Riders of all ages take to the streets to see creative collaborations in sound, video, song and photography from the mountains down to the edge of the sea.

Gorgeous sunsets, unblemished night skies,
bountiful gardens, and the endless creativity
and passion of its residents. North Shore is a
source of inspiration, a poem. North Shore’s
verses are its people and their stories, and the
work and imagination they invest every day into
making their lives and their community a place
of inspiration.
Last November, the North Shore Arts
Committee, in collaboration with KDI Artistic
Directors Shannon Scrofano and Evelyn
Serrano, organized the “Ambulant Poetry
Project.” The Committee partnered with local
North Shore residents, and with artists, writers
and engineers from four universities: College
of the Desert, California State University
Long Beach (CSULB), University of Southern
California (USC), and the California Institute of
the Arts (CalArts). This day-long event had as its
goal to reveal the poetry of North Shore, through
a showcase of North Shore residents’ stories, art
and community spirit. Event participants joined
guided bike tours of North Shore, and enjoyed
many artistic experiences along the way.
Our bike tour left from the home of Isabel and
Alfredo, our event hosts, after enjoying some pan
dulce and coffee, and experiencing the video and
sound installation about the senses of the region,
created by North Shore’s Daniel Morando and
Jose Rodriguez of CSULB.
Eduardo of the Desert Riderz Bike Co-op led
the way for the many bikes and cars carrying
audience from North Shore and beyond. Both
tours were MC’d by Omar Guardado, with
music from Jose Aragon.
Our first stop was a visit to Vista Point, on one
of the hills next to the aqueduct. We enjoyed the
photography installation created by resident Jose
Nolasco in collaboration with Brittany Blouch
from CSULB and his daughter Judith Nolasco.
From the top we enjoyed the view of the Salton
Sea, the mountains, and the future site of the
North Shore park.

NORTH SHORE
PARK UPDATE
The living room of the Hernandez household was transformed by Daniel Morando and Jose Rodriguez into an
environment to experience the five senses of Noth Shore.
Back on our bikes, we coasted down 70th,
enjoying the large photo works by Adrianna
Mota, installed along 70th street, in collaboration
with Narges Noroozi from CSULB.
After that, we visited the USC engineering
students who have been helping to design the
playground section of the new North Shore park
after several meetings with community residents.
Celia’s home was our next stop. At her
home we visited her beautiful garden and had
a delicious lemonade she made with lemons
from her backyard. When walking through her
garden one could hear Celia’s pre-recorded
voice, coming from speakers installed on the
trees. Working with Stephanie Morales of the
College of the Desert, Celia developed the idea
of talking trees, telling their stories to audiences
as they walk through the grove of trees and
unique plants surrounding her home, cultivated
through years of care and attention.

a recording and speaker device carrying Celia’s voice
through the garden.
Next, our tour visited the North Shore Yacht
Club, and an art exhibition created by Alfredo
Hernandez and Brooke Jacobovitz. We also
enjoyed the beautiful voices of several North
Shore residents who sang with CalArts students
Kat Altman and Brooke Jacobovitz. Our last
tour enjoyed the spectacular sunset at the edge
of the shore.
Back at Isabel and Alfredo’s home we enjoyed
Maria’s delicious homemade tamales and salad,
and, of course, everyone’s company.
A very special thanks to everyone who attended the tours
and made this event possible.

Over the last few months we have been
working with community members to refine
the park site plan with technical expertise from
our team of landscape architects, architects,
and engineers. As a result, we have refined the
building and landscape designs and have created
a plan that can be submitted to acquire the
necessary permits for building the project.
We are excited to announce that on
January 14, 2015 the board of Desert
Recreation
District
approved
the
schematic plans for the North Shore
park project. This approval allows us to
further develop the plans through the design
development and the construction document
phase. We have submitted to the Coachella
Valley Water District for hydraulic modeling
for the North Shore project. We are currently
waiting to hear from CVWD on whether we
will have sufficient water to meet the needs of
the project that include bathrooms, drinking
fountains, irrigation, and splash pad.

