President’s Column
Greetings!
I do hope that all of you have had
a great summer. It has been very
hot and very dry here in Wyoming. I
keep wishing it would snow.
There will be a steer show in Kansas City at the American Royal. Registered steers from 25% to Fullbloods will be
shown. Weight and other requirements can be found in the
American Royal premium book.
There have been a few changes
made by the board that I want all of
you to be aware of. The first is that
we have decided to increase the
number of board members to seven.
This means that we will be electing three board members
to a three year term this fall to take effect after the National
Show in January 2013. There is a limit of three people from
any one region on the board at any given time. I do hope
that anyone who is interested in serving our membership in
this capacity will run.
The board has been working diligently to make things
better for all of our members and I hope you will find these
changes as improvements.
I hope all of you have a good fall and I look forward to
seeing you at a show or sale along the way. Take care and
please be kind to one another.
Janis
The National Sale Committee and the Board have decided that there will be a couple of changes to the National
Sale. There will be a sifting committee in Denver and animals that are not of National Sale quality will be sifted. Also,
all sale animals will be required to have DNA parent verification. If you plan on having a percentage animal in the
sale, please get your DNA done now. Fullblood animals already have met this requirement in order to be registered.

The times, they are a changin’!
We are on the cusp of a great revolution in the beef production infrastructure in North America. No longer can we
expect to produce beef with the “cheap corn” mentality that
has dominated our beef business for the past 70 years. We
as cattlemen and women must re-visit our production paradigms and focus on low cost, forage based beef production
utilizing some of the wasted co-products and by-products
of the crop production systems so dominant in American
agriculture.
This situation, so unique in agriculture, presents a golden
opportunity for the utilization of Lowline genetics in commercial beef processes to lower maintenance costs and
overhead by reducing cow size and improving the natural
fleshing ability of cattle while raising very high quality beef.
Our Lowline cattle can do more in one quick, convenient
cross to improve efficiency than any other breed out there.
Part of this is because of our natural high marbling characteristics and phenomenal tenderness and texture, insuring
a very highly rated eating experience on a low input grass
based finishing ration. The other part is due to the incredibly high ribeye area per hundredweight, even in our first
cross Lowline cattle, that insures a very good retail product
yield from the Lowline cross carcasses. This presents the opportunity for us to potentially see some Lowline genetics in
a majority of beef cow herds in America.
For the future growth of the breed it is imperative that
Lowline breeders are conducting business in an honest
manner and with the highest degree of integrity. The golden
rule needs to be the guiding principle for our code of ethics
as Lowline breeders.
When we represent animals as Lowlines we must get our
home work done and have them registered and parent verified to make sure that they are, in fact, what we say they are.
If we sell them as breeding stock we must guarantee them as
breeders and stand behind our bulls and heifers with an industry standard breeders’ guarantee. If you don’t know what
that is, here is a classic, time proven example:
breeders. Open females are guaranteed to be breeders. If a female appears to be a non-breeder within 6 months of the sale
(or within 6 months of when she reaches breeding age) she
may be returned to the seller at the buyer’s expense. The seller
will then reserve the right to prove the animal a breeder within a six month period, using any fullblood registered Lowline
bull of his choice through AI or natural service. If successful,
seller will return animal to buyer, again at buyer’s expense.
Should the animal fail to prove a breeder, the seller at his
option may either return the purchase price to the buyer or
replace the animal with another of equal value in full settlement and satisfaction of all claims. In no event shall the seller
be responsible for more than the purchase price.
In case the animal in question should develop to be a
problem breeder due to negligence or improper management
by the buyer or if the female has been subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques, the seller’s guarantee does not apply. No guarantee is given that bred females
will deliver a live calf. No guarantee is given that a female
will produce eggs suitable for transplant.
Breeding age bulls have passed a semen test at the time
they are sold and unless otherwise stated no guarantee is
given that a bull will produce freezable semen that will settle
cows when thawed. Bull calves that are sold as breeding animals are guaranteed to be breeders when they reach puberty,
approximately 14 - 16 months of age. A guaranteed breeder
means he will pass a semen test and settle a healthy cow of
breeding age.”
