New Year’s Eve
Ball, December
31st, from 8 p.m.
to 1 a.m. This
year’s theme is
“Putting on the Ritz”, featuring Chicago’s
Own Burgie Crandall and the Let’s Dance
Band and other local vocalists. Appetizers
and cocktails will be provided by Pepper’s
Grill and Bar. Dress is cocktail attire. Safe
ride reservations will be available.
Tickets are $25 each, $45 per couple
or $175 per table of 8. Ticket sales begin
on November 11th, Veterans’ Day, at the
Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau, 912

We at the Chamber agree that helping
those less fortunate is very important
and appreciate all the hard work that
volunteers put forth each year for this great
cause. Here at the Chamber we ourselves

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2009-2010
Chamber
President
As we approach the
beginning of a new year,
our society is reeling from an
economic depression. The
state of New Mexico is suffering
from a deficit of millions of
dollars. The legislature will
struggle to balance the
budget. Education is one of
the many things that hang in
the balance.
Our region has felt some of
the economic strain we see in
media reports, but the local
impact has been substantially
less than in other areas of the
country. While the decline in
commodity prices has been
felt drastically in our oil and
gas and agriculture industries,
widespread unemployment
and multiple business closures
have yet to develop. Housing
sales have slowed somewhat,
but there are still new houses
under construction and
potential purchasers looking
to buy. Banks have money to
lend, and Christmas shopping
activity is well under way.
Politically, we have seen
a clear majority vote for a
change in government, both
nationally and within our
state. President Obama has
many challenging matters
to consider. Health reform,
trade and cap, the country’s
economy, and the war in
Afghanistan are some of the
major problems he has to
tackle. Locally we need to let
our thoughts be heard to the
Washington delegation from
New Mexico. FLETC and ILEA
are two important training
facilities in southeastern New
Mexico. We want to do
everything we can to keep
those facilities located here.
Other states would dearly
love to get them in their own
states. Legislative rallies in
Washington, D.C. help to keep
our legislators convinced of
the importance that these
programs have in southeastern
New Mexico.
It is clear that the state
budget crisis will be dominant
in the next legislative session
and the results will be felt
for some time to come. Our
challenge is to look at this time
as an opportunity to improve
ourselves, our relationships, our
businesses, and our community.
Roswell has always risen to
the challenge, and we will do
so again in 2010. Especially
in this season of sharing and
giving, we can strengthen our
family relationships, and we
can enhance our business by
supporting our local businesses.
We can and will make a
positive difference by actively
embracing “CHANGE”.
The Roswell Chamber of
Commerce has gone through
a number of changes. With
the new director Dorrie FaubusMcCarty and a new office
staff, progress is being made
to make the Roswell Chamber
an important part of the city
functions. Novembers Business
After Hours at First American
Bank was a great success with
their Winter Wonderland. First
American Bank, Xcel Energy
and Roswell Regional Hospital
jointly sponsored this wonderful
event and did very well in the
auctioning of the trees, wreaths
and their silent auction. If you
missed the last Business After
Hours be sure to attend the
next one to be held at the
Fairfield Inn on December
17, 2009. January’s Business
After Hours will be at Roswell
Hyundai on January 21, 2010.

Recognition Program
will honor 14 outstanding educators
from throughout Chaves County who
will be chosen through the nomination
and selection process. Sponsored by
Eastern New Mexico Medical Center,
Roswell Regional Hospital and Read &
Stevens, Inc., all nominees, along with
the winners, will be honored Tuesday
evening, February 23, at the Roswell
Convention and Civic Center.
Another of our programs, The
Coaches of Character Recognition
Program, has just chosen its autumn
coaches of the year. Sponsored
by PrimeSource Mortgage and The
Roswell National Bank, it was created
to encourage all high school coaches
in Chaves County to “Pursue Victory
with Honor” and exhibit the six pillars
of character in the classroom, in the
locker room, during practice, and during
competitions throughout the year.

