Merriam-Webster Tutorial Merriam-Webster by Merriam-Webster, Inc., Version 2.0, Free This is the Merriam-Webster American monolingual English dictionary version for the iPad. This is how the main screen looks like, and a description of its components: From left to right, top of the screen Left arrow (icon): It allows the user to go back to the previous screen. Right arrow (icon): It allows the user to go to the next screen. Recent (option): It shows the most recent searches. Daily (option): It features the word of the day, which changes daily. Favorites (option): It displays searches that have been marked as favorite. Search bar (icon in the shape of a magnifier): It allows the user to input text searches. Microphone (button): It allows the user to do voice searches. Right hand side, bottom of the screen i (information icon): It contains other options that will be described later. How to search Searches can be done using one of these two simple methods: 1) By directly inputting the term that we want to find in the search bar. If a list of suggested terms appears, we simply tap with our finger the term that we want (in this case we tap on “inclusion”). Contributed by Graduate Students from Simmons College 1 Merriam-Webster Tutorial The search result may contain information such as the term’s pronunciation (available by clicking on the red audio icon), phonetic transcription, grammatical category, definition(s), grammatical variations, examples of use, origin, first use, synonyms, and antonyms. The level of detailed information varies according to the term. 2) By clicking on the Microphone button, and saying the term that we want to search directly into the iPad screen when prompted Recording… The screen will then change to Analyzing… to show that it is looking for a match. If the application is able to recognize the voice prompt, and it finds an exact match, it will display it the same way as the example shown in page 1. If the application finds several matches, it will show them like in the third screen below. If the application cannot not recognize the voice prompt, an error message will appear: Contributed by Graduate Students from Simmons College 2 Merriam-Webster Tutorial How to mark a search result as a favorite To bookmark a term for a future reference, once you have searched it, tap on the star icon (it will change the color from white to yellow). The term can then be easily found from the main page by selecting the Favorites option. To edit the list of favorites, from Favorites, tap on Edit Favorites, select the radio button next to the term(s), and then tap on Delete, Delete all (deletes the entire list of favorites), or Cancel (cancels the operation). How to view recent searches To view the list of terms that were recently searched, from the main screen, select the option Recent. To edit the list, tap on Edit Recent Searches, select the term or terms to edit, and then tap on Delete, Delete all, or Cancel. Recommended Apps: It displays other similar apps that may be interesting for the user.
