Woodbine celebrates 125 years
WOODBINE – Remember when you could buy a big paper bag full of
penny candy at the variety store? Remember when the local hardware store
began selling television sets and it was “standing room only” as residents
gathered to watch TV in the aisles? Remember when you and your friends
walked downtown after school for a 15 cent cheeseburger at the local diner? If
you grew up in a small town, these memories are probably familiar ones.
This year in Woodbine, residents are waltzing down memory lane as the
community of 1,500 celebrates the town’s Sesquicentennial.
In 1866, the Civil War was a fresh and painful memory. Many new settlers
were migrating to the western Iowa border. Some headed to the prairie lands for
religious reasons, others were Civil War veterans spurred by the promise of the
Homestead Act, using their service time in exchange for a patch of promising
farmland. Harrison, Shelby, and Crawford Counties started to fill with people.
Earlier, in 1855, Lorenzo and Anna Butler settled on the Boyer just east of
what is now Woodbine, and ran a grist mill, a post office and stage coach stop,
naming the town after Mrs. Butler’s home in England. The mill naturally drew
people to the area and in 1866 the first town plat was completed. A surveyor set
up his transit on the “natural mound” that is now City Park and drew the first of
three plats.
Special events commemorating the 150th Birthday Party are planned for
Summer 2016, among them a noteworthy Grand Parade during the popular
Woodbine Rodeo Days, July 8 & 9. The Grand Parade will feature entries from
all over the region, ranging from the Omaha Condors Drum Corps to a Model
A Club to a Civil War Band. Merry Brook School House will be open for tours,
too.
August 27 will feature a BBQ & Concert in the Park. On stage will be the 1st
Volunteer Nebraska Civil War Band, Iowa Western Community Band, and the
Woodbine Notables. A Civil War Encampment will take place in the park and
Civil War Relics Display will be featured in the Main Street Station Canopy
Gas Station.
In a 1904 pictorial, Woodbine was called the “Home City” of Harrison
County for its pretty houses, substantial downtown buildings, and ‘…more
churches than saloons.’ In 2012, the downtown was named a Great American
Main Street by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, recognizing the
extensive historic preservation work accomplished in the downtown’s Historic
District.
There have been some rough times.
World Wars, droughts, influenza and polio, The Great Depression, the Farm
Crisis of the 1970’s and 80’s which rocked the Midwest, the advent of the digital
age, and the shrinking of small town populations and school enrollments.
A news article in 1933 stated: ‘Although we are yet passing through a period
of severe depression, we have no doubt that the town will come through it

in good shape. And soon again be
enjoying the prosperity which we
are assured is just around the corner.
We have weathered several periods
of panic …and should look forward
with confidence to coming through
this one in good shape.’
“We all know it’s impossible
to go back in time, but we like to
believe local revitalization efforts
have preserved some of Woodbine’s
essence and character from 1866
to 1966, and through the last fifty
years to 2016,” said Deb Sprecker,
Executive Director of Woodbine
Main Street. “It’s only right we take
time to celebrate and mark the passage
of time. Honoring the past and the
people who poured their energy into
our hometowns is important.”
Remember when Santa appeared
at the movie theater and passed
out treats? Remember going to the
basement of the department store to
buy your annual pair of canvas gym
shoes? Remember when Saturday
night was a social event on Main
Street and the stores would stay open
until 11 pm or later for customers so
they could catch up on all the news? If
you grew up in a small town, it’s good
to pause, remember, and celebrate.

Griswold’s 3 Bee Farms
worth a stop this fall
GRISWOLD – In July of 2009, Mike
and Donna Brahms purchased the
Glen Robin Orchard one mile west of
Griswold. The orchard was originally
started by R. F. Chambers in 1930.
After its 80th anniversary, the orchard
name was changed to 3 Bee Farms to
encompass the changing products
they produce.
3 Bee Farms has 14 varieties of
apples to choose from with apples
ripening in September and October.
Produce from Asparagus to
Zucchini is available in the onsite retail store, The Apple House.
Vegetables are also available at
Farmers Markets. Fresh hydroponic
tomatoes are available starting each
May.
The Apple House has homemade
pies, apple cider, honey, jam and jelly,
dip mixes, soup mixes, bbq sauces,
dressings, salsa and more.
Honey is produced by the resident
honey bees and offered for sale in
various forms along with beeswax
products including beauty products,
candles and more.