“Bred females in this transaction have been pregnancy
examined by a veterinarian and found to be safe in calf. Females in that are represented as pasture exposed have been
running with the bull but are not necessarily pregnancy examined or guaranteed pregnant but are guaranteed to be

These are good policies to adopt as breeders. We will begin to sell more and more cattle to existing cattlemen who
have had lots of experience buying and selling cattle. These
customers come with an expectation of how they will be
treated as a customer. Remember that your customer’s experience will have a lasting effect on how they talk about the
breed and how many people they will encourage to become
involved with Lowlines in the future.

Protein and the
Ruminal Factory
Dusty Abney, PhD

[email protected]
Previously I discussed the symbiotic relationship between a cow and
her ruminal microbe population. In
this installment I will cover the interaction between protein and forage digestibility by the microorganisms in the rumen.
Now that you understand that the
rumen microbes do the lion’s share
of the work with regard to the breakdown of forage in the cow’s digestive
tract, another important concept
to understand is why they do this.
Although their presence is highly
beneficial to the cow and they could
not live without her, the microbes
in the rumen exist for one purpose:
to make more copies of themselves.
The fermentation of forage and other feedstuffs are just a means to an
end. The energy, protein, and other
nutrients the cow utilizes from microbial fermentation are pure byproducts of the bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and other tiny organisms that
inhabit her rumen.
If the microbes need to produce
copies of themselves, what nutrients will they need to do so? To
know what materials we need to
build something, you have to understand what the final product will be.
If bacteria are analyzed for protein,
they usually contain 50-60% protein
on a dry matter basis. If over half of
the rumen bugs’ cells are composed
of protein, I will bet you can guess
8
m
what the rate limiting nutrient for
efficient digestion of forages is.
I often think of the rumen as a
factory: raw materials come in and
finished products come out. The raw
materials are grass, supplemental
feed, and water. The finished products are nutrients for the cow and,
subsequently, in beef and or milk.
If a factory assembly line is manufacturing trucks, all of the component parts have to be present at the
right time and in the right amounts
in order to produce the optimum
number of trucks a day. If, for whatever reason, the flow of parts to the
assembly line is interrupted or delayed, fewer new trucks will roll out
of the plant that day.
In our ruminal factory, the cow
brings in those raw materials detailed above in varying amounts
throughout the day. Having the
right amount of protein available
at the right time for the microbes to
ferment the forage she consumed is
called synchrony. When synchrony
is not achieved, the efficiency of the
ruminal fermentation is decreased.
Because the cow usually has an adequate amount of forage to consume,
the most common reason for a lack
of synchrony is a deficiency of protein.
Think back to our truck factory.
If we have all the parts needed to
manufacture a truck, but if we experience a delay in the delivery of
tires, the trucks will not roll off the
assembly line any faster than the
tires arrive. The net result of the delay in tire delivery is that the rate of
production is slowed.
Once more back in the rumen, a
very similar effect in the rate of passage of the forage through the rumen, and therefore the rest of the
digestive tract, can be seen when the
cow does not consume enough protein for the microbes to make more
microbes. Simply put, the better the
synchrony between protein and forage, the faster and more efficiently
the gastrointestinal tract will digest
and absorb the nutrients they provide.
If you provide a cow with low
quality hay and no supplemental
protein, you will slow her digestive
rate of passage to a crawl, and, as a
result, she will consume less hay. To
a lot of producers, that sounds like
a great idea, however, there is a major negative effect. Less hay moved
through the digestive process means
less nutrients to maintain the cow,
grow the fetus, or produce milk to
feed the calf. The cow will also derive fewer nutrients from the hay
than she would have if she had been
provided adequate protein supplementation. The results of these inefficiencies include cows that lose
body condition and large amounts
of undigested fiber in her manure.
That is why tall, very firm manure
pats are usually an indication of a
protein deficiency in the diet of the
cow and the bugs in her rumen.
By providing the right amount
of supplemental protein to the cow
along with her low quality hay, you
can increase both the rate and extent
of fermentation of the forage. That
will result in more energy, protein,
and other nutrients being absorbed
by the cow, less undigested forage
ending up in her feces, and, most
importantly, a more efficient and
productive cow. The increased rate
of passage seen in this scenario will
also result in the cow consuming
more of the forage, which results in
even more nutrients being absorbed
by her body.
