I realized I’d put my life on hold, expecting to “get better.” When I accepted the fact that I had a chronic condition that I need to manage, I can’t begin to tell you how much freedom I felt. This workshop was a life-changing event. A woman after falling down some stairs and undergoing back surgery ended up quitting her job and spending much of her time in bed because of pain. She enrolled in Living Well and found the tools to take control. After completing the workshop, she started working part time and is able to walk for a mile at a stretch. It helped me realize that my health was in my own hands, she admitted. She added that she no longer expects the doctor to manage her medication or dictate her activity. Caring is Catching She visited her brother often especially during the last two months of his life. Earlier she had watched as the Parish Nurse journeyed with her bother as he learned of his cancer and made treatment decisions. Then there was the Sunday when her brother announced that the cancer was no longer in remission. The active care stepped up, not only to the dying brother, but also to his sister. The night her brother died, a member of the congregation was with her all night to give her support and some respite. After returning home to California, the sister informed her brother’s church that she was signed up to take the Basic Faith Community Nursing Preparation Class through her congregation. The pastor agreed to take the Powerful Tools for Caregiving Class with the hopes of gleaning stuff he could use in his ministry. Soon I became aware that I am a caregiver and found the class tremendously helpful in my personal life, he confessed. He realized that the class is not only a valuable resource he could use as a pastor, but also provides life skills useful in other areas. The hospital chaplain gave a 77-year old women with multiple injuries from a car crash a blue prayer shawl donated by a health ministry program. When I offered to bring her a shawl, her eyes brightened. Blue is her favorite color. Every day she tells me how much she loves it. 7 Stories (cont) Help in the Nick of Time On three different occasions, members of a congregation walked up to the Faith Community Nurse and stated that they were not feeling well. She took their blood pressures and realized that it amounted to a medical emergency. They went directly to the ER, she stated to a newspaper reporter writing a story about parish nursing. A parish nurse who is the wife of a cardiologist shared that her husband came home one day and reported that he had seen a man in his office that day who had come to see him just to get the parish nurses in his church off his back. Is he ever lucky that he came in, the doctor exclaimed. He owes those parish nurses his life! Lives Devoted to Wellness and Wholeness They both attended the Coordinator Class together in 2000. Each have served as parish nurses since the early and mid-90’s. They shared the honor of 2009 Parish Nurse of the Year Award. They are Jean Vanberg and Rachel Hagfeldt. Rachel is the Parish Nurse Coordinator at Albany General Hospital and Parish Nurse at Good Shepherd Lutheran, as well as adjunct faculty of NPNM. Her peers describe her as creative in responding to community needs, helping access health needs at the homeless shelter, organizing community health fairs, and actively supporting the needs of people admitted to the hospital. Rachel’s whole life involves PASSION for Parish Nursing. Jean is the Parish Nurse Coordinator for the Franciscan Health Systems in the Tacoma area and Parish Nurse at Peninsula Lutheran in Gig Harbor, WA. She is described as a dedicated parish nurse and a strong advocate for Parish Nursing. She is known for her compassion for the underserved, administration and organization and her ability to support others while encouraging autonomy. One person summed it up by suggesting, Jean reaches beyond the nursing and supports our whole personhood. 8 Partners in Caring Healthcare Sponsors Corporate Sponsor Healthcare Partners Adventist Medical Center Catholic Health Initiative -Franciscan Health System Peace Health St. Charles Medical Center Foundations St. Joseph Medical Center Providence Health System — Oregon Steward of Mission Resources Zion Lutheran Endowment Organizations/Companies Portland, OR AARP Employment Resources NW Puget Sound Health Ministry Retirement Connections Comfort Keepers NW Senior Resources Thrivant - Clackamas Chapter Thrivent - Tualitan Chapter Thrivent - NE Portland Chapter Colleges/Universities Concordia University Linn-Benton Community College Pacific Lutheran University University of Portland Congregations St. Pius X Church St. Timothy Lutheran Portland, OR Trinity Lutheran Church Dallas, OR Pilgram Lutheran Church Puyallup, WA Trinity Lutheran Church Hillsboro, OR Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Coos Bay, OR Trinty Episcopal Church Bend, OR St. Matthew Lutheran Beaverton, OR St. Andrew Lutheran Beaverton, OR First United Methodist Church Bend, OR 9 Spiral of Caring Circle of Healing ($5,000+) Tom and Stephanie Drees Circle of Hope ($3,000 to 4,999) Bruce Strade Kathy Strade Circle of Peace ($1,000 to $2,999) Alice Danielson Robert & Carolyn Cornie Doug & Lynda McDowell S.
