Question of the Week Question for Children: What does it mean when Jesus says “the last will be first”? Question for Youth: How will the Lord respond to you when you ask him to open the door of heaven? Question for Adults: How can you strive to enter through the narrow gate? Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time A W ORD FROM O UR P ASTOR QUEENSHIP OF MARY: Last Monday, Aug. 15, we celebrated the Solemnity of Mary’s Assumption. This Monday, Aug. 22, we celebrate the Queenship of Mary. As I mentioned in my bulletin remarks last weekend, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the dogma of Mary’s Assumption into heaven in 1950. Four years later, on Oct. 11, 1954, with the issuance of his encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam (To the Queen of Heaven), he followed up with the creation of a new feast in honor of Mary’s queenship. The notion of honoring Mary as queen is not something that Pope Pius XII pulled “out of the blue.” Mary as queen does have scriptural roots. At the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth, Mary’s kinswoman, called Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all mysteries of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with Jesus. Her queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. If we take a look at Church history, we see that by the fourth century St. Ephrem (feast day on June 9), one of the Church fathers, referred to Mary as “Lady” and “Queen.” Church hymns from the 11th through the 13th centuries address Mary as queen. One hymn we modern Christians are quite familiar with is Hail Holy Queen. Also, numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship. When Pope Pius XII established the feast of Mary’s queenship, he originally set it on the date of May 31. However, the feast is a logical followup to the Assumption. So, when Pope Paul the VI revised the liturgical calendar in 1969, he moved feast day to Aug. 22, the octave day of the Assumption. Pope Paul made this change to emphasize the close bond between Mary’s queenship and her glorification in body and soul next to her Son. The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium (Light of the Nations), states that “Mary was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of the universe, that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son.” (Lumen Gentium, 59) RCIA—RITE OF CHRISITIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Our RCIA program at Saint Matthew will begin in September, and I would like to give a little “plug” for this program. The RCIA is the Catholic Church’s program for those interested in the Catholic faith or for those who think they might want to join the Catholic Church. Jeni Lengerich, our Faith Formation Director, will be overseeing the RCIA program this year. If you know of anyone interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, or if you have a non-Catholic spouse who might be interested, or if you have never received the Sacrament of Confirmation and would like to complete your Christian initiation, please extend an invitation to find out more. Please see the article in this bulletin for details. SCRIPTURE STUDY: While I am at it, let me give a push for our scripture study on the Acts of the Apostles. Registration is this weekend after all Masses. The program begins in September, and you will have a choice of a Tuesday evening session or a Thursday morning session. Please see the article in this bulletin for dates and contact information if you are interested but did not get a chance to register this weekend. MISSION APPEAL: Let me also give a “plug” for the mission appeal will take place on the weekend of Aug. 27-28 on behalf of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Mercy (DMMM). As some of you may know, the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Mercy are based in Nigeria and do mission work at various places in the world, including our own Archdiocese of Indianapolis. I encourage your generosity with the sisters in their mission work for the Church. We need to keep in mind as members of the Church we are all responsible for the Church’s mission work. If we cannot be in the field, we are certainly called by Jesus to share of our resources to help the Church in proclaiming the Good News to the World. Please see the article in this weekend’s bulletin. ON VACATION: I remind all that I will be on a short vacation all this week and will be returning the weekend of Aug. 27-28. May God bless all with a wonderful week! Let pray for a sunny week, since we had so much rain last week! Fr. Nick Women’s Club Meets on Aug. 25 The next meeting of the Women’s Club will be on Thursday, Aug. 25. It is a 20-part study that we are splitting in two. First 10-week session start date: Choose either Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. or Thursday, Sept. 15, at 9 a.m. at Saint Matthew. Second 10-week session start date: Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. or Thursday, Jan. 12, at 9 a.m. Acts is a story of hope. It’s the story of how a few Christians empowered by the Holy Spirit were chosen to bring Christ and the Good News to the ends of the earth. They taught as Christ did. They performed miracles as he did. They faced secular forces, internal strife, hostile crowds, and despite all of this, they brought the kingdom of God to a broken world and the love of God to the hearts of men. Acts will enrich your faith and rekindle your love for Christ as you live the lives of his first disciples. Cost/Registration: $30 includes material for both sessions. Registration will be held after all Masses on Aug. 20/21. For more information or if you missed registration at church, contact Leslie Kerr, [email