Even when consuming very high
quality forage, such as wheat pasture
or alfalfa, a cow and her microbes
cannot digest all of the fiber. However, when you fail to provide an adequate amount of protein to her, you
dramatically increase the amount of
undigested fiber that ends up on the
ground behind her. After the last
couple of years of drought, I think
we all have a better understanding
of just how valuable and expensive
forage really is and how hard we
need to work to extract everything
we can from it.
Next time, I will cover how the
choices you make on how and when
you feed supplemental protein can
affect your cows’ productivity and
your bottom line.

drought
The summer of 2012 will go on record as the driest ever in many parts of the country. The corn
belt, which produces the vast majority of our
feed crops, has been affected from east to west
and north to south. Most of the mid-west and
western grasslands are also in very poor condition. Consequently, we have seen record feed
grain prices and climbing forage costs. The only
saving factor if you are in the cattle business is
that we now have a very good cattle market at the
present time.
As Lowline producers, we have an opportunity to
take advantage of this natural disaster by promoting what our cattle do best. The efficiency of our
cattle in turning grass to beef is a trait that most
commercial cattleman would like to improve in
their breeding programs. Cattle that were bred to
utilize $2 corn do not work economically when
corn is $8. Economics dictates that we must return to a forage based cattle business.
We have been pounding the pulpit for over 15
years regarding the necessity to reduce cow size
and input costs in our commercial herds. Slowly,
many have come to understand the logic in this
and more Lowline and Moderator bulls are being used in the industry. With sky high grain and
forage prices, more producers are accepting our
10
m
message and will be looking for Lowline genetics
in their future breeding programs.
As Lowline breeders, we must make a good first
impression with our customers by only keeping
the very best quality bulls to go into service. Ideally we should be selecting higher performing
bulls that will maintain moderate frame size at
maturity.
We have a unique product that is prime for the
times. Promote our unique traits in your advertising programs. Select the best genetics for your
breeding program. Provide the best bulls you
can to your customers and your business will be
successful.

Production Agriculture
by Robyn Goddard
I recently read an article by Charles Wheelan about “What They Don’t Tell You at Graduation” and it got me to thinking. Graduation, from High School or College, is a big mile post on the road of life. It’s an exciting and dynamic time
for young people. Many of the points brought up in this article can easily be applied to life and production agriculture.
Here are my thoughts on some of the wisdom Mr. Wheelan shared.
Life is all about connections! When
you go to college you meet so many
people; people who become friends,
business associates, and spouses. Don’t
forget about the bonds you make with
Professors, Grad Students and Coaches.
In Mr. Wheelan’s opinion there should
be a post graduation benchmark for
how many people you are still close to
after college graduation. I can attest
that the closest friends J and I have all
went to college with J. Over time we
have married and many have had children. We have expanded our “family”
and strengthened our bonds.
Life is a journey; not a race. There
are hard times ahead. It’s important
to remember, if what you are doing is
worth while there will be periods of uncertainty and failure. People in production agriculture face this everyday. We
can not control the weather, the markets
or our livestock. Many are dealing with
drought conditions, decreasing livestock
prices and scarce feed resources. Cows
abort, calves die and machinery breaks
down. We don’t always know why.
What we can do is care for the livestock, land and equipment to the best
of our ability and rely on our connections. By “cussing and discussing” we
can usually brainstorm a solution to the
problem or at least feel secure that we
are not the only ones. We can continue
to work hard and make the best possi-
26
m
ble business decisions for our situation.
The road most successful and interesting people travel is hardly ever a straight
path!
Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, says “What you do everyday matters more than what you do
once in a while.” The more I ruminate
on this idea, the more I like it. Raising
livestock is a 24/7 type of job, we know
that. Everyday is different and every
season is the same. The winter months
are spent caring for livestock and feeding calves. Next, we start calving. While
calving season is here we progress into
spring work; farming, fencing, branding calves and moving cattle to grass.
The summer months find many in the
hay field harvesting forages to feed our
livestock during the winter months.
Fall kicks off with cattle work, weaning
calves and catching up on the projects
that didn’t get done over the summer.
Somewhere between the seasons we try
to find the time to “get off the farm.” It’s
important to do those once in a while
things to keep our sanity!
Mr. Wheelan emphasizes “it’s all
borrowed time.” In 10, 20, 30 or more
years will I look back and be proud
of the life I have lived? Am I happy?
