Our Values We are passionately committed to our core values. We believe that these values give purpose and meaning to our lives and to those of our clients. They also provide direction for the whole organization. We intend that these values will guide us in our decision-making for many years to come. SAFETY: We believe that safety is fundamental. For the safety of our clients, our staff or the community, we believe that safety comes first. We believe that a safe environment is necessary for our clients to learn, to grow and to turn their lives around. Safety grows out of trusting relationships that are based on respect for the dignity of all persons. SERVICE: We are here to serve others. Service has been a core value of Family Resources for over 150 years. We serve others because we care. We care deeply about kids, about people, about families, and about the community. We care so much that we are committed to providing a continuum of services to respond to the needs of people. TEAMWORK: We believe in teamwork. We believe that teamwork works for us, for our clients and for the community. Our board, staff and clients work together in teams. As an organization, we believe that working collaboratively with other partners in the community is the most effective way to pursue our mission. RESOURCEFULNESS: We believe that Family Resources has grown for more than 150 years because we are resourceful. As the needs of our community changed, we have learned to adapt, to grow and to change with the times. We believe that to accomplish our mission, we need to continuously learn, to innovate and to be open to new ideas. 4 Message from Cheryl Goodwin / President It is often said that doing more with less is a common theme of non-profits – but really, couldn’t the same be said for everyone? Regardless if you’re speaking of nonprofits, government, for profits, or individual households, we’re all working hard to create efficiencies that will promote fiscal health to drive us forward. For us, it is all about partnerships. This year’s annual report is a reflection of those partnerships – “partnerships creating safety;” safety for the children and families we serve, safety for the communities in which they live, and safety for the future of Family Resources. Certainly our greatest partnership this year was our formal affiliation with Four Oaks Children and Family Services. As we move forward into the future, this affiliation will provide multiple opportunities to share resources, both human and capital. Ultimately, through the affiliation, we will enhance our partnership with those we serve and have a stronger voice with which to advocate for the needs of children and families. This year we made a strategic decision to enhance our outreach to the communities we serve and to engage community members in our mission. Our efforts included numerous partnerships and collaborations, volunteerism, special events and fundraising. Throughout this report you’ll hear about those efforts and their impact. I’m so proud to share them with you. You’re receiving this report because you’re an important part of our work. You have shown a commitment to our mission to strengthen children, families and individuals by giving of your time, talent and treasures – you are a partner creating safety. Thank you for your continued support. Family Resources 2014 Annual Report 9 “SafePath Survivor Resources has proven to be one of the leaders in Iowa moving into the Housing First Model and making it successful.” – Janelle Melohn, Iowa Attorney General’s Office Our Expanded Six County Eastern Iowa/Western Illinois Region Family Resources is there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Our Services include: • Medical, Legal and Legislative Advocacy • Counseling • Crisis Response • Education/Prevention • Housing and Sheltering Our Service Area Includes: • Clinton • Jackson • Louisa • Muscatine • Scott • Rock Island, IL SafePath Survivor Resources Creating a safety net of services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault requires a network of partners. For years, we’ve been leading the way to establish meaningful collaborations that not only meet the needs of our clients, but also support other helping professionals – creating lasting change in service delivery. Family Resources is in direct partnership with Braking Traffik. Together, we are working with health care professionals, law enforcement and local human service authorities to develop a coordinated response to victims of sex trafficking. This collaboration will result in a protocol that will ensure that all survivors receive the necessary crisis response and long-term services they need to keep them safe. We’re also working with local colleges and universities to help raise awareness and train our future health care, law enforcement and human service professionals. For the last four years, our staff have been teaching a 64 hour training course called ‘Victim Advocacy’ at Augustana College. Our SafePath staff have also been actively engaged at St. Ambrose University. There, we train staff and faculty on rape trauma and how to respond to a disclosure of sexual assault. We helped to develop their “Know Your Power” campaign – an awareness campaign aimed at promoting bystander intervention in order to create a campus that does not tolerate sexual violence. Housing First Update “Housing First” is a model of service delivery that acknowledges one’s basic need for safe and stable housing must be met first in order to effectively address the long-term needs of survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault. We’ve been working hard to develop a network of supportive landlords throughout our service region by educating them on the cycle of violence. We are proud that our efforts have helped to open the door to safe and permanent homes for survivors. 