¡VAMOS NORTH SHORE!
NORTH SHORE YOUTH DESIGN A MUSEUM INSPIRED BY THE
PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF THEIR COMMUNITY

Why are the fish dying? How long has the
Salton Sea been here? Why do I find shells in
my backyard? Is it true that North Shore is not
on the map? For eight sizzling summer days
our brains buzzed with questions about the
enigmatic Salton Sea and the community that
so many call home. We met with local experts,
searched for answers, and found creative
ways to share what we had learned using the
language of art.
¡Vamos North Shore! was a summer arts
initiative designed by Shannon Scrofano
and myself in collaboration with KDI and
Desert Recreation District. During that time
Shannon and I, along with a wonderful group
of community volunteers, worked with more
than 60 children and teens to explore what
makes North Shore unique and special. Our
journey began with the collaborative design of
an ideal North Shore Museum, complete with
an observation deck, underwater tunnel, and a
waterfall that welcomed the visitors.
Our museum, brought to life with
construction paper, Elmer’s glue, miles of
sticky tape, and a ton of imagination, became
our base of operations. By the end, our North
Shore Museum had grown to include five
different exhibits and one animated film, all
created by the youth.
One of our first exhibits, “Postcards From the
Past” was inspired by a visit by local historian
Gretchen Perez, who shared with us a wealth
of information about the area’s past. We
learned about the ancient Lake Cahuilla, that
had filled the Coachella, Imperial and Mexicali
valleys, about the salt factories that came
many years later, and the railroad that brought
people, goods, and a new way of life. And the
Salton Sea? Well, that “la laguna” was created
in 1905, after an engineering error caused an
irrigation canal to overflow and carry water
from the Colorado River into the Salton Sink.
Sage Lewis, an LA-based musician and
composer also came to visit with us. He taught
us how to actively listen for “the sounds of
North Shore” and how to use different types
of microphones and recording devices. We
made sound recordings around the community,
and invited adult residents for a special
interview day. All our recordings will soon
become archived as a digital sound map of the
community on our website.
In addition to collecting sounds and stories,
we built collections of objects found in the area:
shells from backyards, fish bones, ancient tufa,
and dead fish were all put inside display cases to
see. Armed with photo cameras we also created
a collection of images of North Shore as we see

Hello and blessings to all
who are reading this very first
issue of the newspaper, brand
new to our city of North
Shore.
My name is Eulalia Dominguez. I work
for KDI, the nonprofit organization that is
building the new park. I am also a ten-year
resident of North Shore.
Since I have never had an article in a
professional newspaper before, I want to use
this space to write a bit about the life I see in
the community. This summer, I have been
in art classes for children at the Yacht Club
with Shannon and Evelyn as teachers. I
was surprised to learn along with them, to
see and hear that there is so much creativity
and intelligence in our children. I think
the children of North Shore are so lucky to
have the parents and adults who live here;
who strive each day. That’s why I see happy,
curious and cooperative children.
What you should know about me personally,
as a resident and organizer, is that I sincerely
hope that we can continue to maintain healthy
homes and families in all aspects.

it today: incandescent, alive, complex, and rich
with contrasts.
For our last museum exhibit, Manuel
Cuchilla, an experienced animator, helped us
turn a storyboard into an animated film about
North Shore’s past, present, and future. In the
last scene of the film, “The Forgotten Lake”,
our questions, too large to hold on to, point to
the intimate connection between the future of
North Shore and the Salton Sea. “What can
we do to help our community and save the
Salton Sea?” someone asks. “Oh, I have an
idea!”, says Karolina, “we can pick up trash
and clean up the lake!” “We can research how
to desalinate the water!”, says Emily. “We can
build a new park to bring people together!”
Our museum celebrated its grand opening
at the Yacht Club on August 7th. All the
work has been archived on the website www.
northshoreca.net where you can visit our
virtual museum for years to come!