Within our everyday lives sits the uncertainty of “is this enough”? College
students and graduates are on top of the
world, they have energy, enthusiasm
and ideas! They have not experienced
the hard times for themselves. We all
aspire to be great. But being great is really out of our control. People who are
on solid ground, who have experienced
and survived hard times, who do the everyday things that matter are the ones
that achieve greatness. They do it with
out trying or thinking about it. They do
it by taking care of their family, by being stewards of the land and producing
quality foods and fibers to the best of
their ability. Theodore Roosevelt said “It
is hard to fail, but it is worse to never
have tried to succeed.”
Agriculture is a way of life. It takes a
strong and special person to weather the
uncertain storms we face. Many storms
caused by people who have no clue how
a farm or ranch works. People who need
to be fed and clothed and don’t always
know where their food and fiber comes
from. People who would be surprised by
the everyday items they need to survive
that are animal by-products.
With the people we meet and the
bonds we hold tight we will always have
someone to help us weather the storms
of life and insecurity. As we go through
our everyday chores, the seasons of our
work and the hard days may we remember, in the big picture, we are making
a difference. We are continuing a tradition. A way of life we were handed and
hope to pass on to the next generation.

At Muddy Creek Ranch, attention to detail is paramount
for David and Karen Shockey.
Muddy Creek Goes Full Circle
At Muddy Creek Ranch, attention to
detail is paramount for David and Karen
Shockey. They run Lowline cattle near
the town of Wilsall, Montana. The ranch
has been in the family for three generations now and started as a dream from
Karen’s dad, Bob Tomasko and his wife
Edie. Today, daughter Karen and husband David, along with their kids, Ashley, Mike, Connor, Jake and RaeAnn
lending a hand, they tend to the 200 plus
Lowline and Lowline influence cows on
the ranch.
Running cattle may be a bit of an understatement: they raise Lowline and
Lowline cross cattle yes, but they also sell
grass-fed beef to both restaurants and
directly to consumers and additionally,
serve Lowline grass-fed beef at their own
restaurant. This keeps the couple busy at
all times with that many irons in the fire.
We caught up with David and Karen
as they were returning from their trip to
Maine where they delivered cattle and
semen to numerous cattlemen along the
way. David states, “The trip is right at
3000 miles. We delivered cattle to New
York, Ohio and Maine. This is our third
year to deliver cattle out this direction.
We’ve delivered cattle and semen to
some people for all three of those years.
28
m
We even delivered some of our beef from
the ranch to the Portland Country Club in
Portland, Maine, for a wedding.”
They have ambitious goals as they
pursue the best genetics they can find to
build one of the top fullblood herds in the
nation. They will use that elite set of genetics to have a tremendous influence on
the 200 additional Lowline and Lowline
cross cows they run.
The Lowline grass-fed beef purchased
from the ranch has been well received
by their customers. They also market
to about five restaurants in the Bozeman area. These are upper end, white
tablecloth restaurants that command
a premium from their customers and
the customers expect the best from the
beef they get served. They are not disappointed. The Lowline grass-fed beef
is the perfect portion size for these restaurants. Muddy Creek is certified by the
Western Sustainability Exchange, WSE,
for the way in which the beef is raised.
The organization certifies the beef has
been raised without outside hormones
or antibiotics. The ranch implements low
stress livestock handling methods when
working the cattle. WSE also certifies the
cattle are produced in the region and that
the ranch follows sustainable stewardship
practices.
In addition to marketing to the restaurants, they also sell their beef through
an ad in the Bozeman paper and local
farmer’s markets. “A lot of times we will
make contact with someone at the farmer’s market and they will end up buying
a ½ or ¼ of beef after trying our meat,”
shares David. They have seen demand
for their beef as far away as a restaurant
in Washington, the country club in Maine
and a grass-fed beef supplier in Colorado
who purchased 4000 pounds of product
from them when he was having trouble
finding enough quality supply to fulfill a
contract for a school district. “The supplier was having trouble finding a supply of beef that was consistent enough to
keep his contract. Shipping beef across
state lines requires it to be USDA inspected not just state inspected and we
are lucky to be about 90 miles from the
only USDA inspected plant in Montana.”
