Food for Thought….. Papal Tweets Pope Francis @Pontifex ♦ Lord, grant us the awesome gift of meeting you. ♦ Christians are witnesses not to a theory, but to a Person: Christ risen and alive, the one Saviour of all. ♦ We can observe the Fourth Commandment by loving visits to our aging grandparents. ♦ Let us invoke the Holy Spirit each day: He guides us along the path of discipleship in Christ. Reminder: Please note that Friday morning Mass starts at 7:30 a.m. beginning this Friday, June 12. Our Lady Star of the Sea Page 2 Grosse Pointe, Michigan From the Parish Family Half and Half Congratulaons to Bishop Walter Hurley as he celebrates his 50th anniversary as a priest! Bishop Walter A. Hurley was born on May 30, 1937 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1955. He graduated from Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, in 1961 (B.A.) and St. John’s Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan, in 1965 (M.Div.). Following his ordinaon to the priesthood June 5, 1965 by Archbishop (later Cardinal) John F. Dearden, he was assigned as associate pastor of St. Dorothy Parish, Warren. He later pastored St. Cyprian’s in Riverview, Sacred Heart in Roseville and St. Lucy Parish in St. Clair Shores. At the invitaon of Archbishop (later Cardinal) Edmund Szoka, he began graduate studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. earning a license in canon law (J.C.L) in 1984. Upon returning to Detroit, he served as judicial vicar of the Metropolitan Tribunal from 1984 to 1989. In addion, he served as moderator of the curia for the archdiocese. In 1990, he was designated a prelate of honor with the tle of monsignor by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. In 1994, he became a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher. In 1990, Bishop Hurley was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Farmington, where he served unl November 2003. He also served as delegate of the cardinal for clergy misconduct issues. He was the cardinal’s delegate and project manager for the construcon of the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. Bishop Hurley was ordained the 22nd auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit on August 12, 2003. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Grand Rapids on June 21, 2005 and was installed as the eleventh bishop of the Diocese on August 4 at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. He accomplished much in Grand Rapids, including the the development and construcon of Cathedral Square, the 11.5-acre campus in Grand Rapids which brings together all diocesan services, along with Catholic Charies West Michigan, into one facility. During Bishop Hurley’s nearly eight yearlong appointment as bishop of Grand Rapids, the diocese also saw increasing success in its priestly vocaons program. As required by canon law, Bishop Hurley submiDed his leDer of resignaon to Pope Benedict on the occasion of his 75th birthday in May 2012. On April 18, 2013, Pope Francis appointed David Walkowiak, a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio, to succeed Bishop Hurley. We are very blessed to have Bishop Hurley as our “weekend assistant” here at Star of the Sea. We wish him many more years of priestly ministry as he celebrates this great milestone!! ** The school year is coming to a close this week here at Star. That usually means things slow down a bit around here, which is a good thing. It has been a very busy year, especially the past couple of weeks. It has been two years since I went out west to Boise to visit one of my brothers. With a newly ordained priest hanging around here waing for his assignment to begin, I figure this is a perfect me to get away a bit and let him fill in while I am gone!! (It will be “good pracce” for him.) ** Thanks for your parcipaon in the Catholic Services Appeal. Without the funding of these ministries and programs, the ministry of Christ would be lessened. With everyone’s help, we will be able to meet our target of $204,000 very soon. Blessings on your week, Msgr. Gary Smetanka From the Deacon’s Desk Today’s second reading on this Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Hebrews 9:11-15) reminds us that Jesus is our High Priest, our Mediator, Whose death freed us from the death of sin and Whose intercession before the Father unites us in the life of the Holy Trinity. In Bapsm, we are anointed with the oil of chrism to share the mission of Jesus as Priest, Prophet and King. The word “prophet” essenally means to “proclaim”, and we’re called to proclaim the Gospel in the way in which we live. One aspect of sharing the Kingship of Jesus is that we have royal dignity as children of God and should recognize the royal dignity of each person. “Priest” inially was not a Chrisan or Hebrew word; it was a pagan word. A priest is someone who offers sacrifice. When ministerial priests such as Msgr. Gary offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we are not mere spectators. By virtue of our Bapsm, we all are united with Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice on the Cross and rejoice in His Resurrecon. We also exercise our priesthood outside the Mass. Sacrifice in this sense does not mean giving up something. Rather, we offer sacrifice by giving of ourselves in service to our families, neighbors, co-workers, anyone in need. Consider the love shared by a husband and wife, a parent feeding a child or changing a messy diaper, or someone taking me to serve at a soup kitchen, or a person going out of the way to give someone having a tough day a pat on the back. The opportunies to exercise priesthood are endless. We give thanks to Jesus our High Priest and ask that we always be united with Him in giving ourselves to others, just as He has given Himself to us, especially in the Mass and His Body and Blood. Have a blessed week. In Christ’s Peace, Deacon Bill The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 3 June 7, 2015 From the Parish Family Go and Make Disciples RJK - Mouse or Lion “Stress” (as considered in this arcle) is the converging of the forces of a surrounding environment upon an individual. Distress is the negave reacon of that individual to such forces. Stress, properly handled, can develop strength. Faced with a stressful situaon, both body and mind are put on sudden alert. Adrenalin begins to flow and the judgement must be made to “fight or flight”; whether to handle the maDer by standing ones ground or to flee from the problem presented. How well or how poorly one decides depends upon the training and experience of the individual. Basic to a person’s decision is an appraisal of the nature of the perceived danger. Can it be handled or is it unmanageable? Faced with a wild animal, one should demote the situaon if a mouse is involved but head for cover if it is a lion. There is no sense in pole-vaulng over a mouse but any effecve means of avoiding the lion should be taken. Experience also has much