DOWNKAST: ROCKING OUT IN NORTH SHORE

FEBRUARY • MARCH • APRIL
DownKast was just an idea when my
friends and I were in elementary school.
We had no idea how to play any kind of
instrument, but we were determined to
make it happen no matter what. Somehow
our lives as musicians started when we got
together with our instruments and tried to
figure out how to use the darn things!
As the years went by, we slowly got better
and better, eventually getting to a level where
we played at many backyard shows across
the Coachella Valley. We also played at
many battle of the bands, where we took a
couple of trophies. Now we are all grown up
and sometimes find it hard to get together to
jam out because of our busy life schedules,
but that spark in us will never die out, and
straight to the top is where we’re going.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Juan Carlos “Chuck” Ortega, a local artist
from the Coachella Valley, founded his film
company Chuck Films, in 2008. Ortega is a
graduate from the Los Angeles Film School.
Chuck keeps a busy schedule, dedicating his
time to high and low budget productions. He
works on films, videos, and graphics locally and
out of town. Chuck Films has no boundaries
and no borders. Chuck’s high-quality sound,
high-definition video, remarkable effects, and
creativity have opened many doors for his
company. His credits as director and producer
include work with well-known bands such as
Banda Recoditos, Banda El Recodo and Los
Tucanes De Tijuana. He has also worked
with many up-and-coming artists such as
Clika Los Necios, J Patron, Erika Vidrio, and
La Atraxion just to name a few. Juan Carlos
Ortega also creates commercials for local
businesses featured in television networks
Televisa, Telemundo, and Univision. Ortega is
also a family-orientated individual, with high
family values and morals.
When asked about how he has accomplished
his success he says:
“Work hard, focus on your potential, move
forward and never stop.”
We are honored and proud to have Mr. Juan
Carlos Ortega as a person and as a successful
professional in our community.

Moving Forward
Together: North Shore
Park Leadership meeting
celebrates over a year of
community work.
On January 28th, Kounkuey Design Initiative’s
Chelina Odbert, Jessica Bremner and Jessie
Heneghan met with a group of North Shore
resident-leaders who have been highly influential
in the project’s initial phases, and continued
success up to date. The North Shore leaders
represent various community and programmatic
groups related to the park, including Desert
Riderz bike cooperative, the North Shore Art
Committee, North Shore Delicias Laguna Azul
Market, ICUC, and others.
At the meeting, the various group members/
leaders came together to discuss their collective
achievements and proudest moments, and also
to look at some of the challenges they have
faced, and can foresee up ahead. The list of
accomplishments included the publication of
North Shore’s own newspaper El Progreso,
the organization of many arts events and
projects, the founding of the North Shore
Art Committee and North Shore Cleanup
Crew, and the opening of the market Delicias
Laguna Azul. It was a lively discussion taking
into account North Shore’s progress and
movement as a community, looking forward to
the future success of the park and continued
programmatic activities.
The group agreed that there is a need to form
a type of community development committee
and for more North Shore residents to be
involved in all aspects of the North Shore Park
project and other North Shore advocacy, such
as a cleaner Salton Sea and improvements to
the Sun Bus. If you would like to be involved,

North Shore’s first ever resident-led community market, is open for business every first
Saturday of the month at the North Shore
Yacht Club parking lot from 2 to 6pm.

Desert Riderz’ Bike Repair Shop
Does your bike need some attention? Bring
it to the Desert Riderz’ Bike Repair Shop!
All repairs are done free-of-charge by
North Shore youth who are part of the Desert
Riderz Bike co-op. The youth attended
trainings for more than a year with Carlos
Hernandez, Kounkuey Design Initiative’s
Urban Planning Intern. The collective will
also lead upcoming local efforts to establish a
bike lending program in North Shore.
Desert Riderz’ Bike Repair Shop is open
every Wednesday, from 4 to 5pm on
Seaside Avenue.

OPINION

A couple of years back we started a petition
for a park and a school here in North Shore.
We received 150 signatures, but when the
county supervisor came, nobody showed up to
the meeting. People here in North Shore ask
for a lot of things but never show up for the
meetings regarding North Shore, and that was
discouraging for me. So now with a new group
of people, things have started to move forward.
I have been a resident of North Shore for 15
years. I have made it our goal to establish a
new school, community park and our own zip
code.

