EMPE CHRONICLES Stories and news about how Kempe is leading the fight against child abuse and neglect, and how your support is making all the difference in these young lives. The Kempe Chronicles is a quarterly publication of: Fall 2011 Issue 6 The Kempe Foundation at The Gary Pavilion • Children’s Hospital Colorado • Anschutz Medical Campus 13123 E 16th Ave, B390 • Aurora, CO 80045 • www.kempe.org OUR PASSION FOR HELPING KIDS starts at the top. There is new energy in the air and a spark of excitement around Kempe. We are coming off the heels of a successful summer and looking forward to the future. On August 1, we welcomed new Kempe Center Executive Director, Dr. Des Runyan. Under Dr. Runyan’s leadership and with his strategic vision, The Kempe Center will begin offering mental health clinic services to children and families in early 2012, treating more abused children than ever before and helping to break the generational cycle of abuse. The Kempe Center and Foundation will also expand prevention and awareness efforts in the community. Also in August, many Kempe supporters, myself included, joined 150 climbers on the slopes of Mount Bierstadt during the 6th Annual IP5280 Climbing for Kids event, raising money for Kempe and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Participation in the Kempe Klimbers team nearly quintupled from the 2010 team. The following week, The Kempe Foundation Alliance hosted the most fabulous event of the summer, Salt on the Rim. The spectacular views, festive decor, delicious food, wonderful margaritas and electrifying live music added to one of the best events I have ever attended. do something about it. Forty years later, The Center continues to fulfill its vision. The second milestone is the 50th anniversary of the publication of “The Battered Child Syndrome.” In 1962, Dr. C. Henry Kempe and his colleagues led the identification and recognition of child abuse with this defining Pat Peterson paper. Publication of “The Battered Child Syndrome” was the single most significant event in creating awareness and exposing the reality of abuse. Throughout 2012, we will celebrate these milestones with events and awareness activities. With a history of excellence and a new vision for the future, The Kempe Center and The Kempe Foundation are moving forward with more conviction, energy and passion for helping abused and neglected children. Please help us honor the legacy of Dr. C. Henry Kempe and the efforts of The Kempe Center by supporting child abuse treatment and prevention in this 40th anniversary year and for the next 40 years and beyond! Sincerely, We need to keep this momentum going during the rest of 2011 and as the new year begins. Looking ahead to 2012, The Kempe Center will celebrate two huge milestones. Pat Peterson, B.S.N., J.D. President and Chief Executive Officer, The Kempe Foundation First, the Center will have its 40th anniversary. The Kempe Center opened in 1972 with one vision: to recognize that children were being abused, the threat was real, and we must P.S. The winter holiday season is quickly approaching. Please give the gift of hope by financially supporting abused and neglected children treated at Kempe. Kempe News Kempe Center’s Don Bross Receives Ronald C. We Want the Ripples. A close friend of mine said to me the other day Andy Boian that he believes the tough stuff we’re all going through economically is all part of a bigger master plan to keep us conscious of just how good we really do have it. My immediate response was to find fault with his argument, but I then began to think about just how plausible it really is. More than half of this world lives in poverty. In some areas, women and children live in fear of abuse and death every day. In others, young boys are taught that killing is righteous and their solemn duty as citizens. Right here in the United States, there is an ever-increasing gap between the “haves” and the “have nots,” something candidates running for office used to talk about often. I recently became the chairman of the Kempe Foundation, a fundraising organization set up to assist in the prevention of and treatment for those children traumatized by abuse and neglect. It has caused me to think about how much we, as human beings, tend not to realize how much our actions affect others. Child abuse increases when the economy turns for the worse, with large natural disasters, or when either one of the parents in the home loses a job--just to name a few. Crying babies or perhaps even the loss of a game by your favorite sports team can trigger short tempers and inappropriate acts. Despite a major economic advantage, the U.S. has some of the highest child abuse statistics among the major industrialized countries of the world. I long for the day when we, as a people, figure out why it seems so hard to understand that despite how tough it is, regardless of how pressure-filled we all feel to make ends meet, we have it so much better than more than half of the world. Maybe something to keep in mind the next time your favorite sports team loses a game. Kempe Center Doctors Listed in 5280’s Top Docs 2011 5280 magazine named three of The Kempe Center’s doctors to its 2011 Top Docs list. Dr. Antonia Chiesa, Andrew Sirotnak, MD, FAAP and Dr. Kathryn Wells appear in the Child Abuse Pediatrics specialty section. The three doctors are members of The Kempe Child Protection Team. Dr. Sirotnak makes his third appearance in the Top Docs issue. He is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Director of the Kempe Child Protection Team. This is the second appearance for Dr. Chiesa and Dr. Wells. Dr. Chiesa serves as a Senior Instructor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Denver and Health Science Center and attending physician of the Kempe Child Protection Team. Dr. Wells is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Medical Director of the Denver Family Crisis Center at Denver Health Medical Center, and is attending physician with The Kempe Child Protection Team. Dr. Edward Goldson also appeared in the Top Docs list for