How to turn a stone
into a sparkling star
Stars, patience, perseverance
Have you ever heard of the guardians of the
stars? They live far away, beyond the very last
dwarf planet. These guardians are very important,
because they make sure that the sky is filled with
sparkling stars every night. But those stars start out
as rocks…
Mack gets a stone on his fourth birthday. But how
does his stone become a star? And how many more
times does he have to try before he will succeed?

Where is nowhere?
Friendship, searching, being missed
For a very long time, Dawn had been
fascinated with NOWHERE. When something
got lost at home her mother always said: ‘I
can’t find it. It’s nowhere!’
When they found it again, Dawn had always
wondered where it had been.
That’s why, one day, she decided she would
leave. She took the money from her piggy
bank and took off. But then she got lost…

A basket filled
with stories
Fantasy, witches, curiosity
Madam Sophie is a witch, but she isn’t scary and
not dangerous at all. She’s a story witch. She’s
always carrying a basket, filled with things that
she’s found. Like a little wing. It belonged to an
elf, she says. And mermaid scales too, right out of
the trash. And what kind of stone is that…? You
think of something!

A monster of a
birthday party
Birthday, monsters
Carl knows all there is to know about adventures.
But to join them, that wasn’t his thing. That’s
why no one wants to join his birthday theme:
even though it will be a monster party, all his
class mates think it will be boring. And indeed,
when the party has started, it’s more cosy than
scary. Untill a stranger is coming in…

Looking for a
little friend
Perseverance, searching, friendship
Ralph gets a little rabbit for his birthday. But the
next morning, he finds Ronald missing from his
cage. So what do you do? You go after him!
But that’s easier said than done. Ralph works hard
to enlarge the tunnel that Ronald made. Then he
meets Mole, and later every time he puts his head
above the ground, he finds a new surprise. When he
finds Ronald in the end, he would rather stay with
his rabbit friends. Thankfully, Mole does want to
stay with Ralph. So he’s found a new friend after all!

Children with Down
syndrome in the spotlights
Down syndrome, love
Once upon a time there were two royal children.
They were so very sweet. They had a throne, a crown,
a golden bed.
Sometimes they’d start to laugh. All of a sudden.
Their laugh wasn’t just any old laugh. But a genuine
burst of laughter. Anyone who heard them would have
no choice but to join in.
They were special. Just that. A miracle. These two royal
children.
Look, the bird is singing, the first book of Bente Jonker
and Moniek Peek, was esteemed highly.
The text evoked compassion, the illustrations
brought colour en brightness to the story of a little
girl born deaf.
Sweeter than sweet is a beautiful, poetic story that
draws you into the fantasy world of two children
with Down syndrome. Once again the poetic text
and colourful illustrations will touch everyone and
take you into a world that is different.

Saying goodbye in
your own way
Mourning, missing
Everybody deals in another way with loss.
Maybe sometimes it looks like others grieve less.
At least, that is what Dog thinks, but if he listens
and looks around he sees that the other animals
on the farm also miss Farmer.
The illustrations of Helen van Vliet make the
grief of the animals almost tangible. Kristina Van
Remoortel soothes it with her poetical text. In
this way this topic becomes open to discussion
for young children as well.

A sleepover with a seal
The sea, sleepovers, letters in a bottle
Suzy lives on an island, in a cozy little house that’s
all crooked because of the wind. One night, when
it’s particularly stormy, Sealy seeks shelter from
the rain. He wants to do everything that Suzy
does: eat pancakes, take a bath and sleep under a
soft blanket. But he doesn’t like it as much as he
thought he would…
Reading Suzy, you can almost feel the cool ocean
air on your skin!

Jamie’s back!
Sea, mothers, getting lost
In October of last year, De Vier Windstreken
published a revised edition of the much loved book
Jamie the little seal. In a slightly larger size and a
new sprightly design, but with the same endearing
illustrations by Monica Maas, known from her
books about Suzy and Bobby the little bear.
Jamie lives on a sandbank together with the other
seals. One day he decides to go for swim, all alone.
When he get lost he worries he’ll never see his
mum again…
In the back of the book, the reader will find more
on what life is like for little seals like Jamie.

