Volume 16 No. 2 Cowichan Secondary School October 11, 2016 THUNDER NEWS PRINCIPALS' MESSAGE We have a lot going on at both campuses. In addition to all of the teaching and learning going on in classes, here are some highlights of recent and ongoing events and activities: absent from class. With our new MyEd information system, this has been a bit “glitchy”. Teachers monitor attendance daily. Counsellors and administrators checkup on chronic non-attendees weekly. NEW "X" BLOCK • • • • • • • Extra-curricular teams right now include rugby, volleyball, basketball, swimming, cross-country, field hockey, rock climbing and ice hockey Performing Arts Centre at the Quamichan Campus including Theatre/Drama, Dance, Concert Band and Guitar Math 9 and PE 9 at the Cowichan Campus Student Leadership and Grad Council on the go We have students from each campus walking across to the other campus for some of these specialty options Please remind students to use the sidewalks, crosswalks and lights to make the walk as safe as possible Public Health Nurse - available for appointments at the Cowichan Campus. Contact the Career Centre We're looking forward to a peaceful, positive school year! Charlie Coleman, Principal Dual Campus, Cowichan Secondary Nicole Boucher, Principal, Quamichan Campus PARENT-TEACHER COMMUNICATION: Please remember that you do not have to wait for ParentTeacher Interviews to ask about your child's progress. If you have questions or concerns please email the teachers directly, or phone for an appointment. A staff email list is included in this newsletter and is also on our web site. Watch for more details coming from the school district regarding this. PLEASE CHECK OUR WEB SITE (css.sd79.bc.ca) or Follow us on Facebook and Twitter ATTENDANCE Attendance is a critical factor in success at school. Students who do well at school almost always have good attendance. Students who struggle at school, or fail, often have poor attendance. Please encourage your son or daughter to attend classes regularly. To help with this, we have an "auto-dial" system that will send a phone message home whenever your child is late or We are doing our "X" block a little differently this year. Every Monday, we will have an "extended block" st nd between 1 and 2 period. Students still get all 4 blocks each day, they are just a little shorter on Mondays to allow for the "X block" time. At the Quamichan Campus, the Grade 8 students will use this time for ADVISORY activities. The Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 students will use this as a "FLEX BLOCK". This is not free time. All teachers will be available to all students. It will be a time where students can get extra help, catch-up, or get ahead. There will also be an opportunity for students to earn extra credits by doing their own independent or group "passion projects". More details to come! PHOTO RE-TAKES All students must have their photo taken for use in school records, the Yearbook and Student Cards. There is no charge for this photo service. However, a colour package may be purchased by filling out the Lifetouch order form available in the office and paying the set fee directly to the photographer. PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL We have one CSS PAC for the Dual Campus. The first meeting of the year was Wednesday Sept 14th, we had a great turn out at the CSS Quam Campus Library!! Our next meeting & AGM, when we will elect a new PAC th Executive, is Wednesday, Oct. 12 , 7:00 p.m. in the library at the Cowichan Campus (James Street). All parents of Cowichan Secondary School students (Grade 8-12) are automatically members of the Parent Advisory Council and are encouraged to attend. Positions for election: · Chair: · Vice-Chair: · Treasurer: · Secretary: CSS PAC is always looking for new regulars to come out to the meetings. CSS PAC meets once a month, usually on the second Wednesday of each month. This is not like an Elementary PAC, as we do not do big fundraisers, hot lunches, etc. We allocate gaming/general funds by request, guided by our budget to the student body & school community. Please consider joining our next PAC Meeting. Next meeting th will be Oct.12 . CSS PAC Email is [email protected] CSS PAC Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mtppac/ (or Search for “Cowichan Secondary School – PAC”) CSS PAC Page : http://css.sd79.bc.ca/index.php/parentadvisory-council Again, Cowichan Secondary School PAC is NOT a fundraising PAC. Primarily we are here to help distribute funds allotted to the school, and help facilitate and enhance student opportunities, school needs and activities, in a fair & democratic but simple way. These meetings also help us know just what is going on at school.... because our kids no longer tell us! which means...This is a group to share