today’s America is a powerful indictment
of our shadowy food industry. (USA 2014, 90 min)

Heaven Adores You
Emir Baigazin
Part Lord of the Flies riff and part ticking-timebomb character study, the debut feature from
Kazakh filmmaker Emir Baigazin watches as a
high-school gangster and a disturbed misfit kid
become entwined in a plot for revenge. Welcome
to a world of campus pecking orders, underage
predators and prey that fights back. (Kazakhstan/
Germany/France 2013, 114 min)
Nickolas Rossi
Brilliant, beloved indie rock singer-songwriter
Elliott Smith—whose Academy Award–nominated
“Miss Misery” from the Good Will Hunting
soundtrack earned him unexpected fame, and
who died tragically in 2003 at age 34—is fondly
remembered by friends, family and fellow
musicians in this elegiac documentary, at once a
testament to Smith’s boundless talent and music’s
ability to transcend loss. (USA 2014, 96 min)
Kat Candler
A struggling father copes with the loss of his wife
while blind to the emotional toll her death and
his frequent absences have taken on his sons—a
motocross-riding teenager and his brother,
a sensitive pre-adolescent boy. Outstanding
performances from Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul
and young Josh Wiggins make the story all the
more heartbreaking. (USA 2014, 93 min)

History of Fear
If You Don’t, I Will
Impossible Light
Benjamín Naishtat
Are strange occurrences in an affluent Buenos
Aires suburb evidence that the skittish residents
are actually being targeted? Paranoia runs rampant
in this accomplished first feature, instilling a
disorienting sense of dread in the viewer. The
filmmaker foregoes ready explanations in favor of
foreboding suggestions in a film that is sprawling
both in scope and implications but precise and
exacting in its execution. (Argentina/France/
Germany/Uruguay/Qatar 2014, 79 min)
Sophie Fillières
The extraordinary Emmanuelle Devos and
Mathieu Amalric give fascinating, just-off-center
performances as a longtime couple who’ve fallen
awkwardly out of rhythm and possibly out of love. A
hike in the forest leads to a fork in the road in this
quietly resonant romance-on-the-rocks strewn with
droll one-liners. (France 2013,102 min)
Jeremy Ambers
In this behind-the-scenes look at the creation of
the legendary Bay Lights project, director Jeremy
Ambers offers a close-up view—from inception
to execution—of the project that transformed the
Bay Bridge into the internationally renowned art
installation that currently illuminates the San
Francisco skyline. (USA 2014, 71 min)

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter
The Lady Eve
Noh Young-seok
Against a backdrop of politics and paranoia comes
this humorous and suspenseful story of a blocked
Korean screenwriter holing up in a remote cabin
to finish his latest script. As the young scribe
attempts to work, he is beset by a variety of
distressing interruptions, including the discovery
of a dead body. (South Korea 2013, 99 min)
David Zellner
Surly Tokyo loner Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi) has a
mission: Recovering loot buried somewhere in
the snowbound countryside outside Fargo, North
Dakota. No matter that this treasure may exist
only in the Coen brothers' classic movie—it’s
real to her. Austin's deliciously quirky Zellner
brothers return to SFIFF with a trans-Pacific
road trip of droll minimalist hilarity and ravishing
widescreen enchantment. (USA 2014, 105 min)
Preston Sturges
A handsome but stupid heir and a delectable
con artist enjoy a shipboard romance until he
drops her when he learns she’s a grifter, setting
the stage for comic confrontation when she
reappears in his hometown in another guise.
The phenomenal Preston Sturges elicits brilliant
performances from a cast headed by Henry
Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck in this hilarious
screwball classic. (USA 1941, 94 min)

The Last Season
Last Weekend
Little Accidents
Sara Dosa
Every September, over 200 seasonal workers,
most of them Cambodian, Lao, Hmong, Mien and
Thai, descend upon the tiny town of Chemult,
Oregon, to search the woods for the rare
Matsutake, a fungus highly prized in Japan.
This documentary examines the bond between
two of these hunters, an elderly Vietnam vet
and a survivor of the Khmer Rouge, during one
unusually hard season. (USA 2014, 78 min)
Tom Dolby, Tom Williams
Patricia Clarkson gives a spirited performance
as an aging matriarch who wants her family and
friends to gather one last time for a fond farewell
to the magnificent Lake Tahoe manor she intends
to sell. But comically, her plans quickly crumble
into chaos, sparking a moving, profound and
private remembrance. (USA 2013, 94 min)
Sara Colangelo
In a West Virginia coal-mining town, the
unthinkable has happened: Ten men have lost
their lives in a mining accident, leaving the
community in shambles as it tries to make sense
of the disaster. Featuring standout performances
from Elizabeth Banks and rising stars Boyd
Holbrook and Jacob Lofland, Little Accidents
weaves an atmospheric, everything-is-connected
narrative about bonds forged from indescribable
loss. (USA 2014,105 min)

