FOCUS
The matchmakers
Hattie Larlham supporters use annual
donation to ignite Giving Tuesday’s
philanthropic mission in others
Twenty-five years ago Ron Barber walked through
the doors of the Hattie Larlham Center for Children
with Disabilities for the first time. Recalling his visit,
Ron immediately remembers his admiration for the
compassion Hattie Larlham staff showed the residents.
He and his wife Grace were inspired by Hattie Larlham’s
mission. Taken with the organization, Hattie Larlham’s
place in their hearts quickly grew.
Grace and Ron have been great supporters of Hattie
Larlham for many years. Their gifts provided countless
one-on-one art sessions, medical care, recreational
activities and job training for people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities in Northeast Ohio.
Grace and Ron’s passion for Hattie Larlham developed
into a partnership which strengthened an online giving
community.
Giving Tuesday is a national movement that reminds
us to support local charities. This day of giving follows the
widely recognized shopping events, Black Friday and Cyber
Monday.
For the third year, the Barbers matched dollar-for-dollar
each online donation made to Hattie Larlham on Giving
Tuesday, up to $15,000. As long-time Hattie Larlham
supporters, Grace and Ron believe Giving Tuesday is a
great opportunity for everyone in the community to come
together, raise awareness for Hattie Larlham and give what
they can.
“Grace and Ron’s support on Giving Tuesday has
motivated so many people to come forward and make a
donation. Some of these people have supported Hattie
Larlham in the past and some of them are new donors,”
said Annual Fund Director Rosanne Drake. “Grace and
Ron’s matching gift helps our supporters, both old and
new, realize their donation does make a difference.”

December 2015
Dear friends,
Hattie Larlham had a great year. We extended innovative programs to the
community. We thought outside the box and found better ways to serve people
with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Your support had a tremendous
impact on our ability to create and deliver these community programs.
Hattie’s Creative Arts started with six artists at the Hattie Larlham Center for
Children with Disabilities. Today, the program extends to Constant Companions
and the Summit Artspace. We now help 264 artists with disabilities paint, take
pictures, make ceramics and create music.
In 2011, the first Hattie’s Gardens opened in Akron. The work training program
for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities grows produce for the
surrounding neighborhoods. Our employees are contributing to a healthier Akron.
Hattie’s Food Hub is a new endeavor for us. It will build on what we started at
Hattie’s Gardens. Starting this spring, our staff will wash, prepare, package and
sell fresh vegetables from Hattie’s Gardens and local farmers. Hattie’s Food
Hub will also have a community component. People can visit the food hub for
educational programs and cooking demonstrations, as well as fresh, healthy food.
Your continued support helps Hattie Larlham bring innovative ideas to the
community. Please consider making a donation this holiday season to further
our mission of comfort, joy and achievement to people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Thank you.

a clean production room to begin
their work: assembling gastronomy
tubes (G-tubes) which are shipped to
people all over the world.
The 92,000-square-foot facility in
Brecksville, Ohio, is home to Applied
Medical Technology (AMT). For 30
years, the company has produced
enteral feeding devices, which are
used by people unable to eat orally.
“I absolutely love my job here,”
beamed Linda, a Hattie Larlham
employee. “It’s quiet, clean and
everybody is so friendly. I hope to get
hired here full time.”
Linda worked for Hattie Larlham
for five years. She started at the
Hattie Larlham program at Little Tikes
in Hudson, Ohio, assembling the
2-in-1 Snug ‘N Secure Swing. Wanting
change, Linda decided to check out
a new Hattie Larlham work training
program which would start in July
2015. The opportunity was extended
to seven other people seeking jobs at
the time.
“I’m so grateful that I was offered
the opportunity to work here,” said
Susan who works alongside Linda.
“The people are very nice and my
boss has been so helpful. I really
enjoy what I do.”

is one of the eight employees in
the work training program. Since
working at AMT, Susan has exceeded
productivity expectations and is
performing in the job very well.
AMT is a six-month work training
program for employees with
intellectual and developmental
disabilities. They work under the
supervision of Hattie Larlham
Vocational Manager Kim Wiech. After
six months, employees are assessed
for job readiness and could apply
for a position to work within AMT or
seek employment elsewhere in the
community.
“This is more than just a work
training program that develops job
skills,” said Wiech. “The big goal is to
build self-esteem in a person. Making
them feel confident is a big part of
moving forward.”