RESIDENTS WORK ON THE DESIGN OF A NEW POSITIVE
COMMUNITY IDENTITY TO SHARE WITH THE WORLD
Coming from a big city to a small town has
been quite a change for me, especially because
North Shore is a little town that is not even
on most maps. Go figure! So, there is this
coordinator named Eulalia that always insisted
I attend the community meeting. She would
tell me “Theresa, I would like you to attend
the community meetings. There is so much we
discuss. The town is growing rapidly. There are
so many changes. You will enjoy it.” So, after
much thought, I finally decided to attend. I
was introduced to these amazing teachers and
artists, Evelyn and Shannon. Little did I know
that they would come from Los Angeles to
teach us how to establish a brand or identity for
our city and the new projects that are taking
place here.
I had never really sat down to think about
what creating a brand entailed. I just took it
as “Oh that’s a very famous brand. Let me try
their product and see how I like it.” I would
try the product and, if I liked it, I would
continue using it. If I didn’t, I would never use
it again. Not only that, I would tell everyone I
knew about the product and how good or how
horrible it was.
To start thinking about North Shore new
identity, our Arts Committee started with
“The Meeting”. At this meeting we were able
to learn what the start of a “brand” was, and
how it applied to our city. First we had all these
strangers in a room (all North Shore residents)
discussing what their perception of North
Shore is. We shared words like “peaceful,
beautiful night view, the agriculture, the
mountains, the stars”. The words were endless

as to what North Shore residents perceived our
community to be.
Then we started to discuss how North Shore
is perceived by outsiders. It got ugly! What
is the first thing we hear outsiders say about
North Shore? It smells, the crime is high, it’s
dirty, it’s so far, and it’s a lonely place, its out in
the boondocks. Wow…how terrible this is for
us North Shore residents to hear that type of
negativity.
From all these ideas, the positive, and the
negative, our sketches started to come to life.
To see the young ones become so involved
along with the adults was fabulous. To see
the older generations that have lived in North
Shore all of their lives and express the changes
they have seen throughout the years was also
very interesting. There was so much excitement
in the room because now we were coming
together as one: the young with the old creating
a new identity and vision for the city that we
had grown so fond of, the city that we had
learned to love. We wanted to share our city
with the rest of the world.
At the next meeting we had, we were given
the opportunity to share our own sketches
about our vision for North Shore’s future and
new identity. The sketches were vibrant. They
showed lots of color. This is North Shore: all of
its natural beauty, its mountains, beautiful blue
skies, a beautiful sea, the birds that have made
their home here in North Shore to meet and
share their spectacular beauty, the gorgeous
sunset, the sway of the palm trees, the clarity
of the evening stars, the brightness of the full
moon and the peace of silence.
With all of this wealth of information our
teachers left, but when they came back they
came with a logo. The logo was simple yet very
interesting. They showed us many different
ways it could be used. The diversity of it was
amazing. We were all in awe of the creation.
So next time I see a “brand” I will forever
remember the hard work it entails and the way
a little town named North Shore came together
to create it.
Had it not been for the Arts Committee,
created in June of this year, all of this would
have not been possible. The Committee gives us
the opportunity to meet our neighbors, gather
important information and come up with new
ideas for our community. The Arts Committee
will also focus on teaching individuals new
arts skills. It will play a very important role in
helping the community become more involved
and artistic. We will apply this creativity to put
our little town of North Shore on the map.

When Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI)
held our first community meeting in the
backyard of a North Shore resident’s home
in January 2013, we had a small budget ready
to transform one of the small vacant lots next
to the existing playground on Dolphin and
Miramar; it would fit the vision of North
Shore’s residents and improve the existing
public space. This project had received funding
from The California Endowment’s Building
Healthy Communities Initiative. A year and
a half later the dream to build a new park in
North Shore has become larger. We are now
entering the final stages of creating a site plan
for a 5-acre public space designed step-by-step
with the residents of North Shore. But, it took
us a while to get here.
During our early community design
workshops in 2013, KDI worked with North
Shore residents to identify the most pressing
needs in their community and possible physical
amenities that we could build to address those
needs. We then prioritized solutions that
would function on site. During these meetings
KDI realized that the small lot next to North
Shore’s playground was neither in the right
location nor the right size to tackle the needs
of the community. Residents participating in
KDI’s design workshops suggested a number
of “ideal” sites for a public space to be located,
taking into consideration what was wanted on
a public space and the financial constraints
existing for the project. During this time Desert
Recreation District became a partner on the
project and agreed to manage the park after its
construction, and in addition, Desert Alliance
for Community Empowerment donated a
5-acre site along 70th Avenue to the project!
The park will have a full-size soccer field,
skate plaza, pavilion, recreational lawn, play
space, exercise circuit, bike repair space, and
bike share. Over the last year we have added
(and already begun) a number of programs
that will eventually be held at the park: a
small business training class has developed
a market, a youth bike cooperative provides
free bike repair services to anyone in North
Shore and is developing, with KDI, the North
Shore Bike Program, an arts program will
create with North Shore residents different
art interventions such as the new newspaper,
the summer arts program, a new logo for the
community, arts exhibitions and performances,
all to be integrated into the site and in different
parts of North Shore.
With this larger-sized project we have
spent the past year applying to a number of
different grant opportunities to help us fill
the project’s budget gap (a result of creating
this larger park). We have successfully funded
half of the project, winning national grant
competitions from ArtPlace America and the
National Endowment for the Arts, and have
received additional funding from The Surdna
Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation.
The next few months will be very busy for
us here at KDI. We are continuing to look
for additional funding for the project and are
refining the site plan designs. We are hoping
to submit our designs for permit approval this
Fall. The permit approval process could take
anywhere from 6 months to a year, and as
we continue through the approval process we
hope you and your family will continue to join
us in upcoming design workshops for the skate
plaza, play space, and pavilion.

THE NEW ARTS COMMITEE OF NORTH SHORE

Hello friends — I’m Jose Nolasco, and I am
a member of the North Shore Arts Committee,
along with my ten-year-old daughter Judith
Nolasco. It’s a privilege to be part of this fun
and sociable group founded by Shannon and
Evelyn, two artists full of energy and positivity
in our community, who are working hard with
us to improve North Shore. They organize
community meetings, and as a committee, we
look forward to achieving our goals.
My daughter and I, as members, have had the
opportunity to participate and make decisions
on several projects. The first was the formation
of our Art Committee of North Shore. We
used a fun, creative process to co-design of
a logo and brand that represents us all as a
community and as a family. The Committee together with its partners - are organizing the
first art exhibition to open at the North Shore
home of Mrs. Isabel Hernandez on August 30
from 5 to 8pm.

North Shore is hosting its first ever residentled market at the Yacht Club facility parking
lot! Local businesses have been hard at work,
preparing to start North Shore’s Delicias
Laguna Azul to launch next month. If all goes
well with obtaining the licenses and permits
from governing authorities, the market’s
opening event will be at the end of September.
Once the North Shore park is constructed and
open to the public, the market will be moved to
operate at the park on a regular basis.
Several of the participating business of
Delicias Laguna Azul had their debut on
July 30th and August 6th at the North Shore
Beach and Yacht Club where they treated
North Shore residents who were attending
park design workshops to a taste of their truly
delicious foods. Their products were enjoyed by
all! The residents running these business have
been preparing for a long time: for almost a
year, twice a month, these new business leaders
have been meeting to develop their products,
write a business plan, and obtain permits.
We are excited to announce the following
high quality products that various businesses
are going to be selling at Delicias Laguna
Azul. They include, but are not limited to:
tamales, empanadas, tortas, nachos, fruit and
yogurt, various Mexican-style antojitos, iced
coffee frappes, raspados, and aguas frescas.
In addition, a non-food related business that
will be at the market is ‘Bee Bella’, a boutique
design business that sells fashionable hair
accessories. More announcements will be made
closer to the opening of the market. Stay tuned
to learn more and support local North Shore
businesses!