David continues, “Our ranch is located in
between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. So, we get a really good traffic
of people through and many of them will
stop at our restaurant to eat on their way
through. Our beef is a feature item on the
menu and we get really good feedback
from our restaurant patrons that eat it.”
Fall 2012
Always trying to provide the best in
customer service and continuing to provide educational opportunities for their
customers, Muddy Creek is having a
Ranch Tour coming up where they have
invited chefs and beef customers out to
the ranch to see first-hand how the beef
they have been purchasing or are interested in purchasing is being raised. “We
see this as an opportunity to educate people on the benefits of the product we are
providing to the consumer,” adds David.
“We give tours to individuals all the time.
Some come to buy seedstock and some
come to buy beef. But this Ranch Tour
will have about 150 people invited out
for the day to get a good look at what we
do on the ranch and to learn about our
beef product.”
What makes their beef different from
all the rest? It’s the unique genetic pull
and high selection standards. They have
traveled far and wide to find the best
genetics for an all natural grass fed environment. The Angus based herd has
been selected from proven grass fed genetics from Montana and all across the
United States. “To top that off, we added
American Lowlines for their unique ability to produce high quality carcasses. Our
Lowlines produce a quality carcass at a
young age all on a forage based diet,”
David says proudly. “Because of our
outstanding genetic pull there is no need
for hormones, antibiotics, use of corn or
other grain based products. Also, with
the addition of Lowlines, the harvested
product has a more uniform size and
shape. The uniform size and shape is
desired by many consumers, chefs and
restaurants.”
David is a certified ultrasound technician and uses this technology in their selection and management decisions. There
will be an ultrasound demonstration as
part of the ranch tour to give everyone a
feel for the attention to detail they use in
their management of their cattle to provide the highest quality product for the
consumer.
Muddy Creek has exhibited some of
the top Lowline genetics in the country
at the National Western Stock Show in
Denver, Colorado, the Northern American International Livestock Exposition in
Louisville, Kentucky, the Northern International Livestock Expo in Billings, Montana, the American Royal in Kansas City,
Missouri, the Northwest Lowline Classic
in Spokane, Washington, the New York
State Fair, the Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo in Houston, Texas, and the
Inter Provincial Expo and the Farmfair
International in Canada. David is quick to
point out that they strive for consistency
and not just one outstanding individual in
their genetic pool. “We showed 36 head
in Denver and won Reserve Champion
Commercial Heifer Pen. We had several
pens of bulls as well. We want to show
the depth of quality in our program,” he
continues, “The cattle we raise need to
breed true and I get really excited about
having done this. We showed the Grand
Champion Bull at the National Western
Stock Show in 2010 – MCR Opinionated. Then that fall we showed a different bull in the fall at the North American International Livestock Exposition
in Louisville, Kentucky, that won Grand
Champion Bull. Then in 2012, it was an
Opinionated son awarded Reserve National Champion at the 2012 National
Western Stock Show. That is the kind of
breeding we strive for. Sometimes people
get the wrong idea when we show cattle.
We want to raise functional cattle that we
show, not just cattle that show. We really
have to have functional cattle to make it
on our ranch.”
It looks like they are well on their way
to having cattle that are functional for not
just the ranch, but for the entire circle
of production; from conception to consumer.

Regional Association News
Mountain States Lowline Association
Betty Deeney, President
Fall is show season in the Mountain States Region. We
just finished the 100th Wyoming State Fair in Douglas, Wy
and are looking forward to the Colorado State Fair in September and the NILE in Billings, MT October 18-20.
The NILE is our biggest show and we hope to continue
to see good numbers. There will be a Supreme Lowline
Class, Junior Showmanship and an award for the best display. Hope to see you all there.
MSLA is working toward having a show for small breeders at the 101th Wyoming State Fair, Lowlines, Dexters
and Miniature Herefords would show together. As long as
we can get 20 head we can do it. MSLA would also like to
have an educational field day in the spring of 2013, keep
watching the ALR web page for more information.
Hope to see you all at the NILE.
Eastern Lowline Association
Cindy Jackson, Secretary
It’s starting to feel like fall. Lowline Angus cattle are
buzzing all over the Eastern US and we’re proud to be
part of that. Smaller, more docile Lowlines and Lowline
composite cattle are perfect for 4-H’ers to bring to county
and state fairs! Numbers and winners are climbing. ELAA
helps sponsor and/or promote the New York State Fair and
The Big E of New England, where Lowlines are showcased.
