COMMUNITY NEWS IDEAS DATES SUGGESTIONS EVENTS POINTS OF VIEW NEWS Grapevine THE November ‘09 THE NEWSLETTER OF FLACKWELL HEATH 50p COMMUNITY A S SOCIATION Remembrance Sunday 8 November 2009 Photo: Meg Scullion Carols last year Crafts, Carols and Christmas Lights Christmas begins in Flackwell Heath on Saturday 5 December when there will be a Craft Fayre in the Community Centre immediately followed as day turns to dusk by the Carol Concert and lighting up the Christmas tree on the Green. The FH Residents’ Association Craft Fayre will have some twenty stalls offering all you need for your Christmas gift shopping. You will find something to suit all ages from the youngest children to the wisest grannies. It opens at 10.30 and runs through to 4 pm. The necessary accompaniments to a burst of jolly retail therapy will be on hand all day with morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea readily available. As I write there are still a couple of stalls available which may be hired by contacting Maureen Sheppard on 01628 523738. The Christmas Carols will start at 4.45 by the Christmas tree on the village green. The event will be led by Rev Chris Bull, Vicar of Christ Church. There will be sheets with the words so it would be sensible to bring a torch. Afterwards there will be mulled wine, mulled apple juice and mince pies in the Community Centre. The West Wycombe Brass Band, the tree and the lights are paid for by the FH Residents’ Association from the profits of the Cherry Fayre and other fund raising events. Fireworks Night The Annual Flackwell Heath Family Fireworks evening will be held at the Carrington School Sports Field at the end of Chapel Lane on 7 November. Gates open 6pm split between the three organisations and are used to provide facilities for Flackwell Heath children and teenagers in the schools, scouts and guides. The Fireworks have been running yearly for 16 years with the exception of last year where torrential rain and high winds meant the display had to be cancelled at the very last minute. Anyone who bought a ticket to last year’s show (and still has it) can use it to get in this year. The bonfire will be lit just before 7pm. The firework display will be in two parts with a break in between for a cup of tea, pint of beer, mulled wine, hot dog or other snacks. Torches, novelties and glow sticks, will also on sale. Teams of volunteers from Carrington School Parents Association, Friends of Juniper Hill and 1st Flackwell Scout Group run the event. All profits get Entrance is £6 each on the day or £5 each if you get the tickets from the schools or Flackwell Heath shops before the 7th. Rory Maguire We will assemble at the front of the Legion HQ at around 10.00 The parade to the memorial at 10.30 will be led by four standard bearers followed by Legion members with the Royal Artillery Association, Scouts, Guides and the Girls Brigade. All members of the public are welcome to join the Legion in parading to and from the memorial. Music will be provided by our piper, Glen Lockhart, and the West Wycombe Silver Band under the direction of Marilyn Gray. The service will be conducted by our hon. Legion Chaplin, the Rev Christopher Bull, Vicar of Christ Church. At approximately 12.00 there will be the presentation of the President’s awards in memory of Max Chivers DFC and Philip Lawrence. The shields and plaques will be presented to units of the Scouts, Guides and Girls Brigade units by Patrick Jessiman President of the FH Branch of the Royal British Legion, and by Club President, Gordon Winterton. Did you do National Service? Last year I had a letter from Geoff Hughes who was born in the village and lived here for 23 years until he got married and moved to Wycombe. He still keeps in close touch with Flackwell Heath. Editor. “ I was in the parade last year. I was too young for the Second World War, I am 75 so I did my bit in the RAF National Service. What I would like is to appeal to all National Service lads in the village to join the parade. Otherwise in the future there will be no older members in the parade. So come on, lads, make an effort to join in. Come and swell the ranks. See you all in 2009”. Cherry Fayre 2010 Flackwell Retailers When you hear a boom of Royal to join together It may surprise you to know that our village shopkeepers hardly talk to each other. When we talked to them we found they all had similar concerns but they felt too isolated to come together in a joint approach. The Flackwell Heath Residents’ Association invited all the shops, pubs and restaurants in the village to a meeting to discuss how they could help each other, what support they would like from the Residents’ Association and how they in turn could contribute to the Residents’ Association. There are some 45 retail businesses in the