EcoLocal has received
funding for the Carshalton
Community Allotment
The funding boost from Postcode Local Trust
will enable EcoLocal to help local families
to learn about wildlife friendly gardening.
Both adults and children will learn how to
create homes for wildlife on allotments and in
gardens and grow food in an organic way.
Tansy Honey said: “We are delighted to
receive this funding, which will help us run
a series of free sessions at our Carshalton
Community Allotment where people can
learn how to create wildlife friendly gardening
habitats”.
Teatime’s fun for all the family at
Dotty’s Teahouse
Carshalton mum Rebecca Mackenzie is bringing a touch of
retro chic and creative inspiration to her town this summer,
with the opening of Dotty’s Teahouse at 108 High Street.
Promising ‘tea, cake and creativity’, Dotty’s Teahouse is a
new hub at the heart of the community for artistic pursuits,
as well as serving up a good old-fashioned cuppa and a
slice of something sweet.
Rebecca’s idea for a family-friendly, fun and quirky tea room
is largely thanks to her twin daughters, Isabella and Ava, who love copying Mummy in the play
kitchen at Dotty’s. The layout of the tea shop has been carefully planned to be accessible for
double buggies, and there’s a special kids menu too – Rebecca’s thought of every detail.
To find out more about Dotty’s Teahouse or enquire about workshops and events, visit
www.dottysteahouse.co.uk or call 0203 754 4613.
£100 000 raised by Friends of
Grange Park, Old Coulsdon for
a new, playground to be built
this summer
Friends of Grange Park, Old Coulsdon (the
Friends), have secured funding from a number
of organisations, which, added to their own
considerable fundraising means, that a brand
new and inclusive playground will be built in
Grange Park, Old Coulsdon this summer.
The Friends have been awarded grants from
Biffa Award, London Marathon Charitable Trust
and the Macquarie Group Foundation securing
the future of play for all children in the local
community.
This is a true grass roots campaign where the
whole community has united behind the Friends
in their ambition to renovate the 25-year-old
severely dilapidated playground.
The children of the community are the architects
behind the new design, where the brain storm
of ideas was generated by 150 school aged
children in a ‘design your dream playground’
competition, which led to an innovative theme
based on the local heritage and landscape,
including Kenley Airfield and the River Bourne.
Inclusivity is also a hallmark of the design,
which will achieve PIPA status- the
government endorsed accreditation of an
inclusive playground promising fun outdoor
play opportunities for all the children of the
community, together, If all goes to plan the park
for be ready for its first play session in the last
few weeks of August so pray the weather plays
nicely too avoid any building delays.

The new addition to the Legoland Star Wars Miniland display has jaws dropping
in awe. Giving the impression that it is floating in mid-air, the new 500,000-piece
Death Star is a brilliant finale to the Star Wars exhibition. The fact that guests
can interact with the display by triggering sound and light effects only adds to
the excitement. The scene featuring the Death Star is a recreation of Luke
Skywalker’s infamous flight into the heart of the super weapon’s reactor core,
from Episode IV: A New Hope (or, in old money, the first Star Wars film!). You don’t have to
be a Star Wars fan to appreciate the workmanship required to recreate the Death Star; it’s 2.4 metres wide
and 3 metres high, and it took 15 people over 3 months to build. My kids still can’t believe that being a Lego model maker really is an actual job.
The rest of the display features scenes from all the other films and there are 3-foot-tall models of the series most famous characters. If all that isn’t
enough, you can take a picture of yourself and the kids battling super-villain Darth Vader and, even better still, you get to enjoy Legoland too!

Families caring is sharing charity challenge
With the summer holidays upon us why not take this unique opportunity to sit with your children and find out what is dear to them, and
raise money for a charity of their choice. This journey in itself will show you insights into the beautiful minds of our children, but also
allow us to help them identify and set into action a means in which to raise funds for their charity of choice.
Children grow so fast in body and mind. Why not encourage them to do a big clear out, and donate their belongings, or if you have a
more business minded child you could set up a store at a boot sale with the proceeds going to charity. My son is a self-proclaimed artist
and sets up portrait stands, donations only, and keeps half and gives half away. The ideas are endless, and the people who will benefit
the most will be you and your little ones.
There are of course countless charities and not for profit organisations that are always looking for happy helpers. We have found a few
that welcome help from the whole family.
Carshalton Community
Allotment, a place of urban
tranquilly where friends
and family are invited to
get together to support the
community and grow food – you
even get to take some home
Carshalton Community Allotment is a tranquil
oasis, tucked away behind houses and a
football club. The allotment evolved out of the
‘Beanstalk Project’ which aimed to help families
learn how to grow food. Since then this community food growing
space has grown in size, as well as the diversity of planting and people
involved.
Twice a week EcoLocal welcomes volunteers to come and take part in
gardening on the allotment. All ages are invited and children are well
catered for with child sized tools and gloves, and a relaxed, welcoming
atmosphere. It is an opportunity to spend time as a family in the fresh
air, improve your gardening skills and contribute to the community.
There is a lot that needs doing; help weed the herb area, renovate the
‘square foot gardens’, plant out a new strawberry bed and everybody
who takes part gets to take free fresh veggies home.
Carshalton Community Allotment is at Westmead Allotments, Colston
Avenue, Carshalton, Surrey SM5 2PW. Find out more at www.
localfoodnetwork.org.uk or call 020 8404 1522.
Award-winning Carshalton Lavender Annual
Harvest Fair Open Weekend on 30th and 31st July
- A community event to keep the heritage of the
local lavender alive for future generations

