New Mayor, Police Chief, Council Elected; BREC Renewal Passes
Jr. Shelton
James Salsbury
Shane Evans
Kim Fralick
On April 5th, Jr. Shelton was chosen as the new Mayor of Central
with 4,546 out of 7,705 votes, or 59%. James Salsbury was elected Chief of
Police with 52% of the votes, or 3,944 out of 7,578. Council candidates who
received more than 10% of the total council votes were also elected outright.
Four of the five seats were filled this way. Shane Evans was elected with
4,031, or 11%, of the 36,734 total votes cast for council. Kim Fralick won
5,135, or 14%, of the votes. Incumbent Wayne Messina received 4,135 votes,
or 11%, and John Vance won 3,984 votes, also approximately 11%. Central’s
total voter turnout for this election was 37% of registered voters. The BREC
tax renewal passed parish-wide, with 60% of the 17,799 total votes. The
parish-wide voter turnout was 6.4% to vote on the BREC renewal. Visit the
Louisiana Secretary of State’s website for a more detailed breakdown of the
election results. Central’s fifth council seat will be filled through a runoff
election on May 3rd between Jason Ellis and Ralph Washington. All elected
officials will take office on July 1st of this year.

There will be a public

in last Saturday’s primary election, needed to have
more than 10% of the total council votes cast.
Only four of the five council seats were filled this
way. This leaves a runoff between the top two
remaining vote getters, Jason Ellis and Ralph
Washington. Ellis received 3,071 out of 36,734
votes, or 8.4% of the total, while Washington
received 3,625 votes, or 9.87% of the total. The
election to decide Central’s fifth council position
will be held on Saturday, May 3rd.

Political Sign Reminder
All campaign signs for mayor and chief of police, as well as
all council signs except for those for Jason Ellis or Ralph Washington,
should be removed by the end of the day this Saturday. Ellis and
Washington signs may remain since there is a runoff election between
those two candidates in May. If you see any signs after Saturday for
any other candidate, please contact the candidate to let him or her know
so they may be picked up. Please remember also that no signs for any
candidate should be left in the right-of-way.

Central Speaks - Every Home, Every Week
Central Speaks has been
mailing direct to virtually every
home in Central for the past six
weeks. The response has been great,
so we will try to continue!
Our advertisers are happy
that almost every Central resident
has the newspaper in their hands
every week. Our readers who live
in Central but have Baker, Zachary,
and Pride zip codes are getting
home delivery for the first time and
the feedback has been excellent.
Of course, our ability to
direct mail to all of Central is more
costly, but we are confident that our
advertisers will continue to see the
value. As long we can afford to, we
will direct mail.
A few homes on Hubbs and
Denham Roads are on a carrier route
that is mostly outside of Central.
For those few readers who will not
receive the paper in the mailbox,
Romero's and Family Food Store on
Denham Rd. will still have a stack
of papers every Thursday.

I would like to first
wish our newly elected and
re-elected Mayor, Chief of
Police and Council Members
the very best during the their
term. I called Mr. Shelton
Saturday night and pledged
that I would continue to do
all that I can to move Central
forward and I shared that I
have challenged all those that
supported me to do the same.
Once our schedules
have calmed, I look forward
to meeting with our mayorelect, and that meeting will
likely further define the
direction I should take to
best serve Central. In the
meantime, I will remain, as
I have always been, involved
in Central’s many worthwhile
community efforts, including
trying to save our historic
gymnasium.
The Central Cultural
Foundation (CCF) meets

tonight at 7PM to spearhead
an effort to save the 1927
gymnasium on the “Old
Middle School” property at
Sullivan and Hooper. Our
historic gym is the oldest
standing public school
building in EBR Parish and
the oldest non-residential
building in Central.
There are many
photos of the old gym
circulating around Central
from different eras. There
are also many people who
remember playing ball or
even attending graduation
in that gym. I have toured
the facility and it is in
surprisingly good shape.
The
building
has been scheduled for
demolition, but our school
board has responded to our
request to turn to the Central
community and see if we can
put together an acceptable
plan to save the building. We
have until late July to present
a plan, and if it is approved
by our School Board, the
scheduled August removal
of the building could be
avoided.
The CCF is proposing