village and fifteen were represented at the first meeting. It quickly became clear that the main topic of concern was security and relations with the police. We like to think of Flackwell Heath as a pleasant law abiding village but we have had a bank ram-raided and incidents of shop lifting and anti-social behaviour. Businesses were also concerned about the future of the row of shops opposite Barclays in The Common. There are no signs that the former HSBC bank will be reinstated as a shop and the former betting shop has not been tenanted for several years. More down to earth problems included the provision and placing of litter bins but even as I write the Associations’ Planning and Environment Group are talking to the appropriate Council staff. The next Business Group meeting on Tuesday 3 November will start to take action on the businesses’ other concerns. We will be joined by our Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), Daton Beckford (it’s his day off but he will be coming anyway) and Jetta Peddie from BusinessWatch. Vic Grewal will explain how he and the PCSO in Chorleywood were able to reduce shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in and around his shop. Next year it will be 65 year since the end of the Second World War. And the theme of the Fayre will be will be the 40s – the era of Vera (top of the pops again) Lynn, Dad’s Army, Glenn Miller and thousands of men returning home to Civvy Street. And thousands not. The parade will include members of the Royal British Legion in WW2 uniforms; the Cherry Fayre Committee and others disguised as Home Guard accompanied by Cpl Jones’s authentic van; ladies with their mothers’ Land Army uniforms or even better, their own uniforms; people who just enjoy dressing up in 1940s uniforms or the New Look. They are looking for a Captain Mannering lookalike. This is your chance to recreate a British hero and our finest comedy character. If you would like to dress up in 1940s character and join the parade please contact Terry Darby 01628 523375. Ashley Hopkins would also like to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in planning the Fayre, doing the practical jobs like setting it up on the day or staffing some of the stalls. 01628 648700 Last years Fayre was a great success both financially and for the fun of the day. David Onslow received a presentation and a round of applause for leading the organising group; Terry Darby and Meg and Mike Scullion were also thanked for the contribution to the Cherry Fayres they have made over the years. He sold it and settled down to a quiet retirement - which he bore for 18 months. Then he fell into the temptation of owning one last pub. There is no shortage of pubs on the market and Jim thought the Three Horse Shoes had the potential for success. He was fortunate that he was able to bring with him his chef from the days in Cookham. Keith Whittier-Howarth has been a chef all his life and his experience includes a couple of decades in Spain and Portugal. No staff team at the Three Horse Shoes would be complete without Linda who works behind the bar and Jeff who is there most evenings. There is a sporty theme for the decorations. James likes all sports but especially rugby. In his youth he played at County level for Leicestershire. Under James and Keith The Old Swan Uppers was a successful bar and restaurant pub and they are confident they can repeat their success in Flackwell Heath. They began by completely redecorating the restaurant and bar area, renovating the toilets and the kitchen. Their aim is to be a family friendly pub with a wide range of meals ranging from bar snacks at £2.95 through to T-Bone steaks at £14.95 or a rack of English lamb at £13.95. They also have a kiddies’ menu. OAPs will get our Sunday roast for only £5.95. (£7.95 for those unfortunates burdened by youth.) Keith the Chef told me that he does not buy in ready made meals; the food he serves should be prepared in his own kitchen – but he concedes it is difficult to make ice cream as good as factory made. It seemed to me that the menu prices were at the reasonable end for quality pub food. They are now taking bookings from families, firms and organisations for Christmas meals and office parties up to Christmas Eve. 01628 520541 to book a table. Continuing on from our very successful Summer Concert (which featured a rather large number of red balloons) we now invite you to join us in celebrating Christmas. All concerts will be held in Christ Church and the first one will be a candlelit concert on Thursday 10 December. The following two concerts, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 will feature our very popular Gift Stall, where you can purchase your last minute stocking fillers. Each evening we invite you to enjoy a complimentary