Be a Part of Herndon History
This is your opportunity to leave your mark
on Herndon High School. The Hundred
Year Highway campaign is “under construction”. While the construction hasn’t actually
started, the initial phase has begun. The Hundred Year Highway will be constructed as a
permanent walkway along the home bleachers
and will be made of laser engraved brick
pavers. Bricks of various sizes are available
and range in price from $100 to $1000. It’s a
perfect gift for a Hornet alumni or graduate,
you could even promote your hometown
Herndon business or organization. Please
consider leaving your mark on Herndon High
School. See the enclosed flyer or visit the
HHS Athletic website –
www.herndonathletics.org.
Proceeds from the “Highway” will go towards
the Capital Improvement fund to help pay for
maintenance on the new turf fields. Now the
Sports Boosters are offering an extra incentive. Purchase a brick, and a portion of the
sales will be returned to your club of choice.
Now not only is this a great keepsake for you,
but a great fundraising opportunity for your
team or club. Just indicate on your order
form what club you would like to give the
credit to.

Help Wanted!
Sports Boosters need your help! Many members of the current
Booster Board will soon be “retiring” as their kids will be
graduating next year. Most of these volunteers have no one
learning the ropes, which will leave the Sports Boosters in an
unfortunate situation. No job is too difficult and most can be
adjusted to meet your availability. Please consider getting involved now—the future of Hornet sports is counting on you!
Immediate help is needed with the following committees and
positions:
VICE PRESIDENT—Mainly responsible for coordinating
Fall, Winter and Spring Sports Programs with HHS staff representative as well as Sponsorship solicitation. Contact Pete
Sullivan at [email protected] or 703-437-5563 if you can
help with this.
GOLF TOURNAMENT COORDINATOR—Volunteers
are needed NOW to coordinate this years event. Contact
Pete Sullivan at [email protected] or 703-437-5563 if
you can help with this.
WEBMASTER - Our current webmaster does a fantastic job,
but hasn't had a child at HHS for a while. We would love a
current HHS parent to take on the role of managing our website. Contact Pete Sullivan at [email protected] or 703437-5563 if you can help with this.
BANQUETS—A Banquet Coordinator is needed to assist
and shadow Mary Mann (retiring in 2012) in coordinating the
Fall, Winter and Spring Banquets. Involves coordinating food,
drinks, desserts, ticket sales as well as set-up and clean-up.
Committee members are also needed to help with banquets.
Contact Mary Mann at 703-478-0004 or [email protected] if you can help.
CLOTHING SALES—A volunteer is needed to assist/
shadow our current chairperson as she will be retiring in 2012.
Duties include designing & ordering sale merchandise, maintaining inventory, and scheduling & working sale dates. Volunteers are also needed to help sell. Contact Margie Smith
([email protected] or 703-471-0907) if you can help.
COMMUNICATIONS—A volunteer is needed to assume
this role. Includes creating newsletter (3 times/yr), sending
email updates, and maintaining Booster section of
www.herndonathletics.org. Contact Leslie Petty
([email protected]/703-450-4372) if you can help.

MEMBERSHIPS—
Price Reduced!!
It is never too late to support our HHS athletes—
become a Sports Booster member now! The Membership prices have been reduced for the Spring
season. Now you can become a Super Hornet for
just $125.00 (reduced from $250 and includes 4
unlimited passes to all home games). The Hornet
membership has been reduced to just $75 (from
$150 and includes 6 regular
season home game
tickets). The Stinger membership remains at $60
and includes 4 regular season home game tickets.
Visit www.herndonathletics.org and click on the
Boosters tab for more information on Booster
membership or to download a membership form.
MEMBERSHIP—Though it has been fun working
with the Sports Boosters Board and together as a team,
the time has gone by fast and our current Chairpersons
Lesley & Beth will be senior parents in 2011-2012, retiring at the end of the year. Two people are needed to
assist/shadow them as Membership Chairs. Rising
sophomore parents with student athletes would be
ideal, but anyone enthusiastic and with a desire to support our sports program will be a good fit!
We'll have one, fun organizational meeting a year and
then we're off to these action items--we need committee
volunteers to help:
Promote new memberships by attending school
events, coaches meetings and parent meetings.
Help verify membership passes at games.
Help with parking allocation at home football
games.
Contact Lesley Aschenbach (703-787-9158 or [email protected]) or Beth Bednarek (703-709-9641
or [email protected]) if you can help.