10 Family Resources 2014 Annual Report SAFE - Social Services Mental Health Services Watch the news or read a paper and you will quickly find a story related to mental health in some way. Individuals struggling with mental health issues are a rapidly growing segment of our community and they are tragically underserved. Family Resources is stepping forward to fill that gap by creating community partnerships aimed at taking our mental health services on the road to reach those in need where they are. therapy and counseling to patients already utilizing the health center. This partnership allows for comprehensive health care at its best as a patient’s physical and mental health needs are being addressed in a coordinated and seamless manner. Family Resources is committed to providing quality mental health services in Muscatine and Scott Counties and beyond. With the support of partners like the United Way of Muscatine and the United Way of the Quad Cities, as well as grant funders such as Muscatine Charities, we are able to provide mental health services to the un-insured and under-insured. We’re also committed to investing in our therapists to ensure we can offer the highest quality mental health care possible. This year, 4 of our therapists completed a six day, 48 hour training called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is one of two treatments for Acute Stress Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder highly recommended by the American Psychiatric Association. One such partnership is with Eastern Iowa Community College. Our therapists are on site at Muscatine Community College eight hours a week and alternate between the Belmont and Kahl sites of Scott Community College four hours a week. We are eliminating the barriers of stigma, transportation, scheduling, etc. with our on-site presence. Our therapists provide brief counseling as well as education and referrals for both students and staff. Our partnership extends to Edgerton’s Women’s Health Center in Davenport where our therapists are on-site 16 hours a week providing mental health Family Resources 2014 Annual Report 11 Last year, Family Resources received support from over 500 volunteers! These volunteers were true partners in our work; coordinating our special events, assisting with facility maintenance, providing direct client support and offering themselves as a resource in numerous other invaluable ways. Volunteers and Special Events Legacy Baptist Church and Sacred City Church Family Resources has had the distinct pleasure of partnering with Legacy Baptist Church and Sacred City Church for many years. Both congregations provide dedicated support to the youth residing in our foster group care programs. They coordinate and supply the materials for monthly fun night activities, they bake cakes for birthdays and they bring joy to all of our kids during the holiday season with special gifts and parties. We are so grateful for their support! 12 Family Resources 2014 Annual Report John Deere and Group O converged on our Davenport campus; rolling up their sleeves to assist with a variety of projects. Each year our volunteer teams get done in a day what would take several weeks to get done on our own. Thank you to all our United Way Day of Caring partners! United Way Day of Caring Family Resources was fortunate again this year to be selected as a site for the United Way Day of Caring. Held on Wednesday, August 20th, over 55 employees from various divisions of Family Resources could not carry out our mission without the financial support of our special events – and we could not put on our special events without the driving force of our volunteer planning committees. Thank you volunteers! SAFE - Advocacy Opening Doors Film Festival Our 8th Annual Opening Doors “Gala”, held at the Quad Cities Waterfront Convention Center, took on a Film Festival theme this year, showcasing short creative films inspired by the work of Family Resources and submitted by artists nationwide. With the help of nearly 350 friends of the agency, we were able to raise over $85,000 – supporting all of Family Resources’ programs and services. Thank you for making this year a record-breaking year for this event! events raised nearly $30,000. Rising Up Against Sexual Violence Women,” was transformed this year in an effort to recognize and include all that are affected by sexual violence. Thank you for “Rising Up” and helping us to raise nearly $25,000! Our 4th Annual luncheon to support our sexual assault services was held on Friday, October 3rd at the Quad Cities Waterfront Convention Center. The event, formerly known as “Honor the DOVE – Domestic Violence Ended Our 7th Annual DOVE Women’s Golf Tournament was held on Friday, June 6th at Palmer Hills Golf Course in Bettendorf. This special “ladies only” tournament brings together compassionate women in a fun environment to address a serious issue – domestic violence. The golf tournament is one of three DOVE events. Also associated with DOVE is our Fill the Truck event at all Quad City and Muscatine HyVee locations and an Isabel Bloom Signing Event, where