From The Editor
GRO-FAITH Ministries
What a blessing it is to share this
issue of GRAMS with you! I am
delighted because some of my relatives are featured (Alexander, Benn,
Wilkes/Black History Fact). There
is exciting news about the goings-on
at a Norfolk elementary school, as
well as highlights of a week-long
trip that I had...vicariously, of
course. There are other items of interest, too— like the article about
the amazing “almost 84-year-old
man, and the “Chesapeake Recycles” notice that will surely be of
benefit to residents.
At any rate, I give God the glory for allowing me to cross paths
with so many positive and interesting people, and you can be assured that as I learn about them, I will definitely tell YOU about
them!!
Just a reminder: The July issue will feature graduates and an information form can be found in this issue, as well as on the web site
(web address below). You may copy the form (Page 17) or you
may download it from the web site. Please complete it and submit
it via email, fax, or the postal service by June 15th. Also, please let
us know if any of your graduates are age 70-plus, if any are siblings
(definitely, twins), or if any are parent and child. Questions? Just
give me a call. (Contact information listed below).

Let’s Learn More
About Black History
By L.F. Wilkes
Who was the first African American
playwright to win a Pulitzer Prize?
The answer can be found elsewhere in
this issue.
When we arrive at the month
of June it means that we are onehalf through our year. The calendar documents it, but it seems
hard to accept. We better try to
use our time wisely. Dr. Seuss,
the children's book author, even
reminds our little ones with his
quips: "How did it get so late so
soon? It's night before it's afternoon. December is here before it's June. My goodness, how the time has flewn. How did it get late so
soon?"
These are the words of a contemporary poet. His
popularity has come, and ultimately will go. The
word of God speaks to the same theme with an eternal perspective. "The days of our years are three
score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they
be four score years, yet is there strength, labor, and
sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away....So
teach us to number our days, that we may apply our
hearts unto wisdom." (Psalms 90:10 and 90:12)
The bottom line is, time flies, and we don't have it
to waste. Let's use it wisely. Speaking of using time
wisely, you might gain some legal insight if you tune
in to some legal discussion and advice on the radio
for "Hampton Roads Weekly" on the third Saturday
morning of the month when Attorney Eric
Moody and his law partner, Attorney Lori Butts, will
give legal advice on air. His next appearance will be
on June 15 at 7 a.m. on WKUS, 92.1 FM, and replayed on 102.9 FM, 105.3 FM, and 107.7 FM on
Sunday June 16 at 9 a.m. He has over thirty six
years of experience as a lawyer and he has
even served as a judge.
Also, Hampton University features the attorney in a
program on their campus radio station, WHOV 88.1
FM, on the first Thursday of the month, this
month on June 6 at Noon, for a live legal question
and answer program with Cheryl Wilkerson called "It's The Law." For those out of town,
the programs can be heard streaming live at the following web sites:

Jason Taylor and Sharee Deaton were united
in holy matrimony on Saturday, May 18, 2013
at First Baptist Church, Berkley. The bride is
a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Deaton,
Sr. of Chesapeake, and the granddaughter of
Mrs. Marilyn Hill and Mr. Christopher Smith,
also of Chesapeake. The groom is the son of
Mrs. Regina Taylor of Chesapeake and the
late Mr. Michael Taylor.
May and June are very special months for Colonel Joseph
Alexander (U.S. Army, retired) of Goodyear, Arizona. In May,
he celebrated his 10th anniversary as the recipient of a new
heart, and in June—on June 7th, to be exact, he will celebrate his
75th birthday. What a blessing!
A native of Norfolk County, Virginia (now Chesapeake), Joseph had long been aware of his family history of heart conditions. When he experienced serious heart problems in January
2003, he was placed Number 3 on the waiting list for a transplant. Three months later, he experienced congenital heart failure and was hospitalized at Fairfax Medical Hospital in Fairfax,
Virginia. At that time, the Alexandria, Virginia resident was
upgraded to Number 1 on the list because of the seriousness of
his condition. On May 5, 2003, Joseph received the news that a
new heart had become available!
Edrena, his lovely wife of 28 years, relates that his surgery
began at 7 p.m. on May 5, and 11 physicians performed the
nearly eight-hour operation. “We do not know the age or sex of
the donor, but we are so appreciative—and blessed,” she added.
The years have been wonderful for Joseph and Edrena. The
couple moved to Arizona about a year after the transplant and
without a doubt, they both agree that the warmer climate is
simply delightful. Joseph acknowledges that he is truly grateful
to God for the blessings of each new day.
May God be glorified for this Ten Year Celebration, and we
pray that He will continue to bless Joseph and Edrena!
For Tidewater-area McDonalds and Alexanders, Joseph is the son of the late Joe and Bonnie Alexander,
and a nephew of the late Will Alexander and Thomas Alexander.
“First Lady” Jacqueline Wilson (wife
of the late founder) and Theresa Wilson portray a “church lady” inviting a
neighbor to Worship Service during
the comical play.
Elder Sarah Eason Williams and the Church of the Living God
Center for Change congregation in Chesapeake made it a
point to show appreciation to some special individuals on
Saturday, May 18. At 4 p.m. on this date, the CLG family
hosted it’s First Annual Partner’s Dinner and invited persons “who have been a blessing” to the ministry since it was
founded by the late Rev. Vernon Wilson 11 years ago.
Warm words of appreciation were shared by the
Pastor and in addition to enjoying a meal fit for a king,
guests were serenaded by the melodious voices of the
CLG Praise Team. These gifted singers were accompanied by their Minister of Music, Rev. Edward “Peterman” Wilson. A
skit written by the multi-talented Rev. Wilson was also presented.
This was a wonderful evening of food, fun, and fellowship, and each
honoree also received a “CLG Partner” memento (shown at right).

