2014-2015 Annual Report - Norfolk Botanical Garden
Annual Report 2014/15 From the President I’m proud to present to you, our members, donors and friends, the Garden’s Annual Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. As I finish my first year as President & CEO, I reflect back on an amazing 12 months of challenge, change and transformation. Last summer saw the opening of our “Mission: Monarch” exhibit, furthering our work in conservation and education on the plight of our pollinators. Capping it off was our fall fundraising event, “Flutter Fantasy”, a butterfly-themed evening of food, drinks and dancing on the terrace, that folks are still talking about. Last holiday season we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Dominion Garden of Lights with a new logo, and the largest display ever in our history. USA Today 10BEST nominated us to their Top 20 list, and online voting nationwide took us to the 8th spot in the country! It was by far our most successful holiday season ever, and we look to repeat that this year. As a welcome to 2015, and with a renewed sense of dedication to our community, we opened the gates to the Garden free of charge for the first two weeks of the year, culminating in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. On Doctor King’s Day we welcomed over 1,300 visitors free of charge, a fitting tribute to our community and his legacy. To better serve our members and guests, we began 2015 with a major restructuring of our Admissions, Membership and Tour Operations departments into one team reporting to a Director of Member & Guest Experience. Our Weddings and Special Events divisions, whose revenues support so much of the good work we do here, now have their own respective Directors focused on these revenue streams to deliver the best results for the Garden and for the thousands who annually attend our events and rentals. These departments, along with Donor Relations, fall under the leadership of a new Vice President of Operations & Development, Cathy Fitzgerald. Norfolk Botanical Garden We realigned our marketing function to report directly to my office, thereby ensuring our communications reflect a holistic approach to all of our operations at the Garden. Also notable is the adoption by the Board of Directors of a new Strategic Plan for 2015-2018. I’m proud to share it’s six major goals with you: • Establish the Garden as a leader in environmental stewardship • Deepen the Garden’s engagement with—and impact in—the community • Provide a dynamic, high-quality and welcoming experience. • Strengthen communications and marketing to build excitement about the Garden • Ensure long-term financial sustainability • Strengthen organizational leadership and capacity In closing, we have accomplished much and have much more to do! In spring of 2016, we will bring LanternAsia, a first of its kind Chinese lantern exhibition to the Garden. This event will transform the Garden’s landscape with massive works of art that have never been seen before on the entire East Coast. We’re proud to bring it here, for you, our NBG family. USA Today 10BEST nominated us to their Top 20 list, and online voting nationwide took us to the 8th spot in the country! On behalf of our amazing volunteer Board of Directors, thank you for a great year! Michael P. Desplaines President & CEO Annual Report 2014/15 1 Horticulture Brian O’Neil, Director of Horticulture Environmental stewardship, public outreach, and technology are of increasing focus for the Horticulture staff at the Garden. We strive for a fuller awareness of the benefits for the environment in almost every aspect of our daily chores from new garden design or garden renovation, integrated pest management, and even the selections we make for future plant sales. We have risen to the challenge to be more visible in the community and to help make the Garden better known near and far, and to involve more members of the community in Garden activities. There have been several changes to the Garden landscape over the past year. The “Farmers” metal sculpture trio has been relocated from the former Cutting Garden to a more visible spot on the Airport Berm. Local sculptor Anton Bakker’s cubic lattice work was sited in Baker Overlook, where it blends nicely with the surrounding plants. The monarch butterfly sculptures created by Colonial Welding were installed, appropriately enough, in the Butterfly Garden. The Skipwith Garden was created across from the Colonial Garden to represent the type of flowers that would have grown in colonial Tidewater during the 18th century. Changes have begun in the Frederic Heutte Flowering Arboretum with the wide mowed paths winding through natural areas of native grasses and wildflowers, creating a more attractive spot for native pollinators, birds, educational opportunities, and new activity spaces. Heading into the future, look for more renovations in this area to celebrate Heutte, the Gardens first director. In spring of 2015, in conjunction