2. We hold bi-weekly meetings on the
planning of future bike programming.
All this takes place at Isaac and Zachary’s
home on Surfside between Vander Veer Rd.

3. We are launching the first ever bike
share system in North Shore. Bike share lets
community members use bikes for a few hours
a day and return them similar to books at a
library.

MANIFESTO FOR A
MORE BEAUTIFUL
NORTH SHORE
We are going to clean the community with
the help of North Shore residents. Also we are
going to fill up trash bags with dead fish and
trash. We are going to pile up the trash bags
in one spot and take pictures of people cleaning and take before and after pictures. We are
going to put it on a news article and interview
people about what they think about cleaning
the lake. We are going to clean every Saturday
or Sunday. We are also going to put signs with
some art saying to not dump trash in or outside
the lake for the good of our town and culture.
We are going to backup KDI, Desert Riderz,
and the community of North Shore.
The next clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, August 30th. We will meet at 5:30am
in the Yacht Club parking lot. The cleanup will
take 1-2 hours. Everyone who wants to come
is welcome!

Mi nombre is Eulalia
Dominguez y trabajo para KDI (Kounkuey

Como nunca he tenido artículos en un
periódico ni tampoco soy profesional voy
a escribir un poco sobre lo que he estado
viviendo en mi comunidad.
Algo de mi comunidad: he estado en

Y me sorprendo al aprender yo junto con
todos ellos, al ver y escuchar que hay tanta
creatividad e inteligencia en los niños. Creo
que ellos son afortunados de tener padres y
madres como los adultos de esta ciudad que
se esfuerzan cada día, porque yo veo niños
alegres, curiosos y cooperativos.

¡VAMOS NORTH SHORE!

