The William Floyd School District is a dynamic educational system, continually adapting to meet the needs of
students and residents in the Mastic, Mastic Beach, Shirley and Moriches communities. Located in the Town of Brookhaven,
William Floyd is one of the largest school districts on Long Island. Our eight schools are dispersed over 15-square miles
serving approximately 8,700 students. Our community takes pride in our children’s educational achievements.

Visit Our Buildings
The William Floyd School District encourages community
members to become familiar with each of our schools. These
guidelines will help make your visits to our buildings safe for
yourself, our students and staff:
• Use each building’s main entrance. Do not enter through or
ask children to open side doors.
• Stop at the sign-in desk or the main office to identify yourself
and the reason for your visit.
• During school hours, pick up and sign out your child at the
main office. You must present a valid photo identification
upon entering the building.
• Park in designated areas, avoiding the bus loading and
discharging areas and fire zones.
• Remember that it is illegal to pass a school bus with red lights
flashing, even when the bus is in a school driveway or lot.
• Do not leave children at school or at school functions until the
chaperone arrives.
• Follow the directions of school personnel. They are there to
ensure the safety of yourself, students and staff members.
Private, Parochial and
Charter School Transportation
In accordance with Chapter 3635 of the New York State Education
Law, all requests for transportation to a private, parochial or charter
school for the 2015-2016 school year must be submitted in
writing to the transportation office postmarked before April 1,
2015. Request forms are available from the private, parochial or
charter school or by contacting the William Floyd Transportation
Department at 874-1305 or by logging onto the district website at
www.wfsd.k12.ny.us and the district social media pages.
2014-2015 School Closing Calendar
William Floyd’s 2014-2015 school calendar includes 182 instructional
days, one day for teacher orientation, one day for an assessment
scoring day and one day for a Superintendent’s Conference Day. The
first day for student attendance for grades K-9 is Tuesday, September 2, 2014. The first day for grades 10-12 is Wednesday, September
3, 2014. The last day of the school year is Thursday, June 25, 2015.

Passing a Stopped School Bus is Illegal
Section 1174 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits vehicles from
passing a stopped school bus. Every person convicted of a violation
of subdivision (a) of this section shall: for a first conviction thereof,
be punished by a fine not less than $250 nor more than $400 or by
imprisonment for not more than 30 days or by both such fine and
imprisonment; for a conviction of a second violation, both of which
were committed within a period of three years, such a person shall
be punished by a fine of not less than $600 nor more than $750 or by
imprisonment for not more than 180 days or by both such fine and
imprisonment; upon conviction of a third or subsequent violation, all
of which were committed within a period of three years, such person
shall be punished by a fine of not less than $750 nor more than $1000
or by imprisonment for not more than 180 days or by both such fine
and imprisonment.
Weather Emergency Information
For the safety of our students, school will be closed when the weather
reaches a point where the conditions are hazardous. The decision to
close the schools will be made by district administrators after they have
consulted with the local highway department and weather emergency
staff members. If the schools are to be closed, the radio and television
stations listed below will be notified by 6:15 am. A School Messenger
telephone call will also be placed to parents.
PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL, HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT OR
RADIO STATIONS. Calling the schools ties up the phone lines and
the weather emergency staff cannot function.
When road conditions in the early morning hours are hazardous, but
are expected to improve rapidly, a TWO-HOUR DELAYED OPENING of
schools may be utilized. School dismissals shall remain unchanged. The
delayed opening may also be used for non-weather type emergencies.
Notice of the delayed opening will be made as early as possible and
broadcast on the radio and television stations listed below.
If, after school opens, it appears that the roads will become hazardous
later in the day, an EARLY DISMISSAL may be scheduled and afterschool activities may be canceled. Based on the day's weather reports
and weather conditions, parents/guardians should anticipate an early
dismissal and tune in to one of the designated stations for specific
details.
Parents or guardians should arrange to be home or to have a safe place
to which children can go until parents or guardians can return home.
Should an early dismissal become necessary, high school and middle
school students will be dismissed before the elementary children. This
will allow the older students to be home when the younger children
arrive. Tune to one of the following stations for specific information
regarding school closings, delayed openings or early dismissals:
WALK (1370 AM, 97.5 FM), WBLI (106.1 FM), WBAB (102.3 FM),
FOX 5 (TV) and NEWS 12 (TV).