Ebeltoft Village arrives
at the Danish Windmill
Harrison Co. Historical Village & Welcome Center
MISSOURI VALLEY – The Harrison County Historical Village & Welcome
Center is 18 acre multi-faceted facility uniquely located on three byways: the
Loess Hills National Scenic Byway, the Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway and
the Western Skies Scenic Byway. Having its start as a museum in 1938, visitors
may take self-guided tours to view more than 10,000 items in the five buildings
located on the village grounds.
The Iowa Welcome Center provides information and assistance to visitors
year-round with over 350 brochures including free Iowa maps and visitor
guides, and a gift shop featuring Iowa souvenirs. Visitors also enjoy free
samples of cherry drink, made and bottled at the facility since the 1930’s.
Other items of interest to guests include a one-mile walking trail through
14 acres of re-established prairie, an elevated handicap accessible observation
deck, an outdoor transportation-themed play space, outdoor interpretive panels
on the three byways and agriculture in Iowa, and a 30-seat indoor auditorium
that shows both a Loess Hills and Lincoln Highway film.
The facility also hosts the Welcome Center Farmers Market on Thursday
afternoons from mid-May to mid-October. The welcome center is open yearround Monday thru Saturday, 9 to 5 pm and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. The village
is open April - November. For additional information, please call 712-642-2114

Preserving the Past ... For the future
ELK HORN – In 1982, at the age
of 82, Richard Storkfelt, a Danish
immigrant, began the construction
of Ebeltoft Village by constructing
a 10-foot tall working windmill in
his backyard in Sharon, MA. In
1985, he built a miniature replica
of his grandmother’s house that
stood in Ebeltoft, Denmark, where
Richard spent much of his childhood
summers. In 1990, he decided to
build a larger, outdoor version of
his grandmother’s house. Once
completed, the house was placed next
to the windmill. The creation of the
house inspired Richard to recreate the
entire village of Ebeltoft. Between
the years of 1990-1997, Richard built
his grandmother’s outhouse, followed
by the town hall, a yellow house and
finally a church (completed when he
was 97 years old).
As Richard produced these 1/8
scale buildings, he also inhabited
the village. The village eventually
consisted of over 50 figures, including
horses, storks, a dog, and a princess.
Three figurines, Perot (the clown),
Columine (ballerina), and Harlequin,
are replicas of porcelain figurines
Richard bought in Denmark. Many of
the carved inhabitants of the village
were based on family members and
friends of Richard’s. He also carved
himself at different stages of his life.
The Ebeltoft Village was gifted to
us by the Museum of Danish America,
whom received the striking folk art
creation from the Fuller Museum of
Art in Brockton, MA in 1999.
The Windmill received a grant
from the Shelby County Community
Foundation to assist with this project.
The Ebeltoft Village is currently
under construction on the Windmill
ground.

FREEDOM ROCK
LOCATED IN EARLING, IOWA
Dedicated July 12, 2013 it is one 42 Iowa Freedom Rocks painted by
Iowa artist, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II. He was inspired by the movie Saving
Private Ryan, as well as, wanting to give Veterans a unique recognition on
Memorial Day.
The project was the idea of Earling’s American Legion Post #615 and
the site includes flags (U.S., Iowa, POW/MIA), benches constructed by
Tremel Nursery with a welcome center under construction with completion
planned for this summer. Memorial bricks and a walkway are also planned.
The boulder’s sides show the American Flag, the American Legion
emblem, former Lt. Col. Paul J. Finken as well as a list of Shelby Co. residents who died, or were POW/MIAs following WWII, St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church and honoring law enforcement, fire and rescue.