DELICIAS LAGUNA AZUL MARKET OPENS TO THE PUBLIC
Delicas Laguna Azul had it’s Grand Opening on
December 7th at the North Shore Yacht Club. Vendors from
all over North Shore came together to sell their delicious food
products and unique clothing and accessories. There was
music, a dance performance and fun for all ages of the family.
The group of North Shore vendors had been hard at work
for the last 18 months participating in small business training
to create their business plans and prepare for the Delicias
market opening. Delicias Laguna Azul takes place monthly
outside at the Yacht Club on the first weekend of the month
from 12 to 4pm.
Manualidades and other crafts are popular at the market.
Some of the products sold at the market, that you can look
forward to enjoying at the next one in February are: tamales
with different fillings, enchiladas, tacos, hot dogs, tostadas,
menudo, empanadas, pozoles, nachos, raspados, champurrado,
homemade yogurt and fruit, tostitos locos, Herbalife products,
and non-food items including clothing, accessories, and
manualidades. We look forward to seeing you at the next
Delicias Laguna Azul market on Sunday February 8th from
12 to 4pm at the Yacht Club parking lot. In addition to the
market, there will also be the North Shore resident-artists’ art
exhibition, as well as music and dance to enjoy! See you then!
There’s more to the market than delicious food and drink! Clothes, accessories and crafts are also in abundance.

Preciosos atardeceres, estrellados cielos
nocturnos, generosos jardines, y la infinita
creatividad y pasión de sus residentes. North
Shore es una fuente de inspiración, un poema.
Los versos de North Shore son su gente y sus
historias, y el trabajo y la imaginación que ellos
invierten en su comunidad.
El pasado Noviembre, el Comité de Arte de
North Shore, en colaboración con las directoras
artísticas de KDI Shannon Scrofano and Evelyn
Serrano, organizaron el Proyecto de Poesía
Ambulante. El Comité colaboró además con
residentes, y con artistas, escritores e ingenieros
de cuatro universidades: College of the Desert,
CalState Long Beach, University of Southern
California, y California Institute of the Arts. Este
evento de un día tuvo como objetivo primordial
revelar a los participantes la poesía de North
Shore, a través de una muestra de historias, arte,
y espíritu comunitario de los residentes. Los
participantes del evento se unieron a un tour de
North Shore en bicicleta, y disfrutaron muchas
experiencias artísticas durante el tour.

tuvieron Omar Guardado como maestro de
ceremonias, con música de José Aragon.
Nuestra primera parada fue nuestra visita a
Vista Point, una de las colinas localizadas cerca
del acueducto. Disfrutamos de la instalación
de fotografía creada por Jose Nolasco y su hija
Judith Nolasco con Brittany Blouch de CSULB.
En lo alto de la colina disfrutamos de la vista
del Salton Sea, las montañas, y del lugar donde
estará el parque de North Shore.
Nos montamos en las bicis y disfrutamos de
las fotos de Adrianna Mota, instaladas a lo largo
de la calle 70.
Luego visitamos a los estudiantes de ingeniería
de USC, quienes nos están ayudando a diseñar
la sección del parque de juegos del nuevo parque
de North Shore, luego de varias juntas de diseño
con los residentes.
La casa de Celia fue nuestra próxima parada.
En su casa visitamos su bello jardín y tomamos
una deliciosa limonada preparada con limones
de su patio. Cuando caminábamos por su jardín
se podía escuchar la voz de Celia saliendo de
Estudiantes de USC comparten sus diseños para el patio
de recreo, con los contribuciones de los talleres con los
residentes.
Escuchar a los árboles cuentan sus historias a través de
un reproductor electrónico especial, llevando la voz de
Celia en todo el jardín.