Hattie’s Food Hub
partnerships flourish
The vision of an Akron food hub is quickly coming together. Since Hattie
Larlham broke ground in July 2015, construction workers have poured
the foundation, built the wood frame, laid the bricks and placed the solar
paneling. It’s the start of what is yet to come.
Soon the Akron community will have access to fresh, locally grown
produce right in their backyard. This is currently unavailable to the
neighborhood. The community is considered a food desert, which is a
geographic area where affordable and nutritious food is difficult to obtain,
particularly for those without access to an automobile.
Hattie’s Food Hub will not only make food available for purchase, but
also teach local residents how to use what they’ve purchased with cooking
demos and educational events. The education rooms can accommodate up
to 50 people and host community gatherings and food safety and processing
certifications for Hattie’s Food Hub staff and other agencies.
The facility has a green roof to grow permaculture-like sedum. This helps
insulate the building while retaining water from entering the sewers. The
right side of the building is hugged by soil which also insulates the building.
The trees which used to grow on the vacant land were used to build the
framework of the building.
A bike box encourages neighbors to ride their bikes to Hattie’s Food Hub
to buy groceries and further reduce the impact on the environment.
The food hub will provide eight to twelve job opportunities to people
with and without disabilities. The employees have the tools to wash and
package for local companies. Hattie’s Food Hub has already partnered with
organizations Peaceful Fruits, Twenty 4 Zen Granola, Akron Public Schools,
Akron Zoo, Akron Grows, Ohio State University Extension and Summit
County Health.

Peaceful Fruits is a Peninsulabased business that partnered with
Hattie Larlham to produce organic fruit snacks. The snacks have no added
sugar or artificial ingredients. The main ingredient is the açaí berry, a fruit
from the Amazon Rainforest rich in antioxidants. The idea is to create a
snack people can enjoy with peace of mind.
Peaceful Fruits was started by owner Evan Delahanty after working with
the U.S. Peace Corps in Suriname, a small country neighboring Brazil where
açaí grows wild. When he needed a production partner, Hattie Larlham
came highly recommended.
“It was easy to make the right decision,” said Delahanty. “This was a way
to make my product local and create work opportunities for people with
developmental disabilities.”
Hattie Larlham produces Peaceful Fruits’ snacks by blending the açaí

and other fruits and then drying
the resulting puree slowly in
a dehydrator until it becomes
“fruit leather.” This is cut into
strips and individually packaged
in biodegradable pouches for
convenient and guilt-free snacking.
The snacks then go to Blick
Clinic, another local partner that
offers support for people with
developmental disabilities in
northeast Ohio, where they are
labeled and boxed.
Peaceful Fruits is available for
purchase online, as well as with
local partners such as Hattie’s Café

Eats, Nature’s Bin, Cleveland Clinic
Wellness store and soon at the new
Whole Foods in Rocky River.

Planned gifts
Giving through a bequest is one of the easiest ways
to support Hattie Larlham’s mission while securing
your family’s financial future. Whether you are 35 or
85, planning for the future starts this year. Secure your
family’s financial future with these four steps:
1. Review your will. Do not wait for a life-changing
event, such as an illness or death, to plan.
2. Update your list of assets and documents. You
will have a comprehensive overview of your current
situation to help you make thoughtful decisions.
3. Consider your beneficiaries’ circumstances. Has a
change in your family created a need for you to change
your will?
4. Visit your attorney. Consult with an attorney who
specializes in estate planning.
Taking time to review your estate plans allows you
to consider how you would like to distribute your assets
6
based on changing circumstances and priorities. As you
reflect, you may want to consider one of the following
designations:
Unrestricted bequest: This designation allows Hattie
Larlham to allocate your gift wherever the need is
greatest. Unrestricted gifts help Hattie Larlham meet
Center for Children with Disabilities resident needs,
group and supported living homes and provide work
training and job placement services for people with
intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Restricted bequest: A bequest may be designated to
support a particular Hattie Larlham program or project
that reflects a personal interest.
If you included Hattie Larlham in your estate plans,
please let us know. If you wish to discuss in confidence
a plan that best meets your family and charitable needs,
please contact Catherine Schwartz, Hattie Larlham chief
development officer, at (330) 274-2272, ext. 3457, or by
e-mail at [email protected].