Fryeburg Fair, in Maine, and the World Beef Expo, in Wisconsin, this September includes Lowlines. It’s not just the
show circuit. Lowline Angus cattle are showing merit in
every aspect of the beef industry! Ladies and gentlemen,
Lowline Angus cattle are the Cinderella story of the cattle
business! Excitement is in the air!
It’s time to get serious about preparing for The 2012
World Lowline Angus Show and Sale at the NAILE. Get
your entries in on time, get your cattle ready, get your
name on a committee to help, and get this show on the
road! When you send in your entry forms, add a note and
tell us when and where you can volunteer. Entry forms are
available on the ELAA website. www.easternlowline.com
The ALR has recognized this show and sale as a premier
breed event at one of the country’s finest facilities. We are
going to continue to live up to that and continue to make it
even better! Our Junior Show will be first, at 8 am and will
be limited to two head per junior and designated “blow
and go” where fitting will not be counted. We’ve added
30
m
a new division to the show for Purebred Lowlines, giving
them recognition separately from Fullbloods and Percentage cattle. Purebreds will be pulled out of Percentage
classes, similar to “bred and owned,” for those of you who
are familiar with that procedure. In coming years, we’ll
have additional time allotted for the Purebreds to show
in their own division. We made this decision to recognize
those breeders who were unable to join at the fullblood
level and have taken the time and patience to breed up to
purebred cattle. And breed up we have done--all across
the country--we have bred some great purebred Lowlines!
We’re delighted to have John Reed manage the sale offering again for us. In line with the national sale, we are requiring all sale cattle to have DNA completed before the
sale, and that includes percentage cattle. As a reminder,
all sale cattle are also required to be entered in the show
and must appear on show day. There are still some vacancies for those who want to sponsor champion and division awards, with your farm name printed in the program.
When you get your exhibitor package, please read the
instructions letter carefully. We don’t want any surprises.
Be prepared to buy your parking and entry passes when
you get to the gate. We want to get some committees up
and running, like grass fed beef marketing and others. So
please try to attend, even if you don’t show cattle. For updates and other details, please watch the ELAA news blasts
coming via email. Room information and schedule activities will be reported on the website and in news blasts.
We invite all Juniors to participate in the essay contest
for the annual $500 Jackson Memorial Junior Scholarship
Award. Watch our ELAA blasts for more details. We were
happy to have had a good number of participants last
year. We hope to see this program grow in time as well
with more dollars for more recipients. If you would like
to donate to the fund, you can send a check to ELAA and
note in the memo that it is for the scholarship fund. We
are so proud of our Juniors, and we want to help them in
every way possible! These funds are kept separate from
ELAA operating funds.
If anyone wants the ELAA news and doesn’t have access to email, please let me know. Send regular mail correspondence to me: Cindy Jackson, 3621 Meadowview Dr,
Lafayette, IN 47909. We are also gearing up to accept Pay
Pal for classified ads, dues, and sponsorships on the website. Send your questions, ideas, comments, and kudos to
[email protected] We do our best to see that you
benefit from your membership.

Dear ALR Members,
Seems as if the summer has flown by!! Although my
truck may have another 20,000 miles on it, I have had
the honor to meet many new friends and breeders
from every corner of the country.
The Junior National Show in Stillwater, OK was a
hit, as we had our largest attendance to date. We welcomed two new board members, Courteney Walker
from New Mexico and Amy Emberson from Oklahoma. Bridgett Hoffmann from Wisconsin was also reelected for another term.
Our junior shows are growing rapidly across the nation!! We had over 40 juniors participate in the Iowa
State Fair Junior Show in August, and for the first time
ever we will be holding a junior show at the American Royal this October. We have had a tremendous
outpouring of support and sponsorships from our
regional breeders and associations at these shows.
Whether you won an award, participated, or just enjoyed watching a show, please make sure to thank
these folks for all they do for the juniors and the breed.
The junior board has decided to expand our responsibilities and add some new programs, so be sure
to watch the ALR webpage for updates. We will be
holding a heifer raffle again this fall, so don’t miss your
chance on a ticket as a limited number will be sold
on the website. Best of wishes and have a safe harvest
season.
