Cavaliers cruise past Miners
Youngster turning
trapshooting into
trophies

For one youngster, a 12-gauge
shotgun, goggles, Remington
shells and orange trap or clay
pigeons are all he needs for an
enjoyable afternoon.
On Sunday afternoons, when
many would be content with
relaxing on the couch, possibly
watching football or a movie,
Rowdy England, 12, works on
his craft. His father says in a
practice session, Rowdy may
go through 100 rounds.
In his three years of trapshooting, R. England has enjoyed quite a bit of success. Already this year, his performance
earned him 2014 AIM National
Singles Championship, Pre
Sub-Junior Champion, as well
as Youth State Winner at the
2014 Illinois State Shoot Shamrock Shoot-out, which was presented by AIM.
For his wins at the competitions, there’ve been trophies,
belt buckles, medallions and
more. For state and national
championships, Rowdy was
presented with large leather
pouches.
His performance earlier this
summer earned him and his
teammates a photo on the cover
of Trap & Field, the official
publication of the American
Trapshooting Association.
“It seemed like a lot of fun,”
Rowdy said, admitting he knew
at first it would take time to experience success. Now, his attitude has changed to more of an
“in it to win it,” approach.
R. England’s success also has
gotten him 25-straight recognition for successful shots in a
row.

The home team had enough offense in the first half to secure the
win, but that didn’t stop the Cavaliers from continuing to find the
back of the net.
Carlinville’s Pietro Lentini
scored two goals and added an assist in the team’s home win over
Gillespie High School at Lott Field
at Loveless Park Sept. 18.
The Cavaliers’ Will Shipley began the game’s scoring by putting
in a cross from Lentini. Gillespie’s
Ronnie Bertolino tied up the contest at 1-1 with a goal in the 13th
minute. Later in the opening half,
the Cavaliers took the lead for
good.
Lentini gave CHS a 2-1 advantage with by getting a cross from
Koltage Page and finding the back
of the net in the 18th minute. Page
put home a penalty kick in the 35th
minute to give the home team a
3-1 edge.
Lentini and Brayton Gibbs collected second-half goals as CHS
padded its lead as the game wore
on.
“We played a solid team game,”
coach Tim Johnson said.
With the win, Carlinville improved to 3-6-2 overall and is now
3-1 in the South Central Conference. Gillespie dropped to 2-8
overall and is now 1-3 in the SCC.
Lentini was issued a yellow card
late in the first half and sat the remainder of the half. Trenton Greff
and Bertolino were issued yellow
cards for Gillespie.
Both squads had multiple
chances to tally goals in each half,
though the goalies on each side
earned saves to prevent more scoring. Gillespie’s Chandler McDaniel had a shot on goal early in the
second goal but Carlinville goalie
Logan Turley made a diving save
to keep CHS in front 3-1. Turley finished the contest with nine
saves.
Earlier this season, Gillespie defeated Carlinville 3-0 in the Kickoff Classic.
The Cavaliers traveled to Jacksonville and Staunton earlier this
week, and are scheduled to face
Greenville in a conference road
game Thursday, Sept. 25, at 5:30
p.m.
Carlinville’s next home game is
Saturday, Sept. 27, when it hosts
Vandalia at 10 a.m.
Coach’s expectations for CHS cross country ‘sky high’
Carlinville High School’s cross
country runners began practicing for
the 2014 season the second week of
August. Most of the official practices
took place in the evening, as the team
wanted to not be limited by the extreme heat. Practice was cancelled or
pushed back a couple times due to the
weather, but most practice days saw
the team meeting at 6 p.m. or shortly
thereafter at the pavilion near the large
playground at Loveless Park.
Charlie Helton is this year’s head
coach and he is looking to continue
the trend of recent success at CHS.
“My expectations for this cross country season are sky high,” Helton said.
“I refuse to make any predictions as I
would not want to limit this group. We
have 11 girls and 9 boys. We have so
many athletes with incredible talents.
When they all realize their capabilities
it will be a very stout team on the boys
and girls side. I like our chances come
November when we have the opportunity to lace up the spikes and compete
for state medals at Detweiller Park in
Peoria.”

First meet Sept. 2
The season starts Sept. 2 with the
Carlinville Early Meet. At least nine
teams besides Carlinville are scheduled to participate in the meet at Loveless Park. CHS host the Carlinville
Invitational Tuesday, Oct. 14, and also
is scheduled to host an IHSA Class 1A
Regional Saturday, Oct. 25.