¿Porqué se están muriendo los peces?
¿Desde hace cuánto tiempo está aquí el Salton
Sea? ¿Porqué encuentro conchas de caracol
en mi patio? ¿Es cierto que North Shore no
está en el mapa? Por ocho calientes días de
verano nuestros cerebros zumbaban llenos de
preguntas acerca del enigmático Salton Sea
(nuestra laguna) y la comunidad que es un hogar
para tantos. Nos encontramos con expertos
locales, buscamos respuestas, y encontramos
muchas maneras creativas de compartir lo que
aprendimos usando el lenguaje del arte.
¡Vamos North Shore! fue una iniciativa
artística de verano diseñada por Shannon
Scrofano y por mí, en colaboración con KDI y
Desert Recreation District. Durante este tiempo
Shannon y yo, junto con un maravilloso grupo
de voluntarios de la comunidad, trabajamos
con más de 60 niños y adolescentes explorando
que es lo que hace a North Shore tan único
y especial. Nuestra trayectoria comenzó con
el diseño colaborativo de nuestro museo ideal
de North Shore, que incluyó balcones de
observación, túnel subacuático, y una catarata
que le daba la bienvenida a los visitantes en
la entrada principal. Nuestro museo cobró
vida con papeles de colores, goma de pegar,
millas de cinta adhesiva, y una tonelada de
imaginación. El museo de convirtió en nuestra
“base de operaciones.” Al final del programa,
nuestro Museo de North Shore incluía cinco
exhibiciones y una película animada, todo
creado por los jóvenes.
Una de nuestras exhibiciones, “Postales
del Pasado”, fue inspirada por la visita de
Gretchen Perez, una historiadora local, quien
compartió con nosotros una enorme cantidad
de información acerca del pasado de esta área
de California. Aprendimos acerca del antiguo
lago Cahuilla, que había inundado los valles de
Mexicali, Imperial y Coachella muchos miles
de años atrás. También aprendimos acerca
de las fábricas de sal que vinieron muchos
años después, y del ferrocarril que trajo gente,
productos y una nueva forma de vida. ¿Y el
Salton Sea? Pues la laguna se creó en 1905,
después de que un error de ingeniería causó
que se desbordara un canal de irrigación que
llevó agua del río Colorado al Salton Sink por
dos años. North Shore fue fundado 60 años
después, en 1965.
Sage Lewis, un músico y compositor de Los
Angeles también vino a visitarnos. El nos enseñó
como escuchar atentamente “los sonidos de
North Shore”y como usar diferentes tipos de
micrófonos y grabadoras. Hicimos grabaciones
de sonido por toda la comunidad, e invitamos
a residentes adultos para entrevistarlos. Todas
nuestras grabaciones pronto serán archivadas
en un mapa digital de sonidos de la comunidad
que estará en nuestro sitio web.
Además de grabar sonidos y entrevistas,
construímos colecciones de objetos encontrados
en esta área como son las conchas de caracol,
huesos de pescado, piedra tufa, y pescados secos.
Armados con cámaras fotográficas también
creamos colecciones de imágenes del presente
de North Shore, con toda su incandescencia,
vida, complejidad, riqueza, y contrastes.
Para nuestra última exhibición, Manuel
Cuchilla, un experimentado animador, nos
ayudó a convertir nuestra secuencia de viñetas
en una película animada acerca del pasado,
presente y futuro de North Shore. En la última
escena de la película “El Lago Olvidado”,
nuestras preguntas, incontenibles, revelan
la íntima relación entre el futuro de North
Shore y el Salton Sea. “¿Qué podemos hacer
para ayudar a nuestra comunidad y salvar la
laguna? alguien pregunta. “¡Tengo una idea!”,
dice Karolina, “¡podemos limpiar la basura
y la laguna!” “¡Podemos investigar como
desalinizar el agua!” dice Emily. “¡Podemos
construir un parque que nos ayude a juntar a
nuestra comunidad!”
Nuestro museo celebró su gran apertura en
el Yacht Club el 7 de Agosto. Todo nuestro
trabajo ha sido archivado en el sitio web www.
northshoreca.net donde usted podrá visitar
nuestro museo virtual de ahora en adelante.

RESIDENTES TRABAJAN EN EL DISEÑO DE UNA IDENTIDAD
COMUNITARIA PARA COMPARTIR CON EL MUNDO

Haber venido de una ciudad grande a un
pequeño pueblo ha sido un gran cambio
para mi, especialmente porque North Shore
es un pueblo chico que ni siquiera esta en
el mapa. ¡Increíble! Hay una coordinadora
llamada Eulalia que siempre me ha insistido
que participe en las juntas comunitarias. Ella
me decía “Theresa, quiero que vengas a las
reuniones de la comunidad. Hay mucho que
discutir. El pueblo esta creciendo rápidamente.
Hay muchos cambios. Te van a gustar.” Así que,
después de mucho pensarlo, decidí comenzar
a participar. Me presentaron a dos maestras y
artistas excelentes, Evelyn y Shannon. Yo no
sabía que ellas continuarían viniendo desde
Los Angeles a enseñarnos como establecer una
nueva identidad o marca para nuestra ciudad y
para los nuevos proyectos que están tomando
lugar aquí.
Yo nunca me había sentado a pensar
acerca de lo que es necesario para crear una
nueva marca o identidad. Yo solo pensaba:
“Esa es una marca famosa. Quiero probar
sus productos y ver si me gustan.” Entonces
probaba el producto, y si me gustaba, lo
continuaba usando. Si no, dejaba de usarlo. No
solo eso, también le decía a otras personas lo
que sabía del producto y si era bueno o horrible.
Para comenzar a pensar sobre la nueva
identidad de North Shore, el Comité de
Arte tuvo “La Primera Junta”. En esta
junta aprendimos sobre el proceso de como
crear una nueva marca o identidad, en este
caso, para nuestra ciudad. Primero, en una
habitación llena de extraños (todos residentes
de North Shore) hablamos sobre cual es nuestra
propia percepción y descripción de nuestra
comunidad. Compartimos palabras como
“apacible, bella vista nocturna, la agricultura,

