2012 2013 annual report - Marin Montessori School
annual report 2012 2013 Learning By Being Marin Montessori H e a d o f S c h o o l’ s L e t t e r 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 In many ways 2012-2013 was a watershed year for Marin Montessori School, opening the way to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2013-2014. The essential components of a complete independent Montessori school were in place: an outstanding faculty, dedicated program leadership, effective administrative support and a committed and strategic Board of Trustees. These cornerstones provide the stability necessary to build a truly exceptional school, one that keeps a clear and intent focus on meeting the needs of the developing child. 2012-13 also brought us fully into the framework of the expanded and now complete school. The Jr. High Program and additional Upper Elementary classroom were no longer just visionary experiments, but practiced realities. The efforts of the last 5 years have come to successful fruition. The addition of the Jr. High has significantly changed the way we think about our school. Though our commitment to Montessori has always been unwavering, our families always had to consider when and where to make a conversion to another school for the middle years. Would their child’s Montessori background stand the test of change? Would they have to play catch up? Would the child be ready for high school down the road? Now, those questions have been resoundingly answered. With three years of graduates from our Jr. High school flourishing in high school, we know both the quality and effectiveness of a Marin Montessori education. However, the completion of the full program does not mean that we are done. From this new vantage point we have the opportunity to move our energies from institutional growth to institutional development and refinement. How best can we meet the needs of each individual child? When do we see signs of developmental transitions? What do they look like? How do we support the autonomy of the child and the integrity of his or her learning style? These questions bring depth and richness to our work. Their answers comprise the continuum of school improvement. Our Annual Report for 2012-2013 reflects a school moving from the institutional growth model of the last 50 years towards a sustainable model that will be the hallmark of the next 50 years. Financially, the school is sound and with the strategic leadership of the Board of Trustees will continue to be so. We will find ways to identify efficiencies in both the plant and the program. But where we will truly flourish is in doing the “big work” of ushering Montessori learning and teaching into the next 100 years, one year at a time. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Sincerely, Jim Munger Head of School B oa r d o f T r u st e e s P r e s i d e n t ’ s L e t t e r 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 pa r e n t s ’ a ss o c i at i o n P r e s i d e n t ’ s L e t t e r 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 Those of us with children at MMS today are fortunate indeed. The school’s thriving Montessori program, delivered in beautiful facilities on two campuses, serves our children from their toddler years through junior high school. Dedicated faculty work each day to observe and nurture each child’s intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and creative development. Our graduates transition smoothly to high school, the next step in their education. The school is financially sound. The 2012-2013 school year was busy and productive for Marin Montessori’s Parents’ Association. This happy state of affairs springs from decades of professional and volunteer commitment and energy, as dedicated faculty, staff, parents, and grandparents have worked to foster the development of the school itself as well as the children. Each of us today contributes to the ongoing development of Marin Montessori School through our actions as collaborative members of the school community. With commitment to Montessori education and its pillars of grace and courtesy as a foundation, we advance the school’s mission by coming together in ways both formal and informal, from groups such as the Parents’ Association and the Board of Trustees to after-school carpools and get-togethers. All these activities and more augment and honor the efforts of all who have contributed over the past fifty years. I look forward to the years to come. Best regards, School began with Back-to-School Night and Coastal Clean-Up for those interested in environmental stewardship. We held our second annual family “Movie Night on the Green”—where more than forty families, kids and parents alike, gathered on the grassy field to play flashlight tag, share popcorn and watch “The Lorax” under the stars. In an effort to create community among Primary families, especially those new to MMS, we hosted three off-campus Primary Playdates. We closed out the fall with three drives: the Thanksgiving food drive that every year collects boxes and boxes of food for local food banks; a gift drive in which hundreds of toys were donated to Compass Family Services for families in need during the holidays; and a quickly assembled effort to solicit basic necessities for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. It was an incredibly busy fall! Spring included our annual Ring Mountain Invasive Species Removal, where parents and kids worked to eliminate non-native plants. Our biggest event was our second Spring Carnival, with over 300 members of our community from toddler on up to Junior High enjoying a variety of carnival games, a photo booth, face painting, prizes, food, and live music, including the MMS Junior High band and several family bands. I could not have done my job as president of the PA without the help of my amazing team. I am so grateful to them for their hard work and enthusiasm as we worked together to create engaging activities and events to bring our community together. I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to my Executive Team: Ramesh Allen (Volunteer Activation), Roni Grossman (Good Works), Tiffany Haginicols (Socials and Events), Robert Horowitz (PA Marketplace), and Courtney Smith (Community Engagement). I am honored to have been among such incredible people working so tirelessly on behalf of our remarkable community!