protected], (501) 590-6673, or at home at (317) 823-0112. Parish-Wide Novena for Saint Matthew Continues Spiritual Life Commission members request all to participate in a parish-wide novena that continues until Aug. 22. Here is the novena: Aug. 21, 2016 Sunday Morning Family Faith Formation The more that you read, The more things will know. The more that you learn, The more places that you will go! I Can Read with My Eyes Shut! What is our duty as Catholic parents? The Catechism of the Catholic Church #2221-2231 states that as parents, we are responsible for educating our children in the ways of the Catholic Faith. CCC #2226 says, “Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God.” What is the duty of the parish? Catechism of the Catholic Church #2226 further says, “The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents.” Sooooooo…….As a parish, it is our responsibility to provide Religious Education Programming (either in a parish or school setting) and as parents, it is our obligation to make sure our children participate in it. We will be discussing Pope Francis’ book, The Name of God Is Mercy, on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the parish conference room. Pope Francis addresses all humanity in an intimate and personal dialogue. At the center of this book is the subject closest to his heart—mercy—which has long been the cornerstone of his faith and is now the central teaching of his papacy. These pages resonate with a desire to reach all those people who are looking for meaning in life, a road to peace and reconciliation, and the healing of physical and spiritual wounds. Please send Sister Jean an e-mail ([email protected]) or contact her directly when you see her to register for this discussion. This book can be purchased at Fatima Retreat House or amazon.com. They want to teach farming/gardening to our sister parish in Haiti. Please contact Jan Baele, [email protected]. Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time RCIA Begins Soon If you’re curious about the Catholic faith or have thought about becoming a Catholic, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program is for you. Were you raised in another faith tradition? Were you raised without any particular religious affiliation? Were you baptized in the Catholic faith but received little or no religious education? Are you a Catholic who has been away from the Church and wishes to return informed and empowered by your faith? What is RCIA? “RCIA” or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process where the participant learns about what it means to be a member of the Catholic Christian faith. RCIA does not just focus on knowing about the teachings of the Catholic Church but also Rite of Christian Initiation for Children What is RCIC? Similar to RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults), RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) is an ancient rite of the church for children between the ages of 7 and 14 who have not been baptized or who are baptized outside the Roman Catholic faith and have not received their 1st Holy Communion. RCIC is open to parishioners and non-parishioners in need of preparation for these sacraments and for reception into the Roman Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Whether your family is just entering the church, is returning after time away, have decided as a family to delay the children’s sacramental preparation, or any other circumstance, all are welcome. What does RCIC involve? The children and families who choose to participate in RCIC will belong to a group of children and families who will form a community as they grow in relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church. Together, the children and families are introduced to a life of faith in the Church and the meaning in the celebration of the sacraments. The children and families will First Reconciliation & First Communion The Program. Our program at Saint Matthew consists of five parents/child gatherings to prepare for Reconciliation and seven parents/child gatherings and a parents/child retreat day to prepare for First Eucharist. Parents are the primary catechists during this formation process. The parents/child gatherings are meant to be interactive, informative, and interesting. The goal of these gatherings is to coach parents as they prepare their child to receive the sacraments, and together the family develops a closer relationship to God and one another. There is a book that will be sent home for use by the parents and child, and the gatherings and retreat will build on the information supplied in the books. Babysitting is available at all gatherings. During each gathering, we hear important stories from the Bible, have special prayer opportunities, time to share faith with one another as a emphasizes the lived experiences of Catholic Christian people. Each session focuses on an aspect of Catholic Christian beliefs and provides an opportunity for discussion. The process draws on the model of adult initiation from the “catechumenate” (Greek for “someone under instruction”) in the ancient church in a series of carefully planned stages; marked by liturgical rites in the presence of the whole community as the adult participants join us in a continuing and deepening conversion into faith and discipleship. What is the process? Sessions will be weekly beginning in September and culminate with the full reception into the Catholic Church on Easter Vigil Mass on April 15, 2017. How do I get started? Please contact Jeni Lengerich at (317) 297-4297, x2215, or [email protected]. get to know their catechists and members of the parish, including the priest and members of pastoral life of our community.