las montañas, las estrellas.” Las palabras y
frases fluían por docenas al describir nuestra
querida comunidad de North Shore.
Nuestro segundo paso fue discutir cómo
North Shore es percibido por personas que no
viven en nuestra comunidad. ¡Ahí fue cuando se
puso feo! ¿Qué es lo primero que escuchamos
decir de North Shore a una persona que no
vive aquí? Que huele feo, que la criminalidad
es alta, que esta sucio, que es muy lejos y muy
solitario. ¡Qué triste es para nosotros, residentes
de North Shore, escuchar tanta negatividad.
Luego, con estas ideas tanto positivas como
negativas, nuestros dibujos comenzaron a
cobrar vida. Fue fabuloso ver a los jóvenes
trabajar en perfecta colaboración con los
adultos. Fue también muy interesante ver a
las generaciones de personas adultas que han
vivido en North Shore todas sus vidas expresar
los cambios que ellos han visto en nuestra
comunidad. Todo el entusiasmo que se sentía
en nuestra junta se debía a nuestro trabajo
en conjunto: los jóvenes y los adultos creando
juntos una nueva identidad y visión para
esta ciudad que tanto disfrutamos y a la que
hemos aprendido a amar. Queremos compartir
nuestra ciudad con el resto del mundo.
En la junta siguiente, tuvimos la oportunidad
de compartir nuestros propios dibujos que
ilustraban nuestra visión del futuro y la
identidad de North Shore. Los dibujos eran
vibrantes y mostraban muchos colores. Esto
es North Shore: toda su belleza natural, sus
montañas, su cielo azul, su bella laguna, las
aves que vienen de todas partes del mundo
para compartir su espectacular belleza, las
preciosas puestas de sol, la danza de las palmas,
la claridad de las estrellas en la noche, la viveza
de la luna y la paz del silencio.
Con toda esta información nuestras maestra
se fueron, pero cuando regresaron nos trajeron
un logo. El logo era muy simple y a la vez
muy interesante. Ellas nos mostraron muchas
maneras en que el logo puede ser utilizado.
La diversidad es increíble. Nosotros quedamos
fascinados con la creación. La próxima vez que
vea una “marca” o logo recordaré todo el
trabajo que este proceso tomó, y como nuestro
pequeño pueblo de North Shore se juntó para
crear nuestra visión.
Si no hubiera sido por el Comité de Arte
de North Shore, fundado en Junio de este
año, nada de esto hubiera sido posible. El
Comité nos da la oportunidad de juntarnos
con nuestros vecinos, recolectar información,
y compartir nuevas ideas para el beneficio
de nuestra comunidad. El Comité de Arte
también se enfocará en enseñar nuevas técnicas
artísticas a quienes quieran participar. Tomará
además un papel muy importante en ayudar
a la comunidad a estar más involucrada y
a celebrar las artes. Queremos usar nuestra
creatividad para poner a nuestro pequeño
pueblo de North Shore en el mapa.