Both Carlinville’s boys and girls
teams won the South Central Conference Meet, which took place in Brighton in late October. The boys and girls
both finished ahead of Litchfield and
Greenville to take the top spot in 2013.
A year ago, senior Lea Viano earned
a top-30 finish in the state competition
(18:29) while Madden finished 74th at
19:28, a pace of 6:29.1 per mile. Viano
is now competing at Eastern Illinois
University in Charleston.
The boys team was fourth at an
IHSA Class 1A regional in Shelbyville
in 2013. C. Landon was second at
15:34 while Kreipe also finished in the
top-15. Both individuals were unable
to advance to the state competition at
Detweiler Park.
Two people applied for the head
coach of the cross country program,
and the board filled the position in
June. The previous head coach, Mike
Viano, will help out as needed as an assistant this season.
“Charlie comes to CHS with 13
years’ experience coaching cross country as well as being involved in track
and field since 1994,” CHS Principal
Pat Drew said. “His experience and
zeal of the sport is what makes him a
good fit.”

CHS runners compete in Edwardsville
Carlinville High School’s cross
country teams took part in the Edwardsville Invitational Sept. 20.
There were a combined 392 runners in the boys and girls varsity
events, plus more runners in a junior varsity competition.
Carlinville junior Cory Landon
finished the 5K in 16:35.42,
which was good for fourth place.
The boys’ overall winner was
Brydon Groves-Scott of Edwardsville, who crossed the finish line
at 16:10.07. CHS junior Nolan
Kreipe ran a 17:10.50 to finish
13th. Freshman Jason Landon was
51st overall at 18:47.87; freshman
Samuel Mock was 87th overall
at 19:46.63; freshman Grayson
Armour was 152nd at 21:37.02;
freshman Seth Evans was 190th
at 25:48.98; and sophomore Jack
Kufa was 196th at 28:29.85.
Host Edwardsville won the
boys’ competition with 54 points.
Its top five runners were in the top25. Champaign Central was second, 144; followed by St. Charles,
145. Carlinville was fourth with
212 points. Carlinville’s five runners placed in the top 80.
CHS coach Charles Helton was
impressed with the team’s showing, especially since the course
was challenging. The competition in Edwardsville was a 5K,
a slightly longer race than what
cross country typically runs.
Twenty-two teams competed
in the boys’ event while four
other schools had individuals
participate in the race. The boys’
race included 198 participants.
Southwestern’s Grant Seniker
was 65th overall with a time of
23:16.94.
Girls finish sixth
Carlinville’s girls runners also
competed in Edwardsville. Three
runners earned a medal by placing
in the top 20.
Runners for CHS included in
the team score were:
• Colleen Madden, 20:31.91,
seventh;
• Madelynn Williams, 20:56.74,
12th;
• Jacey Roper, 21:09.69, 18th;
• Mackenzie Harris, 23:44.37,
95th; and
• Leonie Gross, 23:59.58,
101st.
Also running for CHS Sept. 20
were:
• Ryleigh Gibbel, 24:39.98,
115th;
• Charlene Helton, 25:05.89,
124th;
• Stasia Nejmanowski, 26:07.73,

Nerinx Hall secured first as its
five scoring runners were in the
top 10. Edwardsville was second
(69), followed by Jacksonville
(140), Villa Duchesne (159) and
Carterville (198). Carlinville,
198 points, was ahead of John
Burroughs (226) and Litchfield
(277).
The girls’ varsity competition
had 19 teams with five runners or
more. In total, the girls race had
194 runners.
Eleven other teams participated but didn’t have enough runners compete to be included in
the scoring. Southwestern’s Erin
Laubscher finished 108th overall
at 24:17.09.

Carlinville returns to action

CHS golf seeks improvement as season progresses

Carlinville High School’s golf
team began practice Aug. 13. That
gave the team almost two full
weeks of practice before the season was supposed to start.
Logan Ridenour returns for his
third year as coach of the CHS
golf team.
Early on, the primary focus
during practice sessions has been
technique. “Many of the golfers
are in their first year on the team,
so we have been working to refine
their swings,” said Ridenour.
There are six boys and five girls
out for the team this year. “We will
be taking full squads to each boys
and girls meets,” Ridenour said.
In 2013, there were seven golfers on the team.