The past few months have been brimming with excitement for
Principal Sarah Peoples-Perry and the faculty, staff, and students
at Campostella Elementary School in Norfolk, Virginia. A
S.T.E.M. Education site, the school exposes students to Science,
Technology, Pre-Engineering, and Mathematics, under the mentorship of U.S. Navy engineers. Actually, for about ten weeks,
Mrs. Tracy Beckford and Mrs. Clara Hill-Potter’s fifth-grade
class worked diligently on a special project with the engineers—
they built underwater robotic devices, or sea perches, and some
of the devices were entered into a competition in Newport News,
Virginia.
Two three-member teams were selected for the Tidewater Regional Competition, which was held at the Midtown Aquatics
Center in April. Much to their delight—and to the surprise of
other contestants and judges, Campostella students placed first
overall!
After this grand victory, the students prepared for their second
competition by operating their sea perches in the pool at Camp
Young in Chesapeake and in the one located in the Huntersville section of Norfolk. When May 17 rolled around, the
group, accompanied by Mrs. Beckford, Mrs. Hill-Potter, Mrs.
Nyla Nash Jackson (S.T.E.M. teacher) and Mr. Todd Davis
(parent liaison), boarded a plane and headed to Indianapolis,
Indiana.
While they did not place during this competition, one student
says that “this was the most fun losing because we learned so
much!” Of course, flying was quite an experience, and when
that is paired with meeting and competing with students from as
far away as Puerto Rico, California, Hawaii…and finding time
to do a little sight-seeing, returning without a win is not so bad!
Students also had an opportunity to view many of the entries.
Teachers related that the apparatus constructed by their fifthgraders was a standard design and that several modified designs
were entered by high school students.
Hats off to Principal Peoples-Perry, her faculty, staff, and students for
their exceptional accomplishment, and keep up the great work!!
May God bless C.E.S. educators with whatever they need
And a commitment to remind each student that he can succeed!
May each student be receptive, and always try
To be a good listener, and to reach for the sky!!

News competition. Back row: Dr. L. Foster of Norfolk Public Schools,

Mr. Eugene Tolbert of Portsmouth, Virginia is
amazing! At 83 years of age—he will be 84 in
August—this agile man is the one to call when
your organ is not working properly.
Mr. Tolbert was born in Louisiana and in 1939
(when he was 11 years old), his family moved to
New York. Years later, as an electrical engineer
and an Army veteran, he was hired by Sperry-Rand,
a major electronics company. “I only worked there
for a year,” he recalled. After leaving the company,
he opened his own business and repaired
“televisions, radios, and anything electronic.”
Mr. Tolbert says that he has always enjoyed tinkering with gadgets...he even built his first television
set in 1950 and nine years later, he built his first
organ…
His fascination with the organ gave him the training he needed to become very much in demand as a
repairman. Large organs, small organs...in homes
and in churches...whenever and wherever duty
called, he went. He also assisted in the installation
of satellite systems for radio stations and worked
in other electronic-related fields.
In addition to repairing organs, he is always ready
to provide musical services. “I’ve played for
churches since the ’60s, and I just love to sing, says
Mr. Tolbert. He hastens to add that his music is a
gift from God.
Currently, Mr. Tolbert and his wife of nearly 20
years (Mealie) reside in Portsmouth. He has seven
children (he proudly says that five of them are musicians), and she has two.
So...if you have a Hammond or a Baldwin,
And it is in disrepair,
Or perhaps a Rodgers or an Allen,
Please be aware
That Eugene Tolbert
Can fix it speedily:
Call him at 487-1643!
May God continue to bless you and your family,
Mr. Tolbert!

Breakfast Room Restaurant then departed for the various villages. Christian fun and fellowship abounded
throughout the trip.
We visited the JFK Museum, the
Kennedy and Korean Memorials at Hyannis then went on to Sandwich, the
Cape’s oldest town where we viewed
the Grist Mill and Shawme Pond, tasted water from the “fountain of youth”,

then dinner. Next we visited Woods
Hole where we took the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, a storybook island
where we viewed the colorful Victorian
gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs and
toured the African American Heritage
Trail. We visited the outer Cape village of Chatham, its Lighthouse and
Salt Pond Visitors Center then proceeded to Provincetown, an art mecca for
sightseeing and shopping.
The food, especially the seafood was
exquisite. We sampled all manner of
sea bounty including Cape Lobster,
tender scallops and succulent clams
with bellies intact. Our best dining was
a five course lobster dinner at the Whitman House Restaurant, established in
1894.
We will all remember the cranberry
bogs, the kettle holes, the salt marsh
ponds and the green foliage that literally caressed our bus as we toured the
area.
Special kudos to our trip planners,
Loretta Young, Freida Latimer and
Gloria Basnight and to our president,
Ronald Johnson, for appointing them to
the task.

Publishing The Positive
JESUS CHRIST IS THE WAY
“Living right” is not just about being good and doing good...It is about accepting Christ and His Plan of Salvation. If you want to know Him, it ‘s
as easy as A, B, C…
Acknowledge that you are a sinner and in need of a Savior
“All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)
Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, paid the price for your sins when He gave His life on
the cross and God raised Him from the dead
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
Confess your sins by surrendering your life to Jesus, seeking His forgiveness, and turning away from a life of sin
"For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
(Romans 10:10)
To grow in Christ, become united with a Bible-believing church where you can let down your spiritual roots. Talk to God through prayer; listen
to His voice as you read His Word; spread His Word by telling others about Him.