drink and mince pie and after the interval we are pleased to welcome back our favourite gentleman, Father Christmas, who will be dropping in with his bag of sweets and some more of Rudolph’s jokes! Tickets are £8 obtainable from Joan McNamara on 01628 526111 or any choir member and the concerts all start at 8pm. In addition to the concerts in Flackwell Heath the choir have been invited to participate in the Mayors Christmas Appeal Concert in the Swan Theatre on Sunday afternoon 6 December. Ticket details from the Swan Theatre or Choir Members. See you in December. Pam Gresswell Christ Church has an exciting new website! Visit www.ccfh.org. uk for details of all that happens at your Parish Church. Methodist Church Lots of people attended our 11th Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on 26 September. We were entertained by local pianist and composer, Alex Routledge. Thanks to all who helped or supported the event, including local company Softcat who made a donation in return for some cookies, we raised an amazing £355! Our Harvest services and tea were well attended and we were able to pack a car boot full of pasta, rice and other staples for a charity in Romania, Street Children Pro Deo. We heard the good news that, although there are still street children, the situation has improved considerably. The charity will be seeking to also help the elderly as some are very poor. There were lots of envelopes on the money tree for CLEM, a charity working in Bolivia (our treasurer is away so I don’t know the total). Local people were not forgotten as tins, packets and flowers were delivered. Sunday 1 November is our Chapel Anniversary. There have been services in Flackwell Heath since 1822. The church was built in 1832 and extended in 1863. The hall was added in the 1920s. The date we celebrate on is the reopening in 1984 when the cinema seats were replaced and we got inside toilets amongst many other improvements. We will also celebrate our Sunday School Anniversary, when the children will receive books. M artin V e h i c l e s e r V i c i n g Thinking of getting married in 2010? There are two community governor vacancies at present. Governors come from all sections of the community: parents, retired people, the business world, representatives of local councils and churches. There is always a need for enthusiastic and committed people to serve as governors, who can make important decisions about how schools are run. If you are interested in education, and want to find out more please contact the school office to be put in touch with a current governor to have a chat. Juniper Hill school office: 01628 523536 Debbie Kite Chair of Governors to have these bins maintained so let’s make it worthwhile and use them rather than leaving the mess around to cause a health hazard and messy shoes. Another problem is the amount of discarded cigarette ends, apart from being difficult to pick up I gather that these take around 15 years to degrade completely and have been shown to cause pockets of pollution due to the nicotine and other waste products concentrating as they decompose. On a more positive note we didn’t find all the used bus tickets we did the time before so well done for that. Please consider joining us for our next effort to tidy up the village, we would really welcome you. There is now a big gap in Heath End Road where ‘The Magpie’ once stood. At the time of writing the appeal by Michael Shanly Homes for building 9 homes on the site is still in progress. We will update you when we hear more. Lastly, thanks for contacting me on a range of issues; it is good to hear your comments and concerns, which we do try to address. Carolyn Leonard 01628 526512 Chair of the Planning & Environment Group Age Concern The Age Concern Day Centre celebrated 25 years of service to the community by holding a supper dance which was very successful – not a fund raising affair but which managed to raise approximately £500. The clients also enjoyed a party atmosphere all week and also the birthday cake made specially for the occasion. Now we look forward with interest to the future and the amalgamation of Age Concern with Help the Aged. At the moment it is watch this space but whatever the outcome the Day Centre will continue. During the summer, the Morning Institute had a coach outing to Bournemouth and Poole, and the Evening Institute a coach and boat trip to Mapledurham, near Reading. We visited the house and the working Beat Surgeries at Budgen’s You may have noticed that the Police and Neighbourhood Watch have held the last two ‘Beat Surgeries’ outside Budgen’s on a Saturday morning, rather than at Christ Church. This change is part of the local police commander’s strategy to make his officers more accessible to the public. A Date for your Diary