Lecture: D.H. Lawrence: Painter
Thursday 2nd September
‘A picture lives with the life you put into it’ – D.H. Lawrence
Lawrence loved painting from an
early age, but nearly all his earlier
paintings were copies. It was not
until the last four years of his life
that he began to produce original
paintings which have a strong
bearing on his writings of the
period, especially Lady Chatterley’s
Lover, ‘Etruscan Places’ and ‘The
Escaped Cock’. He published these
paintings in a splendid edition,
and exhibited them at the Warren
Gallery in London in 1929. Thirteen
were confiscated by the police.
Keith Sagar is a Special Professor
at Nottingham University, and the
author of many books on Lawrence,
including D. H. Lawrence: Painter,
Chaucer Press, 2003.

He has published two ecofeminist essays on
Lawrence in Études Lawrenciennes and is

Today the top two floors of the property are now a holiday cottage, with the ground

visitors around this historic property.

Lecture: D. H. Lawrence and Kai Gøtzsche
Thursday 16th September
Dr Andrew Harrison, the newly appointed Director of the D.H. Lawrence Research
Centre at the University of Nottingham will explore the importance of D. H.
Lawrence’s close association and friendship with two Danish painters – Knud
Merrild and Kai Guldbransen Gøtzsche – from October 1922 to at least January
1924. In the winter of 1922-3 ‘the Danes’ lived in a cabin next to Lawrence’s Del
Monte Ranch, in New Mexico, sharing work chores and daily life with him and his
wife Frieda. Lawrence was subsequently very supportive of the artists and their
work. Between them, Merrild and Gøtzsche produced the cover designs for two of
Lawrence’s books.
However, while Knud Merrild went on to become an artist of some note, writing a
memoir of their time together with Lawrence, entitled A Poet and Two Painters
(1938), Gøtzsche, who spent more time with Lawrence, and produced one of the
most striking and iconic portraits of him, has faded into obscurity. This lecture will
piece together what little is known of Gøtzsche and his interactions with Lawrence,
drawing on some recently-uncovered material unfamiliar to many Lawrence scholars.