that the building be turned
into a museum to house the
many artifacts, photos and
documents that are the history
of Central. Many citizens
have so much of our history
boxed and waiting for a home
that could document and care
for the tale of the history of
this community.
In addition, the
space could be used for
meetings,
performances,
exhibitions, workshops or
even a “Visitors Center”.
There is no doubt that this
is a big project, but we have
seen how this community
comes together and works
when the cause is right.
We will need many
interested volunteers with
diverse talents and interests
to do this right. Grantwriting, historical research,
fund-raising, construction
planning,
recruiting
corporate
sponsors,
publicity, and organizing
volunteers will all be
components of this effort.
So, anyone interested in
attending or helping please
call me at 262-DAVE for
details.

Red vs. White Powder Puff Action
This year, the annual Powder Puff
Flag Football game was played on
Wednesday, April 2, on Rebel Field.
Since this game is normally played in
the fall, many people had decided it just
wasn’t going to happen this year. However, about two weeks out from the official game girls were allowed to start signing up. The week of March 24, student
coaches met in the conference room to
draft their teams. Each team was allowed to hold two official practices.
Members of the White Team (l to r)
were senior Kelli Wilson, freshman Raven Monson, junior Gracie Brian, fresh-
man Olivia Wells, freshman Madison
Nunnery, junior Madison Cutrer, freshman Kristen DeFreitas, freshman Alexa
Lubecke, sophomore Allison Flurry, &
freshman Samantha Romero. Coaches
for the White Team were junior Logan
Samson, senior Blake McCulley, senior
Mason Cockerham, and junior Cole
Kinchen (not pictured).
Members of the Red Team (kneeling):
sophomore Caroline Harris, sophomore
Meagan Barker; (standing): senior Alex
Stuckey, sophomore Reagan Baggett,
freshman Hope Scrantz, sophomore
Amber Dougherty, senior Hope Hebert,
freshman Madison Ogelsby, senior Kelly
Nijoka, junior Aubrey Dean, freshman
Maggie Bryson, sophomore Jena Pocorello, junior Lauren West, freshman Anna
Grace Dean, freshman Allie Mouton, &
junior Shelby Romero.
The game was neck and neck ending in an 18 point tie at the end of the
fourth quarter. Game officials, Coach
Terry King and Coach Michelle Yawn,
made the decision to allow a five minute
overtime period.
In an exciting turn of events the
White Team pulled off the upset with a
final game score of 24 to 18.

CHS Girl’s Bowling #2 in CHS Boy’s Bowling in the
State Playoffs
Elite 8 for Second Year
CHS Girls Bowling (11-2) saw in the cards for Central as their
their season end abruptly Thursday
(4-3-14) at AMF All Star Lanes Kenner. In Round 4 of the LHSAA
Bowling State Playoffs, #2 Central
High would suffer a tough “break”
and ultimately help derail their path
to the Final Four of the playoffs and
possibly a State Championship.
In Round 3, Central received a
BYE due to being a #1 Seed and
took on 5-seeded St Scholastica
(13-3) in Round 4. The Wildcats
took control of the match in Game
1 by jumping out to a 7-1 and 940846 lead. Haley Young (Junior/
Co-Captain) paced the Wildcats
with a 224 and Sarah LeDuff
(Sophomore/Co-Captain) added
a 182. St Scholastica would gain
some momentum and win a close
Game 2 5-3 and 883-857 to close
Central’s lead to 10-6 and 68 Total
Pins. Young would once again
lead the Wildcats with a 190.
Unfortunately in the 3rd Frame
of Game 3, Central’s run towards
a State Championship suffered a
major setback. Freshman Brittnee
Robinson would suffer a sprained
wrist. In a very gutsy effort,
Robinson finished Game 3 but there
would be no inspiring comebacks
momentum from Game 1 quickly
fizzled. With one of Central’s key
bowlers injured, St Scholastica
would take Game 3 6-2 and 853780. After 3 games, Central and St
Scholastica were tied 12-12 and the
match would come down to Total
Pins. Unfortunately the Doves
found just enough pins to win
2582-2577 and win the match 1512. Five pins is all that separated
the Wildcats from appearing in
their first Final Four. Young’s
181 once again led the Wildcats in
Game 3.
Overall Central’s season as
a team ended in the Elite 8 (the
farthest a Central Girls Team has
ever gone) and was led by Young’s
595 and LeDuff’s 529. The Girls’
season will continue this Saturday
(4-12-14) at All Star Lanes –
Baton Rouge (11am) with Young
and LeDuff advancing to the State
Finals (Round 5 & hopefully Round
6) through the Girls’ State Singles
Championship. Each Wildcat will
try to bring home Central’s 2nd
Girls’ State Singles Championship.
Come support Central’s Young and
LeDuff this Saturday, admission is
$5.