Durante los últimos meses, trabajamos con los
miembros de la comunidad en refinar el plano
del sitio del parque usando la experiencia técnica
de nuestros arquitectos, arquitectos de paisaje,
e ingenieros. Como resultado de este proceso,
tenemos el diseño de los edificios y del paisaje más
refinados, hemos diseñado un plan que puede ser
presentado a los departamentos necesarios para
recibir los permisos de construcción del parque.
Es con mucha emoción que les
anunciamos que el 14 de Enero de 2015
la junta directiva del Desert Recreation
District aprobó los planos esquemáticos
del proyecto del parque de North Shore.
Esta aprobación nos permite avanzar los diseños
del parque hasta los fases de desenvolvimiento
de diseño y la creación de documentos de
construcción. Además, presentamos al Coachella
Valley Water District (CVWD) para el modelado
hidráulico del proyecto. Estamos esperando el
resultado de CVWD para saber si vamos a tener
agua suficiente para las necesidades del parque
incluyendo los baños, los fuentes de agua para
beber, la irrigación, y el splash pad.

DOWNKAST: ROCKEROS DE NORTH SHORE
Jose Aragon, miembro de la banda de

FEBRERO-MARZO-ABRIL
DownKast era solo una idea cuando
mis amigos y yo estábamos en la escuela
primaria. No teníamos idea como tocar
ningún instrumento, pero estábamos seguros
de que tendríamos nuestra banda. De alguna
manera nuestra vidas como músicos comenzó
cuando nos empezamos a juntar con nuestros
instrumentos, tratando de aprender a usarlos.
Con el paso de los años, fuimos mejorando
poco a poco, y eventualmente llegamos a un
nivel que nos permitió tocar en muchos patios
en el valle de Coachella. También tocamos en
muchas batallas de banda, donde ganamos
un par de trofeos. Ahora que somos adultos
nos es más difícil encontrarnos para practicar
y tocar juntos debido a nuestros horarios
y ocupaciones, pero la chispa no morirá, y
seguiremos persiguiendo el éxito.

Juan Carlos “Chuck” Ortega, un artista local
del Valle de Coachella, fundó su compañía
de video, Cuuck Films, en el 2008. Ortega
es un graduado de Los Angeles Film School.
Chuck se mantiene muy ocupado dedicando su
tiempo a producciones con un variado rango
de presupuestos. El trabaja en films, videos, y
gráficos localmente y también fuera del Valle.
La calidad de sonido, video de alta definición,
excelentes efectos y creatividad, le han abierto
muchas puertas a Chuck. Sus créditos como
director y productor incluyen trabajos con
bandas muy reconocidas como son Banda
Recoditos, Banda El Recodo and Los Tucanes
De Tijuana. Además a trabajado con artistas
emergentes como Clika Los Necios, J Patron,
Erika Vidrio, and La Atraxion. Ortega
también crea comerciales para negocios locales
que han aparecido en Televisa, Telemundo,
and Univision. El es además un individuo
muy orientado a la familia, con altos valores
familiares y morales.
Cuando le preguntamos a qué se debe su
éxito nos contestó:
“Hay que trabajar duro, enfocarse en
nuestro potencial, echar para alante, y nunca
detenerse.”
Nos sentimos honrados y orgullosos de

Estas son algunas de las ideas intercambiadas
durante la primera junta del 2015 del Comité
de Arte de North Shore. En esta junta el Comité
dedicó parte del tiempo a refleccionar acerca
de los logros alcanzados en colaboración con
los residentes de North Shore.

Avanzando juntos:los lideres
comunitarios de North Shore
celebran mas de un año de
labor relacionada con el
proyecto del parque
El 20 de Enero, Chelina Odbert, Jessica Bremner
y Jessie Heneghan de Kounkuey Design Initiative,
se reunieron con un grupo de residentes-líderes
de North Shore que han tenido un gran impacto
tanto en la fase inicial del proyecto del parque,
como en los éxitos obtenidos hasta la fecha. Estos
líderes de North Shore representan varios grupos
comunitarios y programáticos relacionados con
el parque, incluyendo la cooperativa de bicicletas
Desert Riderz, el Comité de Arte de North Shore,
North Shore Delicias Laguna Azul Market,
ICUC, entre otros.
En la junta los miembros y líderes de estos
grupos discutieron sus logros colectivos y los
momentos que los enorgullecen. Además
discutieron los retos pasados y también futuros.
La lista de logros incluyó la publicación de
El Progreso, el periódico de North Shore, la
organización exitosa de muchos eventos y
programas de arte, la fundación del Comité de
Arte y del grupo de limpieza de North Shore,
y la apertura del mercado Delicias Laguna
Azul. Fue una conversación muy animada que
nos ayudó a reflexionar acerca del progreso
de la comunidad, el futuro del parque y de las
actividades programáticas.
El grupo acordó que hay necesidad de formar
un comité de desarrollo comunitario. Además
se necesita una más activa participación de más
personas en todos los aspectos relacionados
con el proyecto del parque de North Shore y
asuntos comunitarios, como son la limpieza del
Salton Sea, y el mejoramiento del Sun Bus. Si

