2014 ANNUAL REPORT formerly Colorado Bright Beginnings A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND THE CHAIR CONTENTS 3 A Message from the President and the Chair 4 Why by Three 6 Who & How We Serve 8 Our Community 10 Our Top Partners 12 Financial Report 12 Our Supporters Dear Friends, For nearly two decades, Bright Beginnings has served families and caregivers of Colorado children under age of three - critical years during which a child’s brain develops trillions of connections that lay the foundation for learning and skill-building. Our evidence-based visit program and materials help parents create a healthy and engaging home environment. Seventy-five percent of these visits are with lowincome families, as we know that poverty adds additional challenges in caring for and nurturing a child’s future success. In 2014, Bright Beginnings became Bright by Three. And while we remain committed to our historic mission, we are driving significant improvements in early caregiving. We adapted our program strategies to keep pace with how young parents and caregivers prefer to interact – online and on their mobile devices. The interruptive, immediate nature of a text message holds great promise in reaching families, particularly those that are hardest to reach. Text messaging also presents an opportunity to dramatically increase the level and frequency of our interactions with families from one to two touchpoints annually to over one hundred by sending two to three weekly messages. We also launched two exciting technology-based initiatives: an intensive language development program called Colorado Talks Back that utilizes the Language Environment Analysis (LENA) device to encourage back-and-forth talking between caregiver and child; and Bright By Text, which sends learning games, parenting tips, and local resources that are timed to a child’s age and developmental stage. It’s free and simple to sign up: text “BRIGHT” to 444999 (or “BRILLANTE” for Spanish). As we look toward 2015 and beyond, we are excited about the opportunities. At the center of our efforts is evaluation to gain a clearer understanding of our program’s impact on the attitudes and behavior of caregivers, as well as children’s readiness for school and learning. We have incorporated validated survey instruments into our evaluation strategy and completed a customized outcome-tracking database. The data that Bright by Three is collecting holds great value for all of our partners working in early childhood development, and we are committed to sharing what we learn. We are also working with policymakers, and thought leaders to develop scalable and sustainable solutions that will ensure every young child in Colorado has a healthy start. Every day we are inspired and motivated by the parents, caregivers, and children we serve. Our commitment to give every Colorado child a bright beginning is the foundation for all our activities, and 2014 was a formative year in the development of the systems and technology that will enable us to achieve this ambitious goal. Your partnership upholds Bright by Three’s mission and ensures our commitment to providing Colorado families with critical parental supports – a bright beginning for every child. Warmest regards, OUR VISION Every child in Colorado will be healthy, valued, and ready to learn. Jean B. McSpadden President and Chief Executive Officer Elizabeth Kincannon, M.D. Chair, Board of Directors 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 3 WHY BY THREE Only 48% of low-income children in Colorado are ready for school at age five. Empowerment of parents 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 4 Engagement with children of skills Readiness for lifelong learning 85% of core brain structure is formed by the time a child turns three years old. talk By age three, a low-income child will have heard 30 million fewer words. This gap has lasting effects, not just in grade school, but throughout life. Development read sing play praise Children’s healthy development and readiness for school depends on responsive relationships with the adults in their lives. 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 5 WHO & HOW WE SERVE Bright by Three serves more than 60,000 children and families each year across Colorado. I use the advice a lot, especially those focused on motor skills. It had you jump with your child and teach them how to jump up and down or jump off things. And to make it a little more fun, you jump like a frog or a kangaroo or a bunny rabbit.” Board of Directors Board Chair Elizabeth Kincannon, MD CMO Parker Adventist Health Vice-Chair Bernie Buescher Former Deputy Attorney General State of Colorado Treasurer Beverly Maxwell President Advantage Learning Center Ruth Seedorf PARTNER Baby Bear Hugs Yuma, CO “Bright by Three materials are key to our program and families love them.
