JESUIT RETREAT HOUSE 5629 STATE ROAD ● PARMA, OHIO 44134-2292 ● (440) 884-9300 ● FAX (440) 885-1055 Web: jrh-cleveland.org ● E-mail: [email protected] September 2015 Love consists in sharing what one has and what one is with those one loves. A Place of Peace. Igniting Hearts. Board of Directors - St. Ignatius of Loyola Rita Carfagna Chair John V. Biernacki Dear Friend of Jesuit Retreat House, Hugh Buchanan Elizabeth Cotter Martin Connell, S.J. Frank DeSantis Tina M. Facca, PhD Michael Ferkovic, CPA Kathleen Ferry Hon. Laura Gallagher Michael Gladstone Rita Mary Harwood, SND William Koeblitz I send this letter with the hope that your summer has been blessed with many restful and renewing moments in seeing and celebrating God’s gifts of family and friends, of life and creation. As we begin the journey into the more busy time that often follows the summer, it is important to remember what matters most. St. Ignatius reminds us that our response to God’s unconditional love for us is reflected in the love we share - what one has and what one is with those one loves. In a world that clamors for more busyness, more work, more results and more production, we can sometimes lose sight of what matters. What is important is how well we love. Jesus came to show us the way, the truth and the life in how we bring God’s love more deeply into each life we touch. If we are faithful to Jesus’ way, we may not always see the results or success of our efforts. But the legacy of our love will live on more than we might ever imagine. Helping people on their life journey to build and profess a legacy of love is foundational to our JRH ministry. Paul V. Murphy Donald Petkash, SJ Robert Welsh, SJ Rick Krivanka Executive Director Barbara Leggott Associate Director Our Mission: Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, rooted in the spirituality of St. Ignatius, Jesuit Retreat House provides a sacred setting for outreach, retreats and programs of growth and development for people in the contemporary Church and society. We have been blessed with increasing numbers of people who attend our retreats and programs – a spectrum of people from those who have come for many years to the presence at almost every event of people who are first-timers. Throughout my first full year, I have heard countless comments of enthusiasm and appreciation about the beauty and peacefulness of our place, and the relevance and inspiration of Ignatian spirituality in people’s lives. Please consider the retreats and programs we offer to help you “to find God in all things.” Our programs this fall include a new 3-part series on life-changing moments, Pope Francis encyclical on the environment, dealing with the overwhelming busyness of life, a new retreat for young adults, and deeper reflections on Gospel stories and Ignatian spirituality. Invite your family and friends to join you. And know that we welcome your ideas for future retreat offerings. God be with you, Richard S. Krivanka, Executive Director September Programs September 15 Movie & Conversation about Pope Francis - The Francis Effect 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Cost: $10 This evening will feature a movie, The Francis Effect, produced by the Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation based in Toronto, Canada. It takes an in-depth look at how the Church is changing under the leadership and vision of Pope Francis. Opportunities will be provided for the further sharing of insights and reflections by those who participate. Popcorn and refreshments included! September 15 Experiencing Jesus in Scripture/ Encountering Christ in our Lives 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Presented by Janet Lehane Cost: $35 Saint Ignatius of Loyola referred to himself as a pilgrim in sharing his story. Our journey forward is one of learning to love as God loves. Time will be given to prayer, input, lunch, periods of contemplative silence, and sharing. Janet Lehane is a spiritual director and retreat leader with a deep love of Ignatian Spirituality. She is certified through John Carroll’s Ignatian Spirituality Institute. The day begins with coffee & pastry and includes lunch & Mass. September 16 The Basics of Jesuit Spirituality: An Evening of Prayer 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Presented by Fr. Matt Roche, S.J. There are some Ignatian Prayer forms that St. Ignatius taught and recommended to others that form a structure for our spiritual path. No special background necessary. Come to learn and share insights about his new encyclical, “Laudato Si”, with its invitation to shift our thinking and daily choices given the reality of global climate change. Sister Barbara O’Donnell is a staff member with Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center at Villa Maria, PA. Focusing on Eco-Spirituality and Eco-Justice, she offers workshops, retreats and rituals integrating theology, spirituality, Catholic Social Teaching, a cosmic worldview, and reflections about the meaning of humility in today’s society. Includes coffee/pastry & lunch As Stephen Ministers, we walk with people through some of the hardest times of their lives. Our calling and commitment is to share Christ’s love with others but, as Jesus did, we sometimes need to spend time away from ministry in prayer and contemplation. Please bring writing materials. Sue is a spiritual director, retreat leader and Stephen Minister. She is certified through John Carroll’s Ignatian Spirituality Institute. Coffee/pastry and lunch. October Programs October 19 Mary: Mother, Disciple, Sister & Friend 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Presented by Sr. Mary Ann Baran, SND Cost: $20 Come and spend a few hours with Mary, reflecting on her life, humanity, and role in our lives. As we deepen our friendship with Mary, she gladly leads us, more and more, to her Son, Jesus. Sr. Mary Ann Baran, a Sister of Notre Dame, is a spiritual director and a certified lay ecclesial minister in the Diocese of Cleveland. On the staff of Collinwood Neighborhood Catholic Ministries, Sr. Mary Ann ministers to the elderly and poor in addition to her retreat and spiritual direction ministries. Refreshments. October 26 Life Changer: A Doctor’s Encounter with Mother Teresa 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Presented by Dr. Paul Wright Cost: $20 Dr. Paul Wright, a prominent cardiologist and University of Notre Dame graduate, was seeking a deeper sense and purpose for his life at the