Living In “Mayberry”
I suppose after Tuesday’s big
election I should use this column
to render my opinion about the
direction of the Parish and Nation
for the next four years. The last
time I counted, we have several
newspapers, a dozen radio stations
and about 300 television channels
that tell us all about the elections,
but only one newspaper, Central
Speaks, is dedicated to news about
Central. The election results are
on page one, so let’s talk about
Central, a place that I have been
accused of seeing as “Mayberry”.
Our goal at Central Speaks is
to print all of the news we can get
our hands on every week about
Central. Many of our articles are
submitted by groups and people
in the community. That is also
what makes Central Speaks a
“community newspaper”. Where
else can you read about some
of our young men becoming
Eagle Scouts, a team of eight
year old girls winning a softball
tournament, a lost dog found and
returned to an elderly couple, and
the 100th birthday of a life-long
resident? Those could certainly
be mistaken for stories about
Mayberry…but they are indeed
real Central stories.
I am challenged each week by a
story or two that doesn’t feel like
Mayberry, so I try to find the good
in the story as well. A wind storm
that fells trees and all but destroys
several homes in Central is
certainly news, but the neighbors
that show up an hour later with
chainsaws and tarps to help save
those homes…that is Good News
for the Great City of Mayberry
Central.
I am painfully aware that
Central is a growing city with
very real problems to face in the
areas of economic development,
education, city growth and
politics. We will continue to
report on those issues, even when
they tarnish my “Mayberry” view
of Central. I actually do not want
to be the guy calling attention to
bad legislation and crimes, but I
feel a responsibility to report the
bad with the good.
But let’s go back to Mayberry. I
grew up swimming in the Comite
River and riding my bike down
Blackwater Road at the age of nine
with my brothers to buy candy at
Cothern’s Store. Everyone piled
into Grandpaw’s Ford after church
and rode into town to go to the
Picadilly and we all “helped” bale
hay every summer. I know now
that I wasn’t really much “help”
until I learned to drive a tractor and
could actually throw a bale of hay,
but Grandpaw and Uncle Wesley
had this seven year old convinced
he was important just riding on the
hay wagon.
Today in Mayberry Central
people still head for the Comite
River on Saturdays, bike trails
are often a part of proposed new
developments, and Central families
still own the convenience stores
where kids can buy a candy bar.
Our locally owned restaurants have
replaced the trip to Picadilly after
church and tractors and hay bales
still dot the open fields in Central.
After Mia and I got home from
last Friday’s CHS football game
she posted this on Facebook and
says it better than I ever could:
I am grateful for my little
"Mayberry" town, where young
men walk up to the high school
principal and shake his hand,
where young people pick up
things older folks have dropped
and return it to them with a smile,
where someone takes responsibility
to kick ice out of the way that
someone else dropped so no one
slips, where young ladies in ROTC
uniforms say "excuse me" as they
pass, where folks with handicaps
are not just welcomed, but actively
encouraged to participate in the
life of their community, and most
of all, where an entire stadium
full of people fall silent and bow
their heads as a local pastor prays
for a family that has just suffered
loss. Welcome to Wildcat Stadium
on a Friday night in the heart of
Central, Louisiana. God bless my
little "Mayberry."

Johnny’s Pizza House Now Open
By Wayde & Daniell Sutton
There are plenty of choices when it comes to
pizza restaurants. Most offer the same experience
and a similar product, while only a select few are
truly worth getting excited about. Central has
just gained another pizza restaurant and, if first
impressions are any indication of future success,
the city’s residents are in for a treat.
Johnny’s Pizza House, located at 14790 Wax
Road, opened its doors on October 30th for an
invite-only soft opening. Those invited were
offered access to the majority of the menu at no
cost. The event was an effort to prepare the staff
for regular business and to give them real-time
experience in preparing food during a business
rush. Owners Charles and Jamie Savoie looked
on as their staff took orders and served food to
guests in a timely and efficient manner. They
mingled with their patrons and asked for critiques
and praise alike. The result was overwhelming
approval.
Johnny’s Pizza House offers a diverse menu
populated by tried and true staples as well as
several house specialties. In addition to pizza,
they offer cheese sticks, bread sticks, dessert
cinnamon sticks, boneless and bone-in buffalo
wings, salads, muffaletta sandwiches, and their
own twist on a calzone called a “Flip.”
The ingredients used in the preparation of
Johnny’s pizzas are top-notch. Generous portions
of fresh toppings are placed over delicious sauce,
which is spread evenly on top of quality handtossed dough and covered with 100% fresh
mozzarella cheese. The combination is then
placed in the oven and cooked to a satisfying crisp.
The result is a pizza with crust that is just thick
enough to be enjoyable without overwhelming
the rest of the pie, and toppings that are piping hot
and juicy. The house special “Pepperoni Plus” is
an especially satisfying pie that includes a double
helping of pepperoni and extra cheese. Johnny’s
original “Sweep the Kitchen” offers a full mix of
meats and veggies and is sure to delight.
Johnny’s offers their pizzas in a variety of sizes
ranging from a single serving small to a familysized 14” large. On weekdays during lunch
hours, they host a buffet that is value priced at
$5.99, and includes a host of classic and specialty
pizzas as well as a salad bar and a dessert bar.
In addition, all of Johnny’s pizzas are offered
as a take-and-bake option, in which the pizza is
prepared and preserved for you to take home and
bake later.
Johnny’s facility has two dining areas, one
of which houses several arcade-style gaming
machines. Multiple high-definition televisions
are available throughout the seating areas as well.
Both tables and booths are available and the
seating arrangements are perfect to accommodate
families.
Overall, Johnny’s Pizza House should be a
welcome addition to Central. The food is delicious
and unique, and the atmosphere is friendly. The
people behind the counter strive to make every
experience a pleasant one and they look forward
to serving you a great tasting meal soon!