events, news, ideas and school docs, ask stuff, etc… We help support gaming applications by fundraising groups at the school, learn from presenters at times about opportunities for travel and learning for the students, start committees where there is a need and put the word out for volunteer opportunities within the school community. Hope to see you there! GRAD COUNCIL Grad Council 2017 is: President: Laura Snelling Vice President: Darlene Gitaari Secretary: Mackenzie English Treasurer: Cara Baudin Decorator: Eve Truhn & Syan Johnson Communicator: Ashton Aumen & Jenna Howard We will keep you informed of all our upcoming events though the newsletter & on our Facebook page! FIREWORKS With Halloween only a couple weeks away, there will be a strong temptation for some students to acquire fireworks. Students and parents are reminded that the Municipality of North Cowichan enforces a bylaw which bans selling, possessing and using fireworks and firecrackers in the Municipality. Similar bans are in effect in the City of Duncan, CVRD and Cowichan Tribes. It is very important to note that serious injuries have occurred to students in the past as a direct result of the careless use of fireworks by other students. Consequently, there will be zero tolerance for fireworks at school. Due to potential for injuries, students are advised that bringing fireworks to school is strictly prohibited. Reminder: School Administration has the right to check student lockers and backpacks. Any student who is caught in possession of fireworks or setting off fireworks either on school property or in the immediate vicinity of the school will be suspended. CODE OF CONDUCT HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT REMINDERS FROM OUR CODE OF CONDUCT The Cowichan Secondary Code of Conduct can be summed up in one word: RESPECT. If we all (students, staff and parents) demonstrate RESPECT at all times, this will be a safe place to learn. Highlights from the Student Handbook: • USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES…Unless the teacher has given specific permission, the use of personal electronic devices (cell phones, smart phones, CD players, MP3’s, iPods, iPhone cameras, electronic games, etc.) are strictly forbidden during class time. Please ensure that these items are safely stored in your locker. Do not leave electronic devices on your desk or in a backpack or bag in the classroom or PE changeroom. The school cannot be responsible for lost, broken or stolen property. • CELL PHONES…The School District 79 Policy 5112 clearly outlines the expectations for cell phone use in schools. This includes any mobile communication device. In order to maintain a positive and uninterrupted learning environment, cell phones must be turned off at all times in every classroom, shop, lab, gymnasium or other instructional space during regular class time. Many of the teachers now allow the use of cell phones and other smart gadgets in the classroom. The use of these devices is always up to the teacher’s permission. • ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUGS…Students who possess, consume or who are under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while they are under the jurisdiction of the school may be suspended immediately in accordance with School District Policy. A parent and/or RCMP will be notified. • SEARCH AND SEIZURE. The Principal and VicePrincipals have the legal right to search your person or property if they have reason to believe you may be in possession of any illegal substance or property. The administrators may search your clothes, backpacks, bags, locker or vehicle. Any illegal items found will be confiscated. Parents and/or the RCMP may be contacted. Consequences may include suspension. This has been endorsed by parents on our PAC, and upheld by the Supreme Court. • FIGHTING, BULLYING, INTIMIDATION…All students have a right to attend school, free of the threat of physical abuse. Those students involved in fights or intimidation or inciting others to fight while they are under the jurisdiction of the school may be suspended. Their parents or guardians will be notified. Students who threaten, intimidate, discriminate or bully others will be held accountable for their behaviour. This includes intimidation of any kind – physical, verbal, or electronic. Consequences may be include suspension from school. • TOBACCO British Columbia Law requires strict enforcement of a tobacco-free policy anywhere on school property. Violators may be subject to heavy fines and imprisonment. In the interest of the health of all students, smoking and chewing tobacco are not permitted on the school property. This includes a ban on “e-cigarettes”. A violation of this rule may result in suspension from school. Have you registered for the 2016-17 Bus Pass?