with our “Incredible Edibles” education program, staff created the new “Kitchen Potager Garden” where the former Cutting Garden was located. Some big changes have occurred in one of the Garden’s more iconic spots, NATO Vista. All of the Callery pears and adjacent ‘Crimson King’ Norway maples have been removed. The maples were nearing the end of their life span, and both trees are on the state of Virginia’s invasive species list. Stay tuned for further developments. Our staff have an interest in and commitment to creating and maintaining beautiful gardens, but with a somewhat new approach. When selecting new plants for the garden, value to native pollinators and other wildlife are a key consideration. To maximize our long-term efforts and to reduce a high dependency 2 Norfolk Botanical Garden on seasonal annual plants in certain garden areas, we are redesigning some gardens with more permanent perennial and woody plants. In addition, we have set new parameters to reduce usage of the herbicide glyphosate. Based on new studies of its effects on honeybees and other insects, we will no longer use neonicotinoid insecticides in our pest management arsenal. We are ever attuned to the value of recycling natural by-products to use as mulch, and you can see the results in the arboretum and Garden pathways. In May, the efforts of yearlong planning resulted in the most successful Plant Sale to date with 6,000 visitors in attendance. The Garden recently partnered with the Chrysler Museum and their summer 2015 exhibit “The Artist’s Garden” by providing two Tillandsia bromeliad trees created by our herbaceous team. Horticulture staff also designed and participated in planting large stoneware planters at the Slover Library as a community outreach. Our staff has also taken on the periodic maintenance of the landscape at the city welcome sign outside the airport entrance. We were also on the tour agenda for the state meeting of the Virginia Native Plant Society, a real honor. Plant Societies have always been integral Garden supporters through the years holding shows and sales which attract visitors to the Garden. Other plant societies such as the Virginia Camellia Society, Tidewater Bonsai Club, Virginia Native Plant Society, and most recently the Tidewater Orchid Society have been very generous with donations of plants, time, and funding. The Tidewater Daylily Society has gifted the Garden with beautiful and rare plants for years and are featured most prominently in our Baker Perennial Garden. We have partnered with TDS by adding a daylily test bed to the back of the Border Garden. Breeders from the mid-Atlantic have been submitting daylilies to judge for the 2017 national daylily convention, which will be held in Norfolk. The Garden’s relationship with Old Dominion University remains strong with the continuation of the J. Robert Stiffler Distingished Chair of Botany serving as the Garden’s Director of Science. Our Curator of Natural Areas has been a featured speaker for ODU’s Conservation Biology Class and is an active committee member for the Lytton J. Musselman Natural History Lecture series. The Garden is also collaborating with ODU for native orchid conservation with the North American Orchid Conservation Center, a program with the Smithsonian and the US Botanic Garden. As you can see, and no doubt have experienced, the Garden is a dynamic, ever-changing place. As gardeners often are, our dedicated Horticulture staff is always looking forward to the future, always striving to improve and to make the Garden a more beautiful and environmentally friendly place. Annual Report 2014/15 3 C H I L D R E N ’ S & F A M I LY P R O G R A M S Unplug in the World of Wonders Children’s Garden Jen Erving, Director of Youth Education When the WOW Children’s Garden opened nine years ago in 2006, smart phones didn’t exist and texting was a relatively new form of communication. In the last decade, technology has become more mobile and has drastically changed the way children and families interact with the world around them. Environmental Educators are often torn in choosing whether or not to incorporate these technologies into the outdoor experience to better engage “digital” kids. A visit to the Children’s Garden can be entirely wireless, but the use of technology can help you dig deeper into the experience. You can use a camera to ask kids to take pictures of their favorite plants to share with friends or use your smartphone to answer a nature question. However, a phone or computer can’t take the place of a child touching and smelling an herb or the excitement of a butterfly landing on her shoulder. NBG Horticulturists and WOW staff are available, so encourage your children to ask them questions about the Garden in lieu of a web search. To get back into nature (technology-free) during your next WOW visit, some ideas you might try include: • Find a place in our Plant Safari habitat gardens and ask children to sit quietly and still to see what nature starts to come