Mefford, Eric Ware and Colton
Winters
For the first time in school
history, CHS will be fielding a
girls’ team. Two girls who played
softball in the spring — Baylee
Hughes and Taylor Hannig — are
joining three other girls on the
team this fall.
The rest of the girls’ roster includes Ali Hurley, Kaiah Walstatter and Ashlee Wendt.
Seniors from the 2013 team that
graduated earlier this year were
Chris Callahan, Brennan Hurley,
Eric Pingolt and Ashley Starr.
Pingolt’s season finished up at the
state competition.
Before postseason competition starts in early October, there
are more than 15 matches on the
schedule for the 2014 season. Just
four matches are scheduled for the
Carlinville Country Club.
The team’s first match of the
season was set for Aug. 25 at
Shoal Creek, though that was cancelled due to extreme heat. CHS
was scheduled to take on Greenville and Southwestern Aug. 26.
The match was pushed back until Aug. 27 due to the heat, and
it appeared for a little while that
match wouldn’t get played, or
there would be at least a delay, as
threatening clouds moved into the
area. A little rain fell but it wasn’t
enough to prevent the match from
getting finished.
CHS hosted Sept. 23, against
Hillsboro, Litchfield and Mt. Olive and Thursday, Oct. 2, against
Hillsboro, East Alton and Carrollton.
The boys conference meet is
Sept. 29 at The Rail in Springfield
while the girls meet is Tuesday,
Sept. 30, in Litchfield. Last year,
Wendt won the SCC meet.
“The conference championship
is determined at the conference
meet,” Ridenour said. “We will
compete but I see Greenville and
Roxana competing for the conference title on the boys’ side. On
the girls’ side I truly believe it is
anyone’s to grab. Pana and Roxana are the front runners teamwise.”
Ridenour is seeking improvement each time the squad competes
this season. “My expectations are
for both the boys and girls teams
to improve each time we go out,”
he said. “There is not much match
experience other than Ashlee
Wendt and Lucas Mefford.”
Already this year, Wendt has
earned medalist honors by finishing with the top score at a couple
of meets, most recently Sept. 17 in
Carrollton, when she shot a 43.

one of the All Tournament Players at the 16 team Edwardsville
tournament which is an outstanding accomplishment.

owns certain real estate recently incorporated into its city limits and located on the Carlinville lake Road
and being legally described as follows:

to be the sum of FOUR THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS
($4,900.00) per acre by the written,
certified appraisal of Fred Griffiths,
a State of Illinois certified real estate appraiser.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF CARLINVILLE,
MACOUPIN COUNTY, ILLINOIS
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1: It is hereby determined that the parcel of real estate
described herein is no longer needed to serve the public interests and
is, in fact, surplus real estate and
is authorized to be sold by the staff
(Mayor and City Clerk) of the municipality as indicated herein.
SECTION 2: The proposed Option to Purchase with Abide Palliatives, LLC, a copy of said Option to
Purchase being attached as Exhibit
“A”, is hereby determined to be in
the best interests of the municipality and the terms and conditions
contained therein are hereby approved.
SECTION 3: The Mayor and the
City Clerk are authorized to execute on behalf of the City of Carlinville the said Option to Purchase
and to sign any and all documents
on behalf of the City of Carlinville
necessary to carry out the purposes of this Resolution and the said
proposed Option to Purchase.
SECTION 4: This Resolution

the Seller is able to obtain from
Macoupin Energy, LLC coming in
from the East side of the property

The exact acreage of the said
described property to be sold to the
Buyer shall be determined by a survey to be obtained and paid for by
the Seller either prior to or subsequent to the Buyer giving the Seller
notice of its intent to exercise this
Option to Purchase.
2. The term of this Option shall
commence immediately and shall
continue until March 31, 2015. The
Buyer shall have the right to extend
said Option to Purchase until March
31, 2016, by paying to the Seller
the additional sum of ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($1,000.00) on or
before March 31, 2015.
3. The purchase of the property shall be based on the sum of
$4,900.00 per acre which shall be
determined after the above-referred
to survey is completed and the
acreage of the property being sold
is determined. This amount shall
be payable as hereinafter provided
if the Buyer elects to exercise its
option. If the Buyer does exercise
its option to purchase, the initial
consideration of FIVE HUNDRED
DOLLARS ($500.00) paid for its option shall be applied to and credited
against the purchase price of the
property. Unless otherwise agreed
to in writing by the parties, any consideration paid for any extension of
the option beyond March 31, 2015,
shall not be applied and credited
against the purchase price.
4. The Buyer may exercise its
option to purchase by mailing or
delivering on or before the expiration of its option, or any extension
thereof, to Seller, written notice of
its intention to purchase the property described herein.
5. Within forty-five (45) days of
receipt of the written notice of the
Buyer’s intention to exercise its option to purchase, the Seller shall
provide the Buyer with a Commitment for title insurance on said real
estate from a reputable title insurance company, which shall show
the said property to be free and
clear of any and all defects and encumbrances, with the exception of
coal and mineral rights heretofore
conveyed or reserved of record,
easements and restrictions of record and a lien for any unpaid real
estate taxes which are not yet then
due and owing.
6. Within twenty-one (21) days
subsequent to the Seller providing the Buyer with the evidence of

