TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ June 5
TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ June 5, 2016 MADISON’S DOWNTOWN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OBRAS CORPORALES DE MISERICORDIA Prayer for The Year of Mercy ▪ Dar de comer al hambriento ▪ Dar de beber al sediento ▪ Dar posada al necesitado ▪Vestir al desnudo ▪ Visitar al enfermo ▪ Socorrer a los presos ▪ Enterrar a los muertos Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!" OBRAS ESPIRITUALES DE MISERICORDIA You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. OF MERCY Pope Francis Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. www.isthmuscatholic.org Facebook.com/CathedralParishMadison ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Ransom the captive Bury the dead SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ Instruct the ignorant Counsel the doubtful Admonish sinners Bear wrongs patiently Forgive offences willingly Comfort the afflicted Pray for the living and the dead Page 2 Cathedral Parish Madison, Wisconsin /CathedralParishMadison www.isthmuscatholic.org SERVING CATHEDRAL PARISH Most Reverend Robert C. Many men and women experience heartache in their relationships today but God wants us to experience joy! Please join us this summer for a small group book study on the book Men, Women, and the Mystery of Love: Practical Insights from John Paul II's Love and Responsibility, by Edward Sri. Tuesdays, June 7th through August 16th — 7:00-8:30 pm We will meet outdoors at the St. Raphael Cathedral site, by the 14th Station. In case of rain, we will move to St. Patrick Church. Each week we will read a chapter on our own, and then discuss it using the questions for discussion and reflection at the end of each chapter as a guide. Love and Responsibility has been called "the essential background to John Paul II’s Theology of the Body." There is no cost except to purchase the book which is available online (Amazon, etc.) Please contact Paul Kachelmeier at [email protected] to register or with questions. Seminarian Update On the facing page, Seminarian Tim Mergen introduced himself. Tim will be living at the rectory and involved in parish activities just during the month of June. In other seminarian news: John Winkowitsch did successfully defend his doctoral dissertation in philosophy on Thursday, May 26th, at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. John had worked on the first draft of the dissertation while in residence here at our parish from the spring of 2014 through the summer of 2015. John anticipates visiting Madison on his way west, within the next month or so, as he prepares to enter the novitiate for the Dominican Fathers. Grant Thies, a seminarian of our parish, will be with us for only a very limited time later this summer. He is scheduled to speak at all the Masses on the weekend of July 30th-31st. The focus of the seminarian talks given around the diocese this summer is to thank everyone for their extraordinary generosity to the Priests for Our Future capital campaign. Grant will be in 3rd Theology in the new academic year, and so anticipates ordination to the diaconate about one year from now. First Mass of Fr. Joseph Baker On Friday, June 24th, Deacon Joseph Baker will be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Madison. The Ordination Mass will be celebrated at St. Maria Goretti Church, beginning at 7:30 pm. Since only Deacon Baker is being ordained for the diocese this year, there should be ample room for all those who would like to attend. Deacon Baker is a native of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, but discerned his vocation while a student at the University of Wisconsin and a member of St. Paul’s University Catholic Center. Since St. Paul’s is currently without a building, he plans to celebrate his First Mass at Holy Redeemer Church the following morning – Saturday, June 25th – at 9:00 am. There will be no 8:00 am Mass that day. It is hoped that the many people who usually attend that Mass will come one hour later for the very special joy of joining Fr. Baker for his First Mass. Page 3 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 5, 2016 FROM SEMINARIAN TIM MERGEN MASS SCHEDULE Monday, June 6 – St. Norbert 12:10 pm at St. Patrick † Edwin Klein 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer Special Intention: Msgr. Tom Baxter Dear Cathedral Parish Community, Greetings! My name is Tim Mergen and I am a seminarian in formation to the priesthood for the Diocese of Madison. I am delighted to be given the opportunity to spend the summer with you all here at Cathedral Parish! As a result, I wanted to take the opportunity to briefly introduce myself. Tuesday, June 7 12:10 pm at St. Patrick Special Intention: Joyce Unger 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer † Bob Hennessey Wednesday, June 8 I am originally from the Madison area and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Monona throughout my childhood. I attended grade school at Immaculate Heart before moving on to graduate from Edgewood High School. Following high school, I received a nomination to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. I graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2010 and was given the opportunity to attend pilot training in Wichita Falls, TX. After earning my pilot wings, I was assigned as a special operations transport pilot in Clovis, NM. In 2014, after several years of flying which included one overseas deployment, I discerned that God was calling me to the seminary to pursue a priestly vocation. I have spent the past two years in formation at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD where I recently finished up my initial philosophy studies. I have four years of seminary remaining before ordination when, God willing, I will serve on active duty as a Catholic military chaplain splitting time between the U.S. Air Force and the Diocese of Madison. My decision to be receptive to God’s invitation to pursue a priestly vocation has been the best decision of my life. These past two years have been a great gift and the source of the deepest joy of my life. I consider it a true privilege to study for you now in preparation to one day serve you as a priest of Jesus Christ. More than anything, I truly appreciate all of your prayers and am eternally grateful for your love and support of priestly and religious vocations throughout the whole diocese. While I am overjoyed to be with you, my time at Cathedral Parish will be shorter than usual as I will be leaving the first week of July to continue my seminary formation at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy. Even though my time here will be brief, I look forward to helping out in any way that I am able to do so. I hope to meet as many people as possible over the next month and share with you the deep love of Jesus Christ and His Church that fills my life. Be assured of my prayers for you all and may God abundantly bless you! All Summer Blong This week, Deacon Ray Lukesic weighs in with his first Moment of Truth blog of the summer. Read it; comment on it! Then, move on to a second blog, The Truth We Don’t See. Relativism is like the dandelions in your lawn. Unchecked, they choke out truth. This blog series hopes to stimulate conversation on the nature of truth and to weed out the “dandelions of relativism.” Go to: blog.isthmuscatholic.org (Category: A Moment of Truth) Parish Prayer Ministry Would you like to join in prayer for fellow parishioners? If you are at a point in life when you cannot be as active as you’d like in the life of the parish – or know of someone who is in that situation, this might be of interest to you.