Cuando Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI)
tuvo su primera junta comunitaria en el patio
de un residente de North Shore en Enero del
2013, teníamos un pequeño presupuesto para
transformar uno de los terrenos próximos
al parque de recreo localizado en Dolphin y
Miramar; el diseño representaría la visión de
los residentes de North Shore y mejoraría el
acceso a un nuevo espacio público. El proyecto
había recibido fondos de “Building Healthy
Communities” una iniciativa del California
Endowment. Un año y medio después el sueño
de construir un parque en North Shore ha
crecido. Estamos entrando ahora la última
etapa de la creación del plan de diseño para
un espacio público de 5 acres, que ha sido
diseñado, paso a paso, con los residentes de
North Shore. Pero este proceso nos tomó
tiempo.
Durante nuestros primeros talleres de
diseño comunitario en 2013, KDI trabajó con
residentes de North Shore para identificar
las necesidades más urgentes y las posibles
instalaciones físicas que se podrían construir
para abordar esas necesidades.
Luego
priorizamos las soluciones que podrían
funcionar en el terreno. Durante estas juntas
KDI comprendió que el pequeño terreno
próximo al parque existente no estaba en el
lugar ideal y no tenía el tamaño suficiente para
abordar las necesidades identificadas por la
comunidad. Los residentes que participaron
en estos talleres de diseño nos sugirieron
varios terrenos “ideales” para el nuevo parque
y espacio público, tomando en cuenta las
instalaciones que querían en este espacio y las
limitaciones financieras existentes. Durante
este tiempo, Desert Recreation District se
convirtió en uno de nuestros colaboradores
y aceptó administrar el parque después de
que sea construído. Además Alliance for
Community Empowerment donó un terreno
de 5 acres localizado en la 70ta Avenida para
este proyecto.
El parque tendrá un campo de fútbol, plaza
de patinaje, pabellón, césped recreacional,
espacio de juegos, circuito de ejercicios, espacio
para la reparación de bicicletas, y un programa
de renta de bicicletas. Durante el último
año hemos añadido (y hemos comenzado
ya) varios programas que, eventualmente,
tomarán lugar en el parque. Una pequeña
clase de negocios ha desarrollado un mercado.
Jóvenes de una cooperativa de bicicletas
brindan servicios gratis de reparación de
bicicletas a otros residentes de North Shore,
y están desarrollando con la yuda de KDI,
el programa de renta de bicicletas de North
Shore. Un programa de arte está creando con
residentes diferentes intervenciones artísticas
como el nuevo periódico, una nueva identidad
o logo para la comunidad, el programa de
arte de verano, nuevas exhibiciones de arte y
música, y otras iniciativas que serán integradas
en el nuevo terreno del parque y en diferentes
lugares en North Shore.
Con este proyecto más ambicioso hemos
dedicado tiempo en el último año a aplicar a
diferentes becas para ayudarnos a completar el
presupuesto que necesitamos, el resultado de
estar creando este parque más grande que el
que habíamos planeado al principio. Hemos
tenido éxito en encontrar financiamiento para
la mitad del presupuesto, y hemos ganando
competencias nacionales con ArtPlace America
and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Además hemos recibido fondos de The Surdna
Foundation y de Tony Hawk Foundation. En
los próximos meses KDI estará muy ocupado.
Estaremos buscando fondos adicionales
para la construcción del parque y, además,
continuaremos trabajando en los planos de
diseño finales. Esperamos presentar estos
diseños en el otoño para obtener la aprobación
de los permisos. El proceso de aprobación
de permisos puede tomar de 6 meses a un
año. Mientras continuamos con este proceso,
esperamos que usted y su familia participen en
los próximos talleres de diseño para la plaza de
patinaje, el área de juegos, y el pabellón.