the title referred to in the preceding
paragraph, the Seller shall deliver
to the Buyer or any of its assigns
or designees, against payment of
the purchase price, a good and sufficient Warranty Deed subject only
to the exceptions and/or encumbrances referred to in the preceding paragraph. Tender of the Buyer
or its designee’s valid check for the
purchase price less any amount already paid by the Buyer and to be
credited to the purchase price, shall
constitute a sufficient tender.
7. The Buyer shall have the right,
at any time during the time of this
option or any extensions thereof,
to obtain surveys of the property
described herein and to have other
engineering studies and/or tests
performed on and/or with respect
to the property described herein,
provided that the Buyer shall be
responsible for all expenses associated therewith and shall also pay
and be responsible for crop damage and any other damages done
to the property described herein.
8. If the Buyer does not exercise
this option within the time provided,
this option and the rights of the
Buyer shall automatically and immediately terminate without notice.
In the event the Buyer fails to exercise this option, the Seller shall retain the sum paid as consideration
for this option.
9. All notices provided for herein
shall be deemed to have been duly
given if and when deposited in the
United States mail properly stamped
and addressed to the party or individual for whom intended or when
delivered personally to such party
or individual.
10. During the term of this option or any extensions thereof, the
Buyer, its agents or employees
shall have the right to enter on the
property described herein at any
reasonable time for the purpose of
viewing the same and/or to perform
the surveys and/or engineering
work previously referred to herein.
11. Time is of the essence of this
agreement.
12. This agreement shall be
binding upon and shall inure to the
benefit of the parties and to their
respective heirs, successors and
assigns.

CHS continues strong play at home, handles Gillespie
Two days after dismantling
Southwestern in less than 40 minutes, Carlinville High School’s varsity volleyball team continued its
strong play at the CHS Gym with a
25-13, 25-17 defeat over Gillespie
High School in a little more than 45
minutes.
With the victory, CHS remained
unbeaten both at home (4-0) and in
the South Central Conference (5-0).
Carlinville is now 7-4 overall.
Senior Talesha Scott tallied a
team-best 10 service points. She
also contributed 6 kills. Senior
Carley Kulenkamp collected 14 assists and 7 service points. Senior
Kathleen Kelly led the team with 4
blocks. Scott, Karyssa Hinzman and
Grace Zachary each had 2 blocks.
Senior Megan Stayton led CHS with
7 kills. Kelly contributed 6 kills.
“It’s good (to get the win),”
she said CHS coach Fran Struble.
“There’s always that rivalry between Gillespie and Carlinville. It’s
just a natural rivalry, that’s there.
For Gillespie coming in here undefeated (in conference play), the girls
needed to relax, settle in and play,
and that’s what they did.”
Asked about the key to the victory against Gillespie, Struble said
it was staying relaxed. “Relaxed and
playing together, they’re doing what
they can do,” she said.
The Carlinville home match,
which was during the school’s annual spirit week, was an opportunity
for CHS to play in front of perhaps
its largest crowd all season.
The CHS student section began
a “start the buses” chant and later
proclaimed “waste of gas,” as CHS
neared an inevitable matched win in
the second game. “The crowd was
awesome,” Struble said.
Gillespie dropped to 3-1 in the
conference.
Despite the loss, Gillespie coach
Celia Jubelt was pleased with her
team’s effort. “The girls have been
working really hard,” she said. “A
loss just picks us right back up, prepares us for our next game.”
For Jubelt, a volleyball match can
really hinge on the reaction from
the crowd. “I think the crowd has
a lot to do with it, and makes it a
lot more exciting,” she said. “Every
home game we’ve had tons of fans,
and tonight (in Carlinville) we had
tons of fans out. It seems like the
Gillespie community is coming together to support the girls, which is
really amazing.”
CHS wins JV match
Carlinville’s junior varsity squad
improved to 2-4 this season with
a 25-19, 25-15 match win against
Gillespie. Lydia Albertine led CHS
with nine service points and three
aces. Taylor Wills tallied eight service points, including three aces.
Albertine and Sydney Bates each
finished with seven assists. Lauren
Sullivan finished with a team-best
five kills. Anna Chew and Lynde
Gibbs each had four kills.

