May - Pine Tree Quilt Guild
The Pine Needle Press Volume 31 Issue 5 ! Pine Tree Quilt Guild May 2014 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since 1984. Published monthly except August. 11255 Banner Mine Way, Nevada City 95959 www.PineTreeQuiltGuild.com May President’s Message Dear Members, I am so honored to be the President of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild in our 30th Anniversary year. We were founded in 1984 and will be celebrating at the Spring Time in the Pines Quilt Show! Many of our Charter Members and Lifetime Members will be showing their quilts at a special exhibit in the Northern Mines Building. These special members have been the back bone of the Guild for 30 years. Show dates are May 3 and 4 with the Gala Celebration on May 2. The hard working Quilt Show Committee, headed by Barbara Ceresa and Joan Mosley with a cast of uncounted helpers are leaving no stones unturned. With over 400 quilts being displayed, vendors, Country Store and much more, this promises to be one of the best quilt shows ever!! For the May 6 evening meeting our Program Chair, Judy Vaughn, has managed to come up with a wonderful idea that promises to be a lot of fun – it’s “Bring Your First Quilt” and your latest quilt night. Just considering the possibilities brings a smile to my face! My own has a good story (yes, I’ll give the short version) and I’m still determined to finish the latest quilt in time to show it to you all. We will be celebrating the Quilt Show that night with cake, water and soda. See you at the Quilt Show, Anne Wilson President From the Editor: Newsleer Submissions Please use the email address [email protected] when submitting articles, pictures or information to me for the newsletter. In the Subject line, please type “NEWSLETTER”. It doesn’t have to be in caps. There is a special ‘smart mailbox’ for all email with ‘newsletter’ in the subject line. Hopefully, this will prevent emails for the newsletter from being lost among all the other email I receive. If you don’t receive acknowledgement of your submission within 48 hours, please email me again or phone me at 530-263-0805. Thanks, Sue Miller Newsletter Editor May Celebration It’s party time! Come celebrate the completion of another successful quilt show. Yummy cakes and drinks for everyone! Members will be our ‘experts’ for the evening. Each member is asked to bring a quilt from their early work and one that shows something more recent. So delve into your work and find a couple that you’d like to share! See you Tuesday, May 6th at 6:30PM at the Grass Valley Charter School! The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! Patchwork Star for May ! Page 5 Emily Cross Full of bounce and a spirited joie de vivre, Emily Cross is just fun to be with! Husband, Lance, a retired firefighter from Carmel Valley, and Nellie, their Chesapeake bay retriever, were also on hand to welcome me. While pondering numerous UFO's in Emily's studio, Lance poked his head in the door and said, “Would you girls like some fresh baked chocolate chip cookies with milk?” Wow!!! Feeling the love, I couldn't help but conclude: two reds make a right! ( Lance is also a redhead.) Married just two years, he's a real keeper! And, Emily has an identical twin sister, Anna, who also quilts. Life is good. . . . . Every spring the sisters meet in dreamy coastal Cambria for a sewing retreat. Their mentor, Rob Appell, is associated with Free Spirit fabric line as a fabric designer and he holds a marketing assignment with Michael Miller fabric line. Rob, his mom and wife sponsor and coordinate two retreats per year there. They hail from The Coon Ball in Morro Bay. Emily just returned from there, bold and energized, sewing up an artisinal cocktail of tightly woven soft beachy-toned solids, new from Michael Miller. Emily says it has been like “ten years of 6th grade camp with bunk beds, not fancy—and they provide all the food.” The cuing table window looks upon a flock of deer grazing casually toward the water's edge. Emily has developed an aitude of risk and reward. Sewing clothing all her life and quilting for 30 years has veed her as an ambitious inventor. Quintessential jean jackets are fashioned from home decorator fabrics. Many heavily quilted loose-fiing jackets are in her bold repertoire. Not to mention knied (or perhaps crocheted) hats, jackets, coats, shawls and scarves filling her closet! Emily is adventuresome. And, by all means, not a one-trick-pony. Her usual color choices embrace terra coa, paprika and buernuts to complement her redheaded complexion. All except a recent diversion to cornflower blue and those ubiquitous beach scenes reminiscent of Santa Barbara where she grew up. Spontaneity is key as art quilting continues to loom large. There's never a missed opportunity to learn new