EL NUEVO COMITÉ DE ARTE DE NORTH SHORE

Hola amigos, soy Jose Nolasco y soy
miembro del Comité de Arte de North Shore
junto con mi hija Judith Nolasco de 10 años.
Es un privilegio formar parte de este divertido
y alegre grupo fundado por Shannon y Evelyn,
dos artistas llenas de positivismo y energía que se
encuentran en nuestra comunidad trabajando
duramente con nosotros para mejorar a North
Shore. Ellas organizan reuniones comunitarias,
como las de nuestro Comité, y en estas
reuniones visualizamos nuestra metas.
Yo y mi hija, como miembros, hemos tenido
la oportunidad de participar y tomar decisiones
con respecto a varios proyectos. El primero fue
la formación de nuestro Comité de Arte de
North Shore. También la creación y selección,
a través de un proceso creativo muy divertido,
de un logo o marca que nos represente a todos
como comunidad y como familia. Además,
el Comité junto con sus colaboradores están
organizando la primera exhibición de arte de
North Shore que abrirá en la casa de la Señora
Isabel el día 30 de Agosto de 5 a 8pm. Ademas
hemos trabajado para la comunidad en este
nuevo periódico “El Progreso” en donde
tratamos de ponerlos al día a ustedes de todos
los acontecimientos importantes de North
Shore y sus alrededores. Esperamos que sea de
su agrado y les sea útil. También aceptamos
comentarios y sugerencias que sean para
mejorar nuestro trabajo y sean beneficiosos
para nuestra gente.
Esperamos contar con su apoyo a presenciar
y compartir lo que les estamos ofreciendo.

MAS HERMOSO
Vamos a limpiar la comunidad con los
residentes de North Shore. Además vamos a
llenar bolsas de basura con pescados muertos y
desperdicios. Vamos a colectar todas las bolsas
de basura en un solo sitio y vamos a tomar
fotos de las personas limpiando, además de
fotos que muestren como los lugares se veían
antes y después de ser limpiados. Vamos a
poner todo esto en un artículo periodístico
y entrevistaremos a varias personas sobre lo
que ellas piensan acerca de la limpieza de la
laguna. Vamos a limpiar todos los Sábados o
Domigos. También vamos a poner carteles
con arte pidiendo que no tiren desperdicios
adentro o afuera de la laguna, por el bien de
nuestro pueblo y cultura. Vamos a apoyar
a KDI, Desert Riderz, y a la comunidad de
North Shore. La próxima limpieza será
el Sábado 30 de Agosto. Nos reuniremos
a las 5:30am en el estacionamiento del Yacht
Club donde las personas suelen pescar. La
limpieza durará una o dos horas. ¡Todos son
bienvenidos!

¡North Shore pronto estará abriendo sus
puertas al primer mercado organizado por
residentes! El mercado estará localizado en
el estacionamiento del Yacht Club. Varios
negocios locales han estado trabajando duro,
preparándose para el apertura oficial del
mercado en el próximo mes. Si todo va bien
con la obtención de las licencias y los permisos
de venta otorgados por las autoridades de
gobierno, la posible fecha del comienzo del
mercado será a fines de Septiembre. Una
vez que el nuevo parque de North Shore esté
construído y sea abierto al público, el mercado
comenzará a operar en el parque.
Varios de los negocios participantes de
Delicias Laguna Azul debutaron el 30 de Julio
y el 6 de Agosto en el North Shore Beach and
Yacht Club, donde ofrecieron muestras de sus
deliciosas comidas a residentes participantes de
los talleres de diseño del nuevo parque. ¡Todos
disfrutaron de sus productos! Los negocios de
Delicias Laguna Azul se han estado preparando
por un largo tiempo: por casi un año, dos veces
al mes, estos nuevos líderes de negocios ha
estado participando en juntas para desarrollar
sus productos, escribir un plan de negocios, y
obtener permisos.
Les anunciamos con mucho entusiasmo los
productos de alta calidad que estos negocios
estarán vendiendo en Delicias Laguna Azul.
Estos productos incluirán tamales, empanadas,
tortas, nachos, yogurt con frutas frescas,
varios antojitos mexicanos, café frappé,
raspados, y aguas frescas. Además de los
negocios de comida, tendremos un negocio
boutique llamado ‘Bee Bella’ que ofrece
preciosos accesorios para el pelo. Tendremos
más anuncios cuando se acerque la fecha de
apertura del mercado. ¡Manténgase al tanto
para apoyar a los negocios locales de North
Shore!