golf team shot a 208 at Timber

win a three-team match Sept. 22.
Leading the way for CHS was
Ashlee Wendt. She shot a 45, which
included pars on holes 2, 7 and 8.
Baylee Hughes fired a 51, Ali Hurley shot 52 and Taylor Hannig shot
60.
The CHS girls team improved to
5-6 this season.
Boys compete in North Mac

Oak Leaf Country Club Sept. 17.

the event.

CHS seniors attend Boys State Like us on
Earlier this year several students
at Carlinville High School attended
a week-long Boys State competition in Charleston.
The boys represented different
counties and cities, learning the basics of local government. The boys
also were involved in other extracurricular activities such as band,
military, athletics and more.
The boys worked as attorneys, aldermen, city clerk and other elected
positions, and also served as election judges. Local organizations or
businesses, including the American
University and was the 79th time the
week-long event took place.
The program of training of Boys
State has been developed on the fundamental assumption that youth can
best “learn to do by doing.” In the
main, the mechanics of government
in Illinois Boys State are patterned
after the established agencies of
city, county and state government in
Illinois. For all practical purposes,
Illinois Boys State may be regarded
as a mythical fifty-first state with
a constitution, a body of law and
practices peculiar to it alone.
Legion, Lions Club, Plaza Trucking sponsored the seven individuals
— Elijah Barber, C.J. Meno, Drew
Sandino, Max Chapman, R.C. Kirk,
Joeb Easterday and Conner McClain — that attended the event
from Carlinville.
The CHS seniors gathered Sept.
10 at the American Legion for a
fried chicken dinner and to participate in a Legion meeting.
The Boys State program began in
Illinois in 1934 and was soon put into
operation in all 50 states. This year’s

Cavaliers prey on Panthers, 43-15
Looking to rebound after its first
loss of the season, Carlinville High
School’s varsity football team used an
efficient passing game and sure-tackling defense on its way to a convincing
43-15 victory over visiting Pana High
School Sept. 19 at CHS Field.
CHS built a 30-0 halftime lead, and
increased its advantage to 36-0 through
three quarters before Pana managed to
get into the scoring column with a 77yard touchdown reception early in the
fourth quarter.
The Cavaliers piled up more than
600 yards on offense, and head coach
Chad Easterday thought the pace of
the team’s offense helped in the home
win. “I thought our tempo tonight with
our new offensive system this year, we
were able to run and throw, and move
at a high speed,” C. Easterday said. “I
thought that we did our best when we
were moving at that pace.”
Senior quarterback Joeb Easterday
completed 12 of 20 passes for 268
yards and 3 touchdowns. The yardage
through the air was a career high.
Joeb Easterday credited the play
of the offensive line, which enabled
him to find open receivers downfield.
“Without them you don’t have the
time to drop back and throw, and our
receivers were real crisp tonight with
their routes. When the play broke
down, they came back to the ball.”
Carlinville’s defense set the tone
by forcing a three-and-out on Pana’s
first possession of the game. Moments
later, sophomore Jacob Dixon was in
the end zone for his first of four touchdowns on the night.
Dixon said his first touchdown reception got the CHS offense off to a
great start. “I felt it was really key,
and made a difference in the game,”
Dixon said. “It really gave us the momentum.”
Carlinville’s third-quarter touchdown — another score by Dixon —
gave the home team a 36-0 lead. Pana
got on the board with a long touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Jacob Dixon collected 70 yards rushing and two
touchdowns on nine carries, plus he
had five catches for 144 yards and
two more touchdowns. Dixon also
a 26-yard pass to sophomore Blake
Richardson. Senior Kinney Myles
compiled 145 rushing yards on 18
carries, and also contributed a 50yard touchdown reception.
“I think the key was being able to
pass and run efficiently, and our de-

