Strike Up the
Bands!
The 10th annual Carman-Ainsworth
All District Band Concert will take
place on Monday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m.
in the High School Gymnasium. This is a very special celebration as we
will be premiering a new piece of band literature, Voices of Thunder, under
the direction of composer Dr. Quincy Hilliard.
As in years past, we are inviting all teachers, administrators, support
staff, parents and alumni to participate in the “Mass Band” selections that
are played at the end of the concert.
Please seriously consider joining us! It is great for students to see adults
playing and enjoying music along with them. Teachers, administrators,
support staff and alumni who participated in the past have really enjoyed
themselves.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Hope to hear from you soon, and thanks for your support of the instrumental music program!

EDP/CAREERCRUISING
In the past few years, CAHS students have been able to participate in career awareness and exploration activities from kindergarten through 12th grade. The creation of the Education Development Plan (EDP) starts in the
8th grade, where the students begin to identify career and education goals.
Career exploration is integrated into the core curriculum areas bringing real-world relevance to academics and
classroom lessons. Other sections of the EDP let students showcase their accomplishments, their experiences,
and create a resume.
Students are encouraged to update their EDP on a continual basis; parents can access their student’s EDP by
logging into ww.careercruising.com all students then sign in with the username, cahs, and the password, cavaliers,
click start. From here the student can enter their EDP by the username: carm.student id (carm.002365) and the
password: student’s birthdate (enter as mmddyyyy).
Please be sure that your EDP is up to date. This is especially important for seniors, when it comes to nominations for scholarships. This is one way that we as counselors can narrow the list of eligible students. We look
VERY CLOSELY at your volunteer experience and leadership skills on your EDP. Many times scholarships
require this of their applicants.
In addition, be sure to have a valid e-mail address in your EDP. That way your counselor can communicate
upcoming deadlines, announcements, etc.
Finally, some colleges are now requesting a copy of the EDP be sent with a student’s official transcript. Make
sure that your EDP is quality work.
Carman-Ainsworth High School is hosting a parent EDP night on April 22, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Come
and review your child’s educational development plan. Call 591-5524 to reserve a spot.
MME/ACT
The junior class just completed the Sate of Michigan’s MME/ACT required testing. This test was given free
of charge to all current juniors. If anyone wants to retake the test, the traditional national tests will continue to
be available, at your expense. Students may take the test as often as they choose. It is offered every two months
throughout the school year. The deadline for registering for the June 14th ACT is May 9th.
SUMMER PROGRAMS
The 2008 summer school program is being reviewed. The final details will be released as soon as they become
available.
Announcements about summer workshops in Michigan and around the United States continue to come in
to the Guidance Office. These provide opportunities for students to attend summer programs, in their areas of
interest. Check with your counselor, if interested.
SENIOR EVENTS
Carman-Ainsworth class of 2008 Honors Convocation will be held Tuesday, June 3rd, at 6:00 p.m. in the high
school auditorium. Seniors will be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in many areas including
academic, citizenship and service. We would like to acknowledge all scholarships and awards that our seniors
have received, whether or not the awards are accepted. Please bring proof of your award to the Guidance Office, so we can honor you. Graduation is Thursday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m. at the Perani Arena and Event Center.
Seniors last day is May 27th. The remainder of the high school finishes up with a half day on June 6th.
Scholarship deadlines are approaching fast, but there are still plenty of awards out there if students apply
soon. Try this newer website called SchoolSoup which has one of the largest databases of scholarships available.

Seniors that haven’t made your final decision of what college to attend, try out this website; zinch.com.
Nine more weeks of school, work hard and do your best.