almost to an end. Where did
the time go?
My hopes are that you
all had a safe and happy
Thanksgiving, and took time to
do what the holiday is all about
GIVING THANKS! Speaking
of giving thanks we want to
thank all of you that brought
food to the Chamber for our
food drive. Pat yourselves on
the back for doing your part
to help make Thanksgiving
memorable for those less
fortunate. The Chamber of
Commerce is truly thankful
for this great city we live in. I
continue to be pleasantly
surprised, when times seem the
toughest and the economy
is at a low point, how our
community opens up their
pockets and helps out those in
need.
We are asking for you, our
members input. The Chamber

asking many questions that
will help us to better serve your

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Generations of Learning
Generations of Learning traces its
roots back to 1937 when Sadie Cooper
Vauchelelt opened the first PreK and
Kindergarten in New Mexico. Back then
the children went to school half-day in a
converted barn located at 500 N. Lea.
For 25 years Sadie and her dedicated
teachers taught the children of Roswell
their ABC’s, numbers, music, drama and
every foreign language. In 1962 the
school was moved to The First Christian
Church and Grace George took over as
Director. Grace added many exciting
components to the curriculum including
her famous “Tea Parties” that are still
held every year for the children and their
parents during February. In 1991 Marilyn
Wagner became the third Director and
in 2000 Jeri Key became the Co-Director
and the school continued to expand
and offer additional services. In 2002
the school was moved to two temporary
locations at South Main Church of Christ
and Grace Church. Finally in August 2004
the school opened at their permanent
facility located on 5 acres at 2601 W.
Berrendo. Generations of Learning is now
a year long, full time center for children
ages 6 weeks through 10 years. We
provide many services that were unheard
of in Sadie and Grace’s time; however
we are proud to carry on many of the
traditions that made our school famous.
Generations is a National All Star School,
Nationally Accredited, a New Mexico
PreK site, and a national award holder for
donating the most money in the nation
for a Preschool to St. Jude Children’s
Hospital. We are very proud of our
heritage and are looking forward to more
exciting happenings at our school.
Each month the Chamber of Commerce
will draw a business name or two
from a hat with all current Chamber
Members as the Member of the Month.
Those chosen will be asked to give a
brief description of their business or an
upcoming event that they would like
to let other members know about. This
month we have chosen Generations
of Learning as our first Member of the
Month. Congratulations and we look
forward to other business updates in the
months to come.

Successful Business Tips
The Chamber has started a new section called “Successful
Business Tips” where we will provide businesses like yours tips
to help you effectively improve your work environment. This
month’s tip is about how to attract new customers. If there is a tip

A Business Dies Every 2 Hours
It breaks my heart to go shopping sometimes. There's the "Going out of business sale!", the
pride saving "Lost our lease sale!", and the cardboard headstone "Space for Rent". They are all
a result of the same problem . . . not enough customers.
It's nice when you can open a business and attract new customers the next day. It's great when
a web site guarantees your profitability. But none of those things happen without good planning.
Without a good plan, and the proper execution, businesses die very quickly.
3 RULES TO ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS
1. Let people know you exist - Advertise and market yourself -- don't forget social media. If
people don't know where you are and what you do, they can't buy from you. Advertising and
marketing greatly increases your chances of success.
2. Don't scare the customer - Make the customer feel comfortable with your product or
services. Provide an environment in which they will feel safe. Make them feel good about
spending their money. I walk by stores all the time that are open, but look very dark inside. That
doesn't make me feel like going inside. You can't attract new customers if they are not
comfortable with you.
3. Look the part - Businessmen wear suits. Policemen carry guns. You are reading this article
because we look the part. We effectively display our ability to attract new customers. You can
do the same when you look the part. If you were going to buy tools, you would expect a guy
with a tool belt and a smock to help you out right? After all, he looks like he knows what he's
talking about. What if you went to go buy a power saw and a lady in a clown suit asked if she
could help you? Exactly. Look the part and you can attract new customers without any
problems.
You would be surprised at how many people break these simple rules. I go exploring around my
city and I find little out-of-the-way businesses that I would have never known about before. They
are good businesses with absolutely no exposure. So when I go back a few months later to see
them again, they are out of business. It's very sad. They don't go out of business because they
are bad at business, it's just that no one knew where they were so they never made enough
money to stay open. You can't attract new customers when they don't know you exist.
