Blue Valley Quilters Guild - May 2016
Message from the President
Spring, for me it’s the season of distractions! I want to work in the yard, get out on my bicycle, walk the
dog, and, of course, quilt! It’s not that I just want to work in the yard; I want to see what’s new at the
nursery. I want to see what’s going happening on the bike trail – what’s been changed, what birds have
come to town that aren’t in my backyard, what flowers are staring to pop up. Not only do I want to walk
my dog; I want to see what everyone is doing in the neighborhood. And with quilting – I want to get to all
of those projects that I’ve dreamt up all winter long (I wonder why I have more than my fair share of
UFOs!) and see what new fabrics are out in the shops. I love this whole sense of renewal thing!
In keeping with this sense of renewal, our May meeting is all about finding something new. The program
committee has put together a Ruler Roundup. Surely, you will take away something that will inspire you to
try something new or stir your enthusiasm to get that ruler out that you tucked away and kind of forgot
about (speaking for myself here). So, hopefully, all of this talk of spring doesn’t jinx the weather and you’re
reading this with a layer of sleet on the ground – we are in Kansas after all.
See You Soon – Trisch
The Blue Valley Quilters Guild is dedicated to preserving and teaching the
fine art of quilting.
We welcome all newcomers as well as experienced quilters to be part of
this guild.

Thank you to everyone for the
cheery churn dash blocks! It was
such a lovely surprise to receive
them at the April meeting, and it
has been so much fun to look at all of them. I love all the combinations, and have
enjoyed starting to play around with arrangements. I really appreciate it, and look
forward to sewing them all together. Thanks again!

PDQ COMMITTEE (Projects done by Quilters)
PDQ Process: A form (green sheet with PDQ at the top) is available at every meeting that can be filled out with information
regarding your request for special projects assistance other than what is already on our monthly docket.

Sit & Stitch Workshops
Sit & Stitch meets most every 2nd & 4th
Thursdays of each month at Rose Estates,
127th & Antioch. Each Thursday there is either a workshop led by a BVQG member or a
time for members to come and sew on their
own projects. Arrival time is 9:30 with workshops starting at 10 AM. Participants bring
their lunch. BVQG members are always welcome to come even if they are not signed up
for a workshop. SIt & Stitch is a good way to get acquainted with other members.
If you have questions concerning Sit & Stitch please contact Wilma Lamfers,
[email protected]
Two workshops on the "Sew Together Bag" led by Ibby Rollert, Sandi Maglicano
& Judy Brennan are now completed. Look for a table full of these bags at the
May meeting.
Thursday, April 25th Sit & Stitch will be a combination of three projects.
At 10 AM we will be presented with a "mystery project". If you
want to participate, please bring two 10" coordinating fabrics and
a piece of batting 10" square. You'll need your sewing machine,
thread to go with your fabric and your usual sewing supplies
It's also a UFO sewing day. The June meeting is the last time you can show
your finished UFOs. The winning ticket will be drawn at the July meeting.
Chairwoman Connie Zwego is awarding tickets for your attendance if you are
working on one of your UFOs.
We'll be finishing some work on the muff lap quilts and sometime during the day
we will make the presentation to the Rose Estates staff. There are still 10 kits to
be made so let me know if you are interested in helping get these completed.
We'll probably reach 70 quilts when all are finished. Thanks to all who have graciously helped in making this "pay it forward" project a success.
Thursday, May 12th Cynthia Coleman will be leading a workshop in learning how to use
the "Quick Curve Ruler" in making the "Urban Nine Patch" wall hanging. The May 12th
workshop is full - the second workshop date is June 9th. The workshop fee is $5.00. For
this workshop you must also purchase the ruler and pattern. Signups continue at the May
meeting for the June workshop.
Watch for new workshops to be announced. We're getting ready for a paper piecing workshop and a quilt
as you go project. Please let me know if you have ideas for future workshops. Questions please contact
Wilma Lamfers, [email protected]@gmail.com.

We had a huge turn out for the April Meeting - so let's celebrate us!
Membership would like to encourage all members to attend
meetings wearing their name tags. New members need for us to be
visible and sometimes we need to be reminded of our names as
well. Purchasing an ugly paper name tag is always an option - but if
you have one - wear it! It can be a church, other organization or
hospital ID bracelet OR you could be creative and make a name tag
that will dazzle us with your originality!
But please "name yourself" during our Blue Valley Quilters Guild
Meetings- so we can meet and greet in style! (It might even be possible that those wearing a name tag would receive a bonus sweet
treat too!)
Membership Committee
Jackie Johnson, Marsha Cahill, Kim Mapes
The numbers keep climbing. For April we sent out a total of twenty. Ten went to the
church, and ten went to Safe Home. That gets us to ninety- eight quilts sent out since the
beginning of the year. This could be a record. With the thirty quilts sent out for binding, we
should have quite a few returned in May.
Egg is on my face. There were two of you who let me know
either the cutting was inaccurate or the batting pieces weren't large enough. My apologies. If you find your kit not what
it's supposed to be please let me know. My mistakes may
make me cranky but I'd much rather take it back and make
it right than have you suffer.

The Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival Plexiglas Challenge
We have GOOD news and BAD news....
The GOOD....We have had an overwhelming response to the Plexiglas's Festival
Challenge using the colors of the Festival.
The BAD....The confusion of what are the colors of the Festival.
As we did list the colors we thought would best describe the colors of the Festival used on
the card and social media, we would hope you would interpret these colors. If we said
"Royal Blue", this would mean colors close to this. Raspberry, would mean close to
this (on one side of it's wheel house) ...goldenrod, the same...always err on the side
of BRIGHT. Green...several greens are represented on our Logo. We do want to stay
within the colors on the LOGO. Purple, NO.....Red....NO....and so on.
Please err on the side of BRIGHT ! When we get closer to the event, we will be assembling a Challenge Judging Committee. They will be the ones having the final say as to
what makes the cut. So as for now, please stay within the wheel-house of the Festival
Colors....and THANK YOU for the great response.
Also, one more thing....ALL PEOPLE ASSEMBLING THE QUILT MUST BE MEMBERS
OF A PARTICIPATING KCRQF GUILD AND BE LISTED ON THE LABEL.....THE
QUILTER DOES NOT NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF A PARTICIPATING GUILD!

M.O.M.'s - Mentoring Of Members
The MOM's committee will have sign up sheets at each meeting for those that would like to be a mentor
and those that would like to have a member assigned to them.
Welcome bags are also given to new members as they join.
Welcome to our new member that joined in April,

Be sure to look for her at the next meeting and get acquainted.
2016 Opportunity Quilt
Our opportunity quilt has been out in the community
several times in April. Twelve volunteers represented us at
Quilted Memories and Quilters' Haven during shop hops
and sold lots of tickets. "It's a Scrappy Universe" will be
displayed at Starlight QG, QG of Greater Kansas City and
Eudora Quilting Bees) and we'll reciprocate by showing
their opportunity quilts at a couple of our guild
meetings. You'll love seeing these quilts and I know you'll
welcome these fellow quilters. Buy tickets on them, if you
desire. And, of course, buy tickets on ours and give them
(or sell them) to your friends. Suggestions for other places
to show our quilt are welcome.

Quilt Angel Nominations
Who has made a difference in your life as a quilter? Who has taught
you something new, or made your life easier and more fun? Who in
the Guild has done something special for you? Think also of the many
board members and special people who make our guild meetings
unique and fun. Did you know it takes LOTS of people to make each
of our meetings fun, informative, and educational? All of these people
are potential “angels”.
I will be passing out slips of paper at our May meeting for you to put
the name of someone special you would like to nominate as our next
quarterly quilt angel. This is your chance to thank that special person.
So, please think of the name of the person you would like to write on
the slip of paper.
Our quarterly Quilt Angel will be recognized at the June meeting.

Up Close Continued
To most people the Opportunity Quilt is simply an annual guild fundraiser. A guild member,
or group of members, makes the quilt, the guild sells chances and on the first Tuesday in
December someone is given the quilt. Having worked on this year’s Opportunity Quilt, “It’s
a Scrappy Universe,” I know first-hand that it’s more than a guild fundraiser.
I was given the opportunity to work on the quilt after presenting the board with an idea for
a wonky star quilt. Fortune smiled upon me when Becky Robbins asked if our bee, Kathy’s
Kut-Ups, could be of assistance. Working as a team, our bee had the opportunity to enjoy fellowship, learn new techniques and make a quilt showcasing our particular talents.
We used the liberated/wonky star technique presented by Gwen Marston in “Liberated Quiltmaking II.” Her book is
available in the guild’s library if you’d like to learn more about her quilting style. Wonky stars are a very forgiving
block for a quilt constructed by a group of people. Bee blocks might vary in size and construction, so we decided to
make them slightly larger and have one person trim them all to size. We wanted to have 35 stars, representing the
35th Anniversary of the guild. Three stars have smaller stars in the center, and the remaining stars
needed were formed in the sashing and cornerstones. The quilt gave us the opportunity to incorporate one of the techniques Barb Eikmeier presented when she spoke to the guild last year.
After we decided upon the design of the quilt, it was time to pick out the fabric. Shirlee Viera, the
late Kathy Schissel and I had a lovely afternoon picking out fabric at Quilters Haven. We had the
opportunity to take two fairly different focus fabrics and design the color scheme of the quilt together. One was dark and very symmetrical while the other was lighter, with a softer floral design.
They shared a few common colors, and away we went picking out jewel-toned fabric for the stars
and appliquéd border. For the background we used a large variety of gray fabrics.
After we had all our fabric, we spent time during bee cutting the fabric and kitting the stars to sew
on our own. We worked on the sashing and wonky saw-tooth border as a group and the talented Shirlee Viera hand
appliquéd the border. Becky Robbins keep us on track with the math, and Mary Strege kept everything straight and
flat with her precision cutting. Priscilla Alberg was a wiz with the sashing and Nikki McDonald made sure our borders
were scrappy and wonky. Kim Mapes, Elizabeth Zaylor and Ibby Rollert were also with us on the journey, making
blocks, borders and binding.
After it was all pieced, I had the opportunity to quilt our scrappy universe, and was so thankful I had such good
friends who were more than willing to make our quilt. Being a part of a guild like the Blue Valley Quilters Guild has
benefits beyond measure, and the friendships formed over a stack of fabric, needles and thread is one of them. “It’s
a Scrappy Universe” is a stellar representation of that friendship. Every quilt has a story, and I’m happy to have had
the opportunity to share this story with you.
