In White Bear Lake Area Schools, our students develop a love for learning, excel academically, are inspired to realize their dreams, and become engaged citizens with a global understanding. Dr. Michael Lovett Superintendent Back to school information: Early Childhood Screening State law mandates that all children are required to participate in Early Childhood Screening for entrance to kindergarten. This screening ensures that all young children in Minnesota are well equipped and ready for learning and that families can be aware of resources in the school and the community. The White Bear Lake Area Schools provide screening for children between the ages of 3 and 5 years of age at no cost (one time only). Screening at age 3 is best. Children only need to be screened once. Screening includes: vision and hearing, speech and language development; muscle coordination, general skills development, health and immunization review, family information review, and information on community resources. See calendar for Early Childhood Screening Dates. Register online at www.wblearlychildhoodregistration.org. For more information, call 651-653-3100 or visit www.isd624.org/EarlyChildhood. Stay Connected! Sign up for the electronic newsletter, sent to families and interested community members every other Friday. The publication includes district, student and school board information, along with upcoming event and “WBLAS in the news” segments. Subscribe at the District website, isd624.org. Minnesota Student Immunization Law Minnesota Statutes Section 121A.15 and Minnesota Rules Chapter 4604 requires that each student enrolled in and remaining in an elementary or secondary school must submit a record stating that they have received immunizations consistent with medically accepted standards. Immunization records from parents or health care provider stating the month, day, and year of each dose are acceptable. If the student or parent(s) meets one of the legal exemptions - contraindication for medical reasons or contraindication for conscientiously held beliefs - the health care provider or notary needs to sign an appropriate exemption. For students entering Kindergarten - 12th grade, the following immunizations are required: • 5 DPT, DT, Td (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) • 3 Hepatitis B (HBV) - These injections are given over a 6 month period) • 4 Polio (OPV or IPV) • 2 MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) • 2 Varicella (Chicken Pox) or physician verification of having had the disease (month/year). For students entering 7th grade -12th grade, the following additional immunization is required: • 1 Booster dose of Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria), given at or after 11 years of age. • 2 MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - if it was not received before kindergarten. • 2 Varicella (Chicken Pox) or physician verification of having had the disease (month/year). • Notice: Beginning in fall 2014-15 students entering 7th grade will be required to have received meningitis vaccination. For information about immunizations, please call Special Services at 651-407-7554 or speak with your school nurse. Community Use of School District Facilities The Community Services and Recreation Department maintains the school facility reservation schedule. Requests to use school district facilities should be made by emailing [email protected] or through the Facilities Scheduling line at 651-407-7503. Facility details and rental agreement information can be found at isd624.org/CommunityServices. Scheduling requests should be made at least one week prior to the desired reservation date. When the reservation date desired is less than one week from the activity date, the Community Services staff will make every effort to accommodate requests in a timely fashion. School Breakfast/Lunch Program The school district’s Nutrition Services Program provides nutritious breakfasts and lunches at each school. Milk is included with meals and may also be purchased separately. The White Bear Lake Area Schools offer a computerized meal payment system. Money is deposited into the student’s individual account. During meal time, students will enter a personal identification number (PIN) on a keypad which will access their account. Deposits into student accounts can be made each day at school or on the District website. Students whose families qualify may receive free or reduced-price meals by completing the application available at their school. Applications can then be submitted to the Food Service Office at 4855 Bloom Avenue in White Bear Lake and online at http://mealapp.isd624.org. The District follows strict non-discrimination rules to protect the anonymity of its students. Student meal prices for 2014-15: Breakfast Lunch Milk Elementary ........... $1.65................$2.55 ............. $.50 Secondary ............. $1.65 ...............$2.90 ............. $.50 Adult ..................... $1.85................$3.90.............. $.50 For more information about the District breakfast and lunch program or to learn about application for free/reduced meals, please call the Nutrition Services Office at 651-4077523. The department and the Minnesota Department of Education sponsor the USDA Child Nutrition Program. The USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer. School-age Child Care Extended Day is the district’s school age care program providing before and after school care and full-day programming on non-school days and in the summer. Elementary-age youth in the program are actively engaged in a structured environment to expand and develop their skills during their out of school time hours. The program is youth-focused and choice based, giving children the opportunity to develop strong social skills and positive relationships with peers, increase literacy and math skills, participate in individual and group activities, and work on special projects. Program activities include health and fitness, service projects, arts and crafts, creative play, languages and literacy, cooking, science, and much more. In addition to this, off-site field trips and special events take place throughout the year. Hours of operation: Before School ..........................6:30 a.m. - school begins After School.............................school dismissal - 6 p.m. Registrations are accepted on an ongoing basis. Fee information and registration materials are available at all Extended Day sites, on line at www.whitebearextendedday. org, and in the Community Services Office at District Center. Contact 651-407-7511 with questions. Extended Day will be closed the following dates in 2014-15: Aug. 18-29, Sept. 1, Nov. 27 & 28, Dec. 24-26 & 31, Jan. 1-2 & 19, Feb. 16, Apr. 3, May 25 and June 5. Transportation Bus route information will be mailed to parents approximately one week before the first day of the school year. Students should be at the bus stop five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Students only are allowed to ride the bus to and from the school and bus stop they are assigned. Students are not allowed to ride another bus to events such as birthday parties, scouting, or other activities. Bus schedules are somewhat flexible during the first week of school while drivers become familiar with the routes. In cases of inclement weather, bus drivers will try to maintain their schedules. However, if roads are icy or snow covered, buses may be late and parents and students should plan accordingly. Parents should use their discretion in sending children outside when the weather is extremely cold. For more information about District transportation, please call the Transportation Office at 651-407-7538. Emergency Weather Closing When a decision is made to close schools, an announcement will be made over major radio and television stations as early in the morning as possible. The announcement will identify our school district as White Bear Lake Area Public Schools. Efforts will also be made to use the parent notification alert system to notify families of school closures. If no announcement is made, schools will be in session as scheduled. Parents may also check the District website or Facebook page, or call the White Bear Lake Area School Closing Hotline number at 651-407-7540. Parents may also check the District website, our Facebook page, or call the White Bear Lake Area School Closing Hotline number at 651-407-7540. Extended Day will be open on the following school release days in 2014-15: Oct. 16 & 17 , Nov. 3, Dec. 22, 23, 29 & 30, Jan. 20, Mar. 9-13, Apr. 2, and May 4. Calendar is subject to change.