CHS Baseball Works Hard
Towards District Title
Submitted by Stacie Birch
Central varsity baseball traveled to Broadmoor last week and secured
another district win 17-0. Central’s pitching only allowed 1 hit. The
pitchers were Cameron Polk, Josh Stevens, and Jude Fontenot. Joseph
Schoop hit a grand slam and had 7 RBIs against Broadmoor. Adam
Porche also had a hot bat.
On Saturday, the Wildcats had their first district loss to Walker.
2-1 was the final score. This was a great game played by both teams.
Preston Fondren did a great job as the pitcher for this game. Central
continues district play this week against Live Oak on Wednesday at
4pm and Scotlandville Saturday at 1pm. Both games will be played at
"The Yard."
Everyone come out and support the CHS Baseball team as they
continue to play hard for the title of District Champions.
CHS Boys Bowling (12-3) ended
their season in heartbreaking fashion
on Thursday (4-3-14) at AMF All Star
Lanes - Kenner. In Round 4 of the
LHSAA Bowling State Playoffs, #5
Central High took on the #1 ranked
team in the state, Brother Martin (150), in what turned out to be the match
of the year.
Game 1 set the tone of match. In
a very close opening game, Central
would stun the Crusaders take a 5-3
lead and led Total Pins 1171-1164.
Led by their anchor and one of Baton
Rouge’s best bowlers, Jacob Garretson
(Junior/Captain), who averaged 210
during the high school season, would
open up with a 228. Central’s great
scores didn’t stop there. Dylan Ringo
(Freshman) rolled a 216, Kevin
Kennedy (Senior) added a 215 and
Parker Aucoin (Freshman) tacked on
a 210. In game 2 the Crusaders would
take complete control of the match
and jump out to an 10-6 lead and take
command of Total Pins by winning
1230-1086. The 1230 was the highest
game bowled against Central the
entire season. Once again Garretson
led the way for the Wildcats with a
266.
In bad shape and down 137 pins,
Central bowled one of their best games
of the year with an 1187. Garretson
continued his tremendous bowling
and led the Wildcats with a 245,
followed by Ringo’s 214, Aucoin’s
211 and Sean Murphy’s (Senior) 203.
Brother Martin would struggle most
of Game 3 and lose the game 2-6.
After three games were in the book,
Central and Brother Martin were
tied at 12 a piece, making the match
decided by the all important Total Pins
worth 3 points. The Crusaders would
hold on to the lead by 41 pins with a
1094 game. With just enough, the #1
ranked Brother Martin won Total Pins
3488-3447 and got the extra 3 points
to win the match 15-12 and end the
scare of their season. The final blow
came in the 10th Frame where 5 of the
6 Wildcats opened and the Crusaders
closed the entire 10th Frame. For
Central, Garretson was high on the
team with a 739 series, then Ringo’s
604, Aucoin’s 591, Kennedy’s 554
and Murphy finished with a 530.
Brother Martin was led by Austin
Boulignay with a 668 series/255
games, Max Oertiling’s 621 (219) and
Victor Earl’s 592 (215).
