Here are suggestions of things you might like to do with your children. Your children need to be outdoors every day, they need the exercise and the chance to explore new things to touch, smell, see, hear and feel. They also need to spend some quiet time with you every day - listening to a story you make up about their day, a story you tell about your childhood or read from a book. You’ll never run out of books, the local libraries are full of great reading experiences. Things to do at home Your home has many great opportunities for learning through playing. Children love to help with cooking, setting the table, and washing the dishes. They love to put pairs of socks together when you’ve finished the laundry. They can look through the grocery flyers and help make your shopping list. All these activities are full of new information and experiences for them and give them a chance to feel important and close to you. Paper maché paste You will need: • Newspaper torn into strips • Flour • water No-cook method: Use equal parts of flour and water and stir to make a paste. Dip the newspaper strips in the paper maché paste. Remove excess paste from the strips and cover your project. Let dry completely and repeat the process the next day. Keep applying strips to your project until it’s solid as you like. GENERAL IDEAS Rainy days INDOORS OUTDOORS For rainy days, play dough, water play, painting and drawing are fun activities inside. Empty cereal and cracker boxes and a roll of masking tape can let their imagination take off. Put a blanket over the table for an indoor tent, add a few pillows and plastic dishes and your children can have a play house. Read a book or tell a story Play in a different park each week Make play dough Visit a museum or gallery Yes, these games and activities can make a mess, but they are so important for your children’s development. They learn how the world works and they learn to amuse themselves. Cut up old magazines and glue them on a paper grocery bag for a collage Swim at one of Ottawa’s beaches (call 613-5806744 x 13219 for water quality) Make a “box sculpture” Go to the library for story time Have a tea party Meet some friends on your street Bake cookies Walk in the Greenbelt woods Make musical instruments from things in your kitchen Stop and watch a construction site Use pudding for finger paint Take a ride on the O Train Play a game of cards Fly a kite Have bath time for all the dolls Take the bus downtown to watch the Changing of the Guard Cut up bananas and strawberries for a fruit salad “Paint” the backyard fence with water and brushes Go on a treasure hunt by hiding different objects in the house Blow soap bubbles Make your own story book Feed the ducks and geese on the Ottawa River Do a paper maché creation (see recipe) Go on a nature walk and start a rock collection We’re including two play dough and paper maché paste recipes and a list of suggestions of indoor and outdoor activities for your family. We know you know all these things, but sometimes we’re all too tired to think for ourselves and need some help!
