TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JUNE 19, 2016
A Word from
Adoration will close at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21st.
Our Pastor Fr. Ron Weissbeck
Due to the Mass time change for our Feast Day celebration
on Saturday, June 25th, confessions will begin at 2:30 p.m.
My dear family in Christ,
The second reading from Paul’s letter to the
Galatians states that “All are one in Christ Jesus”
(Galatians 3:28). This is given greater clarity for us this
Sunday as our Shepherd, Archbishop Aquila, has come for
the sacrament of confirmation. The Archbishop is the
person who brings into focus what makes us Catholics, our
unity in the Body of Christ. Every time we pray the
Eucharistic prayer we include our Holy Father, Francis,
and the Archbishop, Samuel. Since they are always
mentioned as part of the Eucharistic prayer we draw from
their ministry and office the unity which has been
established.
We always pray for our shepherd but this is a clear
indication of what this unity expresses; we are one in
Christ and, concretely, this is embodied in the bishop. He
is coming to St. John’s for the conferring of the “Order of
Confirmation”. Since it is the bishop who is the ordinary
minister of this sacrament the import of the action of the
Holy Spirit is offered more clearly. The bishop is the
minister who continues the action first entrusted to the
Apostles after the resurrection. He carries this on with the
sacrament of confirmation.
Confirmation, then, is the empowerment to live
concretely, with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the faith that
has been handed on since the early church. These
individuals who are anointed with the Holy Spirit have
completed the sacraments of initiation, they are full
members of the church. Therefore, this membership needs
to be deepened and practiced in daily life. This is not just
wishful thinking but the commitment that is made in this
sacramental action.
Having received these sacraments they are called
upon to deepen the participation in the life of discipleship
with a clearer understanding of the Eucharist. It is the
Eucharist which is the ongoing sacrament of living out our
faith.
We welcome our bishop who is the main, ordinary
ministers of the divine mysteries; being one with him today
clarifies and deepens our participation and understand of
our worship.
Finally, as it is “Father’s Day” I extend to all
fathers the graciousness of our heavenly Father who has
given us the Son to be members of the community of faith.
Did you know that June 20, the first day of summer, is
National eGiving Day?
Saint John the Baptist can take particular joy in
this celebration, as the response to eGiving in our church
has been wonderful.
To build on this success, I am setting a National
eGiving Day Challenge. My goal is for Saint John the
Baptist families to put envelopes on a permanent summer
vacation and make the switch to eGiving. This is
especially important in the summer months, when many
families may be out of town some weekends and Saint
John the Baptist does not receive their envelopes. It’s easy
for people to forget to catch up once they’re back, and our
weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result – making it
harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our
year-round ministries.
The more families who welcome the beginning of
summer by taking this National eGiving Day Challenge,
the more consistency and predictable our offertory will be
month after month – and this will help us do even more to
spread Christ’s love throughout the community.
Being part of this challenge is simple: Visit
www.faithdirect.net and use our church code: CO509
Thank you for your continued support of our
parish family with your time and talents as well as
treasure!
God Bless You,
Fr. Ron

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist
On June 24th the universal church celebrates the
feast of the nativity of St. John the Baptist, our parish
Patron. He was a forerunner or herald of Christ and spoke
fervently, with a prophet’s zeal, of the need to repent and to
prepare for the coming of the Messiah. Many thought he
might be the Messiah or Elijah. When asked who he was,
he replied,” I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness.
‘Make straight the way of the Lord’ (John 1:23). John’s
was the voice, but the Lord, from the beginning, was the
Word. John was a voice for his time, but Christ is the
eternal Word from the beginning.” Just as John the Baptist,
zealous for the Lord, spoke boldly of the coming Messiah,
so too can we speak boldly of the need to repent and
change our ways so that all of us might more fully receive
the graces which allow us to live holy lives of service to
God and our neighbor. By living out our faith on a daily
basis, we become a voice for our time. Making a conscious
effort to participate more frequently in the sacraments,
especially Mass, spending more time with our Lord in
prayer and reading scripture daily witnesses to the primacy
of Christ in our lives and opens others to hear our voice and
change their lives. Each of us have chosen different paths
in life but all of us, as Christians, have been called to live
out the gospel and proclaim in word and deed the good
news of Jesus Christ.
If you feel that you are being called to proclaim the
kingdom of God by living out your faith each day as a
Christian witness to others and desire to grow in your
baptismal call to holiness as a lay person, please contact the
Lay Carmelite Community at St. John the Baptist Catholic
Church. Call Sherri at 303-908-6102 or Walt at
303-532-8897. We meet in the St. Catherine room on the
2nd Saturday of each month.
HOPE AND HEALING AFTER
AN ABORTION. Pope Francis
has called this year, the Year of
Mercy. Please consider attending
the Rachel’s Vineyard Catholic
Retreat which addresses the soul
wounds that run deep in many women and men who are
suffering with the psychological or spiritual pain of
abortion. These, as well as memories of condemnation,
abandonment, pain, and confusion are handled with care
and replaced by the healing presence, love, and Mercy of
Jesus Christ. The next retreat will be held the weekend of
July 15-17, 2016. Contact Lori at 303-904-7414 or Edie at
303-775-4108. For more information and testimonies of
healing go to www.rvrcolorado.org or
www.rachelsvineyard.org. Participation is completely
confidential. The Deadline is July 11th.
Retreat Format and Background: Rachel’s
Vineyard Retreat manual has an imprimatur from the
Catholic Church. Father Larry Sanders of the
Redemptorist Order will be available throughout the
weekend to meet with participants individually and for the
Sacrament of Reconciliation, Adoration and Mass on
Sunday. A licensed, trained counselor will be
co-facilitating the retreat. This Catholic retreat is suitable
for all Christian faiths and offers a way for women and
men to find the healing love of their God to help them
overcome the pain associated with having had an abortion.

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JUNE 19, 2016
More Good News...
Meet the James Family...
We are Jeff and Hillary James, our children Gideon,
Chiri and Jasper go to St. John's school. We have been in
the parish for about 3 years. We work for a non-profit
called Lalmba Association. Lalmba's founder is Deacon
Hugh Downey, a deacon here in the Archdiocese of
Denver. Lalmba partners with some of the poorest Catholic
dioceses in Africa to provide health care, orphan care and
microfinance to impoverished rural communities. Right
now we serve in communities in Kenya and Ethiopia. We
are participating in the Archdiocese mission appeal program,
and this year will be speaking about Lalmba at masses at St.
Francis of Assisi the weekend of June 18. We live near to
St. John's and so can walk to church. Jeff is in the Knights
of Columbus and Hillary is a lector and Eucharistic
minister. We love being a part of the St. John's family.
Mark your calendar’s! Our St. John's Feast
Day is fast approaching. Please join us on
Saturday, June 25th.
Mass begins at 4:00 p.m.
followed by a parish picnic
in our courtyard.
Please watch the
bulletin for more details.
See you there!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s almost midsummer day! One of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar occurs this week. There are
only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and the Nativity of Saint John
the Baptist on June 24. Friday’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own
child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions
around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at
midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light
reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, kindling “St. John’s Fires” in
the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the
St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in
San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor
John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach this week and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a
tradition!

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
llegan a ubicarlo en el lugar que realmente le corresponde;
primero nuestro bien, nuestra comodidad, nuestro beneficio.
a nosotros mismos. ¡Qué difícil resulta negarnos a nosotros
mismos!
nuestros hermanos, nuestros esposos o esposas, nuestros
realizar.
