SAINT BONAVENTURE CATHOLIC PARISH Love your enemies
SAINT BONAVENTURE CATHOLIC PARISH Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 23, 2014 Love your enemies Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page two PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In today’s First Reading from the Book of Leviticus, the Lord says to Moses, “Speak to the whole Israelite community and tell them: Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy.” (Leviticus 19:2) The Lord calls, not only the Israelites, but all of us to holiness. The Lord wants us to turn away from sin. The Lord says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18) The Second Reading builds on this as St. Paul says, “you are the temple of God” and “the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (1 Corinthians 3:16) In today’s Gospel according to Matthew, we continue to reflect on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The Lord says, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:38-48) Jesus proclaimed this powerful message not just with words but with his life. Every time we look upon a Crucifix we see what Jesus did for us. His saving death upon the Cross shows us that he loves even his enemies, even those who killed him. So the next time you’ve been deeply hurt by someone, don’t lash out in anger, instead fix your gaze upon the Cross. It would also be good to bring this hurt to Mass and look upon Christ in the Holy Eucharist: “Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.” COLLECTION for the Church in Latin America/Eastern Europe February 22-23 Each year countless Catholics living in countries once dominated by the Soviet regime are assisted in rebuilding their faith communities through this collection. Grants are given for such needs as mission outreach to rural villages, homes for abandoned children, and centers to provide for the physical and spiritual welfare of thousands suffering with alcohol addiction — a remnant of the hopelessness fostered by generations of communist oppression. Your gift will also fund catechesis, youth ministry programs, and seminarian education in Latin America and the Caribbean. One participant in catechetical training, Andrea, said that the experience was informative and enriching — the catechists were able to meet each other and share their diverse experiences. The support you give today will fund formation programs and provide opportunities for years to come. PASTORAL SERVICES APPEAL Kick-off Weekend February 22-23 A s an extension of our parish membership, we are also a member of the Diocese of Orange. This dual Catholic citizenship makes you an integral part of all diocesan activities as we come together in support of Catholic Education, charitable services for the needy and the sacramental life of our Church through clergy formation and support and so much more. Every household is encouraged to show that they are Proud to be Catholic by supporting the work of our Church and participating in this appeal. No gift is too great or too small. Once we have met the goal for our parish's share for diocesan services, your donations will be returned to our parish for church renovations. RECYCLE February 22-23 Bring your newspapers, aluminum cans, CRV glass and plastic bottles (NO caps) to the bin in the parking lot. Recycling opens Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. Please do not leave recyclable items when the bin is not present. Proceeds benefit our sister parish in Honduras. Page four February 23, 2014 RESPECT LIFE, JUSTICE and PEACE CRS Rice Bowl Solidarity with the Poor in Lent We are drawing near to Lent, when Christians are called to prayer, fasting and almsgiving in union with Jesus who fasted and prayed for 40 days in the desert and conquered temptations (Matthew 4) before beginning His public ministry. This Lent, the St. Bonaventure community is invited to journey and grow in solidarity with our less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world, by participating in Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl program. By taking part in this program, we can learn about the lives of people in far-away countries, about some of the successful efforts to address the local issues impacting poor people, and about the help they receive to improve their lives through CRS using money provided by U.S. Catholics. CRS Rice Bowl will help bring Lent to life for us. Daily suggestions will help us enrich our Lenten journey and experience living in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable around the world. We will pray to deepen our relationship with God and reflect on what type of person we are called to be. We will fast to remove the things that can come between us and God, and to remember those without enough to eat. We will give alms, honoring Jesus’ call to serve those in need. It will be a great journey — please join us! More info next week … SPECIAL PRO-LIFE EVENT Friday, February 28 St. Hedwig Church Pro-life Mass at 6:00 p.m. Speaker Program from 7:00–9:00 p.m. • Fr. February 23, 2014 Page five St. Bonaventure Catholic Church Commonly Asked Questions and Answers on Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) What is Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT)? EFT is a way of giving your Sunday offerings and other donations to St. Bonaventure Church through automatic deductions from your checking or savings account. How does it benefit me or the Church? Giving by EFT frees you from writing Sunday offering and other checks. EFT offers parishioners an easy, systematic means of supporting the ministries of the Church while reducing the risk of checks being lost or misplaced. How secure is EFT giving? It is very secure. No personal information is asked for on the authorization form, and our EFT processing company, VANCO Services, will not have access to such things as account balances and other personal information maintained by your bank, credit union or other financial institutions. Hence, no identity theft is possible. How much will it cost me? This service is free to you. What happens if I change bank accounts? A new authorization form will be given to you to fill out. How about if I want to change the amount of my offering? Again, you will simply complete a new authorization form. Can I change, cancel or stop contributions at any time? Yes. If you want to discontinue your electronic giving, inform the parish center and we’ll take it from there. If I have more questions on EFT, whom should I contact? Nancy Cesar, our parish business manager. Her phone number is 846-2447. Legion of Mary • encourage our youth to consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life through prayer and personal commitment. • support through prayer seminarians and novices from our parish who are in training in their respective vocations. • help with receptions to welcome new priests to our parish and say thank you to priests and seminarians who leave us. We encourage attendance at Adoration by displaying reminders around the Church and the large display board that is set up prior to the 7th of the month. We sponsor vocation panels, put up banners promoting vocations and vocation awareness events. We make Vocations prayer cards available for parishioners’ use. We prepare and send vocation materials to the school for their use in the classroom. On a particular day, we arrange for religious communities to set up a table in the parish hall and display their posters and pamphlets that tell about their particular religious community to make parishioners aware of these communities. We focus particularly on World Day for Consecrated Life, World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Night of Prayer for Priests, and Vocations Awareness Week, which this year has been moved to November. We meet the second Thursday of the month in the parish center at 9:15 a.m. MINISTRY OF THE MONTH is brought to you courtesy of Stewardship Ministry. GOD Wants to Give You So Much Through the Eucharist The Season of Lent is a good opportunity to search for deeper spiritual meaning in our Life Journey and to develop our inner spirituality through the Eucharist. As one of many Lenten practices to choose from, the Families of Nazareth Movement is offering a series of reflection topics entitled Eucharistic Love. These reflections, compiled of excerpts from The Gift of Faith book, may help us draw closer to the Lord during this Lent and Paschal Season. You are invited to join one of three groups — one hour per week — to reflect, share and gain insights on how God meets us, is actively present in our daily lives, and how he wants to transform us in the Eucharist. Come as you can to one reflection or all of them. Materials provided. All are welcome! Meetings will start on Thursday, March 6.