alive around them. • Visit each Passport Garden and talk about how people and animals live differently in each part of the world. • Climb Discovery peak to see how edible plants and crops from around the world grow and plan your next dinner. • Ask children to pretend they’re insects and look closely at plants from their perspective. • Visit the soil table in the Dirt Factory and plant a seed or pot a small seedling. In 2015, our educational focus in WOW was Incredible Edibles and highlighted our vast collection of edible herbs, fruits and vegetables. Children pretended to be chefs in our upgraded Farm Market and submitted ballots to vote for their favorite edibles (Strawberries were the clear winner.) We offered a series of themed scavenger hunts and tours. WOW is a location to learn about edible gardening and the impact that plants make in our daily lives and in the natural world around us. 4 Norfolk Botanical Garden LIFELONG LEARNING Adult Education Courtney Cornwell, Director of Adult Education Education doesn’t have to end when you leave school, it is a lifelong learning experience. Norfolk Botanical Garden offers a variety of classes from gardening, flower arranging to wellness classes. Last year, we offered nearly 600 classes ranging from simple walk and talks to more in-depth lecture series. With the launch of Incredible Edibles this spring, there are even more vegetables to learn about and see along the way. Stop by to see our Kitchen Potager Garden and chat with one of our amazing volunteers who are leading this program to learn how to start your own vegetable garden. This spring we offered free informational walks every Wednesday and Saturday lead by our kitchen garden intern, assisted by volunteers. This is the first Garden that is largely maintained by volunteers, helping us to keep this garden thriving and educating guests. If you are a novice painter or self-proclaimed artist, check out one of our many painting classes. If yoga or Tai Chi are more your speed, we offer those classes as well. If you are looking into designing your own landscape, we offer a Landscape Design series. Take a look at our newly re-designed GROW to find a class that is right for you. Our biggest classroom is our 175-acre campus. We are working hard to educate our visitors with enhanced on-site interpretation to make the guest experience even richer. Be sure to look for our new Native Plant Guides located in our Native Plant Garden. A Pollination Guide is coming soon to Annual Report 2014/15 our Butterfly Garden. Expect to see more of these interpretive guides throughout the Garden in the coming year. Last year, our Butterfly House was the focus theme of the Garden with Mission Monarch: Project Milkweed – Sponsored by Capital Group Companies and the Gary Fund at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Norfolk Botanical Garden also partnered with Old Dominion University to bring awareness and action to our declining Monarch butterfly populations. The Butterfly Festival held in July, and the Monarch Tag and Release in September were both very successful and brought in nearly 1,700 visitors who learned about this unique pollinator. To help restore milkweed plants to the region, the Garden sold approximately 1,000 plants during the year—enough to feed more than 10,000 caterpillars in one season. Next summer, learn more about the butterflies in the Butterfly House by chatting with one of our many volunteers. We cannot forget about our other pollinators, like the honey bee. More than 2,300 guests attended our 2014 Honey Bee Festival, held in August. The Beekeepers Guild of Southeast Virginia partnered with Norfolk Botanical Garden for an educational and fun-filled day. The Beekeepers Guild returned after the Festival to hold a three-week course. Pollinators are essential to life as we know it; they are responsible for pollinating the plants that produce our food. The Garden is able to bring this message to center stage with these programs that attract audiences of all ages. 5 Facilities Don Brown, Director of Facilities The Facilities team have gone through major changes over the past year. Prior to November 2014, Facilities did not exist as a separate department. It is now the combination of Facilities, Maintenance, and Security Departments. The need for this reorganization is threefold: 1) Failing infrastructure required immediate and dedicated attention; 2) Routines of housekeeping and general maintenance require structure and measure; and 3) Revenue generation by events and rentals requires operational strategies and long-term sustainability. Cleaning, preservation, maintenance, and repair are now being addressed from a holistic management strategy. Facilities staff will continue to develop as demand and expectations change. The Facilities Department is currently responsible for maintaining 64,550 square feet of building space, 48,600 of which requires cleaning. This includes 21 restrooms and 35 offices. These are spread out in 20 