District Voting
Each year, the William Floyd School District presents a budget
for voter approval. This year, the budget vote is scheduled for
Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Prior to the vote, a detailed description
of the budget is sent home to district residents. Residents must
be registered in order to vote and can do so at the William Floyd
District Office or at any school building up until May 14, 2015.
Registration will continue throughout the day of the vote at the
Suffolk County Board of Elections. Voter eligibility requires that
you are a United States citizen, at least 18 years of age and a
district resident for at least 30 days.
Tax Information
New York State income tax forms require that you list the name
and code number of your school district. Please note that our
district is listed as MASTIC BEACH (WILLIAM FLOYD) and our
CODE is 381. It is crucial that you accurately list this information
so that our district can receive the appropriate amount of state
aid.

seeks to provide the State’s public elementary and secondary
school students with a safe and supportive environment free
from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment and
bullying on school property, a school bus and/or at a school

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age certain rights with respect to the student’s education records. These
rights are:
1) The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the school receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the school principal a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The school official will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or
eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.
2) The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes is inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students
may ask the school to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the school principal, clearly identify the part of the record that they
want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the school will
notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request of the amendment. Additional information regarding the
hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing.
3) The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a
person employed by the school as an administrator, supervisor, instructor or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a
person serving on the School Board, etc. A school official also may include a volunteer or contractor outside of the school who performs an institutional service or function
for which the school would otherwise use its own employees and who is under the direct control of the school with respect to the use and maintenance of PII from education
records, such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist; a parent or student volunteering to serve on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance
committee; or a parent, student or other volunteer assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the
official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. FERPA requires a school district to make a reasonable attempt to notify the
parent or eligible student of the request unless it states that it intends to forward records on request.
4) The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning failures by the school to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of
the office that administers FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20202-5901.
Release of Directory Information
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal law, requires that the William Floyd School District, with certain exceptions, obtain your written consent prior
to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child’s education records. However, the William Floyd School District may disclose appropriately designated
“directory information” without written consent, unless a parent or guardian has advised the district to the contrary in accordance with district procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the William Floyd School District to include this type of information from a student’s records in certain school publications. Examples
include: district website; district-operated social media accounts; newsletter; a playbill showing a student’s role in a drama production; the annual yearbook; honor roll or
other recognition lists; graduation programs; and sports activity sheets, such as for wrestling, which shows weight and height of team members, etc.
Directory information, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed to outside organizations
without a parent’s prior written consent. Outside organizations include, but are not limited to: companies that manufacture class rings, publish yearbooks, news and media
outlets, etc. In addition, two federal laws require Local Education Agencies (LEAs) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to
provide military recruiters, upon request, with three information categories -- names, addresses and telephone listings -- unless parents have advised the LEA that they do not
want their student’s information disclosed to military recruiters without prior written consent.* With the exception of disclosure to military recruiters, directory information
shall only be available to school affiliated organizations, members of the news media, and other persons and entities who, in the judgment and discretion of the Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designees, will utilize such directory information for purposes that are consistent with the District’s educational mission, as well as the safety and
best interests of the District’s current and former students.
If you do not wish the William Floyd School District to disclose directory information from your child’s education records without prior written consent, the district must be
notified in writing by October 1 of each school year. The William Floyd School District has designated the following information as directory information: student’s name,
address, telephone listing, electronic mail address, likeness (for possible use in video and still images for district website and social media accounts), age, major field of study,
dates of attendance, grade level, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, the most recent education agency
or institution attended, degrees, honors and awards received.
*These laws are: Section 9528 of the ESEA (20 U.S.C. 7908), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (P.L. 107-110), the education bill, and 10 U.S.C. 503, as amended by Section 544, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002 (P.L. 107-107), the legislation that provides funding for the Nation’s Armed Forces.
Registration of New Students
Registration for all new students to the district takes place in the
Central Registration Office (located next to the District Office)
between the hours of 8 am to 1 pm on all regularly scheduled
school days with the exception of the first day of student attendance, September 2, 2014.
Children must be five years of age before December 1, 2013 in
order to register for the 2014-2015 school year. At the time of
registration, parents or legal guardians must present:
1) Valid photo identification;
2) The child’s original birth certificate;
3) Proof of William Floyd School district residency such as a current utility bill addressed to the parent/guardian; tax bill; deed;
mortgage statement or notarized lease with supporting documentation from the landlord;
4) Proof of immunizations: all enrolling children must provide
documentation for polio; diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis;
measles, mumps and rubella; hepatitis B vaccine; and varicella
(chicken pox) vaccine.
Please be aware that New York State has recently revised the
immunization requirements for school attendance. The school
nurses will advise parents if their children require additional immunizations to comply with the new regulations.
All physician immunization records must be
signed and stamped by a doctor’s office.
Parent Teacher Organizations
Each of our schools has a Parent Teacher Organization
(PTO) and a Special Education Parent Teacher Organization (SEPTO). These PTO and SEPTO organizations
play an active role in many important facets of our
children’s education. The William Floyd School District
encourages all parents to get involved and join the
PTO and/or SEPTO. For further information, please call
any school building.
Kindergarten Pre-Registration
Pre-registration for kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year will
begin on the dates listed below in the Central Registration Office. If
your child is not currently enrolled in a district UPK, Pre-Kindergarten
or Special Education Pre-Kindergarten program, please call the Central Registration office at 874-1390 to check your child’s kindergarten
enrollment status. In order for your child to be eligible for kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year, he or she must be five years of age
on or before December 1, 2014. At the time of registration, a parent or
legal guardian must present the child’s original birth certificate, proof
of William Floyd School District residency, and proof of immunizations for polio; diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis; measles, mumps and
rubella; hepatitis B; and varicella (chicken pox) vaccine. Immunization
records must be signed and stamped by the child’s physician. Please
note that beginning on July 1, 2014, kindergarten students must have
two (2) varicella vaccines for admission to school.