Alum, Jason Stewart
An Interview by Michael Grades
Talking to Jason Stewart, he seems
like someone everyone would know. He
graduated from Carman-Ainsworth High
School in 1995.
“Was there anything in particular that
you excelled at in school?”
“Sports, Football. I played basketball
and baseball too. I was the best at football. I was also good with communicating
with people.”
However there is more to him that
meets the eye. What stands out are his
leadership abilities and his outstanding
ability in putting others before himself. If this isn’t enough there is also
great optimism in him.
“Are you married or have you made any life changing decisions since
high school?”
“No, I’m not married but I take care of my grandfather. He means a lot
to me. I learned a lot from him and he taught me how to live.”
But he does not consider the other decisions he made to be life changing.
He went to a firefighter academy after high school. He is now a firefighter
with the city of Flint who has 48 hours off per week. He lives in the station
most of the time and explains his life at work as an “adventure.” “Every day
is different. You never know what you’re going to get into every day.”
However, there was one day that altered his life. That day was July 27,
2006. The day a house on Forest Hill was on fire.
“I remember it was getting dark and the call came in that there was a
fire…It was intense,” he explained. “There was a fire and a lot of black
smoke everywhere. The place was fire bombed. It’s called entrapment
when people are stuck in a house.”
He gave the details; people outside where crying that there was a little
girl trapped in the house.
“We had to put the fire out, all I can remember thinking was ‘we have
to save the people inside.’”
He went to the door with his partner, Perkins, and kicked it in. They
entered together and put the fire out on the first floor but couldn’t find
anyone. They went upstairs and eventually found the 8-year-old girl hiding
under a bed.
“…I don’t want it to be about me,
we’re a team, we all work together;
there’s a guy that drives the truck,
and a guy that uses the hose. We are
a team.”
His team, truck 35, was later given
the Medal of Honor, the highest medal
you can achieve in a fire squad.
He was later asked about what advice
to give to high school students. He said
“Have goals. People say that you have
limits to what you can do, but if you try
you can do it.” The Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools does not discriminate on the
basis of race, color, national origin, gender, age, disability, height, weight,
religion or marital status in any of its programs, activities or employment.

The Carman-Ainsworth Alumni directory has been published. The book features current names and addresses
(and other biographical information if you chose) of alumni from Ainsworth, Carman or Carman-Ainsworth
high schools between 1961 and 2006.
As a result of this project we received an up-to-date alumni data base. This will be used to stay in touch with
CA alum. The data base will also be made available to reunion planning committees. Please contact Community

Board Election set for May 6
This year there are two four-year seats to be filled. The candidates are incumbent, Don Conway and current classroom volunteer, Recco Richardson.
Don Conway
Candidate Don Conway is currently the
Vice President of the Carman-Ainsworth
Community Schools Board of Education.
Having been elected to a four year term in
2004, Don is seeking re-election in 2008.
Don has also served as a Board Trustee and
Secretary of the Board during his tenure on the
Board. Don has achieved both the Certified
Board Member and Merit Award Member
status from the Michigan Association of
School Boards through continuing education.
Don has lived in the District for over 40 years.
Don is married to wife Darla, and they have
a daughter Paige who is currently a freshman
at the High School.
Don is a partner and President of
“Independent Paint Supply, Inc.” with two
locations (Mundy Township and Midland)
opened in 2006 which specializes in
Commercial and Industrial Coatings. Don
is a 1978 graduation of Ainsworth High
School and a 1983 graduate of Eastern
Michigan University. Don is deeply
involved with many district activities and
functions. Don volunteers and participates
in many fund raising activities with many
groups such as Men @ W.O.R.K. (Working
on Relationships with Kids), the Drama
Departments (CAHS and CAMS), Robotics
Team, Athletic Department, and the C-A
Music Department.
W.O.W.
(Women of Wisdom)
Carman-Ainsworth High School Senior Girls have started an organization called W.O.W.
which stands for Women of Wisdom. The program began in the winter of 2007 with Ms.
Galassini as the coordinator. The objective of W.O.W. is for the older girls to be both social
and educational role models for the younger girls. Every Senior has one or two mentees that
they see once a week at Dye Elementary.
“Becoming involved, and staying involved
in the Carman-Ainsworth Community
Schools has been the most satisfying and
rewarding accomplishment of all. Always
the optimist, having been in this community
for most of my life, I believe very strongly,
not only in the C-A Community Schools,
but in surrounding Genesee County. If
individuals stay involved, do what they
can do as individuals to make this area a
better community for all of our children,
then collectively we can (and will) make a
difference.”
Go Cav’s!
Recco Richardson
Candidate Recco Richardson is seeking
to join the Board of Education to serve the
community and to have the opportunity to
promote excellence in education. As a clinical
therapist in private practice he also hopes to
share his experience in working with children
to the board.
Recco was born and raised in Flint and has
lived in the district for 9 years with his wife,
Rene, and their two children, Rani, a student
at the Middle School, and Randi, a student
at Dye Elementary. He has been a volunteer
at Dye since 2005.
As current board member for Richfield
Public Academy, he would resign that
position to come to the C-A Board.