buildings—each with their own heating, ventilation, air conditioning and power distribution systems. Two buildings have audio systems; nine buildings are intranet-connected and now provide WiFi to a large portion of the Garden. Vehicles include seven trucks, one van, three boats, two trams, 39 golf carts, and eight pieces of heavy equipment. Additionally, the majority of hardscape repair is managed by the Facilities Department. Support required for events in the Garden varies each season, averaging 100 per year. Services for these events may include: power, lighting, seating and tables, security, and housekeeping. The Facilities Department is responsible for compliance with Virginia Health Department, Department of Agriculture, Department of Environmental Quality, Employment Commission, Occupational Safety and Health, and local fire ordinance requirements. Accomplishments this year include realignment of staff to provide 125.5 hours of facility coverage per week, renegotiation of service contracts resulting in increased service and a reduction of over $13,000 in operational cost. After process review, elimination of vehicles that were redundant have further reduced costs. Control technology is now utilized to reduce lighting and heating requirements and the elimination of unneeded vehicles have further reduced costs. As we move into the future, continued investment in our Information Technology is a must, as well as restoring and modernizing aging infrastructure at the Garden. 6 Norfolk Botanical Garden Weddings & Events Rodyan Quinonez, Wedding & Corporate Events Director Norfolk Botanical Garden is quite simply one of Coastal Virginia’s most extraordinary places... and what an extraordinary summer it has been for the Wedding and Events Department! The new wedding department has implemented a new sales and marketing strategy for the 2016 season and implementing concierge services. This new change has seen an increase in sales by 10% for the 2016 booking season and we’re not even in engagement season! One of the many highlights of the year was having the spectacular beauty of NBG captured on the cover and in an eightpage spread in the Fall/Winter 2015 VOW Bride Magazine! This feature was fully designed and produced by the Wedding Department. In June, the Garden hosted the International Events Society Annual Diamond GALA, a glittering Gatsby styled affair which highlighted the beauty of Renaissance Court and provided a spotlight on our beautiful garden to event industry movers and shakers. Recently the department hosted an elite team of top wedding industry professionals producing a shoot that will be featured in a global wedding blog and be part of our strategic marketing campaign. This new marketing campaign will highlight NBG as the premier wedding and event location in Virginia. Our blooming gardens, forests, lakes, fountains and skyline create the perfect backdrop for luxury weddings. “We are the premier wedding location in Coastal Virginia. Our success is critical to the bottom line of our notfor-profit public garden.” —Rodyan Qunionez Our revamped vendor list includes the best of Virginia— top names such as Chef By Design, Sweetwater Cuisine, Vow Bride magazine, House of Maya, Distinctive Events Rentals and many more. Annual Report 2014/15 7 VOLUNTEER PROFILE Madonna’s Journey Kelly Welsh, Director of Communications Madonna Elliott, a retired government employee, is a Norfolk Botanical Garden walking billboard. She is a spokesperson, an NBG classroom student, a weekly Garden volunteer and is a seven-year member along with her husband. Though Madonna has always loved the Garden, she didn’t realize how the Garden would change her life and in turn, helped change us too. “I feel like it’s my place when I am walking,” Madonna said. “I’ve met a lot of people and have a new love for plants and horticulture. The Garden is a safe and peaceful place to walk; I see something different every time I’m there.” About eight years ago, Madonna’s life changed forever. One morning, she began having problems breathing. She was admitted to the emergency room and spent three days in the hospital where she was diagnosed with (COPD) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. She was told she would need to use an oxygen tank at night, possibly for the rest of her life. Madonna was strong and so was her will to live a healthier life. She began walking, small steps and paces at first. She became a member of the Garden and now walks about six miles a day three to four times a week. She put one foot in front of the other until she reached six miles, just a year after being hospitalized. The Garden has become her constant companion, a place she can call home. 2015 VOLUNTEER SNAPSHOT 118 groups volunteered 1,037 individuals volunteered 8 She volunteers weekly at the Garden helping with administrative needs that include organizing hours of approximately 1,000 volunteers, compiling reports and more. “Madonna is invested in the volunteer program and