Athletic Participation Requirement
Before any student will be permitted to participate in the William
Floyd interscholastic program of the secondary schools, a sports
physical examination must be taken and the student must secure
approval for participation. No student will be permitted to practice
or participate until the required physical examination has been
completed. There will be no exceptions to this requirement. To avoid
delay in being able to participate, any student new to the district
should have the exam completed by his or her family physician on
a sports physical form. These forms may be obtained in the athletic
director’s office, nurses’ offices or the district website, www.wfsd.k12.
ny.us, under Athletics. WF students must also meet academic eligibility to play interscholastic sports. Please check the Athletics portion
of the website for the William Floyd Interscholastic Athletic Eligibility
Policy.

Immunization
New York State Public Health Law, Section 2164, requires
that children attending public schools must be immunized
against measles, rubella, polio, diphtheria pertussis and tetanus, mumps, varicella and hepatitis B. Children (up to their
fifth birthday) enrolled in the pre-kindergarten program are
required to show proof of immunization against Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) and the Pneumococcal Conjucate
Vaccine (PCV). All students entering 6th grade who are at
least 11 years old must provide proof of a Tdap booster. If
the child enters 6th grade at the age of 10, he/she must receive the shot when he/she turns 11. All students in grades
seven through 12 must provide proof of a Tdap booster.
All physician immunization records must be
signed and stamped by a doctor’s office.
Medical Examinations
New York State Education Law requires a medical examination of
children who are new entrants to the district and to students in
grades K, 2, 4, 7 and 10. While a school physical is available to
students in these grades, we believe it is in the best interest of
your child’s health to have this examination performed by your
family physician who has the history available and is able to
administer the necessary immunizations.
As per NY State Education Law, any student who has not submitted a private physician’s physical within 30 days of starting school
will be examined by the school physician. The forms for private
physicals are available in each school’s nurse’s office and on the
district’s website under District, Student Health. An annual medical examination is recommended for all adults.
Medication During School Hours
Medication may be administered during school hours only under the
following conditions:
1) The parent may come to the nurse’s office with the medication and
give it to the child at the appointed time.
2) A written prescription from the doctor has been received by the nurse,
a written statement from the parent requesting administration of the
medication is on file, and the medication is in a properly labeled
original container.
This rule also applies to nonprescription medications. Parents must pick up
all unused medication before the last day of school or it will be discarded.