DevelopmentalBehavioral Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Goldson conducts education and training seminars with The Kempe Center. Support Kempe on Colorado Gives Day December 6 first place winner in each group will be awarded the High Five prize. Next year also marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of “The Battered Child Syndrome.” Fifty years after its original publication, “The Battered Child Syndrome” continues to be the top download on www.kempe.org. We will honor these milestones with awareness and special events in 2012. The Kempe Center and Foundation are living legacies of Dr. Kempe and his belief that every child deserves a life free of abuse and neglect. The Kempe Center and Foundation has touched the hearts and minds of children, professionals, individuals, and communities across the country and with each new move, Kempe continues the fight to stop child abuse and neglect while granting a more hopeful future for children and their families. For more information on Kempe’s history and the anniversaries, visit www.kempe.org/4050. She lost custody of her fouryear-old son, Tobey, to a drug-related charge and he entered the foster care system. She also faced possible jail time if she violated her probation. Meredith began working with Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC), who helped her enter substance abuse and parenting programs. If she passed all of the programs, she might one day regain custody of Tobey. TASC referred her to Meghan Dahlin, MA, LPC, CFI, a mental health clinician with the Kempe Access to Services for Parent Infant/Child Relationship Enhancement (ASPIRE) Program. ASPIRE treats trauma exposed children to ensure that these children do not become abusers themselves. ASPIRE is a component of The Justice Initiative for Drug Endangered Families (JI-DEF), which provides opportunities for parental substance recovery, the prevention of child maltreatment, and reduction of child welfare involvement and out of home placement when appropriate. Starting in May, Meredith and Dahlin met once a week, weather permitting. At first, Meredith lacked motivation and felt reluctant to meet with Dahlin. She did not see how issues with attachment and discipline affected her relationship with Tobey. “There were hard times at first, like getting motivated to get him back,” she said. Soon after her meetings with Dahlin started, Meredith came to the realization that she wanted to succeed and see her son again. The road to recovery was not easy. Not only did Meredith have Dahlin to hold her accountable for her treatment, but she also had to fulfill other components of the JI-DEF program in order to see Tobey again. During her weekly meetings, Dahlin taught her different parenting techniques. One constructive discipline idea she learned was Magic 1-2-3. This involved counting to one, two, then three each time Tobey misbehaved. If she reached the number three, then Tobey had to spend three minutes in time out. This way, he would learn the consequences for his negative actions in a nonabusive way. “I didn’t believe it would work at first,” she said. “But it actually worked. Meghan was such a great coach and it turned out to be really helpful.” Meredith now had someone she could talk to and teach her how to become a good mother to Tobey. She needed someone to be in her corner and could count on for support. Even between their weekly meetings, Meredith could reach Dahlin by phone any time she needed someone to talk with for help. With her new support system in place and her treatment completed at the beginning of September; she soon regained custody of her son. Back home with his mother, Tobey is flourishing. Every morning, he attends preschool and he spends afternoons in day care. His social skills have improved and he has a great relationship with his friends, who hug him goodbye everyday when he leaves preschool. Meredith is also succeeding. She is attending college and one day dreams of becoming a pilot. She feels a huge sense of relief and much less stress. Meredith found the support system she needed to hold her accountable and make her a better parent. And now, Tobey has the support he needs from his mom. According to Meredith, “I’m really happy for how everything has turned out.” Pseudonyms have been used and photographs substituted to protect the identity of the children and family members served by The Kempe Center. Sanya Andersen-Vie w w w. k e m p e . o r g • 5 Kempe Trauma Program Trains Professionals in Seoul & Hong Kong This summer, Monica Fitzgerald, PhD of The Kempe Center’s Child Trauma Program visited Seoul, South Korea for a conference and then traveled to Hong Kong, China for a seminar and intensive training with clinicians. The Support Center for Women and Children Victims of Violence in Seoul organized the “1st Anniversary Symposium” forum to celebrate their first year. Dr. Fitzgerald delivered the “Foreign Expert Keynote Address” on understanding and treatment of intra-familial sexual abuse and gave an overview of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT; www.musc.edu/tfcbt). She provided information on evidence-based practices in the child trauma field. On the second day, she did a more in-depth overview of TF-CBT as an introduction to the model in hopes that the professionals would seek formal training in evidence-based TF-CBT treatments. For these events, a translator provided simultaneous, live translation. The training was timely because the Korean translation of the TF-CBT treatment book will come out soon. Attendees included practitioners from agencies for women and child victims of sexual violence, including counselors; majors in counseling/psychology interested in child sexual abuse, treating trauma, or cognitive-behavior therapy; and members of the Korean Counseling Psychological Association and Korean Psychological Association. Most of the attendees provide crisis intervention to victims and psychological treatment. Dr. Fitzgerald then traveled to Hong Kong and trained the first group of mental health clinicians (masters level therapists, social workers, and