President’s Column
There will be a Board position up for
re-election this January at the annual
meeting, January 10-11 at the National
Western Stock Show in Denver.
Please give some consideration to this
position if you can effectively participate in ALR functions and donate the
necessary time. Use of email is vital!
Send a “bio” to the office to be published in the Winter edition of the
Lowline Ledger.
Our numbers continue to grow. Our
cattle are selling for remarkable prices
and the supply still does not meet demand. Remember, this has generally been
established by the hard work and dedication of our membership who made the
National Western Show and Sale a reality. Bring your cattle this year! Participate
in the show! Be an active part of growing this breed!

PLAN NOW FOR NATIONAL WESTERN
As summer ends and we begin to plan for weaning and the long
winter, it’s time to begin preparation for the 2006 National
Western Lowline Show and Sale in Denver, Colorado. This has
been the premier event for our breed and has showcased our
Lowline cattle since 1996.
This sale will be our sixth NationalALR Sale. Last year’s event
took our breed to new heights with several records set for our
breed. We want your participation in this year’s event and hope
you can make plans to attend whether it is as a member, consignor or buyer of the top Lowline seedstock in the world.
The 2006 National Lowline Sale is at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January
10. The Lowline show is at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 11.
All members of the American Lowline Registry will receive
entry forms by mail and they will be able to access the entry
forms on line at www.usa-lowline.org.
Sale entries are due November 5 to:
John Reed, sale manager
30217 110th Ave.
Brooten, MN 56316.
Sale cattle must also be entered in the National Western Stock
Show. Call 1.800.336.6977 for your premium book if you do not
already receive one.
If you are planning on consigning cattle to this years sale, here
are a few guidelines to help you prepare.
• Check your pastures now and select possible sale animals and
alternates in case of problems with your first choices. Remember,
this is our showcase, select your best quality cattle to bring premium prices in the sale.
• Vaccinate calves prior to weaning and booster in 3 weeks or at
weaning. Deworm. It is most important to Brucellosis (Bangs)
vaccinate heifer calves as some states will not accept non-vaccinated heifers.
• Now is also a great time to draw blood for DNA on fullblood
cattle. Remember, this is the busiest time of year at the ALR and
calves need to be registered prior to the show and sale.
• Get your registration applications, if not already registered, to
the ALR in October to be sure they are completed by January.
• Cattle need to be broke to lead. Begin halter breaking after
cattle are weaned and started on feed.
• If this is your first National Western, please realize that cattle
need to be properly clipped and groomed for the show and sale.
Contact someone with experience in your area to assist you in
preparing the cattle for the show.
• Be sure to have proper health papers in hand when you head to
Denver. Consult the NWSS premium book and your local veterinarian and be sure proper protocol is followed. You will be
receiving more information on the National Western in the next
Lowline Ledger and on the ALR web site. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact John Reed at
www.barjranch.com or phone-320/346-2750.
Lowline Ledge Display Advertising Rates
Recently the ALR Board acted to enable breeders to advertise in The Lowline Ledger with display type messages. Below are the
rates, which are really a bargain. The Lowline Ledger is mailed to all ALR members, plus those who have inquired about the breed.
If you want to reach the greatest number of interested potoential buyers, consider placing an ad in the next editon.
Rates are for camera-ready artwork. If you need help designing an ad, give the office a call at 816-221-0641.

Fair Show, Kansas City’s American Royal and Denver’s 2006 National Western Stock Show. This puts forth a goal for
each of us to focus on and for all of us to achieve.

took 3rd in carcass data at the Denver
show and will try to get specifics on this
for publication in the Ledger. Jim confirmed that the Lowline Ledger is available on our web site.
Jim Spawn passed out and reviewed the
2005 Activity Report year to date. He
noted an increase in activity in all categories. Because there is typically an
increase in registrations toward the end of
the year it is projected that we may surpass 1,000 registrations in 2005.
George Jenkins proposed a ‘bull alley’ of
mature Lowline bulls be displayed at the
Denver show. George agreed to arrange
and coordinate this. We would likely only
be able to display 5-6 bulls this year, but
this would be a great way to show off
what our mature bulls look like.
Jim also reported that the amount of work
on hold has dramatically decreased. He
credited this to the successful implementation of a policy adopted by the Board last
year. This policy allows for work on hold
to be dropped, if after six months following communication from the office notifying the submitter as to what missing information is required to complete processing
the information has not been provided.
Mike Standley introduced Tim Heindel
with the Iowa State Fair. Tim welcomed
the Lowline breeders back to the Fair. He
reported that due to crowded conditions
they are continuing to look at options for
stalling livestock. He also reminded us
that although our number of entries
showed improvement this year the Fair
rules call for 25 head to be from Iowa
farms. Tim requested breeder suggestions
for show judges to the Events Director,
Dianna. Connie Mercer requested that the
Fair reconsider making purchase of chute
and admission passes available again from
the livestock check-in office.
Jim reviewed the favorable financial
status of the Registry.
Cindy Jackson asked about having
Registration certificates resent to owners
after submitting weaning weight data on
animals. It was explained that this data
can be stored on her Registry database,
but we do not have the numbers of animals at the current time to complete any
data analysis with this information.
Shari Schroeder reported on the status of
the on-line pedigree search. The programmer has completed the program and on
Wednesday this week was provided with a
full set of records to load into the database. The Board will review the site prior
to a link being placed on the web site.
Jim Spawn called for members to submit
articles and particularly photographs for
our new magazine-type Lowline Ledger.
John Floyd also requested pictures, but
emphasized the need for a story to go with
those pictures. Neil Effertz suggested contacting Dr Kris Ringwall for permission to
reprint his articles on Lowline beef
research. George Jenkins mentioned that
there was a pen of half blood steers that
12