techniques. Emily always saves a buck by quilting her own. Her backs are decorative and sometimes scrappy. In this method, the all-important label can be sewn right into the seam! Secondly, when using a Wonder Under cutout for a tree, just peel off the paper and use it as a template to quilt in a like tree in the adjacent background! I don't think any of us quite know it all. There's always a new tip. Jean Wells and Melinda Buhla have been notable inspirations. Adult Education sewing classes for ten years were a godsend. Emily insists, “I got a break as a mom while raising my kids.” She has two daughters and Lance has two. They all, of course, have received plenty of handmade goodies. Confident and cheerful, Emily has gladdened my heart aplenty. She displays a whirlwind of knowledge in the Soft Crafts department of Ben Franklin. Moreover, I can count on her 100% for break and lunch relief in the Fabric department. It is a winning relationship. And, thank you Lance for the tasty warm cookies. ! ! ! ! ! ! Sandra Bruce gave a presentation that was filled with loving anecdotes of her path to becoming the artistic creator of quilts that she is. thanks, Sandra! Judy Vaughn with Merrilyn Scott’s sample for the June Workshop, Sunshine and Flowers. Remember, May’s presentation is each member’s early and most recent quilts. How have your skills developed? There will be no workshop in May, but you can still join your quilting buddies for Marjorie’s Hexagon Table Topper in Home Workshop. If that doesn’t work for you, come help Community Service and quilt some of the completed sandwiches!Community Service will be on May 7th and 15th. Home Workshop will be May 15th. The Pine Needle Press! ! ! Fourth in a series: ! ! ! Page 8 “Highlights of Guild Positions” JUNIOR QUILTERS May Is A Good Month To Join Junior Quilters! Junior members of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild need to have basic sewing skills, but do not need to be guild members. Children no younger than ten years old, with no exceptions, can join JUNIOR QUILTERS. It is not always the right timing to drop in to Jr Quilters, as we often have ongoing projects, but in May we will be starting a fun new project: A lap quilt that is easy to prepare for-- you need forty strips 2 1/2 inches wide WOF. The squares are easy to put together, with surprising designs revealed. The squares created can be assembled in many ways. Soooo… if you know any child between the ages of 10 and 18 who would like to join us the second Saturday of each month, this is the time to sign up! By the way, even if you don't have a special someone who would like to join us…. do you have any pretty strips you would like to donate? The Juniors had a wonderful visit from Deby from Sierra Sewing -- one of the Guilds Affiliates. She gave all of us a lesson in care of rotary cutters, machine care and oiling. One clever tip that she gave us --- When you are threading your machine, threading the thread through all of the "holes" , fold the end of the thread back on itself about two inches and twist the two threads together --- then you have a stronger, thicker end to "poke" through the guides. Clever huh? Deby, so very generously donated an OmniStitch sewing machine to our group. This machine only does quilting stitches. This will help all us greatly when we are doing free motion quilting! She gave all of us a lesson on how to use the machine and exercises to practice. She always assists us when our sewing machines need a little loving and repair. Thank You Deby! Diane Rockwell Junior Quilters’ Chairperson The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! Page 9 Pine Tree Quilt Guild Scholarship Recipients 2014 The two scholarship recipients for 2014 have been chosen. Each year the Guild furthers its educational goals by the granting of two scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each in memory of Jeanne Gill and Carol Phillips to graduating high school students or current college students who are pursuing study in textile arts, design or other art-related fields. We are pleased to announce Kiana Kraft of Nevada Union High School and Brynn Farwell of Cornish College of the Arts as the winners for 2014. Kiana Kraft was chosen for her excellent academic record, her pursuit of art at Sierra College as well as Nevada Union and her outstanding leadership skills. Kiana has participated in The Link Crew which helps freshmen transition to high school, started the Social Justice club at her school, helped run the campus program Breaking down the Walls and has participated in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Nevada County PAL program. Kiana plans to pursue her leadership and art skills by majoring in Communications and Media Arts at the University of California, Davis. Brynn Farwell has won a scholarship for a