Around this time of year I get slightly overzealous with the “flavors”
of the season. In fact, I might even be slightly obsessed with all things
pumpkin. I have small pumpkins for a centerpiece on the kitchen table,
pumpkin spice candles lit all over the house and, most importantly, I’ve
been experimenting with lots of recipes that involve pumpkin! I’ve made
pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin oatmeal, but these
pumpkin pancakes might be the greatest! And, being that they are filled
with vegetables and whole grains, they easily fit into a healthy diet. For
instance, one pancake is only 60 calories—pancakes made with pre-made
mixes are usually close to 100 calories a piece!

Central Community Thanksgiving Worship Service: Wednesday,

Greenwell Springs Rd. Message by Pastor Donnie Shaffer of Central Church.
Music by GSBC Choir and Orchestra joined by Central area worship teams.
Thanksgiving prayers and scripture readings by Central area pastors. Fingerfood reception immediately following service.
First Baptist Church Central: This year, in thinking about the needs that
are out there during the holiday season, one of the greatest needs are the
emotional ones. As we move into the holidays, there are many people that
dread this time of year because their loved one has passed away, or because
they are away from family for some reason. With that in mind, our church
wanted to do something to help. We want to invite anyone who desires to
come to a Thanksgiving Day dinner hosted at First Baptist Church Central.
If someone can't be with their family, we want them to come be a part of
our family! The event will take place on November 22 at 11 AM. If anyone
wants to attend, they simply need to RSVP with the church office: 225261-3722. There will be no charge for the meal, but an RSVP is required
to attend. We simply want folks to know that they are loved and that others
care about them.. -Jason Allen, Pastor

CAPA Corner:
Words of Encouragement from the Central Area Pastor’s Association
Valley-walking can be tough! Weathering certain storms in life can
take stoutness. Beyond the platitudes of well-wishers lies the creeping
shadow of a storm that desires to grip all valley-walkers with coldness
and fear. Our enemy is hopelessness when we allow the storm to become
the reality we live within rather than trust. Trust is the key component for
all those traveling in a valley. Let me encourage you, that even though
it is indeed our Lord at times that leads us straight into certain storms,
He never leaves us alone within that storm. The Psalmist says, “Even
though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil, for you are with me...” He is always with us! So what could be
the purpose for challenges that come our way in the valleys? Only God
knows the reasons for all of life's storms, but let me suggest a reason for
some storms: revelation!
I believe that revelation comes to us much more often in the valleys of
life, because it's there we drown out the noise of the surrounding world
and listen more carefully for our Lord's voice. The shadows can reveal
our faith- our “trust-culture.” They can be strong indicators of whether
we're on the narrow path or on a journey of our own making. Trust is
the key. Where do you place yours? Storms and valleys have a way of
helping us with this question.
Dale Phillips, Comite Baptist Church

Central Schools. Over 400 books were given to children in Central Intermediate
School, Central Private, St. Alphonsus School, and Galilee Baptist School. Each
child received a personal copy of the book, which is more than just a dictionary.
It contains information on many subjects and includes a copy of the Constitution,
the Declaration of Independence, braille, sign language, information on all the

WILDCAT UPDATE
CENTRAL: DISTRICT 4-5A CHAMPS
Photo by Michael Spangler - The Wildcat defense continues to impress vs Live Oak
Central 56, Live Oak 27
Central (9-1, 5-0) showed they have many weapons Friday night in front
of a large home crowd as they rolled past Live Oak (5-5, 2-3) 56-27. Central
scored two quick touchdowns in the first quarter on passes from Brett Courville
to Jake Myer and Devon Gales. Live Oak put a touchdown on the board with
1:38 left in the first quarter on a five yard run by Wesley Howard. Three plays
later, Gary Triplett carried the ball around right end and put a spin move on the
last defender on the way to a 52 yard score.