Three Art Shows
Society celebrates 51 years
HARLAN - The Shelby County Historical Society sits amidst Potter’s
Park and has grown to encompass four buildings over the last five decades.
The museum complex is highlighted by the historic McIntosh and Leland log cabins built in 1856 and 1857 respectively. These pioneer houses
stood in the northwestern and southwestern portions of the country and help
provide a sense of what the pioneers faced when they first came to settle in
Shelby County during the mid-19th century.
These log cabins will undergo extensive preservation and restoration efforts in the coming months to help ensure that they remain available to visitors for many years to come. Also the museum hopes to offer an in-depth
look into the construction of these cabins, including details about how the
cabins were built and maintained. Once completed, these buildings will
serve as the center for many historic activities from cooking demonstrations
to pioneer experiences.
The Hoskins Pioneer Hall houses many artifacts that detail the prehistoric and early settlement periods of western Iowa, specifically Shelby
County. Visitors can see a 6,000-year-old musk ox skull and Native American artifacts to learn about the inhabitants of this area before the settlers even
arrived. Venture downstairs in this building and see horse-drawn equipment,
blacksmith and cobbler shop displays, a Harlan-manufactured Nelson gas
engine, and much more.
The Prairie Trails Building features a newly-revamped military room,
honoring area residents with hundreds of photographs and personal effects.
Many visitors make use of the Family Genealogical Center. Researchers
can have as many as 15,000 obituaries, funeral cards, and death notices; over
10,000 genealogical tax records; 11,000 probate and guardianship records
dating 1860-1997; and more all at their disposal. Free Wi-Fi and a friendly
staff are waiting to help guests with any research question(s).

stroyed by the 1925 tornado. The “new” building was moved to
Panama in 1961 and it has a rich history, serving as both a oneroom school in the country and later utilized for parochial and public school classes through 2002. Because the school was unused
and sustained water damage, in 2004 the community discussed
donating the school to the volunteer fire department to burn.
In 2005, the Friends of Washington Township #7 was formed
to look at restoring the structure. Three of the charter members attended this school as children. Thirteen gallons of patching plaster

41st Annual Old Time Country & Blue Grass Festival in LeMars
Le Mars - The National Traditional Country Music
Assn’s. 41st Annual Old Time Music, Arts, & Crafts Festival will be held August 29 - Sept. 4, 2015 featuring over
500 musicians on 10 stages at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds and attracts thousands of attendees
Bob Everhart, president of the NTCMA said, “We’ve
been doing this for 41 years and we make it possible for
just about anyone in arts and crafts, flea market, even antiques, to participate in our hugely successful event.”
The NTCMA, who sponsors the Pioneer Exposition, offers space by the square foot for artisans and craftsmen for
the same amount they pay for it. Vendors can set up and
tear down at their own leisure.
“We want to share what we are doing with whoever
wants to participate, so this is an excellent opportunity for
anyone in the arts. We have been quite successful with
items of a pioneer nature, especially quilts, handmade
toys, wooden items and more.”
The festival has become an oasis for traditional performers with 500 participating musicians from around the
world. It’s a celebration of America’s musical heritage and
considered one of the www.ntcma.net

per day (under 18 free) to enjoy America’s great rural music on 10 stages. Awards are given by the Rural Roots Music Commission, and a free ‘Early-Bird’ gospel show and

Each stage has different kinds of acoustic music. The
Gospel stage runs all day with Christian music. The Dobro Stage features that instrument. The Village Stage harbors autoharps, lap dulcimers, psaltrys, playing soft music. There’s the Main stage, a Dance Hall stage, a Contest

Avoca’s Farmall-Land USA
AVOCA - One of the finest tractor collections
in the world is located right here with red dominating the more than 26,000 sq. feet of exhibit space.
Located just off I-80 exit 40, Farmall-Land USA is a must-see for
everyone, not just for tractor enthusiasts. You’ll be amazed at the pristine condition of the equipment, the cleanliness and the sheer scope of
the collection Jerry Mez has put together over his lifetime.
You will see everything from the largest tractor in the collection,
“Big Bertha”, to the smallest bit of memorabilia, all with easy to read
signage explaining the significance and history of the piece.
When you’re ready for a break, you can relax in the “Tractor Widow’s Lounge,” enjoying a terrific doll collection and other displays arranged by Joyce Mez. What might be even more impressive than the
museum itself are the people who volunteer their time to share the
Farmall-Land story with you. Western Iowa hospitality and a wealth

