Executive Director's Letter
We are thrilled to bring in our 13th year with continued growth. We spent time over the past two years conducting a lot of strategic
planning, and 2013 was a year to implement this important framework for success. We scaled back and purposely tried to do less,
so that what we were doing had optimal amount of staff, facilitators, and fellows to assure that it would blossom and have the
greatest integrity. I am proud to have had such a strong cadre of dedicated board members, staff, 4 fellows, 11 interns, and over
16 volunteers who were able to create deep impact in Washington, DC and beyond. Our work impacted the lives of youth and
families living in all 8 Wards of the District.
In 2013 we changed the approach to our flagship Fly By Light youth program and began to anchor our activities directly at our public
school partner sites. Instead of asking our students to travel across the city to meet our facilitator at a public library or recreation
center, we decided to station our facilitators directly at the schools themselves. This helped make our program more accessible to
our youth participants, as many of them no longer incur prohibitive travel costs. In 2013 we had 3 high school program sites
(Cardozo H.S, Bell H.S., and Wilson H.S.).
Throughout the year our team also worked diligently to plan special events, day excursions, as well as organizing rough cut film
screenings of our soon to be finished film called, “Fly By Light.” In 2013, our team coordinated 14 advanced screenings of the film
that reached over 1,130 people. These screenings took place in 9 different cities around the country! We also were honored to have
the new film screened at 2 international film festivals.
In 2013, we directly served 114 students (meaning these students were a part of our program or attended multiple workshops with
us), and we reached out to thousands more through film screenings, school wide assemblies, and special events. In 2014, we plan to
continue engaging these students while continuing to expand our reach into more public high schools and community spaces in D.C.
Our monthly sustainer program is steadily growing and thanks to individuals we are able to diversify our revenue stream and make
our programs more sustainable. Our vast network of partner non-profit organizations, local businesses, and community leaders has
allowed us to accomplish more than what a budget sheet might predict. Thank you for helping us grow a movement, and transform
the world, one child at a time.
We hope you are excited as we are for what 2014 has in store!

Fly By Light
The Movie: Overview
Directed by filmmaker Ellie Walton and produced by HawaH, our new documentary film follows the
experience of a select group of youth who participated in our Fly By Light youth pilot program.
For the first time in their lives Mark (age 17), Asha (age 15), Martha (age 16), and Corey (age 17)
play in mountain streams, sing under the stars, and confront the entrenched abuse, violence and
neglect cycles of their past. But as they return to DC, each young person faces an unforgiving
series of hurdles and roadblocks that challenge their efforts to build a better life.
Through breathtaking visuals from street corners to mountaintops, Fly By Light is an intimate
exploration of the chaotic, confusing, and emotional journey to rewrite a young
person’s future.