PARENT LIAISONS—In an effort to improve communications between the HHS sports teams, the Sports
Boosters, and the HHS families, the Sports Boosters are
encouraging each coach to appoint a Parent Liaison.
This person will act as a liaison between the coach, the
Sports Booster, and the families of the athletes on the
team. Duties of the Liaison could include writing articles for local papers, helping to coordinate spirit packs,
selling banquet tickets, and more. If your team does not
have a Parent Liaison and you are interested in this role,
please speak with your coach or contact the boosters at
[email protected].

Football News…
Football conditioning for 2011 season has started. Varsity and JV condition on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30,
and Freshman condition on Mondays at 5:30-7:00. Information about the upcoming season will be posted on
the football website under team files or email coach Sheaffer [email protected].
Dance Team
There will be an interest meeting for anyone interested in learning about the dance team and the auditions. Necessary
paperwork will be handed out at the meeting. All rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible. The
date of the meeting is April 27th in the HHS Lecture Hall at 3:30pm. Dance team tryouts for the 2011-2012 season
are scheduled for May 23, 24, 25 and 26th in the HHS cafeteria from 3:00 to 5:30pm.
Girls Tennis News…
The girls Tennis Team kicks off the new season with a new coach. Welcome to Cynthia Furrer! We are off to a great
start, with over 30 girls trying out for the team. The final team is made up of 12, with the top two spots on the team
being held by new freshman this year. Team Captains are returning Juniors Lea Maamari and Denise Lee. We won
our scrimmage against South Lakes and are looking forward to a great season!
Soccer News…
The boy’s varsity soccer team kicks off the 2011 season with arch rival South Lakes on March 18. The hornets are
looking for a strong showing this season behind Peter Sullivan, Patrick McLaughlin, Raleigh McKenzie, EK Korvah and Chris Czerwinski. The boys are very excited to play on the new turf field provided by HHS administration,
Boosters, HYS, Herndon Optimist and HHS Athletic Director Mike Mahoney. For many years HHS soccer teams
have been hampered with the field’s crown, bumpy surface and channels, but the new turf field ranks HHS with one of
the best playing surfaces in the state. The new surface will allow the players to display their foot skills, their moves, and
their first touch allowing the ball to be played more on the ground. With the 2011 team lacking significant size the hornets will rely on their quick feet, ball movement and ability to combine with their teammates to search for Coach Lanigan’s 5th Concorde District Title in his 8th season as the head coach.
Wrestling News...
The wrestling team was rebuilding
this year. The JV team was one of
the most dominant squads in the
region. The varsity team was
young, but will be more competitive in the next two years, as they
are only graduating one senior
from the starting line-up.
Results from this year were:
JV Districts
Chris Gaffney 1st at 112lbs
Dante Walker 2nd at 112lbs.
John Shull 1st at 135lbs.
William Mejia 1st at 140lbs.
Khaled Moustafa 2nd at 189lbs.
Edgar Ortiz 3rd at 189lbs.
Jadon Koenig 3rd at 215lbs.
Jadon Koenig 5th at 215lbs.
Varsity Districts
Jared Nielsen 4th at 103lbs.
Gabe Pike 4th at 112lbs.
Ramon Reyes 3rd at 119lbs.
Freshmen States
Bassam Estwani 4th at 135lbs.
The wrestling team is already preparing for next season. Any freshmen or sophomore who didn’t
wrestle, but is interested in joining
next year, is invited to workout out
the team. Below is the schedule:
Mon/Wed/Fri 2:45-4:15 weight
lifting in the weight room
Mon 7-8:30 Mat Club at Chantilly HS
Wed 7-8:30 Mat Club at Herndon HS
JV Regionals

Swim and Dive News…
The young Swim and Dive team had some growing pains this year after losing 20 seniors last year, many who were State swimmers. The team took the challenge head on
though and made some great improvements. Leading the team in excitement this year
were the girls relays, including Robin Brazier, Molly Cudahy, Jenna VanCamp and
Ryan Murphy. The girls swam well collectively in their relays, making it to States in
the 200 medley relay, but also individually –with Robin Brazier making it to Regions
(200 IM; 100 Back) and Jenna VanCamp (100 Breast) and Ryan Murphy (100 Back)
making it to States. Additional Region qualifiers included Ryan Murphy in the 100 Fly
and Elizabeth McNulty in the 100 yd Breaststroke, Nikki Russell, Sarah Anderson,
Molly Cudahy, Jenna Van Camp in the Girls 200 free relay, and Molly Cudahy, Jenna Van Camp, Ryan Murphy, Robin Brazier
in the Girls 400 free relay. Jenna VanCamp also received recognition as a 1st Team All District Swimmer and a 2nd Team All
Region Swimmer.