Visitors to Avoca are welcome to tour the East Pottawattamie
Courthouse, located on 203 N. Elm Street in downtown Avoca. This
magnificent, two-story courthouse was built in 1888 to serve the
eastern half of Pottawattamie County. Its exterior brick came from
a local brickyard, and the restored interior architecture and furnishings are typical of that era. Ornate tin ceilings, elaborate hanging
light fixtures, and a monstrous iron safe are just part of the historic
decor.
A majestic, 200 year-old judge’s bench with over-hanging canopy,
which originally came from an old English Castle, occupies an entire wall of the courtroom. Intricate carvings highlight the wooden
structure and impress all who visit the second-floor courtroom.
The Avoca Courthouse still provides offices to several county and
local agencies and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Enjoy Iowa’s Antique City - Walnut
WALNUT - Walnut has always been about ANTIQUES!
During the winter season you will always find 8 to 10
stores open. With the beginning of the warm season that
number swells to over a dozen with the addition of a downtown bakery. Corn Country Antiques has tripled it’s size over
the winter.
Shop owner Dave Bradley offers shoppers a great diversity of antiques. Depression glass, Victorian Furniture pieces,
vintage frames, and just tons and tons of treasures to look
through. On a warm June night it is said that one might faintly hear violin music coming from the Opera House.
Vintage Bulldog shop owners Bob and Marcy Kreeger
might disput that fact although they are housed on the first
floor of Walnut’s Opera House. They feature all things retro
and often play vinyl to entice customers into their shop. T
he ghost story goes that the Opera House once housed
a famous Walnut Personage in the name of Carl Herrmann.
He played the violin (for Kings and Queens in Europe) was a
Magician and died mysteriously within the Opera House.
If Bob and Marcy would just turn down their vinyl recordings we may just hear that lonely violin!

34th Annual Walnut Antique
Show is June 17 - 19, 2016
WALNUT – Walnut is gearing up for it’s annual antique show which
has grown to over 17 blocks outside and the 2 largest indoor halls in
town.
The AMVETS veterans’ organization that promotes and organizes the
show has considered each step of growth and even though many more
dealers offer to set up here each year, they have stopped the growth of the
show and held it to 310 dealers. They concentrate on the quality of the
dealers instead.
With our free admission and free parking, it is so easy for visitors to
come and go throughout the weekend without expense and hassle.
The Fireman’s breakfast, church food stands, American Legion and
AMVETS serve everything from roast pork, spaghetti, brats, hamburgers, scalloped potatoes and ham, home-made ice-cream, funnel cakes and
don’t forget those frozen fruit-bars. See their ad at right.

OAKLAND - A garden area that adjoins the Nishna Heritage Museum
here is ready for visitors with its official opening is August 6. Outdoor
exhibits of farm equipment will be part of the attraction as well.
The garden is a cooperative renewal effort by Oakland area residents.
After a nearby building collapsed in 2011, the Historical Society was
forced to demolish part of their museum and they decided to use the empty
space to honor the agricultural heritage of rural Iowa.
Visitors are invited to sit on one of the benches to enjoy the “Three
Sisters” sculpture, and a 20 x 100’ mural by Amy and Mark Mertes from
Carson who designed the three-dimensional piece to depict the earliest
form of agriculture. The museum is open Monday - Thursday and by appointment.

MAceDONiA’s - Historical Preservation Society spearheaded an effort to install intricate iron railings along the city’s Main Street. Each section tells the story of an event, family or organization with special ties to the
community. In addition to the railings themselves, the sun casts a shadow
on the sidewalk mirroring its significance.
The railings line a street filled with nice surprises. On the south side,
you’ll find the Grist Mill McCready Theatre, where the Grist Mill Fine Arts
Council hosts performances. The theatre once housed a John Deere dealership, and still displays a variety of agricultural items for all to enjoy.
To the east of the theatre stands the Stemple Bird Museum with a collection of over 300 mounted displays.
And to the west you will find The
Back Forty restaurant/bar. The restaurant is intimate enough for a dinner
alone, but has enough room for large
gatherings in the party room.
The north side of the street includes the best of old and new. You’ll
find the Pioneer Trail Museum just
a few steps from the Painted Camel
Gallery with a plethora of art featuring pottery, jewelry, wooden furniture
and woven rugs.
The citizens of Macedonia invite
you to take a few minutes and explore
hidden gems within our community.