second year. She is currently attending Cornish College of the Arts as a freshman with a major in visual arts. Brynn has continued to excel both in academics and in living life to the fullest. Besides getting straight A’s in her course work, she has participated in soccer, swing dancing, Zumba, the Cornish Student Curators group that installs gallery shows, as well as working part time as a tutor and in food service. Brynn will be attending a study abroad program through the University of Washington for a month this summer to study art in Rome, Italy. Brynn has already enrolled at Cornish for her upcoming sophomore year. The Pine Tree Quilt Guild is thrilled to support such promising students in the pursuit of their dreams. " " ! Pat Gillings Scholarship Chairperson WARNING! Beware quilt batt made from recycled plastic bottles! One of the guild members donated some of this batting to Community Services. Somehow it came in contact with an iron and the heat from the iron caused it to melt and form a hard bead. If a quilt were made with this and caught fire, someone could be severely burned. Thanks to Marjorie McConnell for this great information! The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! Page 10 Community Services and Drop In and Sew Guild members have been busy making and donating CS quilt tops which have been made into lots of small, medium, and large quilt sandwiches. Now we need your tender finishing touch – stitch in the ditch, sew from corner to corner, stipple, meander, or whatever you want to try. We meet on Thursday, May 15th, and a sewing only day on Wednesday, May 7 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Grass Valley, 9:00 – 3:00; remaining 2014 calendar dates below (note date change in June to fourth Thursday. Bring your machine (or use one of ours – call/email me to reserve one) and spend the day doing what you love – quilting! Nothing fancy required and this is a great way to practice quilting. Please join us for an hour or for the day – we have chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and lots of fun and laughter. Do bring a lunch or a snack. If you cannot attend CS but would like to help, please contact me. No need to bring supplies – if you need it we have it! Remember: if you know anyone who needs a quilt we distribute throughout the year, CS quilts are not only made for the December distribution. Community Services continues to make good use of your donations of scrap batting, thread, plastic zipper bags, and fabric. All of these items go into making or storing quilts. Quilt Show help needed! Volunteers are needed at the Community Services Booth at the Quilt Show on Saturday, noon to 2:00 and 4:00 to 5:30. If you cannot do the full two hours, an hour will help us out. We have a new location this year . . . right inside the doors of the Northern Pines Building, next to Silent Auction and across from Baskets. I think this may be the most fun area of the whole show! Everything is provided – sewing machines, thread, needles, fabric, and design board. All you need to do is glide in between your other shift responsibilities and sew, maybe answer a question or two here and there. Margie will share her technique to make this quick TABLE TOPPER. It can be used as a place mat or in the center of your table. And made very quickly! Now that all your Quilt Show projects are finished its time to relax and take this fun class with friends. Our last two work shops have been full! So please sign up at the GUILD meeting. You'll receive a supply list at that time. UNTIL THEN.......... KEEP ON QUILTING Any questions contact: Bey at cbmaddox50@ a net June Program Eleanor: [email protected] Merrilyn Scott Merrilyn Sco started quilting in 1970 when she took scraps from clothes she had made for her daughter and herself and magically turned those scraps into her first quilt! After making many quilts, she actually began to study ‘how to quilt’. She has no idea how many quilts she’s made because it never occurred to her to count them! Following a ten year break, Merrilyn returned to quilting in 1994 and discovered rotary tools. She thinks her urge to cut fabric was influenced by the fact that she was scissor deprived as a child. Since she now cuts through fabric at every opportunity, she has an extensive UFO list which she is slowly working through. (Editor’s Note: Is that different from any other quilter?) Eager to share her enthusiasm about quilting, she began teaching in 1996 and which eventually lead to quilt design and paern development. Presentation June 3rd, 2014 Essential Embellishments Workshop June 4th, 2014 Sunshine and Flowers Her workshop is a great way to spend a day as you and your quilting buddies learn a technique that plays with basic origami flowers and stars, plus embroidery, embellishments and applique.