Mercado de Delicias Laguna Azul
Delicias Laguna Azul, el primer mercado
comunitario de North Shore organizado por
sus residentes, abre todos los primeros
sábados de cada mes en el parqueo del
North Shore Yacht Club, de 2 a 6pm.
Venga a disfrutar de deliciosas ofertas de
comida casera, música en vivo, y un ambiente
muy familiar. ¡Allí los vemos!

Reparación de Bicicletas de Desert
Riderz
¿Necesita reparar su bicicleta? Tráigala al
Taller de Reparación de Bicicletas de los Desert
Riderz de North Shore. Todas las reparaciones
son gratis y son hechas por un especial
colectivo de jóvenes de North Shore llamado
Desert Riderz. Los jóvenes han recibido
entrenamiento por más de un año con Carlos
Hernández, Interno de Planeamiento Urbano
de Kounkuey Design Initiative. Este colectivo
también tomará el liderazgo del programa de
préstamo de bicis en North Shore.
El Taller de Reparación de Bicicletas abre
todos los Miércoles, de 4 a 5pm en la
Avenida Seaside.

OPINION
Por Armando, Pimentel, un residente
Unos años atrás empezamos a una petición
de un parque y una escuela aquí en North
Shore. Hemos recibido 150 firmas, pero cuando
llegó el supervisor del condado, nadie apareció
para la reunión. La gente aquí en North Shore
piden un montón de cosas, pero nunca se
presentan a las reuniones sobre la costa norte,
y que fue desalentador para mí. Así que ahora
con un nuevo grupo de personas, las cosas
han comenzado a moverse hacia adelante. He
sido residente de North Shore de 15 años. He
dejado en nuestro objetivo de establecer una
nueva escuela, parque de la comunidad y de
nuestro propio código postal.

EL MERCADO DELICIAS LAGUNA AZUL ABRE AL PUBLICO
Delicias Laguna Azul tuvo su gran apertura el día 7 de
diciembre en el Yacht Club de North Shore. Vendedores de
North Shore se juntaron para vender su comida deliciosa
y ropa y accesorios únicos. Había música, una actuación
de baile y diversión para todas las edades de la familia. El
grupo de vendedores de North Shore ha trabajado mucho
por los últimos 18 meses, participando en entrenamiento
para pequeños negocios para crear sus planes de negocio y
prepararse para la apertura de Delicias Laguna Azul. Delicias
Laguna Azul quermes se lleva a cabo afuera del Yacht Club el
primer fin de semana del mes de 12 a 4pm.
Manualidades creadas en North Shore por Adriana, una de las artistas de
nuestra comunidad.
Algunos de los productos que se venden en el mercado
y que podrán disfrutar en el próximo Delicias en Febrero
son: tamales, enchiladas, tacos, hot dogs, tostadas, menudo,
empanadas, pozole, nachos, raspados, champurrado, yogurt
natural con fruta, tostitos locos, productos de Herbalife, y
productos que incluyen ropa, accesorios y manualidades.
Esperamos verlos pronto en el próximo Delicias Laguna Azul
el día domingo 8 de febrero de 12 a 4pm en el estacionamiento
del Yacht Club. Además del mercado, tendremos la exhibición
de arte de residentes-artistas de North Shore y también
música y baile. Traiga a toda la familia. Nos vemos allí!
El mercado ofrece ropa y accesorios ademas de deliciosas comidas y
bebidas.
