American Airlines is increasing their service
to Southeastern New Mexico by adding
flights west beginning August 25, 2009.
Tom and Linda
Krumland purchased
Roswell Toyota in
1997. Starting with
only 12 employees,
Tom’s vision of “Treat
the customer’s the
way we would want ourselves to
be treated” began to take shape
immediately.
Now, over 12+ years later, Roswell
Toyota employs over 75 dedicated
men and women whom all share
the same vision. Due to the success
of the business, a brand new 40,000
square foot, state-of-the-art facility
was built in 2005 under the belief of
“The Best for the Best.” Krumland
Auto Group employs over 125
people at its four dealerships; three,
of which, are located in Roswell
– Roswell Toyota-Scion, Roswell
Honda and Roswell Hyundai. The
fourth, Carlsbad Imports, brings
the Krumland
philosophy a bit
further south.
One of Toyota’s
primary goals
is to emphasize
the entire ownership experience.
We want to help ensure that our
customers are satisfied not only at
the time of purchase, but as long as
they own their vehicle. Offering top
quality cars and trucks is, of course,
the first step - but only the beginning.
Toyota dealerships strive to match
the quality of our products with the
finest service in the industry.
With its certified technicians that
service all makes and models, many
with 25+ years of Toyota experience,
its professional sales staff and friendly
office team, Roswell Toyota-Scion
is the dealership made for the new
consumer.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Brad Houston
2009-2010
Chamber
President
September is the beginning
of many community activities.
The chamber’s calendar is
filling up rapidly.
The N.M.M.I. cadets are in
school and getting ready for
a busy year. General Grizzle,
the new Superintendent
at the institute, plans to be
very involved in community
activities. Roswell Public
Schools have over 680 more
students that this time last year.
Superintendent Mike Gottlieb
reports that classes are bursting
at the seams. ENMU-Roswell
also reports an increase in
students enrolled.
Dorrie Faubus-McCarty,
the new executive director
of the Roswell Chamber
of Commerce, is working
very diligently to get office
procedures on par with some
new ideas to cut cost of
operations. She has
appointed several
committees
The Roswell Chamber
of Commerce has
started the new fiscal
year with a boom. The
Chamber is excited
that its’ membership
of chamber members. They
are very eager to be more
involved in the operations of
the chamber.
The US census is taken every
ten years. 2010 is the year
of the census. It behooves
everyone to be partners
and help convey to our
community the importance
of participating in this event
and ensure no one is left
uncounted. The census directs
the allocation of billions of
dollars in government funding.
The Leadership Roswell class
of 30 participants, under the
able guidance of Rick Kraft, is
to start on September 18 at the
chamber building. They will be
served a lunch of hamburgers,
hot dogs, and the trimmings.
Some of the chamber
members are volunteering to
do the grilling and help with
the occasion. This is the 27th
year for this program. It has
been a huge success and I
am sure this year will be no
exception.
As you walk by some of the
grocery stores, the aroma of
green chili being roasted will
tickle your taste buds. The
green chili crop looks good this
year. That is good news to the
farming economy.
Please look for notices of
the upcoming Business After
Hours, as well as various
ribbon-cutting events. The
Business After Hours at Roswell
National Bank in August
was outstanding. The next
Business After Hours will be at
Prime Source Mortgage on
September 17 at 5:00 pm. I
hope we will see lots of people
there.
The county fair took place
in July. The New Mexico State
Fair and the Eastern New
Mexico State Fair will be taking
place shortly. Young people
participating learn some
valuable lessons, including
responsibility, citizenship, pride
in what they accomplish,
and the thrill of competition.
The junior livestock sale is
the culmination of many,
many hours of hard work and
determination. Animals have
to be given a regular daily
diet. Exercising the animals
and training them to pose is all
a part of getting the animals
ready for the fair. Leathercraft,
sewing, photography,
scrapbooking, baking and
gardening are a few of the
events that both juniors and
adults can enter at the fair.