Tyler is a four year varsity letter winner and captain of the Cavalier swim team. Tyler placed 2nd place in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle at the Big Nine meet which is considered 1st Team All League and he qualified for the state swim meet in the 100 yard freestyle.
He would encourage his team mates to do their best in both swim meets and swim practice.
He worked very hard this year by showing up to voluntary morning practices” stated Coach
Kevin McGlashen. Throughout his four years of high school swimming, he has earned the
Most Valuable Swimmer three times and one year the Phenom Award.
Not only does Tyler excel in swimming he is also a two year letter winner on the Cavalier

Men at W.O.R.K.
Working On Relationships with Kids
Sometimes in order to keep things growing, changes must be made. This April, Men at
W.O.R.K. was planning on hosting another major fundraiser. The past two years it had been
the Men at W.O.R.K. vs. the TV 12 No Stars. This year we would like to try something different. We would like to postpone the fundraiser to the fall, so that the school year can kick
off with a big event rather than ending with one. After some meetings, it had been decided
that this is something the group would like to try.
This past March Men at W.O.R.K. was again asked to help with setup of the Children’s
Services Fair at the Courtland Mall. Approximately 10 men were able to help with this event.
This was a wonderful opportunity where families could see many of the Genesee County
resources in one place. Many organizations and families attended the Children’s Services
Fair and Men at W.O.R.K. was very pleased to be a part of it, thank you to all who helped
set up this event.
Please keep in mind that there are only two meetings left in this school year. We meet
on the second Tuesday of each month at the Learning Community. If you have anything at
all that you would like to share or contribute please call Mike at 810-591-7232 or Rod at
810-591-7272.

The National Fatherhood Initiative is a great resource for fathers and families. Here is some
information they have published on how to help your child do well in school.
1. Don’t let Mom do all the work.
Some dads leave everything to do with school up to mom. Getting involved will help
your child and your relationship. It takes the pressure off mom and shows them that you
respect her.
2. “Show and Tell” how important school is.
Your child needs to hear you say that school is important to success in life. Take the time
to talk with your child every day about the school day.
3. Help with school work.
Helping with school work may help your child learn more. Look for your child’s strengths
and weaknesses, so that you can help your child where she needs it the most.
4. Make school fun.
Your child should have fun learning no matter how old he or she is. Encourage your child
to play sports, join school clubs, play in the school band or get involved in student
government. This will make school fun and help your child do better and stay out of
trouble.
5. Spend a day or two in class.
Ask your child’s teacher if you can visit the class. This will give you an idea not only of
the subjects your child learns, but how the teacher teaches them. You don’t want to confuse
your child by being taught one way at home and another way at home.
6. Go to School and Class events.
Go to meetings with the teacher, to class parties, to school ball games and plays. When
dads do these things their children get better grades and like school more.
7. Meet with the teacher.
This will help you get to know how the teacher will teach and discipline your child. The
teacher won’t mind because it will show that you want to be involved.
8. Join a group that helps parents become involved.
Become a member of a group, like the PTA, that helps parents to get involved in your
child’s school. The club can create projects and events that help dads to get involved in
the school.
9. Get to know other children and parents.
Your child will make friends in class and may or may not get along with others. Knowing
the children in the class, and their parents, will help you talk to your child about the things
that can happen at school. This will help if you need to talk with the teacher.

Dillon Math Night
Fifty-five families attended the Second and Third Grade Math Night at Dillon Elementary
on February 28. Each family was treated to dinner and received four math games that they
could take home and play together. We want to thank all of the families who attended and
made the evening such a success!

Randels
March was Reading Month at Randels. Superintendent Bill Haley, board member Don
Conway and Red Robin found time to visit classrooms and read to Randels students.
K – 2 Family Math Night
at Dye Elementary
On March 6, Dye Elementary hosted Family Math Night for Kindergarten, First, and
Second students and their families. This event was sponsored by the Title I program. After
a delicious dinner, families learned math games from our Everyday Math program. Every student received a math kit to play
the games at home. All students who
learned at least four games with their
families were entered in a drawing for
a cupcake party in school the next day.
Dominick Vantino was the lucky winner, and he shared his cupcakes with
his classmates in Mrs. Gibbons’ room.

MU Teen Dating Abuse Awareness
Project 2008
Carman Ainsworth students will soon have the opportunity to attend school workshops
designed to create greater awareness of the often hidden problem of teenage date abuse. A
play The Yellow Dress will be followed by discussions led by Youth Violence Prevention
specialists and advocates from the YWCA. Printed materials will be handed out along with
contact information.
A Ruth Mott Foundation grant has been received by the Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa
Gamma Society International partnering with GISD to continue the project the chapter has
developed and to present The Yellow Dress program county-wide. This program complements efforts already being made by local school districts to meet requirements of the State
of Michigan Health Curriculum.
Delta Kappa Gamma is an international society of key woman educators. Mu Chapter has
members from across Genesee County. Heading the Teen Dating Abuse Awareness Project
is retired Carman-Ainsworth educator Cheryl Cyran. Other committee members from the