Hope to see you all soon,

Maddy Taplin, part of the Eastgate
Lowline company lives in Dayton,
Texas with her parents, Henry and
Shauna, and brothers, Chase and
Rowdy. She is 13 years old and in
the 8th grade. She has been showing Lowlines for three years. Maddy
got her first run in the show ring
at the Dayton Livestock Show and
Rodeo. That’s when she knew she
was hooked. She fell in love with
them because they are short, cute,
easy to handle, and unique in their
own way. Maddy has shown at the
American Royal, National Western
Livestock Show, Houston Livestock

Show, Fall Classic, Southeast Texas
State Fair, and Belt Buckle Bonanza. Her show career has consisted
of being Reserve Grand Champion
Heifer at the Southeast Texas State
Fair in 2010, Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Female at Houston
Livestock Show in 2010, and Grand
and Reserve Champion at the Belt
Buckle Bonanza in 2012.
Before showing cattle, Maddy
showed pigs for three years. She
was very triumphant in that project
too, placing in the top ten everywhere she went. Her most memorable win with her Lowlines was at
the Houston Livestock Show and
Rodeo, where she beat a Shorthorn Cross in the Junior AOB division in 2010. All eyes were on the
class when they stopped the other
show ring to finish the class that
took over 30 minutes. Maddy’s win
with Lil’ Mo will not be forgotten.
Maddy and her new favorite heifer,
Macy, were called the dynamic duo.
Maddy wants to thank Charlie Waldroff from Rocking B Farms for in-
troducing her to Macy.
Maddy is not just successful
in the show ring, but outside too.
Showing has taught her responsibility, dedication, teamwork, and
sportsmanship; lessons that she
puts to use in her everyday life. She
is the secretary for the Junior Southwest Lowline Angus Breeders Association. Maddy is an Honors Student who takes all AP classes. She is
also a member of Eastgate 4-H and
Liberty County 4-H Council. She
spends her spare time showing and
working her show cattle and spending time with her family.
What is your favorite thing about
showing cattle? “Umm… Fitting
them.”
What is your next goal with cattle? “I want to increase the numbers
in my Lowline Herd and be a part
of the American Lowline Junior Association Board. I also want to get
more kids involved in the Lowline
breed.”

Laramie Coffey lives in Stillwater, OK with her parents Wade and
Cheryl Coffey and her brothers Tyler and Wyatt. Laramie is 10 years
old and in the 5th grade. Although
Laramie has been showing cattle for
3 years, this is her 1st year showing
Lowlines. Her first Lowline show
was at this year’s Jr. National where
she showed her heifer 7C Miracle
3X and won Grand Champion Full
Blood Heifer.
Laramie has always showed
club calves that she and her family
have raised. In 2011 she won Grand
Champion
Heifer
and Reserve Grand
Champion Steer at
her local show and
then went on to have
Breed
Champion
Commercial heifer at
the Payne County Jr
livestock show. She
really enjoyed showing at the Jr. National
show this summer
and meeting great new friends and
hopes to get to show at more Lowline shows this upcoming year. She
is also involved in livestock, horticulture and crops judging and
Lamb Lead but when she is not at
the barn or attending a 4H function
she likes to play soccer, take dance
lessons, decorate cakes and read.
She does all of this while maintaining straight A’s on her report cards.
This year her Lowline show
string will consist of a Full blood
heifer, a half-blood heifer and a fullblood steer. She will also be show-
Fall 2012
ing a Simmental Steer, Shorthorn
Steer and a Hereford Heifer at 4H
and Oklahoma Club Calf Association shows. She plans on building
her own percentage Lowline herd
by breeding her 4H show heifers to
Lowlines. Her half-blood heifer for
this next year is a daughter of her
first show heifer Snowflake.
Laramie has big plans for her future in the Jr Lowline Association. “
I would like to someday be on the
Jr Lowline Board, and if they have a
princess or queen contest I want to
do that too! I would also like to go
to as many lowline shows all over
the country as I can.” said Laramie.
Laramie has a bright future
ahead over her and she believes
that hard work and dedication will
help her achieve her dreams. She
plans on attending Oklahoma State
University and wants to cheer on
the Pom Squad while she’s there.