Hattie’s Assembly on PBS
Public Broadcasting cameras film Hattie’s Assembly
for ‘In America with James Earl Jones’ segment
In October, a PBS camera
crew filmed Hattie’s Assembly
employees assembling the
Bearacade™ door control
system. PBS interviewed
representatives from Hattie’s
Assembly and Bearacade™ for a
segment to air on, “In America
with James Earl Jones.”
The segment highlighted
the Bearacade™ which protects
people in lockdown situations.
In recent years, there have
been dozens of shootings
across the nation. To save
lives, Bearacade™ Cofounder
Bill Cushwa wanted to make a
strong product that could be
used quickly in a crisis situation.
He also wanted to keep the
production local. He connected
with Hattie’s Assembly to
manage the assembly, packaging and shipping of the
product. Since May 2014, Hattie’s Assembly has put
together, labeled, packaged and shipped Bearacade™ door
control systems to 18 states.
“Hattie’s Assembly is very much an extension of our
business,” said Cushwa. “The employees show a genuine
care and passion for the product with great attention to
detail. They also take pride in their work and can tell me
about the product and its importance.”
Hattie’s Assembly is a work training program for adults
with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The
employees perform production tasks for local businesses
which require many people to complete.
“PBS is a great opportunity to raise awareness of our
partnership with Bearacade™,” said Hattie Larlham
Director of Vocational Services Laura Walker.
Stay tuned to Hattie Larlham’s website and Facebook
page for future air date.

“We are thrilled to be a part
of the vibrant arts community in
Akron and to have the work of our
artists featured in this dynamic new

AMT, from page 3
in a variety of industries, which
include gardening, food preparation,
dog care services, vending and light
manufacturing. The organization also
partners with local companies to
employ people in the community.
“This has been an amazing
partnership,” stated Laura Walker,
Hattie Larlham director of vocational
services. “This is how work training
for people with developmental
disabilities should happen – in the
community.”
“We are really happy we partnered
with Hattie Larlham,” commented
AMT Human Resources Manager
Marci Rockich. “Everything has
been well organized and the
communication has been fantastic.”
Though the work training program
started in July 2015, AMT Founder
George Picha, M.D., P.h.D., F.A.C.S., is
a longtime Hattie Larlham supporter.
In the mid-1980s, Dr. Picha coinvented the first Button® low-profile
feeding device. It was created to
reduce stoma leaks. Since then, AMT
has continued to introduce innovative
designs and materials to increase
patient comfort while improving
patient outcomes.
Aware of the company’s products,
Hattie Larlham Medical Director
Richard Grossberg, M.D., F.A.A.P.,
approached AMT in early 2000
with an issue he was having with a
competitor’s product.
After touring the Hattie Larlham
Center for Children with Disabilities in
Mantua, Ohio, Dr. Picha understood
the residents’ needs.
“I was impressed with the facility
and the great work this organization
does,” said Dr. Picha. “I wanted to
support it in any way possible.”
“We are here to help people,”
said Dr. Picha. “That mission is
transmitted throughout our whole
organization. Our products help
hundreds and thousands of people
around the world who can’t eat.”
In 2011, Dr. Picha and the Loya
Foundation donated $100,000
over a four-year period to Life
Choices, a Hattie Larlham vocational
rehabilitation program. This program
assists people with disabilities to
obtain community employment.
The partnership has come full
circle. Adults with disabilities now
work at AMT to make a product
for the Hattie Larlham Center for
Children with Disabilities residents.
After completing the training
program, employees can seek
support though Life Choices, partially
funded by AMT, to assist them in
finding competitive employment in
the community.

Volunteer opportunities
Hattie Larlham thanks all of the volunteers who gave of themselves
this year. Your invaluable and often intangible gifts of time, talent and
compassion provided lasting memories and life experiences for the people
with intellectual and developmental disabilities Hattie Larlham serves.
If you, your group, organization or company would like to volunteer at
Hattie Larlham, contact Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator Cassandra

On Sat., Nov. 14, Hattie Larlham hosted the 15th
annual Rudolph H. Garfield Circle of Caring at the
Signature of Solon. Sponsored by The Alpha Group, the
event raised $230,000 for Hattie Larlham programs.
Kathleen Sanniti, director of women and children’s
ambulatory and community acute care services at
UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and UH
MacDonald Women’s Hospital, was the 2015 honoree.
To honor the Sanniti family’s farming heritage and
interest in Hattie’s Gardens, 2015 Circle of Caring had
a garden theme. The event included red-carpet photos,
entertainment, a cocktail reception, dinner, a wine pull
and live, silent and fund-the-mission auctions. The
fund-the-mission auction benefited Hattie’s Food Hub.
Sanniti has been on the Hattie Larlham board of
directors since 2000. She served as president of the
Hattie Larlham Community Living and Center for
Children with Disabilities boards.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with Kathy when
she was president of our community living board,”
said Dotty Grexa, Hattie Larlham vice president of
vocational and enterprise services. “Kathy is forward
thinking, devoted to Hattie Larlham’s mission and most
importantly, she puts the best interests of the people we
serve first and foremost.”
The Circle of Caring incorporated contributions from
Hattie Larlham programs. Hattie’s Café & Gifts made
the desserts, Hattie’s Assembly made the centerpieces,
Constant Companions made the bid paddles and
Achieve made the decorative table covers.