For Dixon, the key for success on
defense is communication and being
sure tacklers. “Communication, we
had to talk to each other, tell everyone
where receivers were, we just had to
really tackle well,” Dixon said.
Pana finished the contest with 11
first downs, though many of those
came after CHS was up by more than
30 points. In the opening quarter, it
appeared the only way the Panthers
were able to move the chains was via
Carlinville penalties. For the game,
the Cavaliers were flagged eight
times for 90 yards. “We had some
early penalties that kept their drives
alive,” Dixon said. “That kind of
thing we need to fix, work on as we
move on.”
“Overall, it was a great big win for
us, to get to 3-1 and push through to
the second half of our season,” he
said.
In years past, the matchup with
Pana has been closer, with the game’s
outcome not being determined until the final quarter. C. Easterday
was asked why that wasn’t the case
this time. “I think it’s the versatility
of our offense,” he said. “As a defense, you’ve got to cover sideline to
sideline, end zone to end zone with
us. We have a lot of speed, and our
kids have bought into that system. It
makes a big difference when you no
longer can cover tackle to tackle but
sideline to sideline.”
Pana quarterback Rhett Zahradka
aired the ball out several times down
the field, though he wasn’t able to
connect with receivers often enough
to make a difference. “I thought our
(defensive backs) did a pretty good
job for the most part. They got burned
a couple times but our front line got
pressure and made (throwing) very
difficult for him. He had to be accurate, and he wasn’t.”
Asked what the halftime message
was when CHS was on top 30-0 and
was scheduled to get the opening kickoff of the second half, C. Easterday
said there were things to work on. “We
wanted to make sure we were covering our scouting report,” he said.
CHS wanted to get a running clock,
which means a 40-point lead. That
didn’t happen Friday night, as Pana
cut the lead to 36-8 in the final quarter.
“Overall, we played really solid,” J.
Easterday said.

Myles and Ben Rogers each finished
with two receptions in the home win.
The Cavaliers’ tackling was a key
part in building the large lead, according to C. Easterday.
Carlinville rushed the ball 43 times
for 313 yards. Myles, J. Easterday, and
Gwillim each all at least one carry of
25 yards or longer. Add in the passing
of nearly 300 yards, and the total offense for CHS was at 607 yards.
“I think the key to the game was
defensively we tackled very, very
well,” he said. “Coming off the
Greenville game, we have that lull
sometimes, and we didn’t have that
tonight and that’s a great credit to our
kids and our coaching staff for a good
prep week.”
Dixon and Broedy Long both led
the defense with six solo tackles. Zach
Rogers contributed four tackles. Long
was credited with 1.5 sacks and also
recovered a fumble while Gwillim had
a sack.

Each box contains 25 shells. Each
round of the competition allows for 25
shots. At a singles event, the competitors go four rounds for 100 shots. The
championship matches are 200 singles.
Competitors shoot 25 shots four times
in the morning, then do it again in the
afternoon for a total of 200. Obtaining
25-straight occurs when all traps are
shot in one round. Getting 50-straight
is 50 continuous birds in that total of
100. This doesn’t have to be the first
50; it could be the second and third
round.
His first year, he got a 25 straight
once. Since that time, he’s added 75
straight and 100 straight at the state
competition. The next step for him is
to get to 200 straight.
R. England’s next competition
will be in October at the Lake of the
Ozarks.
Competitions take about an hour per
event with usually three events per day
which typically takes all day. In singles
and doubles, they stand 16 yards from
the thrower. In handicap, it is 18 to 27
depending on an individual’s handicap.
R. England’s handicap is now 23.5.
Participants can gain yardage by shooting a 96 out of 100 or better.
Holding his shotgun, Rowdy England displays several of the
medals he’s won in recent trapshooting contests.
Rowdy participates in a league on
Tuesday evenings during the spring,
summer and fall.
The Illinois competition takes place
at Brittany Park near Bunker Hill. The
Englands also have traveled to compete in other national events in Missouri and Ohio.
For now, the trapshooting is a hobby,
though the ultimate goal is to eventu-
ally use his talents to get a scholarship
to a college or university.
Just how far can one go in trapshooting? Sporting clays are the “new golf,”
according to Rowdy’s father, Eric England, and skeet shooting is an Olympic
sport.
Rowdy is the oldest son of Eric and
Nikki England. He has two younger
sisters, Stormy and Willow.