psychologists) in China to become formally trained in TF-CBT. The clinicians who participated in the training are highly committed to learning how to integrate trauma focused assessment and implementing TF-CBT with their trauma cases. Dr. Fitzgerald also provided them with an overview of TF-CBT applications with child traumatic grief cases. The TF-CBT treatment book was recently translated/ published into Chinese. Additionally, Dr. Fitzgerald will continue to provide this group of clinicians with ongoing monthly expert consultation in the model to facilitate their skill development. This will help overcome barriers to implementing this treatment model with diverse families in real practice settings in Hong Kong. She will use teleconference and web technology for consultation. Top: Dr. Fitzgerald in Seoul, South Korea Middle: Training in Hong Kong Bottom: TF-CBT Training in Hong Kong Kempe Center’s Diane Baird trains majority of Montana child welfare workers By The Kempe Foundation Staff Throughout the summer, The Kempe Center’s Diane Baird, LCSW visited 12 sites throughout Montana over a six week period and met with nearly all child welfare workers in the state. She presented her day-and-half presentation, “If You’re Not Building Health, You’re Reinforcing Pathology,” traveling to five geographic regions in Montana. “Child welfare happens at the caseworker level,” said Baird. “The focus of the training was on healthy, non-abusive parent child relationships.” The training involved therapeutic visitation to change relationships, evaluate relationships and move toward a relationship focus. This means that 6 • w w w. k e m p e . o r g professionals do not just treat the parent, then treat the child; instead, they work on the relationship between the two. Baird has visited Montana each year since 2005. Many of the workers she trained have been in their positions for 20 years or more and they value the relationship with The Kempe Center. “The Kempe Center has a great reputation among professionals throughout the region,” said Baird. As a Kempe Center staff member, Baird has the ability to present current research and new ideas to many areas within the state of Montana including geographically isolated ones. Internet access and distance learning makes more of these trainings possible, but Baird enjoys visiting the locations and meeting one-on-one with people. Corporate Spotlight: Innovative Program Partners Kempe & the Business Community - Charity of Choice By Steve Harrell, The Kempe Foundation The signs of child abuse are often difficult to discern. For Teresa, an innocent bath time question from her five-year-old son Tyler led to the discovery that he had been inappropriately touched by a trusted family friend. For Jackie it was having the courage to step forward as a 15-year-old and acknowledge that her stepfather had sexually abused her from the age of 12. For 7-year-old foster child Jackson it was continuing to believe that someday he, too, would have a “forever family.” While their stories are quite different, one thing all of these children share is that each received direct support from The Kempe Center. Like hundreds of children each year they benefitted from Kempe programs designed to heal children from the effects of child abuse and neglect while also strengthening families. The sad truth is that child maltreatment continues to increase in Colorado while statistics are actually declining across the rest of the country. This presents Colorado and the companies who do business here with a choice. Do we look the other way and hope that child abuse and neglect simply goes away, or do we invest in real and lasting change? Fortunately, dozens of businesses and corporations do invest in the work of Kempe. We are gratified that many of them have asked, how can we do more? To not only answer this question but to also provide tangible proven methods for partnership success we now offer Charity of Choice. Charity of Choice is a great way for companies to invest in our community while partnering with their employees and providing an opportunity to support one of the world’s foremost teams of experts on the issue of child abuse and neglect. When businesses and corporations partner with Kempe through Charity of Choice they have a menu of support opportunities to choose from throughout the year. Some of these include outright gifts; event sponsorship; employee giving campaigns; corporate foundation gifts; 3rd party promotions; employee volunteering and corporate board engagement. Charitable gifts may also be made through many different programs such as grants, matching gifts, in-kind services or by naming a program or endowment. Companies recognize the value of their support. In fact, one recent survey found that, 84 percent of corporate executives believe that society expects businesses to take a more active role in social issues than it has done in the past. Another survey found that, 72 percent of Americans want their employers to do more to support a cause or social issue, and 93 percent say it is important for their employer to provide them with opportunities to become involved. As a corporate executive, business owner or employee of either; you can make a difference! Consider Charity of Choice as the vehicle that provides your company with improved customer loyalty; enhanced reputation and standing in the community as well as increased name recognition and brand awareness. All of which provide value to your company. But as we all know, the real value comes in making a positive and life-changing difference in the life of a child. Tyler is now self-confident and enjoying his best T-Ball season ever. Jackie is pursuing her college degree and wishes to someday work with children and families. And Jackson – Jackson has been adopted and now has a “forever family.” Please consider becoming a Charity of Choice partner today. Like Jackson, the benefits can last forever. Each year, we seek generous sponsors to “adopt” families in need or buy gifts from our children’s wish lists to Santa. This means we need teddy bears, toy cars, dolls, art