Attendance is essential for success in school. Parents, students and
school personnel share the responsibility of encouraging regular and
prompt attendance. If a child must miss a school day, make sure that
he or she makes up all class and homework assignments. If a student
must be absent for an extended period, contact the school to make
alternate arrangements to educate your child.
No Child Left Behind Parents’ Right to Know

Security Department
Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the parents or guardians of
students attending Title I schools may request information regarding the
professional qualifications of their child’s classroom teacher, teaching
assistant and paraprofessional staff. Please contact your child’s building
principal if you have a question regarding the professional qualifications of faculty, teaching assistants and paraprofessional staff members,
including the following:
The William Floyd School District Security Department is on duty 24 hours
per day, seven days per week, throughout the year including holidays. If
you need to contact the Security Department for any reason, please call
874-1277.
If you need to report an emergency, please call 911 immediately
before calling the Security Department.
A. Whether the teacher has met state certification criteria for the
grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides
instruction;
B. Whether the teacher is teaching under the emergency or other
provisional status through which state certification criteria has
been waived;
C. The baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other
graduate certificate of degree held by the teacher, and the field of
discipline of the certification or degree;
D. Whether the child is provided services by a teaching assistant or
paraprofessional and, if so, their qualifications.
Written Complaint and Appeal Procedures
As required by Title XIV, General Provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the New York State Education Department
(NYSED) has adopted procedures for receiving and resolving complaints
and for resolving appeals from decisions of Local Education Agencies
(LEAs).
Information regarding the NYSED “Written Complaint and Appeal Procedures” concerning violations of the ESEA Title I, Parts A, C and D, or of the
General Education Provisions Act; or of Section 100.2(ee) Academic Intervention Services of the regulations of the Commissioner of Education are

The William Floyd School District lists on its website registered sex offenders that are made available by the local police department. Please note
that only sex offenders posted during the last 12 months will be available

Section 504 Policy Notice
The William Floyd School District affirms its compliance with those
sections of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 dealing with program accessibility. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in federally assisted
programs or activities solely on the basis of disability. The district shall
make its programs and facilities accessible to all of its students with
disabilities.
The district shall also identify, evaluate and extend to every qualified
student with a disability, under Section 504, a free, appropriate public education, including modifications, accommodations, specialized
instruction or related aids and services, as deemed necessary to meet
their educational needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled
students are met. The district official responsible for coordination of
activities relating to compliance with Section 504 is the Superintendent
of Schools.