a limited edition sculpture is unveiled and sold to benefit our critical services. Combined, the three Family Resources was the beneficiary of the 2014 Junior League of the Quad Cities I Am Strong Mud Run – providing $10,000 in support to our Bridge House foster group care program for teenage girls. The “I Am Strong” initiative strives to improve the perception and self-image of women and girls through leadership and empowerment. Thank you Junior League of the Quad Cities! Family Resources 2014 Annual Report 13 Family Resources strives to have each individual they encounter find avenues to reach their own definition of success. Every program hinges on the concepts of self-direction, self-confidence and the pursuit of self-reliance. Those are the building blocks for a good life, no matter how success is defined. My participation on the board has taught me that this is the inherent culture of the organization. Not only the clients, but staff and leadership also share this wonderful and progressive mentality. — Aleeza Singh, Board Member Continue a Lifetime of Giving . . . Consider a legacy gift and become a member of the Annie Wittenmyer Heritage Society. For more information contact Anita Zemba-Schadt, Director of Development at 563-468-2332. 14 Family Resources 2014 Annual Report SAFE - Family Restoration Safety Plan Services/Family Safety, Risk and Permanency Family Resources holds a contract with the Iowa Department of Human Services to provide Family Safety, Risk and Permanency services to families in Cedar, Clinton, Des Moines, Dubuque, Henry, Jackson, Lee, Louisa, Muscatine and Scott Counties. The ultimate goal of the service is to keep children safe and families together. To enhance supports and resources to our families, we have continued to form partnerships – both internally and externally, throughout the communities we serve. Quarterly, staff across all of our service regions come together for training and collaboration. This process is helping us to build an internal network of experts in the field. We are working together with other organizations throughout our various service regions; inviting them to the table so we can learn from them and they can learn from us. We are breaking down territories and eliminating barriers by partnering with other human service providers, schools, law enforcement and health professionals in an effort to work collaboratively together. These partnerships allow us to reduce the duplication of services that can often exist in communities. They create efficiencies and cost savings that ultimately benefit children and families. We know that we won’t be of any benefit to the families we serve if we don’t maintain a highly qualified and emotionally healthy workforce. This work, while incredibly rewarding, is also extremely taxing. That’s why we’ve partnered with Healing Hearts to offer both touch and touch free massage and relaxation techniques to support the self-care of all of our dedicated staff. This year, Family Resources received nearly $173,000 in grant funding from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to support our Family Safety, Risk and Permanency work. The grant afforded us the opportunity to upgrade technology, purchase therapeutic materials, provide staff training and renovate visit spaces that will ultimately enhance the parent and child interaction experience for the families we serve. Thank you to the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust for partnering with us to strengthen children and families! Family Resources 2014 Annual Report 15 Trauma Informed Care In Partnership, Family Resources, Child Abuse Council and United Way of the Quad-Cities Area have developed the Eastern Iowa- Western Illinois Trauma Informed Care Consortium. The Consortium is a community initiative designed to implement a long-term strategic plan to improve the health and wellness of our citizens. The Consortium is achieving this goal by actively moving the information of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study and Trauma Informed Care into all sectors of our community. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study was one of the largest investigations ever conducted to assess associations between childhood maltreatment and health and well- being. The study was a collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Kaiser Permanente. The study’s investigators, Dr. Rob Anda and Dr. Vincent Felitti, found that children who face abuse, neglect and household dysfunction are more likely to experience social, emotional and health challenges as adults. Consortium Highlights 16 November 2013 – January 2014 March – April 2014 Large-scale community connections were made across multiple sectors to develop synergy and momentum regarding the community impact goals of the Consortium. 11 Initiative Teams were formed and Captains were selected by Team members to begin developing a strategy to accomplish the collective goals of the Consortium. February 2014 May – December 2014 Consortium launch event held for the community with specialized training by Dr. Mark Brown and Teri Barila, from the Children’s Resiliency Initiative of Walla, Walla, Washington. Initiative Teams worked tirelessly to move the information of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and Trauma Informed Care (TIC) practices into our community. All teams leveraged natural networks of organizations in our community to create systemic and wide spread change.