supplies, winter clothes, gift cards, Legos, puzzles, and other gifts for kids struggling with the aftermath of abuse. Due to the health concerns associated with working alongside Children’s Hospital Colorado staff and patients, we cannot accept used items. Donated items should be in their original packaging and/or have their original tags still attached. For a list of specific holiday giving needs or to arrange a donation, please contact Christi Stafford at 303-864-5315 or e-mail [email protected]. US Bank decorated a toy donation display with a “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” theme during the 2010 Hugs for the Holidays toy drive. Kempe receives hundreds of holiday toy donations each year from individuals and corporations. Foundations, government agencies and corporations make it possible for The Kempe Foundation and Center to provide programs and services as we work toward the ultimate goal of bringing an end to child abuse. Major gifts and grants ($25,000 and above) received from April 1 to August 31, 2011 designated for the general operations and programs of the Foundation and Center include: The Daniels Fund continues to demonstrate its respect for and confidence in Kempe’s Fostering Healthy Futures (FHF) Program by supporting clinical services for 9-11 year old children who have been placed in foster care due to maltreatment. While participating in FHF, the children benefit from an academic year-long program of receiving assessments for better targeting of comprehensive services, weekly skills groups, individualized mentoring by graduate students being supervised by FHF staff, a career shadowing component and interacting with panelists who have experienced out-of-home placements and have gone on to become contributing members of society. The Denver Post Season to Share has committed to its third consecutive year of major funding for Kempe. Partial funding provided help to support the Therapeutic Preschool from June through August and the remainder is to be used for the development and initial delivery of new mental health services for preschool aged children. The Timothy and Bernadette Marquez Foundation has funded a new grant for Kempe’s Child Protection Team (CPT) which is now in its 53rd year of providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary consultation, assessment, treatment and referral services for children and adolescents who may have been sexually of physically abused or neglected. Last year the CPT saw a 22 percent increase in services delivered to children in the Denver metropolitan area. Mile High United Way’s second year of School Readiness Community Initiative funding was designated to assist the Therapeutic Preschool through August, with the remainder to be determined pending approval of the new mental health services for preschool aged children to be defined by an inclusionary process of determining community needs and expertise to be provided by Kempe staff. Rose Community Foundation’s second grant to support Fussy Baby Network Colorado is evidenced by a new 18-month funding commitment. The four goals of FBNC during the grant period are to: 1) Increase access to and service delivery for families in need; 2) Target expansion of service to monolingual and bilingual Spanish speaking population; 3) Implement FBNC model into pediatric primary care; and, 4) Identify and evaluate mechanisms of sustainability and diversified funding sources to maintain and expand FBNC services. FBNC uses an approach which views intervention around infant crying as a unique opportunity to reduce infant risk by building family resilience while remaining highly attuned to risk and vulnerability in the baby, parent, or the family. Planned Giving: Women and Their Wills In the past, men usually were in charge of a family estate. Times have certainly changed. Following World War II, women have become much more active in the workplace and many families now have two working partners. In addition, women have a longer life expectancy. As a result, it has become their decision as to how the remaining estate should be planned. For this reason alone, women need wills. There are laws which establish rules for the disposition of your estate at your death, whether or not you have a will. Your assets will go somewhere at your death, but do you know where they will go if you have no will? There is no reason to wonder. Prepare a will so that you know what will happen to your assets. By preparing a will you not only provide and protect your loved ones and those close to you, but you are also afforded the opportunity to designate your ongoing support of The Kempe Foundation by naming our organization as a beneficiary in your will. There are any number of ways to benefit The Kempe Foundation through your will, of which your attorney or financial advisor can advise you. The Kempe Foundation is also happy to assist you with recommendations. For example, Kempe Foundation Board Member Mark Smith, a repeatedly recognized top financial advisor and principal of M.J. Smith and Associates adds that, “If The Kempe Foundation is named as a beneficiary of an IRA it will allow them (donors) or their heirs to escape any and all income and any applicable estate taxes.” Simply stated, your will is the means by which you control disposition of your property/assets, minimize taxes and transfer expenses, provide for the special needs of any relatives or friends, and identify the person or persons who will carry out your wishes. You spend a large part of your life working hard to earn money to look after yourself, to provide for your family and to save for your future. Estate planning will help you control what happens to you and your assets should you be unable to take care of yourself and in the event of your death. Don’t put it off any longer. Take control and plan for tomorrow, today. It is wise to consult with your attorney or financial advisor when organizing your estate plan. Please inform Kempe of your planned gift so that we can make certain your intentions are understood and also recognize you as a Kempe Society Member.