AUDUBON
Welcome to Audubon County:
Audubon, Brayton, Exira, Gray, Hamlin, Kimballton
Audubon County Home on the National Historic Registry
AUDUBON COUNTY – Our
old County Home was built in
1890 for indigent persons of
the county. In the 1970s the
Audubon County Historical
Society acquired the house
(and other buildings) to create
a museum. The facility is
collectively called Nathaniel
Hamlin Park.
Early members of the
historical society created a
museum that tells the story
of settlement of the area from
1850 to the present.
The 2-story brick home
has its original floor plan and
1800 sq.ft. of display space
including: large kitchen &
pantry, Victorian parlor and
bedrooms. Other room displays
include quilting & sewing,
military, children’s play room,
schools, churches, collections
(beauty shop), hats & clothing
and the “Audubon”.
The park includes a one room
schoolhouse, barns and antique
farm machinery. That’s not all
– the 10-acre park has live elk,
windmill displays and many
picnic tables. Come and spend
the day!
Location: 1.5 miles south of
Audubon, at Nathaniel Hamlin
Park. To arrange a group tour
call 712-563-2742.

AUDUBON
Welcome to Audubon County:
Audubon, Brayton, Exira, Gray, Hamlin, Kimballton
Take a Walk in Audubon County
AUDUBON COUNTY –
Looking for a place to take
a walk? Maybe take in some
beautiful scenery, or stroll
through a quaint small town;
maybe you’d like to explore
some of Iowa’s history, or
look at some interesting art as
you walk along, then Audubon
County is the perfect place for
you to take a walk.
If it’s art you’re looking for,
jump on the birdwalk trail in
downtown Audubon and, “walk
the walk.” Ceramic tile mosaics,
a bronze statue of John James
Audubon and a mural in the post
office all offer you a glimpse
at the town’s namesake. Brass
sculptures of Hans Christensen
Andersen’s fairy tales, and the
freedom rock are the highlight
of a stroll through Kimballton’s
city park.
On the south side of
Audubon, jump on the T-Bone
trail and hike through the
countryside
of
Audubon
County. While on the trail you
may encounter wildlife, or you
may see a farmer working in
the fields. If you enjoy a longer
walk, the trail will take you
through Hamlin, Exira, and
Brayton to the plow in the oak
tree. Walking and biking fans
can take the trail all the way into
Cass County.
There’s plenty of history
available. plan to walk through
Nathaniel Hamlin Park and
Museum or the Courthouse
Museum in Exira. You may
choose to walk thru one of
the historical churches in the
county. Farm enthusiasts would
enjoy a walk around the elevator
being restored near Ross.
Take in the beauty of nature
when you stroll around the rose
gardens in Gray, or walk around
the lake at Littlefield Park. The
quaint small villages located
in Audubon County give you
the opportunity to search for
treasures in the shops or enjoy
a treat in a local restaurant. The
city parks provide the perfect
place for a rest from all your
walking. Pack a picnic lunch,
relax and enjoy your time in
Audubon County.
So tie up your walking shoes
and contact Audubon County
Tourism. We’d love to help
you “plan your walk.” www.

Museum of Danish America Celebrates
Danish Roots and American Dreams
ELK HORN – The Danish
Immigrant Museum (a nonprofit institution) was founded
in 1983 to preserve the history
of Danish immigration to
America. In 1994 the first phase
building, reminiscent of Danish
architecture was completed,
housing significant artifacts
important to the interpretation
of the Danish immigration
story.
The Museum opened in
June of 1994 as a national
center for the Danish-American
community.
In October 2013 the museum
officially adopted the name
Museum of Danish America.
The
museum’s
artifact
collection of over 35,000
artifacts is diverse and
wide ranging. There are
family heirlooms brought
from Denmark, remarkable
examples
of
needlework,
tools of early immigrant
tradesmen and memorabilia
from Danish-American clubs
and organizations. Many of the
items on display are treasures
which have been passed down
through the generations in
Danish families.
The museum’s grounds have
been transformed into the Jens
Jensen Prairie Landscape Park,
named for the colleague of
Frank Lloyd Wright and the
father of the Prairie School
of Landscape Architecture.
A pergola with interpretive
panels about Jens Jensen’s
life and philosophies has been
erected in the park, in addition
to two council rings available
for public use. Improvements
and additions to the park are
ongoing with the support of
museum members and donors.
In 2014 an 8,000 square foot
curatorial expansion, located
partially underground on the
museum’s west side officially
opened.
The Museum of Danish
America is located at 2212
Washington Street and is open
year-round. Please visit us at
www.danishmuseum.org
or
call 712.764.7001 for more