bees and butterflies and every year children have the opportunity
to take part in the Big Butterfly Count (www.bigbutterflycount.org),
identifying as many beautiful butterflies as they can. Younger visitors
can also do a mini beast hunt, focussing on helping collect as many
Rosemary Beetles as possible.
Visitors can pick their own lavender, enjoy hot food, get their face
painted, visit stalls selling lavender related products and have

All funds from the sale of lavender bunches that are picked and bought
over the weekend go straight back into the Carshalton Lavender project
helping to keep this unique heritage of lavender alive for years to come.

Since 1978 Gold has been the
theme representing the world’s
youngest cancer patients and honouring their courageous struggle
against childhood cancer.
Kingston-based Momentum, which supports children with cancer across
SW London and Surrey, has come up with some fun ideas for children
to start fundraising over the Summer holidays ahead of September’s
campaign.
•
Have a gold-themed cake sale! Bake some cupcakes and decorate
them with gold sprinkles!
•
Host a gold-themed playdate. Dress up in gold clothes and have
some sparkly fun!
•
Collect Gold Coins! See how many shiny £1 and £2 coins you can
collect.
Momentum supports families with trips and treats, respite breaks at its
holiday homes, therapy services and counselling, as well as working
with local hospitals to improve the healing environment.
In September Momentum will hold awareness activities and a special
Golden Bus Outing for the children and families it supports. The charity
also hopes to raise £10,000 to go towards family support services and
hospital improvements for the month of September.
Visit www.moment-um.org for fundraising materials including gold
balloons, bunting and wristbands. Young fundraisers will receive a
Momentum certificate.

Summer Holiday Volunteering Sessions
Every Saturday between 10am and 2pm we have volunteering drop-in
sessions where we welcome volunteers to help us in maintaining the
field. This is wonderful opportunity for families and children to learn
about the heritage of the area, and to get involved with the community
whilst learning about the nature and sharing in laughter together.

Plastic Free July - The
challenge is quite
simple...attempt to
refuse single-use plastic
during July
Did you know that by 2050 it is
estimated that there will be more
plastic than fish in the world’s
oceans.
This Summer join in the Plastic Free July
revolution to raise awareness, and teach
our children about the problems of singleuse disposable plastic in our lives .
As a family, by participating in this event you will teach your children
about how our consumer habits have far reaching impact. Benefits
of doing Plastic Free July include eating healthier food, creating less
rubbish and potential pollution, and to raise a fundamental awareness of
the beautiful world we live in and the impact we are having on it.
When going on beautiful walks on summer days, encourage your
children to pick up plastic along the way. Not only will this teach them
a sense of pride about the community in which they live, but also save
animals and create a beautiful world for generations to come.
Accept the challenge here www.plasticfreejuly.org/register.html
Summer Lights for Summer
Nights – Npower is inspiring
people, young and old, to
light up their summer for
MacMillan cancer support
In today’s world there are very few people
who have not been affected by the
dreaded disease, cancer.
The Summer Lights for Summer Nights is
a wonderful way for families and children
to celebrate their loved ones who ‘light
up their lives’ by holding a Summer
Lights get together indoors or out,
using decorative lights - fairy-lights,
candles or lanterns as a key focal point.
The idea is for people to invite family and friends over for nibbles and
drinks, or dinner – however they like to celebrate, in exchange for a
donation to Macmillan Cancer Support.
For more information on how to get involved in the Summer
Lights campaign, visit the website www.summerlights.org.uk
So, what do children gain from learning to give?
At a time when we are all tightening our belts, and worrying about
how to take care of ourselves, how do we install a commitment to
charitable giving in the next generation of young people?
This is the question put forward to Donna Edmonds, Head of English
at Croydon High, who has been a passionate supporter of charity for
a number of years, having raised a significant amount of money and
an even greater degree of awareness amongst the young people
in their own school and beyond. ‘’At Croydon High School we firmly
believe that when we help others, we help ourselves. ‘’
Our passion for charity and social enterprise has been firmly
established this year through our work with Free the Children.
Free the Children embraces 3.2 million young people around the
globe, who have initiated a kindness revolution to reach out and
embrace those in need in their local, national and international
community. In the UK alone, primary and secondary children initiated
and delivered 2500 projects in 2015 that ranged from bake sales
and money collections, to marches, sleep-outs, and in the case of
Croydon High School, travelling to Calais to support children affected
by the refugee crisis.
But why? What can we gain from giving?
Reflecting on the experience of the pupils at Croydon High School,
we have observed many of the Free the Children pillars of charity
this year. The campaign started with a simple ‘’We Bake for Change’’
concept by collecting the proceeds from weekly cake sales. This
progressed into the ‘’We Create Change’’ campaign, where weekly
loose change collections were held. The success of this campaign
then grew into the ‘’We are Rafiki’’campaign (Rafiki means “friend”
in Swahili), where pupils sold artisan bracelets made by Kenyan
women.
The story climaxes with a trip to The Jungle refugee camp in
Calais, where the thoughts and actions of a single pupil, Ambreen
Khan in Year 12 had the impetus the group needed to launch the
“Padalicious” campaign, a clothing and feminine hygiene collection
of sanitary products, designed to restore dignity to women with
limited access to such supplies.
The girls at Croydon High School have transformed this year through
participation in an initiative concerned with “giving”, but what did they
gain?
The answer: entrepreneurial skills; time management; creativity;
marketing; public speaking; team work and liaison with a broad
network of agencies; raising money and re-investing their profits.
But what else do you gain? The answer: an awareness of the needs
of others; compassion and sensitivity and love for your fellow man; a
potent sense of pride and achievement; an overwhelming sense of
identity as a citizen of the world.
Is this important? I believe so.