The patient cameras of Harvard's Sensory
Ethnography Lab (Sweetgrass, Leviathan) return
in Manakamana, Stephanie Spray and Pacho
Velez's intimate record of an isolated Nepalese
pilgrimage site and the cable car journey that
brings adherents, travelers and many others to
the shrine's lofty mountain location. (USA/Nepal
2013,120 min)
Lino Brocka
Among cinema’s greatest humanists, Filipino
director Lino Brocka made this masterpiece tale
of displaced youth and corruption in the teeth of
Ferdinand Marcos’s brutal dictatorship. Restored in
2013 by the World Cinema Foundation and the Film
Development Council of the Philippines at Cineteca
di Bologna/L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in
association with LVN, Cinema Artists Philippines and
Mike de Leon. (Philippines 1975, 124 min)
Josef Wladyka
A reluctant smuggler and his eager neophyte
brother drag a massive load of narcotics up
the coast of Colombia, posing as fishermen.
Paramilitary, guerrillas and hardscrabble
desperation suffuse every inch of the jungle
and waters that surround them, as they seek
to escape the slums of Buenaventura. (USA/

Mohammad Rasoulof
Writer-director Mohammad Rasoulof has
rooted his remarkable career in a wide-ranging
critique of censorship and authoritarian rule in
his native Iran. Here, the filmmaker extends his
uncompromising and diverse body of work with

couture success at Dior, revolutionizes fashion
when he strikes out on his own and falls in love
with long-term partner Pierre Bergé, but also
battles personal demons that color his business
and his relationship. (France 2013,105 min)

White Shadow
Noaz Deshe
Inspired by news reports of the ongoing perils
faced by albinos in Tanzania, Noaz Deshe’s first
feature film, White Shadow, depicts a fractured
and uneasy world, where superstition and rule of
law collide. An albino youth, Alias, must learn to
navigate through a culture not just unsympathetic
to his condition, but actively violent towards it.

department empowers filmmakers of all levels, taking projects from conception to completion and beyond through development and fiscal sponsorship services,
major grants, the FilmHouse residency program and a range of networking events throughout the year.
GRANTS AND PROGRAM
FILMHOUSE
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
The Film Society awards filmmaking grants to
incubate and support innovative and exceptional
films. The total amount of money to be awarded in
2014 will exceed $700,000. Grants include the
SFFS/KRF Filmmaking Grant, the Hearst
Screenwriting Grant, Doc Film Fund and Djerassi/
SFFS Screenwriting Fellowship.
Films supported include award winning narrative
feature films, Beasts of the Southern Wild,
Fruitvale Station and Short Term 12, and
documentaries, Cutie And the Boxer and American
Promise amongst others.
The San Francisco Film Society’s FilmHouse has
4,800 spacious square feet of office space located in
the bustling Fillmore District. The FilmHouse
residency program offers free office space to
filmmakers in various stages of production where
they can share talents and resources with their

community-building events, FilmHouse is designed
to strengthen resident filmmakers› skill sets as a
way of contributing directly to the progress of their
ongoing film projects. The Film Society is dedicated in its support of
emerging and established filmmakers. Through our
long running and successful project development
program, Film Society provides fiscal sponsorship
and one-on-one consultation services designed to
help filmmakers step-by-step through the process
of getting their film funded, made and seen.

ABOUT SFFS EDUCATION
The Film Society’s deep commitment to education through film touches the lives of more than 10,000 Bay Area students and teachers at the K-12 and
college level every year. Our array of year-round in-school and out-of-school youth programs provide film literacy opportunities to Bay Area students
through screenings, filmmaker classroom visits, artist residencies, youth filmmaking camp, teacher trainings and curriculum resources. For college
students, we offer a series of creative, educational, social and professional opportunities for film students to help them transition from the academic arena
to the professional world. SFFS Education recognizes the inherent value of film as a dynamic teaching tool and is dedicated to providing access to media arts
education to underserved communities.
SCHOOLS AT THE FESTIVAL
FilmEd.
COLLEGE DAYS
The annual Schools at the Festival (SATF) program
introduces students ages 6 to 18 to international
film and the art of filmmaking while promoting
media literacy, deepening insights into other
cultures, enhancing foreign language aptitude,
developing critical thinking skills and inspiring a
lifelong appreciation of cinema.
The latest initiative in the Film Society’s ongoing
efforts to promote media literacy and bring
cinema into the classroom is a new online space
called FilmEd., where artists and educators can
access resources for media education. Designed
as a free Open Educational Resource accessible
to all, FilmEd. is both an online community and a
powerful toolkit that includes a robust media
viewing and media making curriculum guide, a
lesson exchange, a youth media gallery and
more. At FilmEd., teachers who are interested in
integrating film and media into their curriculum
and filmmakers who are looking to develop
educational content and audiences for their films
can now connect, collaborate and share ideas
and resources.
This three-day film series is offered exclusively to
Bay Area college and university students during the
second weekend of SFIFF57. The program consists
of five Festival films, curated specifically for a
college film student audience who are new to the
Festival, and includes post-screening Q&As with
visiting filmmakers and a guest lecturer. San
Francisco State University currently offers a
one-credit course dedicated to this program in
partnership with the Film Society.
Find out more at filmed.sffs.org and join the
FilmEd. community.
SFFS Colleges & Universities Program Sponsor
Throughout SFIFF57, elementary, middle and high
school classes from across the Bay Area will attend
weekday matinees of specially curated Festival film
programs at subsidized ticket prices, and dozens of
filmmaker guests from around the world will visit
local classrooms to meet and discuss their films with
students in smaller classroom settings. Most films
are supplemented by viewing guides created by SFFS
Education to help teachers integrate the films into
their curriculum. Students will also have the
opportunity to enter the Nellie Wong Magic of Movies
Education Fund Essay Contest to compete for cash
prizes. The complete list of feature films,
documentaries and shorts programs selected for this
year’s SATF program can be found at festival.sffs.org.