On Friday 11 December, an significant Meeting for the local NHWatch areas will be held at the Wye Valley School commencing at 7.00 pm. Speakers will include Dominic Grieve MP. Card Cloning There has been a spate of card cloning of late, and several residents report their cards being used fraudulently in the Far East. As in the past, garages seem to feature prominently in the ‘cloning arena’. How they do it is open to speculation, but it has been suggested that the card machines have been tampered with in some way to send your card details to another Photo: Sue Arnautov watermill, which grinds flour. There were several County events during the summer and early autumn which members had enjoyed: an afternoon concert by 'mediaeval' minstrels at Hall Barn , a craft afternoon at Taplow and a 'cryptic crossword workshop'. An evening of "Quilts and Quavers" featured an excellent speaker who described her innovations in the use of folding, tucks and texture in fabric, and her computer, and that a ‘hidden’ camera records your entry of the PIN number. With your card and PIN numbers, the rest is easy! The key thing is to protect your PIN. Ensure that no-one or any thing is ‘looking over your shoulder’ or ‘down from above’ when you enter your PIN. Use your free hand to conceal what you are entering! Property Marking The latest Parish Newsletter includes an article on Community Safety with a specific reference to property marking using the product ‘SelectaDNA’ A limited number of packs are being made available to residents at a discounted price of £22, each sufficient to mark up to 50 items. With the current incidence of burglary that we have been experiencing, this is a valuable tool in the armoury of deterrence, and can be used to securely mark and identify a wide range of products. Remember, only 5% of stolen goods are ever reunited with their rightful owners due to lack of positive identification. Winter is here By the time you read this, the clocks will have gone back an hour, and the evenings will get dark that much earlier. Make sure that you have reset any timers that you use to operate security devices such as lamps, radio, One member went to an International Day on Holland, with speakers on bulbs, Dutch flower paintings and brothels. (Hampshire WIs are campaigning to get legislation on brothels reconsidered, and the speaker had visited establishments in Holland, New Zealand and the USA). r Next month, the Morning WI meets on Nov 4th; the speaker is Barbara Taylor on 'Up the Amazon without a Paddle'. There is a shopping trip to Westfield on 11 November which is open to members and friends. The Evening WI holds its Birthday Party on 12 November with a meal and a magician. The Committee is an efficient group of seven people who are responsible for financing, maintaining and running the Community Centre. It also owns the Grapevine. With the assistance of professional expertise, the Committee maintains and improves the fabric of the building and raises the quality of the facilities. It manages the letting of the Centre and the cleaning contract. To maintain the current high standards, it raises money from letting fees, events like the up coming Wine Tasting, the Summer Serenade classical concerts and dances. It has also been very effective in raising money from local sources to support their work. The Management Committee meets about once a month and reports quarterly to representatives of the users of the Centre. In theory, all residents of the village are entitled to come to the AGM and elect members of the Committee but in practice it is the users of the Centre who come to the AGM. On 12 November 1999 it moved from a house in Heath End Road (recently demolished) with Angela Kennelly at the helm. There have been very few members of staff throughout the 10 years, and there are presently 5 members of staff, with Patricia Brannigan as Library Manager. The library’s present home was once a dining room as part of Carrington Junior School and prior to that it was the Community Centre. There are ladies in the village who become quite misty eyed at the mention of the wonderful dances they used to have there and strolling home on a summer’s evening. Over the 10 years the library itself has evolved, they now have a good selection of DVDs, magazines, spoken word CDs alongside their range of fiction and non fiction books. They also have internet access available to all, which includes free reference sites such as Enc. Brit., Oxford Art and Music Online, Times Digital Archives and Who's Who. If you are interested in tracing your family tree they also have access to "Ancestry" site to get you on your way. You can also find out all about your local community, the various clubs and committees and events that happen on a regular basis in the village.
