BML AROUND THE WEB
In December, the Public Library Association (PLA)
wrote about the Bellmore Memorial Library on their
Facebook page. PLA kindly acknowledged our
achievement of being selected as a pilot library for the
StoryCorps program. They also changed their header
photo to feature OUR library. Thank you PLA!
RETURNING MUSEUM PASSES
Please be thoughtful of other residents and cancel your
museum pass reservation as soon as you know you are
not going to need it. This frees it up for someone
else. You can cancel a reservation online, or by calling
the Help Desk at the Library.

STAR WARS EVENT
On Sunday, January 25 we had an exciting Star Wars
event! Special
visitors like
Darth Vader,
Chewbacca, Storm
Troopers, Princess
Leia, and many
more came to the
library to spend
time with us. Kids
participated in
mask making, an
R2D2 craft,
and Star Wars
bowling. They also received tattoos, goodie bags, and
won raffle prizes. We would like to thank the 501st
Legion for bringing some of our special guests.
OVERDRIVE ADVANTAGE
Bellmore Memorial Library now offers Overdrive
Advantage. Advantage allows the library to purchase
more copies of popular titles that circulate only to BML
cardholders. If you need assistance using this e-resource,
please call the Reference Desk.
ONLINE CATALOG NOW IN SPANISH!
To access the online catalog in Spanish click on the
"Catalog" link in the menu at the top of the Library's
homepage, then choose "encore". At the center bottom
of the encore page choose Spanish. Voilà! or, ¡Vale!
SOCIAL MEDIA
Just a few years ago we all thought tweeting was
something birds did, pinning was the job of tailors, and
friending, well, that was a grammatical error. My, how
things have changed! Social media is now one of the
biggest forces driving how people communicate with
each other – and not just because of the new lingo.
Social media platforms like Twitter, Pinterest, and
Facebook are actually providing new avenues for the
flow of information. And now, you can use these social
media sites to stay in touch with the Library.
No matter how you access the Internet -- computer,
laptop, tablet, or phone – you can access library
information, updates, and fun stuff. In “going social”,
we have chosen formats based on whether they work
for the type of information you want. Some are
better for news and alerts, others are more
entertainment-based, so we’ve catered our content for
each to make sure that connecting with us through
social media is both easy and enjoyable.
So how do you choose between following the Library
on Twitter and Tumblr? Well, you don’t have to – you
can use as many different social media platforms as you
like! But each has its own unique vibe, so depending on
what you want to know, one site may be more
appropriate than others. Most require you to set up a
free account to use all the available features and have
Library posts and information sent your way, but you
can also just visit and check us out.
AS SEEN IN THE
Two well-known businessmen, friends and lifetime residents
of Bellmore reminisce about their lives in the community.
In the Bellmore of Bill Setteducati's youth, the streets were unpaved. They were the playground for
him and his pals during the roaring ‘20s, where the children chased each other from stoop to stoop.
They were where his mother picked dandelions to add to an evening's soup dinner. His neighbors on
Linden Street would sometimes walk horses and other livestock down the road. And when Bedford
Avenue was finally paved, residents would gather and freely roller skate up and down the block,
unafraid of the small number of cars that would pass through the neighborhood.
Bill "Sette," 95, and Roy Weinman, 90, hold
their memories of Bellmore through the
decades dearly. The pair recently shared
some of their favorite stories - with topics
ranging from Prohibition to the opening of
Mepham High School to how they started
their respective local businesses - by
participating in the Bellmore Memorial
Library's StoryCorps program. The recording
will be available for all to hear and added to
the growing local history collection.

all our social media outlets, Pinterest’s photo format and
user-friendly organization makes it an ideal way to learn about
your next great read. What we do is pick a style of book or
area of interest and then post photos of books that fit the bill.

The Hirten Irish Dancers have performed at Carnegie
Hall, Radio City, Gracie Mansion, and at many major
festivals throughout the country and in Ireland. Nancy
Hirten, director of the Hirten Irish Dancers has been
entertaining audiences in the tri-state area for the past
30 years. Nancy has delighted audiences with her
champion step dancing and choreographies.
A Touch of Sinatra is a musical show about the life and
music of Frank Sinatra, narrated by Joe Gilligan and
performed by Donnie Farraro. You will be entertained
by the story of Sinatra’s life, the songs that made him
one of the most renowned singers of the 20th century,
along with funny anecdotes and jokes.

A TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY CASH
Sunday, May 17 at 2:00pm
Playing the part of Johnny Cash is Long Island's own
Tom Cavanagh. He will take you on a magical journey
by performing material from every period of Cash’s
legendary career as a guitarist and songwriter. Tickets
for Bellmore patrons plus one guest will be available
starting April 20. Non-residents may begin to pick up
tickets starting May 2.

The bus will leave promptly at 8:00am from the Curé of
Ars parking lot (enter on Hewlett Avenue). We will
begin with a Downton Abbey-themed walking tour of
the country home of Ogden Mills and his wife Ruth
Livingston Mills in Staatsburgh, NY.
We will then head to the Brotherhood Winery, which is
America's oldest winery operating in the United States.
We will have a buffet-style lunch followed by a walking
tour of the winery. After the tour, there will be a
complimentary wine tasting.
The cost of this trip is $75.00, by check only. No
refunds unless the trip is cancelled.
Registration for Bellmore patrons plus one guest will
begin March 5. Registration for non-residents will begin
March 19.
Completion of any of these programs entitles you to a 10% reduction on your automobile liability and collision
insurance for 3 years and a reduction of up to 4 points on your license. Bring your license and a pen to class. You
may bring your lunch to the full-day classes as there will be a 1/2 hour break. PAYABLE BY CHECK ONLY.

unique food-safe glass plate then rim the edge with

TEEN ADVISORY GROUP (TAG)

Help brighten a dog’s day by making homemade
dog treats from scratch using cookie cutters to
make pet-friendly shapes! Mrs. Kathy will bake
these treats at home, and donate them to a local
animal shelter or animal rescue group.

are welcome to join our
Teen Advisory Group
(TAG). We meet once a
month to talk about
program ideas, teen
services in the library,
and anything else that
comes up. TAG members can attend as often as they
are able, and volunteer service credit is given for
each meeting attended. In addition, special service
credit may be given to TAG members for
participation in programs, such as Blood Drives or
other library volunteer opportunities.
You can join TAG by filling out a registration form
(available at the Reference Desk) and leaving it for
the YA Librarian.

needed for the most important element of
the college application process. In this free
workshop for 11th graders and parents, you
will learn the secrets to becoming a highly
desirable candidate, discover the purpose of
the essay and what admission officers are
looking for, and recognize what not to do so
you don’t waste valuable time!
