Amigos de Casa,
With a new president inaugurated, the unrest of the past summer is history;
and we are thankful for that.
School started this month and we are in a different routine than the one
we had during break. Morning devotionals begin at 6:00 a.m., followed by
breakfast, dressing, chores, and out the door by around 7:30. It makes for a
whirlwind of a morning. Maryuri and Nohemy are in kindergarten which
is in the afternoon. They go to kindergarten about the time the other kids
are getting home and eating lunch. Homework, showers, supper,and getting
clothes ready for the next day take up the biggest part of the afternoon.
This year we have students in every grade. Linda is in sixth, Pamela and
Brayan are in fifth. Doris also attends fifth grade. Even though she has
never been to school, Teleton wanted her in school to interact with other
children her age. She cannot do the work, any of it, but hopefullly this
will help her social skills. Antonio (Fito – he thinks he is too grown up for
the name Fito) is in fourth grade, Jackson and Cindy are in third, Ana,
Jose, Daniela and Fernando are all in second and Reina, Sisi and Katty
are in first. In addition, Doris, Reina, Sisi and Maryuri attend some classes
at Teleton and Fernando soon will be attending at Teleton also. Rosy is in
second grade in Manos Felices. Manos Felices is having financial
difficulties and do not know if they can remain open. They are no longer
running a bus and we are taking Rosy all the way to school and picking
her up from school. That has certainly added a challenge to our daily
schedule, but God always provides a way for us to get it done.
A dentist in Tegucigalpa is generously seeing all of the kids, cleaning and
fixing their teeth. I think everyone has seen the dentist once and now we
are doing follow-ups. She has even put braces on Rosy's teeth.
Nohemy's scabies are gone. The eczema on Ana's hands is better, but she is
still seeing the dermatologist for that.
We have had to buy water once already. The dry season is really dry this
year. We are looking into the cost of digging a new well, a deeper well, and
possilby installing an underground cistern.
Meet Reina. Reina came to Casa de Esperanza in October 2006. When she
came to live here, she was known as Monica. Reina was removed from her
home due to extreme poverty. The long term effects of poverty and
malnutrition have taken their toll on Reina. Her paperwork says she will
be 10 on March
. She is extremely small for a 10 year old. She is in first
grade for the second time. I don't know how many times the school will let
her repeat first grade. She has learned several things and continues to
learn. She just can't keep up with the pace that is required at school.
She is a very sweet and happy child. Reina lives in Reina-world. She
loves to play with dolls. The doll she got for Christmas has just about been
loved to death.
Reina has two sisters, Katty and Doris, and one brother, Fernando, that also
live at Casa de Esperanza. She also has another older brother living
somewhere else.