The 28th Annual Heritage
Award Dinner is scheduled for
October 6, 2009, 6:15 PM,at
the Convention and Visitor’s
Center.
This year’s recipients, “Sages
of the Southeast” are not only
two of the major role players
of establishing the Historical
Museum and Archives for
Roswell and the Historical
Society, but have made
themselves fixtures in the community due to their constant
efforts to make Roswell and
the surrounding area a better
place to live.
Arthur Robert McQuiddy
was born in Sedalia, Missouri in
1918. After serving as a Naval
aviator during World War II,
he moved to Roswell in 1946
to become the editor of the
Roswell Morning Dispatch.
He was the editor during the
famous 1947 Roswell Incident.
He later became secretary of
the New Mexico Oil and Gas
Association.
Over the past 25 years he
has served as President of
the Chaves County Historical
Society, (now the Historical
Society for Southeast New
Mexico). He has served on the
Boards of the United Way, the
Roswell Symphony, the Roswell Museum and Arts Center, the State of New Mexico
Hunanities Commission and
the New Mexico Rehabilitation Center Foundation.
Later, McQuiddy served as
Director of Conventions and
Visitors Bureau and Economic
Development Specialist for
Roswell through the Chamber
of Commerece.
Elvis E. Fleming, a native
Texan, moved to Roswell in
1969 when he accepted a
position as instructor of history
at Eastern New Mexico University - Roswell where he remained for 28 years. Over the
years, he was promoted to
Assistant Professor, received
the Presidential Award, the
National Institute for Staff and
Organizational Development
Award, and the Kosa Merit
Award twice. Elvis was named
to Who’s Who in the West in
1984. He was the first Roswell
campus retiree to be granted
emeritus status by the ENMU
Board of Regents in 1997.
Since retiring, he has seved
on the board of the Historical Society for Southeast New
Mexico and the New Mexico
Historical Records Advisory
Board. Elvis has been the
chief archivist and organizer
for the Historical Society’s archives since it opened in 1976.
Fleming has written several books and articles about
the history of Southeast New
Mexico receiving awards
for his writings. In 2003, he
was awarded the Gaspar
Perez de Villagra Award by
the Historical Society of New
Mexico in recognition of his
biography of the “Father
of Roswell,” called Captain
Joseph C. Lea: From Confederate Guerrilla to New Mexico
Patriot. The National Cowboy
Symposium and Celebration
awarded Elvis the 2004 American Cowboy Culture Award
in Western History. Elvis is a
true preserver of history.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Roswell Chamber Of
Commerce Members:
By the time you receive this,
I will have been on board for
slightly over two months as your
Executive Director. Allow me
to introduce myself for those
that I have not met. My name
is Dorrie Faubus McCarty. I
am a Roswell Cheerleader.
This is the finest place to live
as far as I am concerned. We
have fabulous weather, great
people, and a giving, loving
community that has been
there for me every step of the
way. First, let me thank those
of you that were so welcoming
with cards, flowers, plants and
well wishes. We have and are
making changes everyday at
your Chamber. I’m sure you will
be proud of these changes.
This is your Chamber of Com-
merce, and you- our members,
are the life blood of the Roswell
Chamber of Commerce. We
have several seminars coming
up to aid our business community in their day to day battles
to make their businesses successful. Your board of Directors is a very energetic group
of business professionals that
give freely of their time to help
me make your Chamber a
place you can be proud to
belong to. Whether you are a
long time member, or a brand
new member, I would like to
thank you for putting your trust
in the Chamber. New committees have been formed,
and they include members of
your board of Directors. They
will come together regularly
to hopefully meet your needs.
I want to urge you to come
by the office, call, or write to
let us know your concerns; or
to give us a thumbs up if you
feel we are moving in the right
direction. The staff is at your
service. Our office manager
has been with the Chamber for
many years. Most of you have
had the opportunity to meet
Glenna Roark at one of the
past Chamber events. Beatriz C. Vidales is our part time
employee who is helping out
in the afternoons, and working
on her degree at ENMU-R. The
newest member of the team,
the one most of you will come
in contact with first either by
phone or when you walk in the
door is Aletha Whitley. Please
call on any of us at any time. I
assure you, we will do our very
best to serve your needs.
Chile-Cheese Festival
Main Street held the sweet
aroma of roasted chile as
MainStreet Roswell hosted the
annual Chile-Cheese Festival
this past weekend.
No matter what your taste,
you were bound to find something of interest (including
several varieties of chile). Arts
and crafts, ristras, family activities, chile roasting and so many
more activities were to be
found - including bus tours to
Leprino Foods!
Graves Farms was on hand with
plenty of colorful ristras.
Vendors had many unique items - as well as fresh
fruits and vegetables - including chile.
The smell of roasted chile filled the aire
at the festival.
Pick your chile (hot or mild) and
they roasted it on the spot.