beginning of his medical career. He was spiritually transformed after meeting Mother Teresa of Calcutta. After visiting her, he focused on what she told him, "You're touching Christ within humanity." Dr. Wright will be sharing how his meeting with Mother Teresa transformed his medical practice and his "living out of his faith identity." Light refreshments will be served. October 27 Becoming Like A Child 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Presented by Laura Kuhn Cost: $35 Jesus said, “Unless you change and become as little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) In this retreat, we consider how the unselfconscious child interacts with nature, relationships and events. As we reflect and discuss specially chosen children’s books and recall our own childhood experiences, we will celebrate the curiosity, creativity, vulnerability and trust of little children. How do these qualities bring us to the Kingdom? Catechists, parents, grandparents, relatives and indeed anyone may find in this retreat an exposure to enjoyable and beautiful stories that open our hearts, make us laugh and remind us of our dependence as we draw closer in love for ourselves, others and God. Coffee/pastry and lunch. October 30 & 31 Ignatian Currents: Kidnapped by Busyness? An Ignatian Remedy Cultural “Busyness” and the Ignatian “Two Standards” Presented by Dr. Laurie Cassidy Friday, October 30 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. With What Standard Do I Measure My Life This evening’s program will examine what Ignatius intended in this challenging prayer on accepting the standard of Christ amidst our, at times, overwhelming everyday life. Saturday, October 31 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The Kingdom is Here and Now We will explore how American culture reduces Christian life into a “spiritual way” in order to be more efficient, accomplished and “busy about many things”. Jesus promises the transformation of our minds, therefore how do we allow God to transform our vision of discipleship? With insights from Ignatius we will explore how we trust and surrender to God’s Kingdom in our lives and in our world. (See website for more details and registration) November Programs November 9 Table Fellowship in the Gospels and Ignatian Spirituality 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Presented by Dr. Andy Kereky Cost: $35 Meals are a very important part of Jesus’ life reflected in the Gospels. What do they tell us about Jesus, hospitality and our invitation to love others? And, how does this relate to Ignatian Spirituality? We will investigate and pray into this important dimension of our Lord’s ministry. Be prepared to experience Gospel table fellowship and Ignatian Spirituality in new and creative ways. The day begins with coffee and pastry at 9:00 a.m. and concludes by 3:00 p.m. Mass and lunch are included. December 14 From Advent to Christmas: Building the Spirit of Mercy, Hope & Joy 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Presented by Fr. Norm Douglas Cost: $35 Advent is the season of hope and anticipation. So it is good to consider what we are hoping for and what sort of world we are anticipating. The birth of Christ is about a new order coming to the world. On December 8 in this Advent, Pope Francis will open a Holy Year of Mercy. How do we open ourselves in this season to experience God's mercy in our lives as a source of hope and joy that shapes our celebration of Christmas? How do we foster this spirit of mercy, hope and joy in the New Year in our lives and our relationships? Lunch is included. December 11-12 Building a Vision for Retirement: The Advent of the Next Chapter of Life Presented by Rick Krivanka and Guest Speakers Cost: $90 What will the retirement years be like? Can it be a time that is truly life-giving and hope-filled? This weekend will provide presentations by speakers on relevant topics, interactive conversation, and time for personal reflection for individuals looking ahead to, or already in, retirement. It will explore the different aspects of one’s life and build the foundation for a vital spirituality and a meaningful and purposeful way of living after 60… or whenever! The evening will begin with dinner at 6:00 pm and will conclude at 11:00 am the next morning. Includes Mass and time for reflection and discussion. Here is a brief synopsis of what we can offer on-site at your parish: The Pilgrim Way of Ignatius Loyola offers a “taste of Ignatian Spirituality,” the spirituality of Pope Francis, which nurtures openness to the call of God in our lives. Some questions addressed in the program include: What happens when you encounter Christ? Is it possible to find God in all things? (4-part series, 90 minute sessions) Praying with St. Ignatius Retreat-in-Daily-Life follows the pattern set out by The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. Now in its 10th with revisions along the way, this retreat has set hearts on fire with love for Jesus Christ! (8-part series, 2 hour sessions) The Called and Sent Spiritual Formation Program, grounded in the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, nurtures spiritual deepening in individuals and communities for service of Christ’s mission in the world. This program is comprised of six modules which can be taken individually or as a series. Ignatian Foundations introduces key aspects of Ignatian Spirituality (prayer, discernment, action for justice): 6 monthly 2-hour sessions and a day-long retreat. Encountering Jesus Christ focuses on “interior knowledge of Jesus Christ” which is experienced through Ignatian contemplation of the Gospels: 6 weekly 90 minute sessions and a day-long retreat. Discernment and Decision-Making applies practical knowledge and application of “discernment of spirits” and decision making according to the teaching of Ignatius Loyola: 6 weekly 2-hour sessions and a day-long retreat. The Christian at Work in the World is offered in two parts: A) Catholic Social Teaching: and B) WorkPlace Spirituality. Each part, which can be taken together or separately, consists of 3 bi-weekly 2-hour sessions and a half-day retreat. Embracing the Mystery addresses landmarks on the spiritual journey including suffering and death, redemption and grace: 3 monthly 3-hour sessions and an overnight retreat. Living Prayer Retreat-in-Daily Life centers on life in the Spirit including personal prayer, spiritual direction, liturgy and sacraments: 6 weekly 2-hour sessions.