Do you want to give your little ones the tools needed to grow
into emotionally, socially, intellectually and physically happy
young adults
Success in life is more than being top of the class or achieving good academic scores….it is about
having a “winners” attitude that is focused on the process rather than the result. Whether your child is
academically inclined and getting great results or is struggling to pass, attitude is the key to success.
‘’My mission is to educate, motivate and inspire children to succeed in life and not just in school! This is
about having a positive mind-set that equips & empowers them to achieve intellectually, emotionally &
socially so that they don’t become another statistic.
All of my Coaching Programmes have been carefully put together based on my extensive research
which are based on solid Scientific & Psychological Principles :Positive Psychology, Neuro Linguistic
Programming, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Social Psychology, Life Coaching, and Emotional
Intelligence,’’ Zelna, from World Class Kids Life Coach.
The Study Success for the New School Year Coaching Programme aims to motivate and inspire children to
want to read for pleasure and learn for fun so that they can become engaged thinkers and lifelong learners.
Based on three simple principles, learning should be a natural and pleasant activity, learning problems are
caused by the inability to cope with anxiety & stress and that learning blocks are because of subconscious
programming in response to failure,
A child participating in the programme will multiple benefits that they will carry through the rest of their lives such as: implementing daily study
routines & habits , time management and prioritising , managing stress and reducing anxiety , positive attitude to learning ,listening Skills
,focused concentration , improved confidence and feeling self-esteem ,study techniques and most importantly overall happiness.

If your child loves to sing, dance and act
- then this is a week they won’t want to
miss. Children are taught singing, acting
and dancing by our friendly, enthusiastic,
experienced and DBS-checked teachers.
They will learn new skills, make friends and
build confidence during our high energy
and fun classes. You don’t need to be a
Stagecoach student or have any experience
to come along to our workshops – just
enthusiasm! The superb teachers will
work with students to develop skills in the
performing arts, boost confidence and put
on a full scale, costumed production at the
end of the workshop for friends and family
to enjoy.

Snowy Strawberries
This one is super easy and great to get the kids helping in
the kitchen. Ideal for summer snacks, they can be kept in
the freezer and brought out after a hot day at school.
How to make:
1. Wash the strawberries and trim the stalks and leaves off
each one.
2. Put some of the Greek yoghurt in a bowl and roll each
strawberry in the yoghurt. Lay them on a flat baking tray.
3. When you have covered all the fruit with the yoghurt,
place the tray in the freezer on an empty shelf and leave
to freeze overnight. You can then take them off the tray
and store them in freezer bags until needed.
Usually filled with tofu, herbs and noodles, they are a great
snack and if you can find the rice paper wrappers in a local
oriental food supplier, you can not only make those but also
these amazing fruity rolls, perfect for lunch boxes.
You will need
Rice paper wrappers
Mixture of summer fruit;
watermelon, strawberries,
apple, pear, peach, mango,
kiwi fruit etc.
Mint leaves (optional)
Lime juice
How to make:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Take the fruit you are going to use, wash and peel if
necessary, then cut into very small, cubes.
Drizzle with lime juice over the fruit to prevent browning and
stir well to combine the fruits together.
Add a few small or torn mint leaves if your child likes them.
Place a small pile of the fruit at the centre of a rice paper
wrapper. Roll one side in, then the two ends and finally roll it
up.
Lay it on the open side to stop it falling open.
If you like you can tie it with a chive or a small piece of string
but this should be taken off before your child eats it.