FAMILIAR FACES WITH A NEW VISION FOR YOUR HOME
Yes, there is a new furniture store in town -- Family Furniture!
Family Furniture, Inc. is owned and operated by local folks with over 93 years combined experience in the
furniture business. We are located at 2001 S. Main Street (the former M Waldrop Furniture location).
Our store was created, established, and specifically designed with the lifestyles and needs of the family in
mind.
Our plan is not to have “Flash in the Pan” clearance sales or “Once in a LifeTime” blowouts, but to offer
savings with honest-to-goodness best prices on furniture, mattresses, and accessories every day –all the time.
We seek out the best values from manufacturers and pass the savings on to you –our customers.
We feature a fully stocked Sleep Gallery with mattresses of all comfort levels and prices… ready to deliver to
your home. Whether you desire an “ultra plush” or an “extra firm” mattress set, we have it! If you’ve been
considering a new mattress purchase, you owe it to yourself to come by and see what all we have available.
Family Furniture, Inc. features a complete line up of Home Office furniture as well as Home Theater
selections with the new flat screen TV and surround sound systems in mind. Casual Dining and Full Dining
Room Suites have not been overlooked. Thanksgiving is just around the corner!
Of course, Family Furniture, Inc. has a full line up of sofas, sectionals, and recliners—all your upholstery
needs. We have great choices in Master Bedroom Suites as well. Children and Youth Furniture holds an
important place at Family Furniture, Inc. We feature several groups with functionality designed to grow with
the needs of your child or youth.
Watch for our grand opening and ribbon cutting. Come see us; we would love to visit with you!

RCLT is currently in the midst of a gifting
campaign to raise funds for the renovation of
their future home at Hobbs and S. Union, the
former Park Twin Cinema. The property was
purchased in 2007 for $300,000. The current
mortgage balance is $91,000 and the architect’s
preliminary drawings are completed and paid
for.
Donors are being sought to sponsor the
naming rights for various components of the new
theater. These range from $150,000 to name
the theater down to $5,000 to name the Office.
See the September 23rd issue of Roswell Daily
Record for a complete list. We need to raise
at least $200,000 of the $500,000 goal to begin
renovations. That is the amount necessary to
make minimum improvements necessary to
obtain a “Certificate of Occupancy”.
With the move to the new theater, RCLT will be
able to improve its service to the community by
expanding the scope and variety of live theater
and entertainment. RCLT will also offer more
training and acting opportunities for the youth of
the area, and will continue to serve as a medium
where interested persons may be involved in live
theater as an avocation.

ROSWELL SINGERS TO
PERFORM AT CARNEGIE HALL
John Fuss, Director
of Music Ministries at
First United Methodist
Church and director of
the ENMU-R Chorale,
has been invited to bring
a choir to perform on
the stage at Carnegie
Hall next summer. The
choir will be made up of
members of the FUMC
and ENMU-R groups plus
additional singers from
Roswell and the Pecos
Valley.
The invitation to sing
at Carnegie Hall was
extended by composer,
Bradley Ellingboe, Director
of Choral Activities at the
University of New Mexico.
He will be conducting
a performance of his
REQUIEM on Monday,
June 14, 2010. Singers
from throughout the
United States will gather
to form a 300-400-voice
choir for the performance
with Mr. Ellingboe.
According to Mr. Fuss,
the choir will spend
many hours in rehearsal
preparing the REQUIEM.
Additionally, the choir
will be busy raising
the needed funds to
underwrite this once-in-alifetime experience.
To commemorate
the evening and the
choir’s trip to Carnegie
Hall, renowned local
artist, Dorothy Peterson,
has done an original
watercolor design for
the program cover. Fifty
signed and numbered
prints of this stunning
artwork will be available
for purchase during
intermission and following
the performance.
The choir greatly
appreciates the generous
and enthusiastic support
of our community and
your attendance at “From
Broadway to Carnegie
Hall,” their first fundraising
effort.
The photos on this
page are from one
of their fundraising
events - an entertaining
show, emceed by Rod
Schumacher and Steve
Wolfe, September
27th at Pearson
Auditorium. Performers
from throughout
Roswell provided a
great afternoon of
entertainment.
If you would like to
donate to their effort
to perform at Carnegie
Hall, please contact First
United Methodist Church
at 622-1881.

This year’s theme:
Expectation + Opportunity =
Full Participation.
This year’s theme for National
Disability Employment Month
captures the vital
role that expectations play in
our successes as individuals
and as a society. We
must ensure that both
people with disabilities and
their employers expect that
they will fully participate in
our workplaces.
Such an expectation alone,
however, is not enough. They
must also have
opportunity. People with
disabilities need access to a
full range of employment
choices to maximize their
talents.

With both the expectation
and opportunity, people with
disabilities will become
full participants in our
economy.
“People with disabilities must
be woven into our work
culture. Already, we benefit
from the incredible array
of talent they bring to our
workplaces. But we must
raise the bar, we must create
the inexorable expectation
that people with disabilities
will
contribute in every way to
our economic successes.
Only by nurturing this
expectation and providing
people with disabilities with
unlimited employment
opportunities, can we all
benefit from their talents.”