The William Floyd School District offers a full range of services
for children with disabilities. Please call the office of Special
Education at 874-1133 or visit the William Floyd School District
website, www.wfsd.k12.ny.us, for further information on Special
Education Services.
The goal of the William Floyd School District Special Education
Department is to promote students’ academic, physical and
social/emotional growth in a safe, nurturing environment and
to allow students an opportunity to develop all facets of their
character to the fullest potential.
The Office of Special Education provides a full range of services
to all children ages three to 21 that have been identified and
evaluated in accordance with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act; PL.94142). As such, when students have difficulty
in school despite attempts at remediation through researchbased early intervention services, school personnel or parents
can submit a request for an evaluation to the building principal
or directly to the Committee on Special Education (CSE).
Parents and early childhood educators who are concerned
about a preschooler’s development can submit a request for
evaluation to the Committee on Preschool Special Education
(CPSE). The evaluation, under CSE or CPSE, will include any procedures, tests, assessments or observations given to determine
whether the student has an educational disability and is eligible
for special education and/or related services. Recommendations
from this evaluation may or may not include classification of the
child as a student with a disability.
All students, including those with disabilities, are encouraged to
participate in interscholastic programs. Contact your building
principal or the Special Education Office at 874-1133 for further
information.
Federal and State Requirements
Regarding Special Education Services for
Parentally-Placed Nonpublic School
Children
If you have placed your child in a nonpublic school, and while the
child is enrolled in that school, you suspect that the student has a
disability, you must contact the school district where the nonpublic school is located to request evaluation to determine your child’s
eligibility for special education services.
We must have your written consent in order for us to provide information (such as your child's Individualized Educational Program or
IEP) to the school district where the nonpublic school is located.
If you place your child in a nonpublic school and wish your child to
receive special education services while enrolled in that school, you
must request those services in writing no later than June 1 before
the school year in which services are to be provided.
If the nonpublic school where you place your child is located within
the geographic boundaries of another public school district, the
public school district in which the nonpublic school is located will
arrange for and provide the recommended services for your child.
The personnel and locations for the delivery of those services will
be determined by that school district. Federal and State law requires
this.
If this applies to you, please contact the Special Education Office at
874-1133 to pick up a Parent Nonpublic School Acknowledgment/
Consent Form.
Transportation requests from your child’s home to the nonpublic
school should continue to be submitted to the William Floyd School
District by April 1 of the school year before transportation is to be
provided. See page 4 of this calendar: “Private, Parochial and Charter
School Transportation.”
breakfast/lunch program
Emergency Management Plan
Elementary and secondary students may purchase healthy and
nutritious hot or cold meals in our district’s schools. A free- and
reduced-cost breakfast and lunch program is available to students
who qualify. Elementary school lunch is $1.50 and middle school
and high school lunch is $1.60. Breakfast prices are .75¢ for elementary and .85¢ for the middle schools and high school. For further

The William Floyd School District and each of its eight schools maintains an
Emergency Management Plan to ensure the safety and health of students
and staff. The plan has four prime emergency response actions which are
related to students, staff and facilities -- school cancellation, early dismissal,
evacuation and sheltering. The Superintendent of Schools is the districtwide emergency coordinator and each principal is the individual school
building’s emergency coordinator. Students generally are familiar with a
number of aspects related to school emergency plans. Schools conduct a
dozen fire drills and several school bus safety drills each year to highlight
the need to be prepared to respond to emergencies. Announcements
about William Floyd’s response to hazardous weather, such as school closings, are made over local radio and television stations, and the district
website. The emergency plan, as per the Commissioner of Education’s
regulations, also requires an annual drill which tests the early dismissal and
sheltering aspects of the plan. These drills are scheduled by each building
principal and specific information regarding drills will be sent to parents.
Special programs in the schools, as well as health and safety classroom instruction, also seek to provide students with an awareness and knowledge
of responses to varied emergencies. For further information, contact Janet

• Free/reduced meal applications for the 2014-2015 school year are
due by October 16, 2014 for existing students (to avoid
interruption of benefits). However, applications may be filled out
at any time during the school year.
• Applications are mailed home and are also available to be printed
on the district website at www.wfsd.k12.ny.us.
• Applications can also be filled out online on the district website,
www.wfsd.k12.ny.us beginning on September 2, 2014.
• Parents can sign up for MyPaymentsPlus through the William
Floyd website or directly at www.mypaymentsplus.com, which can
be used to pre-fund meal accounts and track student purchases.
Pesticide Notification
APPR Disclosure
A New York State law went into effect July 1, 2001, requiring schools
to inform all staff, parents and guardians that pesticides may be used
at various times throughout the school year. We are required to maintain a list of staff or parents who wish to receive 48-hour prior written
notice of pesticide applications. If you would like to be notified or
have any other questions regarding the legislation, please contact
Herb Hodge at 874-1715.
In compliance with New York State law and the policy approved by the William Floyd Board of Education, parents interested in reviewing the Annual
Professional Performance Review (APPR) of their child’s classroom teacher
or principal may request the final quality rating and composite effectiveness score directly from either the school (for teachers) or district office
(for principals). For more information, please refer to the district website at