Positive Behavior Reward System
Good behavior is rewarded here at Carman-Ainsworth Middle School. As students attend
classes and go about the business of learning, they often come across situations that require
them to make decisions. We encourage positive behavior and “good” decisions by rewarding
students who exhibit good behavior and good choices with food coupons to local restaurants
and bookmarks that encourage reading.
In addition to turning in lost items to the office, other types of “random acts of kindness”
are also rewarded, such as picking up debris in the hallways or outside, without being asked,
reporting inappropriate incidences to staff members or assisting a classmate who may be
struggling in a particular class. The “acts of kindness” are referred to Officer Gage, who
praises the student and re-enforces their behavior with rewards.
Sincerely, Officer Gage

Old Electronics Being Collected
Carman Ainsworth High school’s Science Olympiad students have embarked on a Cell
Phone Recycling Program to defray some of the cost for purchase of supplies for construction materials and books needed to prepare for the competition.
They are collecting: • Cell phones • Ink Jet printer cartridges • DVD’s • Laptops • MP3 players • Video game consoles such as X-Box, Sony playstation, Wii • Digital cameras • Portable
navigation & GPS devices such as Garmin, Magellan, Tom-Tom and etc. • Digital picture
frames • Portable DVD players.
Clarification: This program is limited to the list above and excludes recycling of computer towers, monitors, and printers due to their size. However, through an agreement with
Dell, used computers, components, and peripherals (even non-Dell ones) can be taken to
Goodwill for recycling free of charge. (See http://www.reconnectpartnership.com/ for more
information)
Cellular phones contain toxic materials such as lead and cadmium, which while harmless
during the usable life of a phone, become hazardous to our soil, air and water supply when
disposed of improperly. Carman Ainsworth Science Olympiad Team aims to help clean up
the environment while they raise money for their competition.
If you would like to donate your OLD electronic devices that you no longer need please
send them to the high school office to Mrs. Lotfi or Mrs. Roos.
Avideh Lotfi (chemistry) and Krystal Roos (biology) are Coaches for Science Olympiad.

Music Notes
May
By the time this edition of the Courier reaches your mailbox,
there will be only about a month left of the 2007/08 school year. On
behalf of the music staff, I would like to extend a warm and heartfelt “thank you” to each family and friend of a Carman-Ainsworth
musician. Without your support - be it reminding a child to practice,
or getting them to a concert, making a donation or supporting a fund
raiser, chaperoning an event, or just passing on a friendly word - what we do would not be
possible. We, the music staff of Carman-Ainsworth, are very lucky to have such great students and families, and a wonderful community in which to share our passions: kids, teaching and music. I hope that the school year has been a successful one for each and every one
of your students. We are looking forward to an even better 2008/09. As always, if I can be of
any help, please call me. Thanks again, and have a great last month of school.
Although the calendar “officially” says it is spring, we have had many typical Michigan
spring days. We began the day with temperatures in the lower 30s and will end the day with
rain, snow and falling temperatures. But, in spite of the disappointing drop in temperature,
we can count on warm weather being just around the corner and summer close behind. This
is a great time to begin planning for those lazy days of summer. To this end, below you
will find a few ideas where your music student might want to spend some time expanding
their musical experience this summer. There are many wonderful day and overnight camps
across the state that offer lots of fun, learning and music all wrapped up into one package.
As always, if you have any questions about the camps listed here, or want further information, please call me.
Some camps to choose from:
• Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp: band, choir, art, dance, orchestra, piano, and more for
students in grades 5-12.
• Herter Music Camp: band for students in grades 5-12.
• Jim Lee Fine Arts Camp: band, jazz, guitar, art and theater for students in grades 7-12.
These are just a few of the options available. Many religious organizations offer non-denominational music camp experiences too. And, many camps offer scholarships to help pay
for tuition. To find the best place for your child, try www.mysummercamps.com.

Buy a Brick for Kids!
The Carman-Ainsworth Education Foundation is selling bricks to be placed in the Alumni
Plaza at our renovated stadium. The monies from this sale will be used to enhance the quality of education for all students in our district. At this time, 50% of the monies from each
brick go directly into the Foundation, 25% offsets the cost and maintenance of the bricks,
and 25% has been designated for a student group. The C.A.R.E.S. Committee asked the
Cavalier Band Boosters if they would be willing to spearhead the sales. Having trouble
deciding what to put on your brick? Don’t let that stop you from ordering. We have many
different examples to share. Call today. Let us help you help kids!