to do with the choice. Being cast into a lion’s cage would be the worst of all worlds for most of us, but for a lion trainer, the maDer is roune (but it was not always so for him). Whether in the physical or spiritual order, we are well advised to prepare ourselves in our judgement. We should disnguish a mouse issue from a lion one. If every stress is perceived to be a lion, the result can be breakdown. Preparatory training can preclude physical harm and prayerful reliance on God will dispel despair. In the last analysis, the ulmate in stress is the possibility that heaven may be lost. May in our prayers for God’s help and mercy may we find our way. See you in church. RJK st (first published May 31 , 1981) Barnabas is menoned several mes in the Acts of the Apostles. Most of the references are in connecon with St. Paul whom he accompanied on a number of missions to spread the Good News. Although St. Paul leP his leDers and is more widely known, the story of Barnabas is quite interesng. On June 11, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Barnabas, a great evangelizer in the early years of the Church. He is honored by the Church like one of the twelve apostles, as is St. Paul, even though neither was one of them. Barnabas was born on the Island of Cyprus and was a Jew. He spoke Greek. He later lived in Jerusalem and owned property in that area. Soon aPer Christ’s death, Barnabas became a Chrisan and was a member of the original Jerusalem community of believers. It is recorded that Barnabas shared his resources with the community when he “sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the apostles”. (Acts 4:37) Barnabas was good with people, especially in dealing with difficult situaons. He was instrumental in Paul becoming accepted by the disciples in Jerusalem. When Paul went there aPer his conversion, the disciples didn’t want anything to do with him. They didn’t trust him because of his history of persecung Chrisans. It was Barnabas who “took charge of him and brought him to the apostles, and he reported to them how on the way he had seen the Lord and that he had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus”. (Acts 9:27) Actually, Barnabas was a name the apostles gave him. His given name was Joseph. The name Barnabas means “son of encouragement”. It was customary to give names indicang something in which the individual excelled. Barnabas demonstrated many skills and qualies consistent with the “encouragement” moniker. This, combined with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, made him a wonderful evangelizer. Evangelizers really do need to be good encouragers. This happens when we share with others in a humble manner. We can share with others: • God’s influence in our life • Our feelings about their situaon • Experiences we or others have had • Our me and resources • Potenal sources of help We share in a humble manner when we: • Involve the Holy Spirit • Listen carefully • See their side or point of view • Avoid being preachy • Build their confidence “Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) One in the Spirit, Jean Wersching Evangelizaon Commission Our Lady Star of the Sea Page 4 Grosse Pointe, Michigan Spirituality and Worship Liturgy Schedule for June 13th and 14th, 2015 TIME: Saturday 4:00 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m. Sunday 9:30 a.m. Sunday 11:30 a.m. Fr. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Page 7 June 7, 2015 In Our Parish Camino de Santiago On Monday morning, Fr. Tim Birney (Director of Priestly Vocaons), another priest, two seminarians, 20 guys discerning the priesthood and myself will be heading to Spain for two weeks. We are going to make the ancient pilgrimage along the Camino de Sanago (the Way of St. James). For centuries, Chrisans from around the world have been taking this famous route to venerate the relics of St. James the Greater. Tradion claims that St. James preached the Gospel in Spain before he was martyred in Jerusalem. His remains were then returned to Spain to their current locaon in Sanago de Compostela. While there are various “caminos” that lead the magnificent cathedral of St. James, the most popular route, which begins in France, is 500 miles long. We will only be walking 165 miles of this route and we will be starng in the Spanish city of Astorga. To put the journey in perspecve, 165 miles is roughly equivalent to the walking distance between Detroit and West Branch which is a two and a half hour car ride. As we baDle the Spanish sun and try to avoid blisters, our daily walking distance will vary between 11 to 19 miles. The main purpose of the trip is to go on a spiritual pilgrimage. For the guys who are discerning the priesthood, the pilgrimage is an opportunity to spend me away from daily distracons and focus exclusively on their relaonship with the Lord. In spending me with Him, they will hopefully be able to know their vocaon more clearly. If it is God’s will, maybe some of these men may be given the desire to enter seminary and study for the priesthood. Please pray for these young men that they may be open and docile to the Holy Spirit. Also, please pray that we all have a safe journey with as few blisters as possible! I will try and send in updates to be added to the bullen along the way. This me next week, if all goes according to plan, I will have already walked 48 miles. Here is an ancient prayer for pilgrims on the Camino. Thank You Thank you to Msgr. Gary, Brian Foos, Debby Veltri and the enre Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish community for the wonderful and amazing recepon following Fr. Brian Meldrum’s Mass of Thanksgiving on May 31st. From the Prayer from St. Francis of Assisi, “For it is in giving that we receive”, Fri Brian has given much of his me and talents and ministry to Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish. In doing so, Fr. Brian has received back 100 fold in prayers, support and love from parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea. Than you for making Fr. Brian’s Mass a joyous celebraon to our Lord. May God connue to bless Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish. ~ Bill & Jessica Meldrum O God, You who took up your servant Abraham from the city of Ur of the Chaldeans, watching over him in all his wanderings. You who were the guide of the Hebrew people in the desert, we ask that You deign to take care of these your servants who, for love of your name, make a pilgrimage to Compostela. Be a companion for them along the path, a guide at crossroads, strength in their weariness, defense before dangers, shelter on the way, shade against the heat, light in the darkness, a comforter in their discouragements, and firmness in their intenons, in order that, through your guidance, they might arrive unscathed at the end of their journey and, enriched with graces and virtues, they might return safely to their homes, which now lament their absence, filled with salutary and lasng joy.