wants to see the program excel; she has a genuine love for the Garden and the staff that work here,” said NBG Volunteer Coordinator Amanda Wells. She is a true Garden advocate and ambassador and is someone that I and the Garden can count on.” If you are out and about in the Garden and see Madonna walking, feel free to stop and ask her about her Garden story. You never know, she just may inspire you. We could not do what we do without our dedicated volunteers! Volunteers have staffed the Butterfly House, festivals, and signature events like the Million Bulb Walk and the Dominion Garden of Lights. They are also essential in helping the Garden with administrative tasks, gardening, membership mailings and much more. Norfolk Botanical Garden Donor Relations Cathy Fitzgerald, Vice President of Operations & Development Visitors and Members Created in 1938 as part of a WPA (Works Progress Administration) grant, Norfolk Botanical Garden is an oasis in the midst of the ever more bustling city of Norfolk, VA. The Garden’s 175 acres is spectacular year-round and offers over 250,000 annual visitors a variety of opportunities to enjoy and learn about nature, wildlife and the environment. The Garden saw a 5% increase in members who joined or renewed in 2014, making the 8,631 member households strong partners in the Garden’s mission to enrich life by promoting the enjoyment of plants and the environment through beautiful gardens and education programs. Educating children about the natural world is important and that is why our donors pledged $40,000 as a matching gift opportunity to help us continue to grow our children’s programs. Thanks to 149 donors, we raised $80,000 to help fund ongoing activities for children in World of Wonders. Moses Ezekiel Statue Restoration Campaign Norfolk Botanical Garden’s Statuary Vista is a unique outdoor sculpture gallery featuring eleven larger-than-life statues created by Sir Moses Ezekiel. These sculptures, carved from Cararra marble, depict classical and renaissance artists. THE ARTIST: Born in Richmond in 1844, Moses Ezekiel, a Virginia native, was the first Jewish cadet to graduate from Virginia Military Institute. He fought in the Battle of New Market during the Civil War. By the time of his death, he was recognized as an internationally renowned sculptor. A capital campaign to raise $550,000 to restore, preserve and renovate the statues and garden area is close to completion. Renovation of Statuary Vista has started and will be completed next spring. You can support this project with a donation or by purchasing a brick, blue stone paver or tribute bench. Please contact the Donor Relations Department if you are interested. 10 Tribute Benches: Celebrate, Commemorate, Remember The beauty, wonder and serenity of Norfolk Botanical Garden combine to create a perfect setting in which to honor a loved one or pay tribute to a special friend. You can choose from a number of beautiful locations in the Garden to place your teak bench for a $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000 donation. Please see Tribute Bench donors on page 16. Planned Gifts: Helping to Preserve Our Beautiful Environment for Future Generations. The Evergreen Society was formed in 1999 to recognize and celebrate an outstanding group of friends who generously support the Garden beyond their lifetimes. Dr. Nichols, a retired Clinical Psychologist, was a Master Gardener and shared his love of nature with his wife Gayle for the past 43 years. For many years they enjoyed helping Garden staff with gardening projects and events. Their enthusiasm for the Garden and its many special places was most evident in the time they volunteered in the Butterfly House where they shared their enjoyment and knowledge of butterflies with hundreds of guests each season. Their philanthropy stretched across the entire area and impacted many. Gayle will continue to volunteer at the Garden and with other organizations, continuing a commitment she shared with her husband to give back to the community they loved together. “Edward and I determined a while back that we wanted the Garden to be part of our legacy so we included this organization in our will,” Gayle said. “The chance to help ensure this lovely, ever-changing and always peaceful place would endure long after we are gone was important to us.” The Garden was a place of peace for Edward during his life and especially during his illness. Gayle has purchased a Tribute Bench and has selected a location in the Butterfly Garden. It is the perfect location for Edward’s Tribute Bench, a place for Gayle to reminisce about their amazing life together. “I love knowing that I can add a bench to the Garden in his memory so others can stop and enjoy the garden he so enjoyed himself,” she said. For information about our Bench or Planned Gift Programs, call our Donor Relations Department at 757-441-5830 ext 319. 16 NBG Board of Directors OFFICERS Chairman VADM David Architzel, USN, Retired Vice Chairman Catherine M.