John Floyd reminded everyone of the
upcoming ALR sponsored American
Royal. He called for everyone to help
make this show a continued success with
their participation. Shari Schroeder reported that the show is set for Oct 20 at 2 p.m.
Premium books and entry forms are online. Greg Alsup has been selected by the
American Royal as our show judge. Neil
Effertz asked for suggestions on the judge
for next year. He also commented that the
continued growth of breeders in and
around Colorado was due to the consistent
presence of the Lowline breeders at the
Denver Stock Show and encouraged
everyone to participate in this show/sale.
Neil reported that there are 18-19 head
committed to the American Royal
Lowline Sale from Michigan, North
Dakota, Minnesota, Missouir, and Kansas.
Because the Lowline market is really
good it is hard to find many animals for
the sale. Neil will limit the sale to no more
than five bulls. Expenses for the sale are
estimated to be 12-13%. 1% of the pro-
ceeds from the Sale will be donated to the
ALR for funding of a Junior Program.
Neil emphasized the desire for increased
focus on a Junior program building on
what has been started with the successful
Nebraska Junior show to get more juniors
involved with the breed. A discussion was
held about having additional ALR sponsored Junior shows and possibly additional sales in conjunction with the Iowa
Show and the Denver Show. Concerns
were expressed about having a sale at
Iowa due to a need to keep number of animals available to existing sales up and for
northern breeders, Iowa was too early to
wean spring calves. Neil Effertz made a
motion to establish a Junior Show at
Denver this year, motion seconded by
Connie Mechem. Motion carried.
John Reed formally thanked and acknowledged Mike Standley for his work again
this year on the Iowa State Fair. There are
54 head entered for this year’s show.
Jim Spawn requested everyone gather for
a group picture following the meeting.
Meeting adjourned at 10:53 a.m.
The Board Members present met for a
brief five minute meeting, immediately
following the meeting with the membership. Because the Lowline breed did not
have the required numbers at the Iowa
State Fair show last year we are on probation for this Show, therefore the Iowa
State Fair will not be paying any premiums for this show. Eric Craig moved that
ALR pay premiums, John Floyd seconded
the motion. Motion carried.

This and That
By John Floyd, ALR President
Thanks to all who brought their cattle to the annual summer
show at the Iowa State Fair. Fifty-four head were present this
year. Many tried and true members again showed up as well as
some new folks. We could not have done it without you! The
show was done very well and the winners were spread out
throughout the membership.
Four active Board members were present at the membership
forum. Our best news is the development of a Junior Program.
Bryan Thomsen has volunteered to chair a committee to grow
this program and promote the breed. Neil Effertz announced that
he’ll donate a percentage of the Kansas City Lowline Sale proceeds to the program. Thank you, gentlemen! We appreciate your
help with this.
National Western Stock Show
100th Year Anniversary
By Eric Craig
How awesome is that! We are going to be apart of history. It is
not every day that someone gets to celebrate a 100 year anniversary. This coming year in January 2006 the National Western
Stock show held in Denver Colorado will be celebrating 100
years of exhibiting livestock. As a board we have planned on
joining in on the celebration by bumping up this years premiums,
adding commemorative belt buckles for both % champions and
Fullblood champions and have also added the first National
Junior show to be held in Denver.
So if you haven’t ever been to the Denver show I sure would
start making plans now because you won’t want to miss this one!
As for those who are going to exhibit cattle or consider exhibiting cattle the entry deadlines will be the first part of November.
The premium books are being published this month and will be
out in early October or online at www.nationalwestern.com
Take this time to get your animals properly vaccinated and registered with the ALR before it gets too late. Make sure that your
Fullbloods are DNA tested and all the paper work is done if considering putting animals in the sale. There have been some
unfortunate cases the past two years with animals being bought
out in Denver that were carriers of BVD. So take the time now
to vaccinate your animals so that we can avoid this happening
again. There will be a write up about BVD in the next Ledger.
We are looking for sponsors for the Champion Belt buckles;
there will be 4 for the percentage champions and 4 for the
Fullblood champions. If anyone would like to sponsor one
please contact me Eric Craig concerning the price and which one
you would like to sponsor. And remember this show is going to
be exciting so make sure to book your rooms and plane reservations now. See ya there.

This was a great opportunity for the breeders along the front
range to promote their cattle. The show was a lot of fun and was
a great success with great awards and prizes. This show is sanctioned by the ALR and so hopefully we will have even more
breeders next year. There was a lot of interest in the breed and a
lot of people will be looking forward to the show next year.
Thanks to all those who helped make the show possible, all of
our sponsors and Boulder County. Also thank you ALR board for
getting this show sanctioned.
A big Thank You goes out to Dana Sekich who organized and
got the show up and running. Hope to see everyone next year.