Another adventure
with Jamie!
Sea, animals
Because Jamie the little seal did so well, a second
book about him hits the bookstores this spring:
Jamie and Gull. It features all kinds of sea creatures,
such as a bass, a crab and a little sea horse. So
toddlers can get to know the animals that live in
the ocean.
There’s this gull that keeps calling coo-coo-coo.
Jamie doesn’t know it. He makes fun of the gull and
calls him a “poo gull”. But the black-headed Gull is
having none of that…
SPLAT!
Jamie knows right away what’s happened. He’s
been pooed on!

Amazing stories
in a pool
Imagination, travelling
Ellie thinks her back yard is pretty boring.
“Want to go for a fly?” the crocodile asks.
“Yes, I do,” Ellie says, “to an island.”
Marieke van Ditshuizen made the illustrations by
cutting out the shapes and gluing them onto the
background. The result is a fantastic picture book
with a lot of depth, with tissues as clouds and
sewing thread for the crocodile teeth necklace.

The beginning of an adventurous journey for Ellie.
Her little crocodile pool flies her to far away lands
where she makes new friends. But is it just her
imagination? The fish in the bowl and the necklace
made of crocodile teeth beg to differ…

What a show!
Circus, counting
In a circus there’s a lot to be seen and to
experience: a wolf walks a tight rope, two bears
balance on a ball, three sheep are together a tower
of wool... Children will enjoy counting to ten. On
every page of this colourful picture book there’s a
short poem about the digit.
The illustrations of Els Vlieger are very special.
She starts them on paper and colours them with
a computer. Depth arises by placing patterns,
images and texts in those colours. She’s inspired
by illustrations of the fifties, paisley fabrics, the
wonderful work of Lisbeth Zwerger and old Books.

The charm of a smile...
Fairytale, laughing, love
Beginning of 2012 author and illustrator Coby
Hol has passed away, at the age of 68. To honour
her and her work, The smile of the princess is now
published, a very special book which she made just
before she died.
In this fairytale the princess had a very beautiful
smile. Everyone who saw it for just a moment,
became immediately happy. One day the princess
got captured by a ferocious dragon. Nobody
managed to rescue her and all the happiness
disappeared out of the country. Fortunately a brave
sailor came along and saved her with his magical
dagger. Everyone smiled again when he came back
with her! The sailor received lots of presents from
the sultan, but the one from the princess he loved
most: she smiled, just at him.

Fun to read and knit
Cuddling, knitting
Jacob the knitted monkey loves to cuddle, while
his sister Frannie prefers to dance around with the
bunny twins. When they find a little mouse that
hasn’t been finished, they know exactly what to do:
find a pair of human hands to bring it to life!
The hands they need could belong to a mother or
a grandmother. Using the knitting pattern in the
back of the book, they can knit the little mouse
themselves. And by doing so, make Jacob’s story
come alive.
• The photos of the knitted cuddly toys make for a unique
picture book
• With a knitting pattern of the little mouse in the back of
the book, for experienced knitters

The sun, the sea…
vacation!
Vacation, fear of the unknown
Going on vacation is often a lot of fun, but it can be
a bit scary when you’re a toddler. Things aren’t as
they are at home: the cat can’t come, you have to
sit in the car for a long time and there’s a lot more
water in the sea than there’s in the bath tub. So
what do you do?
With this lift-the-flap book parents can prepare
their child for new situations. You can make sure
you say goodbye to the cat, stop on the way for
a pick nick, and sit on dad’s shoulders. It won’t be
half as scary that way!

“Hooray, I can read” for
older children
The books in the “Hooray, I can read” series are highly
appreciated because of the font that is also suitable
for dyslexic children and all the colourful artwork.
With Escape we introduce the “Hooray, I can read*”
series (with a star), especially meant for children
in the last years of primary school who still have a
problem with reading. In the books in this series
the main character is a bit older than usual, and the
subject connects with the experience of the readers.
In the middle of the night the phone is ringing.
She knows what that means.
She has to run, again.
She runs into the dark night.
The next day Anna falls asleep in class.
Her teacher wants to know what’s up.
Bur she can’t tell, never.
It’s a big secret.