On the boys side, Conor Cudahy, Jonathan Nguyen and Ryan Williams lead the team, both making it to Regions (Ryan in
the 200 and 100 yd Free, Jonathan in the 200 Free, Conor in the 200 Free and 500 Free) and Conor making it to States in the
500 Yd Free. Additional Swimmers qualifying for Regions included Brett Petty, Ryan Williams, Conor Cudahy, Jonathan
Nguyen in the Boys 200 free relay, Brett Petty, Ryan Williams, Conor Cudahy, Jonathan Nguyen in the Boys 400 free relay, and
Nathan Good, Richard Fronczak, Chris Fronczak, Brett Petty in the Boys 200 med relay. Diver Adam Trapp qualified for
Regions, finishing 15th overall. Adam also received recognition as a 2nd Team All District Diver. While the Swim and Dive
team does not have a formal off-season conditioning program, ALL swimmers and divers are encouraged to train year-round.
The best way to do that is in the water, practicing at least several times per week.
Girls Basketball News…
Herndon’s Varsity Girls Basketball team ended their 2010-11 season in the first round of Districts with a loss against Westfield. The
young squad fought hard all season and never gave up even though they experienced more losses than wins. The team’s overall record for the season was 4-16, and within conference play they were 2-9. Season highlights for the team included a thrilling five point
victory against Chantilly in their first meeting of the season, and an exciting three point victory against Robinson on Senior Night.
The team bid farewell to five seniors on Senior Night and they included: Shaquilla Ferguson, Brianna Lowry, Rachel Liebenstein, Amira Juma, and Ariana Tolbert. All of the seniors played basketball at Herndon for three or four years. Returning players
for next season will include four rising seniors (Jenna Aschenbach, Sarah Brasington, Deborah Headen and Brandi Delago), and three
rising juniors (Mayumi Shill, Brianna Moses, and Alexis Brown).
Many individual honors were received by players on the team this season. Three varsity team members received Concorde All District
Team honors for the year. Deborah Headen made 2nd Team All District, Brianna Lowry received Honorable Mention, and Jenna
Aschenbach made 2nd Team All-Defensive. During Herndon’s Winter Sports Banquet members of the team also received awards for
their efforts and dedication. The Most Improved and MVP Award went to Deborah Headen who scored a total of 316 points for
the season. The Sportsmanship Award went to Amira Juma for her supportive attitude and team spirit. Athletic Honor Roll Awards
were received by ArianaTolbert, Jenna Aschenbach, Alexis Brown, Brianna Moses, Brianna Lowry, and Rachel Liebenstein for having
GPAs of 3.5 or above. Several players received Varsity Letter Awards for playing on the varsity squad for the first time, and they included: Amira Juma, Sarah Brasington, Mayumi Shill, Brianna Moses, and Alexis Brown.
Coach Barnes and his staff are planning post-season activities for the team to get them prepared for next season. The team will be
attending TEAM CAMP at VCU on July 31-August 2. The cost is $275 per player and online registration is available. Incoming
Freshman and returning Freshman/JV players will participate in a SUMMER LEAGUE slated to begin after spring sports are completed. Coach Barnes will contact players and parents with more information once plans are finalized. BOOT CAMP BASKETBALL, which is a pre-season conditioning and weight training for returning HHS varsity players will be held June 27th – July 1st. The
training will take place at HHS from 7:30 am – 8:15am. The annual HERNDON GIRL’S BASKETBALL CAMP will be take place
on June 27-July 12. The camp is open to girls in grades 4 through rising 9th graders. The camp will be held at Herndon United Methodist Church right across from HHS from 9:00am-2:00pm. The cost is $100 per camper
if registered by March15, $110 per camper after March 15th, and the cost for more than
one camper from the same family is only $80. Please contact Coach Barnes for more
details.
The team and coaches would like to thank everyone for their support this past season. A
special thanks goes out to our five graduating seniors and their families. We wish you
great success in your future pursuits. In the Senior Night program Coach Barnes congratulated the seniors and players by recognizing that, “Success is normally measured by
wins and losses; however, this group never quit regardless of the score or the situation.”