WILDCATS FACE GREEN WAVE FRIDAY
The 4th seeded Central High Wildcats(9-1, 5-0), will face the 29th seed
Ponchatoula Green Wave (5-4, 3-3) Friday night in Wildcat Stadium in the bidistrict round of the State football playoffs. Ponchatoula finished the season
strong winning their last two games over Slidell and Hammond. This is a team
that upset a highly ranked Dutchtown team during the 2011 season. They play
a double slot offense very similar to Parkview, a scheme that can be hard to
defend. They are big on the defensive line and have experience in the backfield.
Central coming out of a tough undefeated district run, should be ready to
attack a new opponent. The “Cats” have added new wrinkles to their game
plan every week, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with for the
playoffs.
Come out and support your home town team Friday as they take the first step
in what they hope will be a run to the Superdome December 8th.

District Champs, Continued from Page 10
CHS Football Photos by Michael Spangler
Live Oak opened the second quarter
with a 72 yard, 10 play drive culminating
in a one yard run by Howard to make
the score 21-12. Two minutes later
Courville again connected with Myer
on a 25 yard TD pass. By the end of
the half, Live Oak and Central had both
added touchdowns to make it 35-20.
Central’s defensive back Paul
Broussard got the Wildcat’s off to a
good start in the third quarter with an
interception returning it 18 yards for
a touchdown. The defense shutdown
Live Oak in the second half, forcing
a fumble and an interception, only
allowing the Eagles to score late in the
fourth when victory was secured.
Coach Sid said after the game, “I’m
so proud of these boys and the job
they’ve done going 9-1. That’s pretty
impressive with the schedule we’ve
played.”

Congratulations to Central youth football players, who will be in the
playoffs beginning this weekend. There will be a pep rally for these teams
tonight (Thursday) at Lovett Road Park at 7PM. A mid-week playoff game
was held on Wednesday between A and B Teams to determine the third
seed for the weekend. If both A and B Teams won, they will play Saturday
at Denham. Also on Saturday, C and D Teams will play against St. Amant
at St. Amant Stadium. D Team will play at 3PM, and C Team will play at
4PM. Come to the pep rally and games to cheer on our players! If any of
the teams make it, Central could possibly host the Superbowl. Look for the
players and cheerleaders in the Central Christmas Parade on December 1st!
CHS Swim Team Has
Strong Showing at City Meet
Submitted by Coach Osborne
The Central boys swim team finished
7th in the City Meet last Sunday,
which is their best finish since 2009.
The 118 points were good enough to
finish ahead of district rivals Zachary
and Walker, and just one place behind
Denham Springs.
Leading the way for the Wildcats
were the relays. The 200 medley relay
finished 4th while the 200 freestyle
relay finished 6th.
Individually, Matthew Arnold
finished 6th in the 500 freestyle in a
personal best time, while he finished
7th in the 100 backstroke. Daniel
Parker also had a great meet swimming
personal best times in both his events.
His times were good enough to finish
9th in the 50 freestyle and 7th in the
100 breaststroke. Sean Murphy also
swam his personal best times in his
two events. Sean finished 11th in
the 200 freestyle and 12th in the 500
freestyle.
Kade McAdams, who has been
within one second of qualifying for
the state time in the 100 freestyle for a
month, reached his goal by swimming
the 100 freestyle in 57.72 seconds.
Kade placed in the top 16 of the 50
freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
The coaches were pleased to see
the team handle the pressure of the
City Meet and perform at their best.
Much of the success in personal best
times can be attributed to the detailed
work of Coach Mary Hodges who
focused on minor technical aspects of
swimming in the practices leading up
to the City Meet.
The Wildcats will close the season at
the State Meet in Sulphur, November
16-17. The entire team, boys and girls,
will participate at the meet. Individual
qualifiers are: Matthew Arnold, Sean
Murphy, Kade McAdams, Aaron
Raggio, Ty Wilkins, and Daniel Parker.

A sad but somehow fitting story about last Friday's CHS Football
win. Central lost Milam Venable at Wildcat Stadium during
pregame. Mr. Venable, who had been in failing health, loved CHS
Football and had his "regular" place in the stands. EMS responded
quickly but were unable to revive him. His son, Jay Venable was
there with him there in the stands, as always, and grandson Micah
Jay Venable was on the field as a member of the CHS football team.
Both Jay and Micah Jay stayed for the game, as we are all sure
Milam Venable would have wanted. Jay shared with me later in
the stands, "If you have to go, it's great that you go out doing what
you love...and he loved Central Football."
Our prayers and encouragement go out to the entire family, and
I am certain that Milam Venable will be thought of fondly as the
Wildcats take the field again this Friday. -Dave Freneaux
