Hello NYSAA. We, the board have made some
exciting decisions to bring back the champion
of champions bid calling competition. We also have the NAA BA.S certification course at
the convention, Laurie has done a great job in
lining up regular speakers as well. The Greek
Peak Hotel & Resort is an optimal place to
bring the whole family.
We the board are going to be looking for board
members – a vice president, secretary, & treasurer. Contact any of the board members or myself if you are interested in becoming a part of
the board.
We have also made available to you with having a bragging rights page in the magazine.

Tongue-Twisting Sales Chants

At first, it sounds
like a rumbling
jumble of crazytalk, a blur of voices from the back
of the room. But
once Station to
Station’s Eli Detweiler, Jr. and
Denise Shearin
begin to make their way across the floor of Chicago’s
Union Station, microphones in hand, the crowd quickly realizes they’re watching an auction — one that has
more to do with music than commerce.
The two award-winning auctioneers were a hit at the
event’s performances, where their high-speed numbercalling — and Shearin’s vocal crescendos — were
paired with slowly rising and almost menacing instrumental music, and then combined with a snapping,
percussive turn by whip-cracker Chris Camp. Together, the three create a sound that’s at once spectral and
barbaric, and impossible to compare to anything else.
“That’s Doug Aitken’s goal,” Detweiler, 40, said of
the Station to Station founder. “To take the unusual
and unexpected, and turn it into an art form that you
can see, hear, and experience.” Adds Shearin: “He
brings out the musicality in it all.”
Shearin, having attended numerous real-estate auctions, decided to enroll at the Texas Auction Academy
in Dallas, Texas. “I woke up one day and literally said,
‘I think I can do this,’” she said.
Both have competed (and won) at the National Auction Association championships, where each has their
own pre-show rituals. Detweiler practices some tongue
twisters and what he calls “humming drones.” (“It’s
like lifting weights,” he told WIRED. “It gets all the
muscles synchronized.”) Shearin, meanwhile, gets
ready by singing and performing number drills: 5, 10,
15, 20, 2 and ½…
Detweiler first worked with Aitken in the late ‘90s,
when the artist filmed him for a video installation,
These Restless Minds, which featured a series of auctioneers. He and Shearin were later recruited to perform as part of an “auctioneer opera” Aitken staged in
Switzerland in 2009. That makes Station to Station,
“kind of a homecoming,” Shearin said. “Because
we’ve done it before, we can kind of feed off each other,” she added. “And the crowds are always excited.
We’re fortunate that we’re always welcomed.”
The auction industry’s changed in recent years, thanks
in part to sites like eBay. “When I first started [in
1992], we had people who didn’t have any clue how it
worked,” said Detweiler. “Now, most of the general
public understands the profession. The flip-side of that
is online auctions have become a competitor — but
nothing can duplicate the transparency and the speed
of what we do.”
Detweiler hails from Ruffin, North Carolina, where he
works weekly livestock and auto auctions; Shearin, 42,
is from Brandywine, Maryland, where she works as a
real-estate agent. The two met in 2006, shortly after

What represents a better performance: a three hour marathon
Compared to what: Marketing and relativity
when you come in first in the small-town meet, or a three hour
marathon when you come in last at the elite one?
What tastes better, a $30 bottle of wine that's the cheapest the
restaurant offers...or the very same bottle at the restaurant next
door, where it's the most expensive?
When asked about our experience, the essential question is always, compared to what?
What offers a better education: four years at your first choice
selective college like Purdue or Williams? or four years at the
same place, but it's your last resort safe school, after you've been
rejected by more famous (and thus selective) schools like Yale
and Harvard?
We often need a frame before we're comfortable evaluating value. Marketers regularly exploit this glitch by creating the illusion
of value (or non-value) by highlighting comparisons, when in
fact, those comparisons really don't have to matter.
Without a doubt, there are competitive items and experiences
where extrinsic status matters, and where understanding the context of what is created is part of the point. Winning may in fact
be the goal. For most of what we experience, though, it's our own
interpretation of the experience itself that matters, not what a
marketer tells us about how this ranks against that.
Good enough, is.

Absolute Auction & Realty and Haroff Auction & Realty (NYSAuctions.com) conducted an auction for the
City of Poughkeepsie, August 28th of surplus properties
including two parking garages. One garage was 2 votes
shy of being given to a local church for their parking
use. It hit the auction block and sold for $155,000, to
the same church. The City had a $25,00 offer on the
other parking garage but decided to go to auction. The
same person who placed the
offer paid $1,450,000. + Buyer’s premium!
